Reward offered for Cat Mutilation A 5-year old tabby cat named Lion was found stabbed or shot, then cut in half in Tampa Heights on Monday, May 27th. A $1000 reward is offered by Crime Stoppers, a $1500 reward is offered by the Humane Society of Tampa Bay and a $500 reward is offered by Florida Voices for Animals. Anyone with a tip is asked to call Crime Stoppers (1-800-873-TIPS). === Amendment #1034: will harm human health and animal welfare by creating a loophole in the Food Safety Modernization Act for some poultry producers. It would exempt certain poultry slaughterhouses from federal inspection. This was introduced by Senator

Angus King. Forty-eight percent of poultry sold in supermarkets contains at least trace amounts of E. coli, contained in fecal matter which contaminates the meat at the slaughterhouse. Please email or call your senators about this Amendment.

RAW Veganism

A raw vegan diet consists of unprocessed, raw plant foods that have not been heated above 40 °C (104 °F). Raw vegans such as Dr. Brian Clement, Dr. Gabriel

Cousens, Thierry Brouwers a.k.a. "Superlight", and Douglas Graham believe that foods cooked above this temperature have lost much of their nutritional value and are less healthful or even harmful to the body. Advocates argue that raw or living foods have natural enzymes, which are critical in building proteins and rebuilding the body, and that heating these foods kills the natural enzymes and can leave toxins behind. Here’s a simple raw juice from Doreen

Martin www.rawdoreen.com. She’s a Certified Raw Food Health Coach, Certified Nutritional Blood Analyst (Blood Microscopy), a Life Coach and a Raw Food Chef. • 1 cup of water • 1 handful of spinach • 1/2 cucumber • 2 apples • 1 cup of pineapple Mix in blender and enjoy.

Veg Fest Sponsors & Volunteers Needed

Our 4th Annual Tampa Bay Veg Fest (TBVF) will take place on October 19. Tampa Bay Veg Fest is by far the largest event that FVA has ever organized. This is a huge undertaking in terms of people, hours and money. So far, this event has been extremely well attended and a huge success. However, Veg Fest is very costly and leaves FVA thousands of dollars in the red due to the many costs associated with this event, even though it is put on entirely by volunteers with no paid staff. We are hoping that in the very near future this event will become self-sustaining, since we will not be able to keep doing this, at such a loss each year, for very long. To that end, we desperately need sponsors to help support this fantastic educational event for the thousands that come each year. If you know of any corporate sponsors that you think may be interested in supporting us, please let us know. We need help seeking corporate sponsors, but anyone can also become a personal sponsor. Details on corporate sponsorships can be obtained by checking our TBVF website (www.TampaBayVegFest.org) or contacting us for more details. For a personal sponsorship, we are asking for a minimum donation of $500. Our sponsors will be recognized on our webpage, in TBVF materials and our newsletter.

Two people stepped up at our annual Have A Heart Fundraising dinner and became TBVF sponsors. We want to give a great big thanks to Cathy Unruh, longtime FVA supporter and author of “Taming Me: Memoir of a Clever Island Cat" and Jag Mehda for their generous donations. Bill & Myriam Parham have also become personal sponsors. Will you join them to help us make our 4th annual TBVF a success by becoming a personal sponsor? Simply send a check to FVA for $500 (earmarked for TBVF sponsorship) to our PO Box 17523, Tampa, FL 33682. Donations are also gratefully accepted at our Veg Fest website (www.TampaBayVegFest.org) through PayPal. Your support will truly help make a difference!

Additionally, it is only through the work of many volunteers that this event is possible. Many volunteers help on the day of Veg Fest in many ways: setting up, staffing a booth, helping clean up, and doing a variety of other tasks, which is absolutely necessary; however, behind the scenes, a lot of work is vital. Planning for the next year begins immediately at the end of any of our Veg Fests. This includes: getting vendors and sponsors, helping with PR, printing, phone calls, and so much more. It is only a handful of volunteers that do all the planning and organizing to make the day the enormous success that it is but we also need a lot of help. So… we are hoping that you will be not only interested in helping the day of TBVF but also in some of the planning and organizing. If you are able to attend a volunteer meeting at the Jimmie B. Keel library on June 30th, please sign up on the FVA Meet Up (http://www.meetup.com/Florida-Voices-for-Animals/) or send us a note. Vegan snacks will be served. You are also welcome to bring a vegan snack to share. Thank you in advance for all you do and caring about animals, the environment and making our world a better place for all.

New FVA Board Members!

One of our new FVA board members is Tom Bird. Tom has been a member of our organization since 1992 and has long participated in FVA’s outreach events. He also enjoys speaking to various groups around the Bay area on the health advantages, as well as ethical considerations, of animal advocacy. Additionally, during the past year he has delivered several vegan cooking demonstrations in public venues. Tom, now retired, was formerly a university professor in Georgia and more recently a librarian for twenty years with the Hillsborough County Library System. He and his wife are the proud parents of two adopted cats.

New FVA board member Kimberly Gronemeyer is an animal-loving, people-helping native of Florida. Raised in St. Petersburg and Largo, she completed her B.A. in psychology and her Psy.D. in clinical psychology before moving out of Florida. After nine years of working as a forensic psychologist for the North Carolina Department of Corrections, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and in private practice, "Dr. Kim" moved back to Florida in 2008 where she now evaluates and treats veterans on an inpatient psychiatric unit at the James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital in Tampa. After educating herself about animal cruelty, she gradually started going vegetarian in 1999. Then four and a half years ago, she read The China Study, by T. Colin Campbell, PhD and Thomas M. Campbell II, MD, and also was exposed to the truth about the cruelty inherent in the dairy and egg industries by FVA, especially former FVA employee Nikki Benoit. That was the push she needed to become a vegan. Kim has been active in FVA for almost five years, finding her activist niche in leafleting, tabling, writing letters, and demonstrating. Each October finds her working in the FVA tent at the Tampa Bay Veg Fest, and she braves the elements to demo at FVA's annual Ringling Circus protests in January. "My goal for FVA is to do more activism exposing omnivores to good vegan cooking, since diet change saves the most lives!" she says. An avid yoga practitioner, Kim also spends much of her free time outdoors, soaking up the sun, sailing, going to the beach ("anything with water and warm weather"), walking, or jogging. She enjoys cooking, concerts, travel, and, of course, activism. At home, she's the caretaker of "1.5 cats": the "amazing and entertaining" escape artist Slinky, and Juju, a special needs foster Maine Coon kitten. Lisa Robinton

Joan Zacharias was the recipient of FVA’s Activist of the Year Award in February at our Have-A-

Heart Fundraising Dinner. She exemplifies the epitome of activism as a tireless supporter of animal, human and environmental causes. Those who know her agree she is an extremely dedicated activist and a very kind and gentle person. Even when she disagrees with a point of view she is professional, diplomatic and fair in listening and presenting her views. No one can walk away from a conversation with Joan without feeling anything but respect and that you matter as a person. She has helped at every Tampa Bay Veg Fest, from beginning to end; has attended many meetings and demonstrations for animals; and has cooked many vegan sweet and savory dishes for countless educational tablings and social events. The annual ThanksVegan Dinner has been a huge success thanks to her hard work and dedication. Her most recent involvement in the Hillsborough County struggle to help feral cats and support proper TNR (Trap, Neuter and Release) is another example of her efforts to win better treatment for animals. Her activism on behalf of animals once landed her on the front page of the New York Times! No matter where she goes or what she does, we know she will always make a positive difference. Joan lives in Tampa with her husband, Tom Lyons and their delightful animal companions. Myriam Parham ===

This year, for the first time, FVA joined forces with The Girls Gone Green of Jacksonville to present No Meat March in the Tampa Bay area. In addition to Tampa and Jacksonville, Orlando and Daytona Beach also participated in this event. No Meat March [http://www.nomeatmarch.com/] is an annual event that provides an opportunity to pledge to go meat-free during the entire month of March while receiving support and information from the website and local events. Individuals who signed up online received informative daily e-mails which included four (4) plant-based recipes every single day (daily recipes for breakfast, lunch and dinner along with a gluten-free option.) In addition to the daily e-mails and recipes, each city provided events where people could meet, have fun and learn more about plant-based options. Events hosted by FVA included tours of community gardens and a farm animal sanctuary along with get-togethers at area restaurants. Several events suggested films to watch, books to read and websites to check out that were DIY (do-it-yourself) events. All of these opportunities for DIY events (it's not too late!) are posted on FVA's meet up site for the month of March at www.meetup.com/Florida-Voices-for-Animals/#calendar. Even if you missed No Meat March, you can still check out all of the delicious recipes and other resources (books, films, etc.) recommended by The Girls Gone Green -- just go to www.NoMeatMarch.com. DEEP ECOLOGY “Deep Ecology” is a relatively new-- and possibly unfamiliar to many-- term appearing in discussions and publications on Animal Advocacy. The relevance of the idea to the many endeavors of FVA will become obvious as you consider the following Wikipedia definition: “’Deep ecology’ is a contemporary ecological and environmental philosophy characterized by its advocacy of the inherent worth of living beings regardless of their instrumental utility to human needs, and advocacy for a radical restructuring of modern human societies in accordance with such ideas. Deep ecology argues that the natural world is a subtle balance of complex inter-relationships in which the existence of organisms is dependent on the existence of others within ecosystems. Human interference with or destruction of the natural world poses a threat therefore not only to humans but to all organisms constituting the natural order. Deep ecology's core principle is the belief that the living environment as a whole should be respected and regarded as having certain legal rights to live and flourish. It describes itself as "deep" because it regards itself as looking more deeply into the actual reality of humanity's relationship with the natural world arriving at philosophically more profound conclusions than that of the prevailing view of ecology as a branch of biology.” I hope you find much to ponder in this brief synopsis of a very profound revelation. Tom Bird

Wintery Spring Rolls Here's how this works. Each roll has a slather of ginger onion paste, a couple crunchy lettuce leaves, some mushrooms, tofu, and a bit of cilantro (or other herb of your choice - mint, basil). Roll tight, and you're set.

Ginger Onion Paste:

2 spring onions, finely sliced 2 red spring onions, finely sliced (or equivalent red onion / shallots) 3 tablespoons grated, peeled ginger 1/2 teaspoon fine grain sea salt 6 tablespoons sunflower oil

Brown Sugar Tofu & Mushrooms:

12 ounces extra firm tofu 3 medium cloves garlic 1/2 teaspoon fine grain sea salt 4 teaspoons natural cane sugar (or brown sugar) 2 tablespoons sunflower oil 8 ounces mushrooms, brushed clean, sliced 1/4-inch thick For spring roll assembly:

Ginger Onion Paste (above) Brown Sugar Tofu & Mushrooms (above) crisp, crunchy lettuce (baby greens / romaine) 1 small bunch fresh cilantro or other herbs, well washed / dried ~1 dozen rice paper wrappers Make the ginger onion paste: Place the onions and ginger in a mortar and pestle. Sprinkle with the salt, and pound until the onions are quite bruised, but not paste-like. Heat the oil in a small saucepan until hot (hot enough that you could saute something in it). Add the onion mixture to the oil, remove from heat, and transfer to a jar to cool. Drain off (and save) most of the oil before using it here in the rolls, leaving just the paste. Make the tofu & mushrooms: Pat the tofu dry, and cut into six equal slabs before arranging in a single layer on a rimmed plate. Place the garlic in a mortar and pestle, sprinkle with the salt and sugar, and pound into a paste. Work the oil in, a bit at a time, until the ingredients are completely combined. Use your hands to slather and gently coat each piece of tofu, be quite thorough. Set aside, and leave the bowl as is. Cook the tofu in a single layer in a large skillet over medium-high heat until deeply golden on each side. You don't need any additional oil here. Remove from the pan, and when cool enough to handle, slice into pencil-thick pieces, and salt to taste. In the meantime, toss the mushrooms gently (but well), in the residual marinade left in the tofu bowl. Once the tofu is done, you can use the same tofu skillet to cook the mushrooms. Use high heat, and cook until the mushrooms release their water and take on a nice, dark color. Transfer to a bowl or platter, and season appropriately. Assemble the spring rolls: In bowl of hot water, dip each rice paper wrapper for just 3 seconds. Resist over-soaking, even if the paper is a bit stiff; it will continue to absorb water as you assemble the wrap. Place on a flat work surface and fold in half. Have a glance at the photo at left if you've never done this. Keep all your ingredients crowded into 1/3 of the available surface of the wrapper at this point. Put down a generous smear of ginger onion paste. Then a lettuce leaf, tofu, a few mushroom slices, cilantro. Then, tuck and roll. You can certainly make enclosed rolls by leaving the wrapper round, and folding in the edges mid-wrap. Makes about a dozen rolls. Prep time: 15 min - Cook time: 15 min

GOOD NEWS ☺ Subway adds three vegan sandwiches Subway, the world’s largest restaurant chain, has added three new vegan sandwiches to its menu. Through their We Love Subway campaign, animal advocacy group Compassion over Killing has been lobbying Subway to offer more substantial protein-packed vegan meals. Right now, the sandwiches—Sweet

Riblet, Malibu Greek, and Italian Black Bean—are offered at only a handful of Subway restaurants in Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. If sales of these vegan entrees perform well, you’ll see them expand to other states. If you’d like to see these sandwiches offered at your local Subway, call their headquarters at 203-877-4281 or contact them by email, http://www.subway.com/ContactUs/frmCustomerService.aspx

☺ Colombia passes wild animal circus ban After a 6-year campaign by Animal Defenders International (ADI), the Colombian Congress has passed legislation to prohibit the use of wild animals in circuses – in both static and traveling circuses. Colombia is the fifth country in South America to legislate against animals in circuses following the launch of ADI’s Stop Circus Suffering campaign. Bill 244, 2012 prohibits the use of wild animals, whether native or exotic, in fixed and traveling circuses in Colombia. The bill originally sought to prohibit all animals in traveling circuses and this successfully passed in Colombia’s House of Representatives but sadly, domestic species were excluded in the final Senate discussions – despite extensive evidence of deprivation and brutality towards these animals. The circus industry has two years to comply with the new law.
