Flow assurance is an area of growing attention, aimed at smooth and e° cient f ow of hydrocarbons from reservoir to the point of sale. With a given set of boundary conditions and constraints, network simulations of transient multiphase f ow help def ning the operational envelope and maximising throughput, with optimised routing and gas lift, and with minimal wear and tear. Flow assurance also involves the important tasks of avoiding and handling solid deposits, like sand, hydrates, wax, asphaltenes and scale. The cost of deposits in terms of production loss and repair can be enormous.
