Operational Hazards Caused by Dust Airborne dust particles are hazardous as they cause poor visibility which is cited as a cause of accidents, injury to people and damage to equipment. Accidents result in downtime, investigations, loss of revenue and bad public relations. Furthermore, dust pollution can impair even the most sophisticated equipment, leading to downtime and expensive repairs.

Health Hazards and Public Relations Issues Caused by Dust Incorrectly managed dust pollution often causes problems in community and staff relations as the excesses inhalation of dust particles can cause individuals to develop respiratory related medical problems. The Department of Trade and Industry in South Africa has set stringent standards with the aim to control dust emissions in the working environment. Organisations that do not comply with these standards will be held liable for disabilities caused to workers. Possible Health Issues Arising from Dust Inhalation.

Dust Control and Suppression is a crucial factor in meeting safely, health and environmental (SHE) requirements, while protecting employees, improving social relations and extending the life of assets.

The FlowCentric Mining Technology team makes use of environmentally safe RDC20 and GreenGrip concentrate to manage road dust conditions.

RDC 20 Road Dust Control Concentrate RDC 20 is a water-soluble dust suppression concentrate, specifically designed to bind fine soil particles into larger heavier particles, which are less likely to become airborne. RDC 20 is an environmentally safe, all-purpose liquid soil additive. It is mixed with water and is used for controlling and managing a variety of soil conditions. When properly applied, the additive will effectively control problems associated with base failure, dust pollution and soil erosion.

RDC 20 will yield a dramatic increase in the strength of any type of soil base. RDC 20 does not require special equipment or handling precautions and is easily incorporated into routine dust suppression procedures. The product is simply diluted with water and sprayed onto the soil surface in predetermined quantities to bind and transform the base into a solid mass of tightly cemented soil particles.

RDC 20 Has Numerous Benefits: More cost effective than most other chemical dust suppressants. Not phototoxic or harmful to humans, fauna and flora. Truly environmentally friendly, fully biodegradable. Permits compliance with fugitive dust regulations. Improves grip on roads because of the friction between two organic materials. Significantly reduces braking distances and risk of skid as a result of the improved surface

grip.

Dosing System A PLC controlled dosing system is installed at the water supply point to enable easy, accurate dosing of the dust suppression concentrate. A pipe, supplying product to the bowser is installed on the existing gooseneck or pipe, which is used to fill the tankers/water bowsers. Additional buttons, dispensing different volumes of product according to bowser volumes, are supplied. This feature accommodates the different water bowser sizes.

The Equipment Consists of:

Product Tanks & Gooseneck

Panel of Dosing Unit Dosing Pump Tanker Refilling at station

GreenGrip GreenGrip is a natural, durable gravel road sealant for use on semi-permanent gravel roads. GreenGrip is specifically developed to produce durable, smooth and dust free surfaces with less frequent maintenance intervals. GreenGrip is water- soluble and is also easily incorporated into routine dust suppression procedures.

The Dust Ring System The Dust Ring System is a cost effective way to control dust on crushing plants, screening plants and in mines. The mechanism creates a curtain of mist around discharge points and stock piling conveyors capturing fugitive dust before it can be released into the atmosphere. Each unit comes with misting nozzles which can be adjusted to suit individual applications. The misting device can be assembled into 5 different shapes, and nozzles can be added or removed according to requirements. From the quarter ring to the ‘S’ shape the Dust Dominator can fit into hard to reach places, making it a very valuable device for combatting dust.

Depending on Nozzle-Configuration the Product Requires

Maximum of 6 bar water pressure. Maximum of 40 per minute.

Product Features Agile and customisable. Easy to assemble and maintain. Light and mobile. Cost-effective and water efficient.

The Dust Ring Systemr in Action Examples of Various Assembly Shapes

The Dual Purpose Fog Cannon Incorporating fine nozzles, a high pressure pump and a large fan motor, the Dust Rhino is perfect for suppressing dust and expediting wastewater evaporation.

The high pressure pump pushes water through the nozzles to create a fine mist which is then blown into the air by a 22Kw motorised fan. Designed for efficient and effective operation, the machine is portable and easily maneuvered into required locations. Using the Dust Rhino, you can effortlessly control dust emissions over large areas, especially on crushing plants.

The Rhino can also be set up for wastewater control. A larger pump and high volume nozzles are fitted to create an effective method for waste water evaporation.

Wastewater Treatment We provide cost-effective wastewater treatment options for:

Neutralisation of acid mine water(AMD). Neutralisation of acidic industrial effluents. Metal removal and recovery of valuables from wastewater streams. Desalination of effluents and brines.

Waste water Neutralisation Mining and some other industrial waste streams contain high concentrations of metals and sulphate. Elevated sulphate concentrations are normally associated with water from coal mining due to bacterial and chemical oxidation of pyrite (FeS), resulting in Acid Mine Drainage (AMD). AMD is formed when the mineral pyrite comes into contact with oxygen and water, producing elevated sulphate, metal and acidity concentrations.

As a result of the high concentrations of dissolved heavy metals and sulphate, these waters may not be discharged into public streams. This presents storage and management cost issues for industries.

Wastewater Desalination Desalination is an established technique of removing salts from water in order to produce ultrapure, drinking and process water (used for cooling towers, boilers, chillers etc.). In addition to fresh water recovery, desalination offers additional benefits by cutting down disposal costs and the potential to recover valuable by-products from the waste stream.

Damage Caused by AMD

Benefits of our Patented Desalination Method Lowered energy costs. Reduced maintenance costs. Effectively meet legal disposal requirements. Cut down on municipal fresh water demand. Zero liquid discharge. Elimination of brine/evaporation ponds. Produces potable water.

Reduce Space Required by Brine/Evaporation Ponds

Metal Removal from Wastewater Mine water, in particular, may contain valuable metals such as cobalt, copper, nickel and uranium which companies can reuse or sell once they are removed. The recovery of other saleable products, for example Sulphur and calcium carbonate, from typical industrial waste is also possible.

Ultra-Ever Dry is a superhydrophobic (water) and oleophobic (hydrocarbons) coating that will repel most liquids. Ultra-Ever Dry uses proprietary nanotechnology to coat an object and create a barrier of air on its surface. This barrier repels water, refined oil, wet concrete, and other liquids unlike any other coating. Ultra-Ever Dry has vastly improved adhesion and abrasion resistance, compared to previous technologies, allowing it to be used in applications where greater durability is required.

PRODUCT LIFE-EXTENDING

Many products fail from moisture, water, oil or simply getting too dirty for continued use. Electric motors will last longer by prevent-ing moisture on the windings. Nuts, bolts, tools, and equipment last longer because they are kept dry, corrosion free, de-iced and clean.

The superhydrophobic coating keeps objects dry. Water and many other liquids simply repel off the barrier of air that is created.

Maximum corrosion protection since water and moisture never actually contact the base material - 4 to 6 times better than the leading coated steel surface.

Keeps coated materials dry, eliminat-ing the dangerous formation of ice on homes, roofs, walkways, electrical lines and insulators, towers and other areas.

Dust, dirt, water and other liquids that contain bacteria or radiation never actually contact the surface of the coated material so bac-teria and radiation is greatly diminished or eliminated and easy to decontaminate to sterile, if needed.

Ultra-Ever Dry repels dirty water and some oils, and remains clean and virtually bacteria-free. When dust, dirt or other mole-cules accumulate on a coated surface, a light spray of water or a blast of air grabs the dust and removes it.

HOW IS IT APPLIED?Ultra-Ever Dry is sprayed on using a variety of air pow-ered sprayers. UltraTech offers the Ultra-Mini Sprayer and Ultra-Power Sprayer, but additional sprayers can be used for specific applications. NOTE: Both parts (top and bottom coat) are required for all applications of Ultra-Ever Dry.

1. How does Ultra-Ever Dry work?

The bottom coat bonds to most materials and acts as aprimer. It also offers corrosion protection and provides aconsistent material for the top coat to bond to while inter-acting with the top coat to self-assemble the surface intoa nano-textured surface. This surface creates patterns ofgeometric shapes and billions of interstitial spaces. There arehigh points in the texture that only allow the water dropletsto touch approximately 2-3% of the coating itself. The restof the water droplet suspends itself between these peaks dueto the surface chemistry of the coating. The coating also haslow surface energy. It is the combination of these elementsthat allow Ultra-Ever Dry to be superhydrophobic and oleo-phobic.

2. What do the terms “superhydrophobic” and “oleophobic”mean?Ultra-Ever Dry creates a solid/liquid contact angle of 160-175degrees. Well-known windshield water repellents are closerto 110 degrees and are only hydrophobic. A superhydropho-bic contact angle allow for the self-cleaning properties asso-ciated with Ultra-Ever Dry. Oleophobic refers to the ability to repel some oils and other hydrocarbons.

3. How long will an Ultra-Ever Dry coating last?

The Ultra-Ever Dry SE formula is susceptible to environmen-tal conditions such as UV. This coating will offer approxi-mately one year of outdoor life before reapplication of thetop coat would be required. When used in indoor or coveredapplications outdoors, the SE coating should last for a yearor more. If the top coat has diminished due to environ-mental conditions, simply reapply the top coat to regain thesuperhydrophobic properties (assuming the bottom coat isstill present). Abrasion can also contribute to more frequentreapplication.

4. What is the working temperature range for Ultra-Ever Dry SE?

The working temperature range for a coated surface is from-30°F to 300°F (-34°C to 149°C) once it has been applied. The coating should be applied at temperatures between 50°Fto 90°F (10°C to 32°C).

5. What materials will the Ultra-Every Dry adhere or bond to?

Almost any material is a candidate for application: steel, alu-minum, other metals, plastic, leather, fabric, wood, concrete, etc. The coating can be applied to and will bond to smoothsurfaces, but sanding the surface will improve adhesion.

6. How abrasion-resistant is Ultra-Ever Dry SE?

One of the breakthroughs for this product is its abrasionresistance. The proprietary material provides more abrasionresistance than previous superhydrophobic materials. Ifabrasion is a concern, testing is recommended. If the coatingis removed due to repeated or severe abrasion, it can bereapplied.

7. Will the coating still work if the top coat is largely removeddue to abrasion?

Yes. In many situations, the superhydrophobic nature of thematerial may be diminished but the remaining top coat andbottom coat still provide the functionality of keeping thecoated material from getting wet, iced up or corroding. Thisis application dependent.

8. What color is the SE coating?

The standard product is a trans-lucent white. We do not havea transparent formula at thistime. It is recommended to trythe coating in an inconspicuousarea first if color is important.

9. How many square feet orsquare meters can one gallon of Ultra-Ever Dry cover?

250 square feet or 23 square meters.

10. How long does Ultra-Ever Dry take to cure?

Generally about 30 - 60 minutes for the bottom coat and 15-30 minutes for the top coat, which can be re-duced by applying heat using an oven, industrial heat gun, or blow dryer.

11. What is the shelf life of Ultra-Ever Dry and what tempera-ture should it be stored at?

Typically, shelf life of the product will be one year whenstored between 40°F and 115°F (4°C and 40°C).

12. Does Ultraviolet (UV) light affect Ultra-Ever Dry?

The SE formula is affected by UV and can reduce its usefullife. Additional Ultra-Ever Dry formulas are being developedto reduce the effect of UV light.

13. How chemically resistant is Ultra-Ever Dry?

As with most materials and coatings, this will depend on thechemical. In general, it is resistant to a wide range includingmost acids, caustics and some oils. Testing may be requiredto ensure proper compatibility.

14. What known chemicals are incompatible Ultra-Ever Dry?

Alcohols and soaps/detergents will cause the surface of thecoating to “wet-out”. Once these chemicals are removed, the superhydrophobicity will generally return. Solvents willwet-out on the surface and will diminish the coating’s usefullife. Other chemicals and liquids with low surface tensionswill also wet-out the surface.

15. Will Ultra-Ever Dry help prevent corrosion?

Yes, Ultra-Ever Dry is cor-rosion resistant. Increasingthe bottom coat thicknesswill increase longevity. Ap-plying Ultra-Ever Dry on topof existing painted surfaces, polyurethane coatings orother treated surfaces willgenerally increase the cor-rosion resistance.

VETIVER PLANT REHABILITATION

Tailing Dam Stabilization with pastures (See below)

General Information Chrysopogon zizanioides, commonly known as Vetiver is a

perennial grass of the Poaceae family. Vetiver can grow up to 1.5

meters high and form clumps as wide. The stems are tall and the

leaves are long, thin, and rather rigid; the flowers are brownish-

purple. Unlike most grasses, which form horizontally spreading,

mat-like root systems, Vetiver’s roots grow downward, 2–4 m in

depth. The most commonly used commercial genotypes of

Vetiver are sterile (do not produce fertile seeds), and because

vetiver propagates itself by small offsets instead of underground

stolons, these genotypes are non-invasive and can easily be

controlled by cultivation of the soil at the boundary of the hedge.

Vetiver grass is used extensively for erosion and sediment control

in a wide variety of applications. The Vetiver system, a

technology of soil conservation and water quality management,

is based on the use of the Vetiver plant. The plant is extremely

tough and flourish in dry and hot conditions. It is also highly PH

tolerant and grows well in conditions with PH varying from 3 to

10. The plants can be harvested and bio-oils can be extracted or

alternatively used as animal feed. If vegetation is stablished by

planting rootstock 600mm apart the whole area would be

densely covered within 6 months.

Establishment Grass would be established with a Humegrow

– DKP at 200 liters per hectare and followed

up with Humegrow 1358 at 200 liters per

hectare 4 weeks after establishment.
