Liner NotesI am thrilled to be hosting and accompanying another sing-along at the beautiful San Francisco Botanical Garden as a part of Flower Piano. Welcome to our celebration of 1967 and “The Summer of Love.”In ‘67 I was a high school sophomore. Since I have two older brothers and my mother always had Top 40 radio on in the car, I KNOW these songs. My personal tastes skew towards R&B and soul music—after all, I am from Philadelphia—and Philly was and is a hub for African American music. So I lip synced—and danced—more to The Temptations than the Beatles or the Beach Boys.1967 was a big year in pop music. Some have called it a turn-ing point. Singles, on 45 rpm records (with the big hole in the middle), dominated the airwaves. But by the end of the year, albums had taken over the market and the radio. And the fol-lowing year, 1968, had so much turmoil and violence, that 1967 was a sort of unrecognized respite from what was to come. The hardest part of organizing today’s event was choosing which songs to sing. There are simply too many great tunes from 1967 to cover in a mere two hours. (Do the math.) I start-ed with Weekly Top 40 lists. 19 different songs held the top spot in the 52 weeks of 1967, 12 for more than one week. We’re singing them all today except for two, strangely both by The Supremes. [TMI Footnote: I thought “The Happening” and “Love is Here (and Now You’re Gone)” were too odd to sing as a group, especially the latter with its “talking” sections. But Di-ana and the girls were SO big back then that I’ve included a hit from 1966 (“You Keep Me Hanging On”). For you nitpickers, it was still on the radio in ‘67 and was included in the 1967 LP “Supremes Sing Holland-Dozier-Holland.” And then there’s the ’67 Vanilla Fudge recording. But I digress.]I then pored over the details of those weekly Top 40 lists and chose records that consistently charted. So many great tunes never made it to #1 but stayed in the charts for months and months.

Some other notes:• I’ve tried to keep the selections varied in terms of style, origin, point of view, etc. There were a lot of Flower Power or Hippie or Summer of Love-y songs. Also a lot of absolute pap that may or may not ring true with the public today. Do you want to sing “The Beat Goes On” or “Something Stupid”? People are different and I won’t judge. But I will NOT sing “Green Green Grass of Home.” (I’m a little surprised one of those zombie shows hasn’t used it. I mean the guy is singing from the grave!)

• I tended to not include a song if it was a cover of a previous record. Some big songs got left out this way, e.g. “Baby, I Need Your Lovin’” which was a huge hit for Johnny Rivers in 1967. But The Four Tops had released it in 1964. Sorry, Johnny.

• I do not consider one’s choice of personal pronouns to be a political statement. But I could be wrong. So use “he” for “she” and vice versa as you see fit. It will not disturb the sing-ing.

• We do not have time to sing the entire “Sgt. Pepper” album. I am sorry. Maybe some other time. I’ve got three Beatles songs on our list. They will have to suffice.

• Certain artists are truly unique and sound like nobody else. And a guitar-heavy song sounds ridiculous on a piano. So no “Purple Haze.” Sorry, Jimi. Similarly I don’t want to hear any-one other than James Brown sing “Cold Sweat.”

• Generally we’re going to sing all the songs in their original keys. So if you sang along with the radio in ‘67, sing out today!

I know some of you will be disappointed that your favorite song is not included. In the back of this lyric booklet you’ll find a list of 80 songs that didn’t make the cut. And I’m sure there are many more I missed. More than enough for another sing- along or two.

SOMETHING STUPIDWords and Music by Carson Parks © 1966 I know I stand in line, until you think you have the timeTo spend an evening with meAnd if we go someplace to dance, I know that there’s a chanceYou won’t be leaving with meAnd afterwards we drop into a quiet little placeAnd have a drink or twoAnd then I go and spoil it all, by saying something stupidLike “I love you”

I can see it in your eyes, that you despise the same old liesYou heard the night beforeAnd though it’s just a line to you, for me it’s trueIt never seemed so right before

I practice every day to find some clever lines to sayTo make the meaning come throughBut then I think I’ll wait until the evening gets lateAnd I’m alone with youThe time is right, your perfume fills my head, the stars get redAnd oh the night’s so blueAnd then I go and spoil it all, by saying something stupidLike “I love you”

(Short instrumental) The time is right, your perfume fills my head, the stars get redAnd oh the night’s so blueAnd then I go and spoil it all, by saying something stupidLike “I love you”“I love you, I love you” (repeat and fade) GROOVIN’Words and Music by Felix Cavaliere and Eddie Brigati © 1967 1. WINDYWords and Music by Ruthann Friedman © 1967

Who’s peekin’ out from under a stairwayCalling a name that’s lighter than airWho’s bending down to give me a rainbowEveryone knows it’s Windy

Who’s tripping down the streets of the citySmilin’ at everybody she seesWho’s reachin’ out to capture a momentEveryone knows it’s Windy

And Windy has stormy eyesThat flash at the sound of liesAnd Windy has wings to flyAbove the clouds (above the clouds)Above the clouds (above the clouds)

(Short instrumental) Whistle the melody, if you can

And Windy has stormy eyesThat flash at the sound of lies

LIGHT MY FIREWords and Music by John Densmore, Jim Morrison, Robby Krieger & Ray Manzarek © 1966

You know that it would be untrueYou know that I would be a liarIf I was to say to youGirl, we couldn’t get much higherCome on baby, light my fireCome on baby, light my fireTry to set the night on fire

The time to hesitate is throughNo time to wallow in the mireTry now we can only loseAnd our love become a funeral pyreCome on baby, light my fireCome on baby, light my fireTry to set the night on fire, yeah

(World’s longest organ solo, followed an equally long guitar solo)

The time to hesitate is throughNo time to wallow in the mireTry now we can only loseAnd our love become a funeral pyreCome on baby, light my fireCome on baby, light my fireTry to set the night on fire, yeah

ODE TO BILLY JOEWords and Music by Bobbie Gentry © 1967

1. It was the third of June, another sleepy, dusty Delta dayI was out choppin’ cotton and my brother was bailin’ hayAnd at dinner time we stopped and we walked back to the house to eatAnd mama hollered at the back door “y’all remember to wipe your feet”And then she said she got some news this mornin’ from Choctaw RidgeToday Billie Joe MacAllister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge

2. Papa said to mama as he passed around the blackeyed peas“Well, Billie Joe never had a lick of sense. Pass the biscuits, please”“There’s five more acres in the lower forty I’ve got to plow”Mama said it was shame about Billie Joe, anyhowSeems like nothin’ ever comes to no good up on Choctaw RidgeAnd now Billie Joe MacAllister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge

3. And brother said he recollected when he and Tom and Billie JoePut a frog down my back at the Carroll County picture showAnd wasn’t I talkin’ to him after church last Sunday night?“I’ll have another piece of apple pie, you know it just don’t seem right”“I saw him at the sawmill yesterday on Choctaw Ridge”“And now you tell me Billie Joe’s jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge”

4. Mama said to me “Child, what’s happened to your appetite?”“I’ve been cookin’ all morning and you haven’t touched a single bite”“That nice young preacher, Brother Taylor, dropped by today”

Page 16: Flower piano Summer of Love songbook-2017 piano Summer...SAN FRANCISCO BOTANICAL GARDEN Celebrate the Summer of Love with Billy Philadelphia of COMMUNITY MUSIC CENTER! Flower Piano

13

“Said he’d be pleased to have dinner on Sunday, oh, by the way”“He said he saw a girl that looked a lot like you up on Choctaw Ridge”“And she and Billie Joe was throwing somethin’ off the Tallahatchie Bridge”

5. A year has come and gone since we heard the news ‘bout Billie JoeBrother married Becky Thompson, they bought a store in TupeloThere was a virus going ‘round, papa caught it and he died last SpringAnd now mama doesn’t seem to want to do much of anythingAnd me, I spend a lot of time pickin’ flowers up on Choctaw RidgeAnd drop them into the muddy water off the Tallahatchie Bridge.

TO SIR WITH LOVEWords and Music by Don Black © 1966

1. Those schoolgirl days of telling tales and biting nails are goneBut in my mind I know they will still live on and onBut how do you thank someone who has taken you from crayons to perfume? It isn’t easy, but I’ll try

If you wanted the sky I would write across the sky in lettersThat would soar a thousand feet high ‘To Sir, With Love’

2. The time has come for closing books and long last looks must endAnd as I leave I know that I am leaving my best friendA friend who taught me right from wrong and weak from strongThat’s a lot to learn, but what can I give you in return?

If you wanted the moon I would try to make a starBut I would rather you let me give my heart ‘To Sir, With Love’

INCENSE AND PEPPERMINTSWords and Music by John S. Carter and Tim Gilbert © 1967

Good sense, innocence, cripplin’ mankindDead kings, many things I can’t defineOccasions, persuasions clutter your mindIncense and peppermints, the color of time

Who cares what games we choose?Little to win, but nothin’ to lose

Incense and peppermints, meaningless nounsTurn on, tune in, turn your eyes around.

Look at yourself, look at yourself, yeah, yeahLook at yourself, look at yourself, yeah, yeah, yeah!

To divide this cockeyed world in twoThrow your pride to one side, it’s the least you can doBeatniks and politics, nothing is newA yardstick for lunatics, one point of view

Who cares what games we choose?Little to win, but nothin’ to lose

Good sense, innocence, cripplin’ mankindDead kings, many things I can’t defineOccasion, persuasions clutter your mindIncense and peppermints, the color of time

1. Oh, I could hide ‘neath the wingsOf the bluebird as she singsThe six-o’clock alarm would never ring

But six rings and I riseWipe the sleep out of my eyesThe shaving razor’s cold and it stings

BR: Cheer up, sleepy JeanOh, what can it mean to aDaydream believer and aHomecoming queen?

2. You once thought of meAs a white knight on his steedNow you know how happy I can be

Oh, our good time starts and endsWithout all I want to spendBut how much, baby, do we really need?

2. Maybe you’ll think that love would tie you downAnd you don’t have the time to hang aroundOr maybe you’ll think that love will make us foolsAnd so it makes you wise to break the rules

Oh little girl, in that case I don’t want no partI do believe that that would only break my heartOh, but if you feel like lovin’ meIf you got the notion, I second that emotionYeah, if you feel like giving me a lifetime of devotionI second that emotion

ALFIEWords by Hal David, Music by Burt Bacharach © 1966

What’s it all about, Alfie? Is it just for the moment we live? What’s it all about when you sort it out, Alfie? Are we meant to take more than we giveOr are we meant to be kind?

And if only fools are kind, AlfieThen I guess it is wise to be cruelAnd if life belongs only to the strong, AlfieWhat will you lend on an old golden rule?

As sure as I believe there’s a heaven above, AlfieI know there’s something much more,Something even non-believers can believe in

I believe in love, AlfieWithout true love we just exist, AlfieUntil you find the love you’ve missed you’re nothing, Alfie

DIFFERENT DRUMWords and Music by Michael Nesmith © 1965

You and I travel to the beat of a diff’rent drumOh, can’t you tell by the way I runEv’ry time you make eyes at me. Wo-oh

You cry and you moan and say it will work outBut honey child, I’ve got my doubtsYou can’t see the forest for the trees

Oh, don’t get me wrong. It’s not that I’m knockin’It’s just that I am not in the marketFor a boy/girl who wants to love only me

Yes, and I ain’t sayin’ you ain’t prettyI’m sayin’ I’m not ready for any person, place or thingTo try and pull the reins in on me

So goodbye, I’ll be leavin’I see no sense in this cryin’ and grievin’.We’ll both live a lot longer if you live without me.

WHITE RABBITWords and Music by Grace Slick © 1966

One pill makes you larger, and one pill makes you smallAnd the ones that mother gives you, don’t do anything at allGo ask Alice, when she’s ten feet tall

And if you go chasing rabbits, and you know you’re going to fallTell ‘em a hookah-smoking caterpillar has given you the callAnd call Alice, when she was just small

When the men on the chessboard get up and tell you where to goAnd you’ve just had some kind of mushroom, and your mind is moving lowGo ask Alice. I think she’ll know.

When logic and proportion have fallen sloppy deadAnd the White Knight is talking backwardsAnd the Red Queen’s “off with her head”Remember what the dormouse saidFeed your head. Feed your head.

I THINK WE’RE ALONE NOWWords and Music by Richard Rosenblatt (aka Ritchie Cordell) © 1967

1. Children behave, That’s what they say when we’re togetherAnd watch how you play, They don’t understand and so we’reRunning just as fast as we can,Holding onto one another’s handTrying to get away into the nightAnd then you put your arms around me and we tumble to the groundAnd then you say:

(BRIDGE) I think we’re alone nowThere doesn’t seem to be anyone aroundI think we’re alone nowThe beating of our hearts is the only sound

2. Look at the way, we gotta hide what we’re doin’‘Cause what would they say, If they ever knew and so we’reRunning just as fast as we can,Holding onto one another’s handTrying to get away into the nightAnd then you put your arms around me and we tumble to the groundAnd then you say:

BOTH SIDES NOWWords and Music by Joni Mitchell © 1967

1. Rows and flows of angel hair, And ice cream castles in the airAnd feather canyons everywhere, I’ve looked at clouds that wayBut now they only block the sun, They rain and snow on everyoneSo many things I would have done, But clouds got in my way

I’ve looked at clouds from both sides nowFrom up and down and still somehowIt’s cloud’s illusions I recallI really don’t know clouds at all

2. Moons and Junes and ferris wheels, The dizzy dancing way you feelWhen every fairy tale comes real, I’ve looked at love that wayBut now it’s just another show, You leave ‘em laughin’ when you goAnd if you care, don’t let them know, Don’t give yourself away

I’ve looked at love from both sides now From give and take and still somehowIt’s love’s illusions I recallI really don’t know love at all

3. Tears and fears and feeling proud, To say “I love you” right out loudDreams and schemes and circus crowds, I’ve looked at life that wayBut now old friends are acting strange They shake their heads, they say I’ve changedWell something’s lost, but something’s gained, in living every day. I’ve looked at life from both sides now From give and take and still somehow

THAT’S LIFEWords and Music by Dean Kay and Kelly Gordon © 1963

That’s life (that’s life) that’s what all the people sayYou’re riding high in April, shot down in MayBut I know I’m gonna change that tuneWhen I’m back on top, back on top in June

I said that’s life (that’s life) and as funny as it may seemSome people get their kicks stompin’ on a dreamBut I don’t let it, let it get me down‘Cause this fine old world, it keeps spinnin’ around

BR: I’ve been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate, a poet, a pawn and a kingI’ve been up and down and over and out and I know one thingEach time I find myself flat on my faceI pick myself up and get back in the race

That’s life (that’s life) I tell ya, I can’t deny itI thought of quitting, baby but my heart just ain’t gonna buy itAnd if I didn’t think it was worth one single tryI’d jump right on a big bird and then I’d fly

BR: I’ve been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate, a poet, a pawn and a kingI’ve been up and down and over and out and I know one thingEach time I find myself layin’ flat on my faceI just pick myself up and get back in the race

1. Looking out on the morning rainI used to feel so uninspiredAnd when I knew I had to face another dayLord, it made me feel so tired

‘Cause you make me feelYou make me feelYou make me feel like a natural woman

(Famous instrumental intro)

1. We skipped the light fandangoTurned cartwheels ‘cross the floorI was feeling kinda seasickBut the crowd called out for moreThe room was humming harderAs the ceiling flew awayWhen we called out for another drinkThe waiter brought a tray

And so it was that laterAs the miller told his taleThat her face, at first just ghostly,Turned a whiter shade of pale

(Short instrumental)

2. She said, ‘There is no reasonAnd the truth is plain to see.’But I wandered through my playing cardsWould not let her beOne of sixteen vestal virginsWho were leaving for the coastAnd although my eyes were openThey might just as well’ve been closed

And so it was that laterAs the miller told his taleThat her face, at first just ghostly,Turned a whiter shade of pale

About San Francisco Botanical GardenSan Francisco Botanical Garden offers 55 acres of beautiful gardens displaying over 8,500 different kinds of plants from around the world, some no longer found in their native habitats. With San Francisco’s famous fog and mild, mediterranean climate, the Garden enjoys a range of climatic conditions that exists in few other botanical gardens in the world, allowing it to grow and conserve a highly diverse and critically important botanical collection. The Garden serves as an outdoor classroom, connecting people to plants in the heart of the city. Its thriving youth education program serves more than 13,000 children annually, reaching almost every public elementary school in San Francisco. Free, daily docent-led tours are available year-round.

We hope you will return to the Garden again and again to experience one of the country’s most significant botanical collections right here in Golden Gate Park. For more info, visit SFBotanicalGarden.org.
