Connect Your Rural Village to the Global Village

Internet connectivity has made the world into a smaller place with bigger opportunities. Opportunities that let you share ideas, make new friends and find new business prospects. But in rural communities from Kansas to Kenya, 60% or even 90% of the people don’t have broadband access due to the high costs and low profits of running cables.Just as Internet connectivity lets you overcome barriers of place, wireless broadband lets you overcome barriers of wiring. Alvarion’s wireless broadband solutions enable service providers to build cost-effective 21st century broadband networks for rural communities that deliver anytime, anywhere access to voice, video and data.

Tasmania

Internet Access Tasmania is a group of Australian islands with a population of nearly 500,000. It is located about 240 kilometers (150 mi) south of the mainland. Due to its rural setting and challenging mountainous topography, many of the island’s businesses have inadequate wired telecom infrastructure and do not have access to broadband. When the local Thrifty Car Rental franchise was told by the incumbent carrier that there was nothing to be done to connect their scattered offices, the directors decided to look for a solution. Convinced of the value of wireless broadband, they set up a company and selected Alvarion wireless broadband technology for operating in unlicensed bands. Within a few short months, they were able to roll out a cost-effective wireless broadband network that provides services to more than 200 companies.

The Basque Country, Spain

Internet AccessThe Basque country is a rural area in the north of Spain with a population of more than 2 million people spread over 7,254 km2 (2,800 mi2). Lack of commercial interest in offering broadband service left half the country and 5% of the population with no access. As a result, the Basque government took the initiative to bridge the digital divide. Faced with the huge costs of building a wired infrastructure, they selected Alvarion wireless broadband technology. The government funded the network, land space and CPEs through the government-owned telecom and handed over day-to-day operations to a private provider. Wireless broadband was rolled out to the entire Basque region within two years. Rural schools, businesses, and local governments all have access. The improved infrastructure has encouraged economic development and a number of companies have opened offices in the Basque country.

Idaho, Indiana, Montana, South Dakota, Wyoming & Virginia, USA

Rural BroadbandDigitalBridge Communications (DBC) provides broadband wireless services to small and medium-sized communities of up to 150,000 people nationwide. Working with communities and schools in underserved areas, DBC makes high-speed services available to local residents and students. DBC’s first network went live in Rexburg, Idaho and offered fixed and nomadic services. Within a year, they were operating 15 high-speed networks in towns throughout Idaho, Indiana, Montana, Virginia and South Dakota. They have 15 networks that offer mobile Internet service over Alvarion’s BreezeMAX solution, enabling employees to stay online via their mobile office and access video, voice, and data communications on the go. DigitalBridge sells its services under the brand name BridgeMAXX®. Service plans available are from 2 Mbps to business-grade services and are sold online, over the phone, and at a number of local retail locations.

The Eastern Shore of Maryland, USA

Rural Broadband, EducationBloosurf was awarded Federal Stimulus funds to bring broadband to Worcester, Wicomico and Somerset counties, as well as Smith Island on Maryland’s eastern shore. Using Alvarion technology, Bloosurf is building a wireless broadband network to provide broadband services to 126,000 people, 6,000 businesses and 351 community institutions. Paul Carliner, president of Bloosurf, called the service an unprecedented offer that would be better than anything offered in Baltimore or Washington. In areas such as the regional university campuses that are more populated, Bloosurf will offer wireless broadband service through partnerships with the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Salisbury University and Wor-Wic Community College. Bloosurf has partnered with the universities to provide thousands of students on three campuses with consistent, high-speed connectivity to the university networks and to the Internet.
