    McLaughlin EA Meeting, January 29th

On January 29th, a Public Information Centre (PIC)

was held at the Peel District School Board Head

Office to inform residents about the Environmental

Assessment with respect to McLaughlin Road. Ijoined City staff and engineering consultants to talk

to residents, answer their questions and address their

concerns about the proposed changes to the road. A

final decision on the future of McLaughlin Road has

not yet been made, but residents have been presented with three proposals.

Following the PIC, City staff and the engineering consultants will review the feedback from

residents and prepare a final proposal for resident input. This will likely take place in the Spring.

want to be involved with the BIA, please visit

On December 12th, Mississauga City Council

passed a by-law establishing the Malton BusinessImprovement Area (BIA). Since January of this

year, I have been working with local Malton businesses to establish a Malton BIA. A BIA will

beautify the local business area and community, thereby improving business and driving

economic development in Malton. My hope is to replicate the success that Port Credit and

Streetsville have experienced as a result of their long-standing BIAs. Following three meetings

with over 75 businesses in Malton from January - June 2012 a steering committee was struck

that is comprised of Malton business owners. In September 2012, City Council approved the

creation of a Malton BIA and notices were sent to all businesses in the proposed Malton BIA.

    Only three objections were received.

live music, guest speakers, spoken word performances, an art exhibit

and a chance to discuss the important contributions of the blackcommunity by reflecting on the lives of some outstanding individuals

including Donovan Bailey and Lincoln Alexander, among many

    others.

Free money for your child's education! Yes, Really!

Parents and caregivers are invited to 3420 The

Collegeway, Mississauga, on Wednesday February 6th

to register their children in the Canada Learning Bond

(CLB), a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP). Upon

registration, eligible children will receive $500 from theGovernment of Canada, followed by $100 each year to a maximum of $2,000. The bond

accumulates interest over time and no parental contribution is required. Eligible children are

those born in 2004 or after and are from families earning less than $42,707 net income annually.

The event is an easy, one-stop-shop in which children can obtain a Social Insurance Number

(SIN) from Service Canada representatives, if they do not already have one, and can open an

RESP with the Royal Bank of Canada where $500 will be directly deposited into the child's

account. The event will take place from 1-7:30 p.m. and parents should bring two pieces of

government-issued ID, their child's Canadian birth certificate (or citizenship card if born outside

of Canada) and SIN (if they have one). Child minding and refreshments will be available. Formore information, visitpcyi.org.

I joined Peel Children and Youth Initiative (PCYI) in organizing a similar event in Malton in

October, where over 40 children were registered for the Canada Learning Bond. I encourage

you to take advantage of this program if you qualify, and to let other parents know about the

ability to receive free money for their child's education.

In the past, I have hosted town hall meetings that feature discussion

on a wide range of topics. I will continue to host these meetings, but I

will also be hosting smaller, neighbourhood-focused meetings or

'coffee parties.' I find that meeting with a small group of neighbours in

a relaxed setting is often the best way to have an informed and

engaging discussion on the issues that matter to residents.

If you would like to organize a coffee party, I will bring the muffins! Please feel free to contact

me at [email protected] or905-896-5500 and we can organize a meeting

    soon.
