President’s MessageHello, Fellow Mini Bull Friends!!

So many good things are happening in our club! Finally, our board has begun adopting Standing Rules and Procedure documents, retooled Bylaws, a simplified voting process, and a smoother, quicker way to get this publication in your mailbox.

Our National Specialty competition will be here in five short months. Plan to join us October 12-15 for an exciting, fun-filled weekend in Modesto, California. Nothing is better than showing your Mini or having a ringside seat along with visitors from all over the world to watch the best Miniature Bull Terri-ers compete!

We have made some changes this year to our Van Hildrikhu-sen Trophy show. While we still have a strong commitment to health testing, test results are no longer required to enter. For the first time, the Trophy Show will be judged by a panel of three judges as Lotte Frank intended when she created this competition. Watch for a Facebook page soon with ongoing information about hotels, and National Weekend events!

Our National Specialty Weekend competition is a must for any serious Mini breeder or fancier. Learn what is happening in the breed, attend a educational presentation, meet other breeders from around the world, connect in person with your FB friends — and meet Minis you have only seen in pictures!

This year we are work-ing with the Bull Terrier Club of America, Barbary Coast Bull Terrier Club, and the Miniature Bull Terrier Club of Southern California to organize the best show possible. We hope you will volunteer for one or more of the groups forming to help make the venue run smoothly. More information on these groups will be posted on

the upcoming Facebook page.

Meanwhile, club committees continue to work in various areas developing structures making the MBTCA stronger, better orga-nized, and more efficient. It is exciting to see our progress. This is a great club with an active and involved membership. Our enthu-siasm about our dogs and our commitment to them is admired by many in the dog world. Let’s keep up the good work — together we are unstoppable! See you in October!

Editor’s NoteAs I write this, folks in my town are breathing our annual collective sigh of relief: Ohio University is out for the summer. Suddenly, our little town is literally half its size — the on-campus enrollment of 25,000 is about equal to the city’s resident population.

Still, having several thousand 18- to 25-year-olds around has a way of keeping one young at heart. College towns have a vibrancy and a sense of purpose that other locales of similar size can’t match.

Which brings me to this issue’s feature on Erica Massingill and her fellow Junior Handlers. The AKC and the Canine Chronicle both report declining or flat participation in conformation in recent years, and one reason is that the demographics of the purebred dog world skew to the (ahem) mature side.

It is vital that our club celebrate and support Junior Show-manship, as well as . If the MBTCA is going to see another 50 years — indeed, if Miniature Bull Terriers are to continue as a

healthy, viable breed — we must do more to reach out to youth and young adults:

• Involve your kids or grandkids in AKC Junior events. Pee Wee Class events are geared for kids ages 5 to 9; Juniors for those ages 9 to 18. Learn all you need to know — includ-ing information on offering Junior and Pee Wee events in your own shows — at akc.org/events/junior-showmanship/.

• Get in touch with local 4-H groups, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, churches, and other youth organizations. Offer to speak about dog care, grooming, training and (if you’re qualified) breeding. If any of the kids show interest, mentor them as they learn handling skills. (Remember that Junior memberships in MBTCA are free!)

• When you sell puppies to young couples or families, spon-sor their membership in MBTCA. Invite them to shows in your region. We hear all the time that “the Mini people are so much fun!” Let your dog families in on the secret.

Young people bring fresh perspectives, new ideas, and innova-tive thinking that can only strengthen our club. Let’s do all we can to add them to our ranks and make them welcome.

Corinne

Get to know … Melissa DreyerKennel: SunriseMBTCA member since: 2004Day job: Veterinary Technician for canine reproduction and freezing center

When did you first learn about Mini Bulls? In 1994, I was showing my Danes and one decided to befriend one of my big males at a show and I was hooked. My husband at the time however was not! It’s 2017 now, still have the dogs ... we’ll leave it at that!

Who was your first Mini Bull? Dory, CH Envision Registan Bewitched. I finished her owner- handled and she took Breed and a Group 4 her first time in as a special at Hatboro KC/Montgomery weekend. I was hooked.

What do you remember most about your first litter? Three brindle and white boys, all beautiful, Owen and Sumo and Jinx. It was a great healthy litter, all still going and produc-ing at 11 years of age now.

What do you remember most about your first show? My first show with Dory I showed to David Alexander — thank god, because Dory was always on crack! LOL! I met Georgiann Aikens and she was so kind to us. Dory took breed over her Special that day. She helped us, letting us know where entries would be etc.

Not my first dog show though; I have been showing dogs since 1981. Started as a kid in 4-H in Juniors with my golden. Robin (Massengill) started first and got me hooked. Every year, we would cut school, catch a bus into NYC as kids and come watch the Westminster show. I still can’t believe my parents let us!

Golden Retrievers are my first breed, I have owned and bred several champions and group-winning hall of fame specials. Great Danes are my other breed — I’ve also owned and bred and shown many Top 20 BISS Group-winning danes.

What do you value most in a fellow breeder? Honesty and integrity. We all know you can finish any dog, and rank any dog if you choose to depending on your means. But knowing which dogs you own and have bred are truly good rep-resentations of the standard, regardless of their achievements, you owe that to the breed, to breed the best you can to the best you can find, in conformation, health and temperament.

What do you value most in a dog owner? The owner who is willing to treat the purchasing of a dog like the adoption of a child. They need to be willing to take on any-thing and everything and know that it’s their responsibility to care for this dog as if it were their child for its entire life.

What do you appreciate most in your friends? I like honesty. I am all for telling it like it is. I am happy to debate a point and am always willing to back my reasons or views and always willing to listen and learn from theirs as well. It’s the unconditional love and support I have for them and they

have for me. Mutual respect and trust. I don’t give it lightly and never take it for granted when extended to me.

What do you do when you’re at the end of your rope? I swing. You have to know there’s always an answer, always a way out. You have to own and learn from your trials and mistakes, and take the bad with the good. Life’s a circle — you know the saying, the only way from the top is down. So you have to know it’s all just a constant cycle. Be humble, be kind, be gracious, you’ll get your turn.

Whom do you call first when you have good news? Usually my mom, she and my dad always supported my crazy dog show world. Then co-breeders, and folks associated with the dog involved. Facebook makes life transparent before you can!

What do you like best about Mini Bulls? Their zest for life, sense of humor, and do they ever have a bad day?!

What makes you happiest? Spending time with family, friends and my dogs. If I can do it at the beach with a cocktail that’s even better! In spite of my infamous standoffish nature, I’m focused. LOL! I’m super social and love to have fun!

What makes you miserable? A sick dog. missing an entry under a great judge or a favorite show, cold weather!

What is your defining characteristic? Probably my laugh. I am terrible, I laugh at everything.

Then as a person, and a breeder, I do my own thing. I make my own choices, and don’t really care if they’re popular, or support-ed. I’m not afraid to make my bed or lie in it. I’m not judgmen-tal I just go my own way. I don’t like to gossip or spend time talking or worrying about what everyone else is doing or has done. Those who matter don’t mind, and those who mind don’t matter.

I’m confident, and happy and can be serious, but prefer to be jovial about most things. It’s the big picture — enjoy life, have fun, be kind, and clap for everyone when they win!

Erica Massengill, Melissa Dreyer, and Robin Massengill at the 9/11 Memorial in New York City during Westminster week.

PETA Kills AnimalsBy Kim Krohn

“Why go for a costly, sickly, mass-produced purebred when shel-ters are full of one-of-a-kind mixed breeds who are literally dy-ing for a home?” — Ingrid Newkirk, President and Founder of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals

Last November I was doing some housework for a change when my husband turned on a broadcast of the 2016 Animal Rights National Conference. The conference had been held July 7-10, 2016, in Los Angeles and was featured on C-SPAN, which often takes a break from those oh-so-riveting congressio-nal debates and broadcasts topics of other interest to the public on weekends. It gave me a surprisingly good excuse to put down the dust cloth, and I soon realized very little had changed in the last 30 years.

If nothing else I have to give the Animal Rights (AR) move-ment props for persistence, because their message has not changed at all. I was reminded of my old partner in crime, Mary Beth Duerler with the Responsible Pet Owners Alliance (RPOA) in San Antonio, Texas, who once said, “You know that joke about how if I’d known I was going to live this long I would have taken better care of myself ? Well, if I’d known I’d be fighting this animal rights BS this long I would have kept more organized files.” The broadcast prompted me to make sure C-SPAN receives no tax dollars (they don’t) and to have a look at my quasi-organized files and the original AR agenda.

One of the landmark publications for those fighting the AR movement was Rod and Patti Strand’s The Hijacking of the Humane Movement, now 24 years old. In one of my original col-umns for A Little Bull about the AR movement I wrote of the movement’s 12-Point Agenda as published in Hijacking, and as they say, there is nothing new under the sun.

• Abolish animal research.• Abolish product testing on animals.• Establish vegetarianism as the standard Western diet.• Prohibit livestock grazing on public lands, phase out

intensive confinement systems of livestock production and eventually eliminate animal agriculture.

• Eliminate predator control on public lands and phase out the use of herbicides, pesticides and other toxic agricultural chemicals.

• Transfer animal welfare enforcement from the Department of Agriculture to an agency created to protect animals.

• Eliminate commercial trapping and fur ranching.• Prohibit sport hunting, fishing, and trapping.• End the international trade in wildlife and goods produced

from exotic and/or endangered fauna or flora.• Discourage any further breeding of companion animals and

abolish commerce in domestic and exotic animals for the pet trade.

• End the use of animals in entertainment and sports such

as racing, fox hunting, hare coursing, rodeos, circuses and other spectacles; and reappraise the use of animals in qua-si-educational institutions such as zoos and aquariums.

• End genetic manipulation of the species.

Item number 10, “discourage any further breeding of compan-ion animals,” and item number 12, “end genetic manipulation of the species,” are direct attacks on the sport of purebred dogs. This is why it is very important for breeders and exhibitors of purebred dogs to understand the full agenda of the Animal Rights movement. The same individuals who are trying to bring an end to hunting, fishing, fur farming, and research with ani-mals also have as a goal the elimination of the sport of purebred dogs. Mini breeders who live in areas where a small but vocal group of individuals are pushing for mandatory spay/neuter laws, breeding restrictions, and unreasonably high breeder per-mits and license fees for unaltered dogs should investigate the driving force behind these campaigns and the origin of funding. This is a common mode of operation by the ARs: If it is impos-sible to eliminate an undesirable activity outright, then regulate, license, and/or inspect it out of existence.

California has been a particular hotbed of this type of activity. A visit to the website for the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is scary indeed. Although some breeders insist that AR groups want only to end commercial breeding or “puppy mills” and are not out to stop responsible show breeders, check out the “Companion Animals – Pet or Prisoner” page on PE-TA’s web site at peta-online.org. There is a very clear statement: There is no such thing as responsible breeding. It doesn’t get any clearer than that.

(Full disclosure: I wrote the previous paragraph for an article published in ALB in 2000. The website URL has changed to peta.org, but not much else is different.)

PETA, located in Norfolk, Virginia, was something of a Johnny-Come-Lately on the AR scene, incorporating a mere 30 years ago in 1987. Two of the three original founders/board members, Ingrid Newkirk and Kim Stallwood, came here from the UK for the same reason Willie Sutton robbed banks: “That’s where the money is.” The group’s “Companion Animals” website section is full of anti-breeding propaganda, most of it related to “pet overpopulation.” Consider this information on Companion Animal Overpopulation: “Why are there so many unwanted cats and dogs? There are three main reasons: Many people fail to spay or neuter their dogs and cats, who then reproduce, creating enormous numbers of kittens and puppies. People still buy animals from breeders or pet stores (thereby supporting the puppy mills that supply them) instead of adopting homeless animals (emphasis mine)”.

Those of us who follow and study pet/shelter populations know that, particularly for dogs, shelter populations have been on a downward trend since the 1970s — so much so in some areas

(or, The More Things Change the More They Stay the Same)

Page 10: FOCUS ON JUNIOR HANDLERS Well done, Erica & Gabby! · Well done, Erica & Gabby! FOCUS ON JUNIOR HANDLERS. 2 Spring 2017 A Little Bull. A Little Bull Spring 2017 3 ... Carol Mercer

10 Spring 2017 A Little Bull

of the country that shelters and rescues are importing dogs and puppies from offshore and smuggling them in from Mexico to meet public demand for “rescue” dogs. There is also a substantial amount of “humane relocation” activity. Dogs and puppies from areas of the country where there are excess shelter and rescue dogs are transported to areas where the shelters are empty.

Additionally, consider this commentary from the PETA website “Spay and Neuter” section:

“Cities and counties all over the country are aggressive-ly addressing the animal overpopulation crisis, requiring everyone who chooses not to spay or neuter to pay a hefty breeder’s fee. Areas with mandatory spay-and-neuter laws have reported a significant reduction in the number of animals who are taken to their facilities and subsequently euthanized” (emphasis mine).

Anyone who has studied mandatory spay/neuter ordinances knows that statement is blatantly false and the effect is coun-terintuitive, as these ordinances always result in a substantial increase in shelter intake and euthanasia. Sharon Coleman with The Animal Council did exhaustive research on the original MSN ordinance enacted in San Mateo County, California, and demonstrated this effect in the early ‘90s. The criminalization of non-criminal behavior never has a happy ending.

PETA and Nathan Winograd, founder of the No-Kill Move-ment, have an ongoing online war, slinging brickbats at one another on their respective websites. PETA takes Winograd to task on their website for his promotion of no-kill shelters, accusing him of warehousing animals and causing suffering,

while Winograd takes PETA to the woodshed repeatedly on his blog and in the media for killing animals. Winograd’s No-Kill Movement has not been without problems and predict-able disasters due to the Law of Unintended Consequences. Arguably the kinks are still being worked out of the no-kill model; however, PETA has remained steadfast in support of its business model of killing animals to end suffering. They Love Them To Death.

Stories of PETA employees killing animals have been well publicized, including the 2005 story of two PETA employees charged with 31 felony counts of animal cruelty each after they were busted for dumping the dead bodies of 18 animals they had just picked up from a North Carolina shelter, claiming they would find homes for the animals. More dead animals were found in the van, which was registered to PETA. In a 2013 article in The Huffington Post Winograd wrote, “...in the last 11 years PETA has killed 29,426 dogs, cats, rabbits, and other domestic animals.” He continues, “Puppies killed by PETA in the back of a van — a donor-funded slaughterhouse on wheels. Despite $35,000,000 in annual revenues and millions of ‘animal-loving’ members, PETA does not even try to find them homes. PETA has no adoption hours, does no adoption pro-motion, has no adoption floor, but is registered with the State of Virginia as a ‘humane society’ or ‘animal shelter.’” (www.huffingtonpost.com/nathan-j-winograd/peta-kills-puppies-kit-tens_b_2979220.html)

In his blog Winograd writes,

“Last year (2015), the Commonwealth of Virginia over-whelmingly passed SB1381, a law which requires shelters to be ‘operated for the purpose of finding permanent adop-tive homes.’ In other words, SB 1381 does what the public already thinks shelters do and what the dictionary says they do, even though PETA, which is located in Virginia, does not. In fact, the bill was introduced in a response to PETA — which is licensed in Virginia as a shelter — killing over 90% of the animals, with little to no effort to find them homes” (www.nathanwinograd.com/?p=15076).

I listened to Newkirk’s address to the crowd at the Animal Rights National Conference. She rattled off a list of accom-plishments, which included Balenciaga, Gucci, and Patagonia suspending or ending all purchases of wool and wool products after being shown videos of sheep being punched in the face. She went on to say animals are not hamburgers, they’re not handbags, they’re not test tubes with whiskers, they’re not bur-glar alarms, they’re not cheap photo ops, and they’re not pests. “They’re individuals and we must protect all of them, even the animals we’re not familiar with.”

Newkirk also went on to preach about her objections to spe-ciesism. Biologically a species is a reproducing population, but the AR followers argue it is similar to racism and sexism, and individuals should not be treated any differently based on their species. They claim species classification has no moral signifi-cance. That mouse eating your Doritos in the cabinet is equal to a human. The crowd cheered Newkirk as she was spoke about helping dogs, even though most people know the truth: PETA kills dogs, and that fact won’t change any time soon.

Mentor Me!By Samantha BrownMentorship, by definition, is “a relationship in which a more experienced or knowledgeable person helps to guide a less ex-perienced or less knowledgeable person.” This definition clearly defines two roles in a relationship; however the secondary role of the Mentee seems to be commonly misinterpreted. The purpose of this article is to assist the Mentee in fulfilling their role to form a healthy functioning relationship that benefits both parties.

“I’m new (or not so new), no one will mentor me!”

“It’s so hard to find a good mentor anymore.”

“Unless you are already a “somebody” in dogs, it is impossi-ble to be successful.”

These are all statements from my generation of fanciers in one form or another. I would challenge the statement that mentor-ship is difficult to come by and would pose the question “what have you done to be a good Mentee?” Silence. In the true spirit of the mentorship relationship, the Mentee should play a far more active role than the Mentor! Below I have outlined a few self-help mentoring steps. Consider these for a Mentee, by a Mentee:

Reading – What if I told you I’ve been personally mentored for hundreds of hours on fundamentals of breeding dogs by Patricia Trotter (Vin Melca), Espen Engh ( Jet’s) and Raymond Oppenheimer (Ormandy) as well as mentored on handling techniques by George Alston and Frank Sabella? You can too! These are all authors of books on my Kindle right now. I’ve learned some fantastic things and formed intelligent questions for my mentors from these books. (Currently, I’m reading Keys to Top Breeding Vol 2 which incorporates ideas from 22 breeders from 7 countries!).

Pedigree Research – The depth of knowledge that comes from understanding how pedigrees are woven together by master breeders is invaluable. A bonus is it allows you to become famil-iar with the current kennels, so you can skip the question, “oh who is he/she by?” You should be able to look in the catalog and at least understand in a basic sense the pedigree behind dogs showing in your local area. Then you can ask a seasoned breeder questions like, “I really like that young dog in the ring, I see he is by a dog that was out a few years ago, what was his sire like in the flesh? I only know him from photos?” Doesn’t that sound better than “I like that dog, who is he?”

Ringside – There’s an entire college education to be had at a specialty show. Attend a specialty show for your breed, sit quietly by yourself, and get a catalog to mark. At first you might not know what you’re looking at — just focus on one part at a time. Eyes and ears are easy, who has good ears? Who has a good eye? What makes up a good expression or a poor expres-sion? Eventually you’ll be able to put pieces together and make educated statements like, “I appreciate the eye placement on this animal, but perhaps he could use a tidier ear.” Doesn’t that

sound better than plopping down next to someone with 20+ years of experience and saying, “Teach me something” or “What do you think of that dog”?

Ring Stewarding – This was a critical part of my education. It allows you to get up close and personal with some experienced judges! Don’t forget, these judges were successful breeders to some extent before they got here! How do they command the ring? What’s their unique procedure for evaluating each animal? How do they sort through large BOB classes full of top specials? The actual work of ring stewarding is fairly straight-forward and easy, so you’ll have plenty of time to keep your ears and eyes open to learn throughout the day. Bonus: ring stew-arding is required as part of your future judging licensure, you usually get great parking, free lunch and it is 100% volunteer so you are giving back to the sport of dogs!

But wait! This sounds like a lot of work … that’s the point. The idea that your work is done because you’ve found a great master breeder who has agreed to mentor you is rather dangerous. Both parties suffer when the Mentee doesn’t progress in their edu-cation and career due to lack of knowledge. The Mentor, who likely already struggles with time as a resource, may become frustrated or distant and the Mentee ends up feeling let down. Save both of yourselves a destructive relationship and ensure you are each doing your part. If you’re already in this boat, it’s time to step up and really think through that next encounter you arrange with your mentor. Your relationship will be all the better for it.

In conclusion, the list of ways you can prepare yourself for that critical moment when a longtime breeder sits next to you ring-side and strikes up a conversation are endless. Be ready to ask highly intelligent questions of your mentor, as they are likely highly intelligent people. The Mentee should think of time spent with a Mentor as time invested in them, and our Mentors need to be wise investors as their time is a precious resource! What you should not expect is that you are entitled to their time and efforts simply because you are new. Becoming a good Mentee should include providing a benefit to your mentor, even if it is simply intelligent, pleasant conversation about dogs.

14 Spring 2017 A Little Bull

I have been asked to say a few words about Marilyn Drewes. Marilyn Drewes passed away the end of January at 87 years young. She spent many years breeding and showing Bull Terri-ers and Miniature Bull Terriers.

Marilyn purchased her first BT from Al Bibby, a noted breed-er. Marilyn taught Al’s son and found out Al had BT puppies and the rest is history, as they say. Dutchess, CH Nippy’s Silver Dutchess was first of a long line of BTs and then MBTs that Marilyn raised and showed. Marilyn became a very active member of the Bull Terrier Club of America, serving as the club’s AKC Gazette correspondent for over 25 years. Marilyn headed up the BTCA Genetic Defects Committee, encouraging breeders to health test their breeding animals. She served for many years on the BTCA Board of Directors and was the club’s delegate to the AKC. Marilyn also judged the Silverwood competition twice.

Marilyn was a teacher by profession and a student by desire. She began to study the breed and soon found herself an AKC judge of Bull Terriers. By the time Minis were accepted into the Terrier Group of the AKC, in January 1992, Marilyn was able to judge all breeds in the Terrier Group. I am not sure how Marilyn became the Registrar of the MBTCA prior to AKC acceptance. She kept all the pedigrees and registration paper-work, including photos of the Minis registering with the club. These records had to be kept to provide the AKC with accurate records prior to AKC recognition.

Marilyn acquired her first Mini, CH Crescent Nippy’s Tiny Tyke, from Donly Chorn. Tyke was a charming little dog who

soon won my heart. Marilyn and I were on our way to Silver-wood just outside of Chicago in October 1993 when Marilyn casually mentioned that Donly had a very nice show-quality bitch puppy looking for a home. I met Suzy and she slept in my bed that night and almost every night for the rest of her life. Marilyn had a way of making her ideas seem like yours, as I learned through experience.

Marilyn always had room for a bully in need and shared her love of the breed with many. She loved to feed people, and no trip to Marilyn’s was complete without a filling meal with dessert! Marilyn made great brownies.

Marilyn could always be counted on for an adventure, whether it was following “a new route“ to an old destination or insulat-ing the floor under the porch or trying a new restaurant. She was game for it all! She once accompanied me to pick up an owner surrender rescue. The poor dog was skinny and dirty, afraid of the owner and his mother, who used her broom to keep the bad dog away from her. Marilyn said she would give the dog a steak if he bit the woman. We did not stay long. On the way home, we stopped at McDonalds and bought the dog a Quarter Pounder with Cheese.

The Bully world has lost a great champion of the breed and many of us have lost a dear friend and mentor. I am sure that Marilyn is enjoying BT and MBT antics as you read this and is making sure the coffee is on and the brownies are out of the oven. Rest well my friend. Letty and I miss you.

Mini Bull HeroMedical service dog saves ownerBy Kimarie WolfWhen Lucille Ziccardi trained her first Miniature Bull Terrier to be her medical service dog, she hoped she was adding a layer of security and safety to living with diabetes. What she didn’t predict was that her dog would save her life.

Lucille started training Porscha (Simatrabull’s Porscha Lu-cia) to recognize low blood sugar when she was just a puppy. Porscha alerts Lucille by barking and jumping on her when her blood sugar drops below 100.

Fast-forward two years.

On a plane ride last fall, Porscha alerted Lucille that her blood sugar had dropped while the plane was landing. Immediately after deplaning, Lucille ran her blood sugar: 67, a very low number. She ate a quick snack and was able to quickly bring her numbers into the safe range. Good job, Porscha.

A few months later, Lucille was sitting on the couch. Anyone with a smart and busy Mini Bull recognizes the value of teach-ing their dog new tricks. Lucille was just fooling around and picked something close at hand. She grabbed her cell phone and took about 15 minutes teaching Porscha to hold the cell phone in her mouth. A fun trick that didn’t really have a plan, but ended up being a crucial element in saving Lucille’s life two weeks later.

Lucille’s new cardiologist ordered a slew of new tests in a single week. Unfortunately, with a crazy schedule of doctor’s appointments and tests, her eating and testing schedule was off balance. By the end of the week, Lucille was tired but made it to the pulmonary doctor and home by 2 p.m. At 5 p.m. she was prepping dinner.

“Porscha had her toy, she started pawing and barking at me. Pushing her nose into me,” Lucille said. “I thought she wanted to play.” Lucille passed out. When she woke up, she was on the floor. Porscha was pawing at her and had finally been able to wake her up. Lucille estimates she was unconscious from 15 to 30 minutes. She was soaked in sweat and slurring her words.

“I told Porscha, ‘Get my cell phone. Phone, Porscha!’” Lucille recalled. “I couldn’t believe she understand my slurred words, but she did. She jumped over me, ran to the living room. My cell phone was on the couch. She picked it up in her mouth and brought it to me. I was finally able to push myself to sit up, but I couldn’t stand.”

Lucille called her friend Jamie Morris. All she could say was, “help.” Jamie and her friend Victor dropped everything and came right over. When they arrived, medications in hand, Lu-cille was in and out of consciousness. They called the ambulance and Lucille was hospitalized.

At first, the doctors weren’t sure if she had suffered a stroke or a heart-related incident. However, once the tests were complete

they determined it was a blood sugar crash. With a critically low number — 57 — the doctors were amazed Lucille hadn’t ended up in a coma. Thankfully, Porscha was able to revive her enough to help her call for assistance.

The big learning from these two incidents? Porscha knows her job. It might look like she is just playing, but she can do both. Lucille says she won’t ever ignore her barking and jumping again. She runs around the house with her toy in her mouth, but she can alert just as well with a toy as without!

Porscha has had a great conformation career showing with Jamie and has already earned her Bronze Grand Championship. She also has her Advanced Canine Good Citizenship title. Their next endeavor together will be a foray into Rally Obedience.

Good girl, Porscha! Thanks to Lucille for sharing Porscha’s story with us. Stay healthy!

18 Spring 2017 A Little Bull

Gabby still has puppy moments where she will start playing tug of war with her lead. I have to keep her focused with doing tricks like sitting and shaking, but Sydney is all business with the occasional bark for food!

We ended up with flights there and back where the row across from us had open seats, so Mom moved across and Gabby and Sydney each had their own seats.

When Erica Massingill and Gabby (GCH CH Sunrise Minotaur Something to Talk About), her 2-year-old Mini Bull Terrier, walked onto the floor at Madison Square Garden with the Terrier Group on the last night of the 141st Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show,

they were living every dog lover’s dream. What made the night particularly exciting for Erica is that she is just 15 years old and began competing in Juniors only three years ago. She’s been our breed’s top Junior Handler for each of those three years.

Her first show Mini was Sydney (Minotaur Little Wing at Sun-rise), whom she fell in love with when visiting breeder Melissa Dreyer with her mom, Robin Massingill. Melissa and Robin are longtime friends who showed Great Danes, so Erica had been around dogs and show rings. But it was Sydney who piqued Erica’s interest in competing herself.

“After being around Sydney and playing with her at handling classes, I really wanted to start showing,” Erica said.

Erica started Feb. 14 in New York showing Sydney in the

Junior Showmanship event. Then it was off to the breed judg-ing, where she faced stiff competition among both dogs and longtime handlers.

“All I really wanted was for Gabby to show good, considering that it was going to be live streamed, and she did just that!” Erica said.

She kept her cool by keeping her mind on the task at hand.

“Whenever I’m showing, I really try to stay focused on Gabby and what I need to do to show her to where she looks her best,” Erica said. “Whenever I start looking around at the other dogs or handlers it makes me nervous, and Gabby feels that and I’ve learned she doesn’t show as well.”

Look for Erica with Gabby and Sydney at shows this summer and at MBTCA National in Modesto this fall. And later?

“Someday I hope for Gabby to have puppies and I would love to try a different breed in the juniors ring.,” Erica said. “And college definitely, but what college and what career I’m not sure yet. I’m only in the 9th grade, so I still have some time decide.”

A rising star’s Westminster story

I love their individuality — no mini is ever the same!

I absolutely love that suit. I think black looks so pretty with Gabby and it had a little sparkle!

[The weirdest part was] backstage at the Garden. There were so many people and cameras.

I looked up and [the Jumbotron] distracted me. I started to think, “Oh wow, I’m actually showing at Madison Square Garden, this is crazy!!”

Three more Juniors to watch

Bailey Smith Andrew Munoz Julianna Bugeja The daughter of Kathleen Coffman, Bailey began showing competitively in 2015 with Emma (Envision Reg-istan Mayhem). She spent the 2016 show year competing with Ramen (CH Skybar Fokker Fan-Fan) as well as a Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Now 15, Bailey is showing Mission (LBK’s MuleCreek Set in Stone), her Amer-ican Staffordshire Terrier, and Global (Patronus Marauder’s Map).

Bailey’s skills as a trainer are shown in the titles she has put on Patro-nus dogs: an AKC STAR puppy on Magic (Patronus Magic N AKtion) and both an AKC STAR puppy and a Canine Good Citizen on Bubbles (Patronus Beguiling Bubbles).

Julianna has a double pedigree in Miniature Bull Terriers: Her grand-mother is Kate Maurer of Ironwood Miniature Bull Terriers and her aunt is Sara LaBadie, who co-owns several Ironwood dogs.

Julianna was 5 when she made her handling debut with Journee (Bonsai Don’t Stop Believing) during the PeeWee Handling event at 2016 MBTCA National. (The duo also made a memorably adora-bull entry in the costume contest as matching Elsas from “Frozen.”) She’ll be 6 this show season and entering PeeWee Handling events whenever they are available.

Like many Junior Handlers, Andrew Munoz comes from a dog-show fam-ily: His mom, Irene Munoz, breeds Dachshunds. His first experience in the show ring was with a retired Min-iature Longhaired Dachshund named Tiki (CH Raisn’L Yo Soi Tiki ML).

Since 2015, Andrew has competed with Sochi (Patronus Celestia Sor-ceress) in Juniors and in performance events. He was the second-place MBT Junior Handler in 2015 and 2016, and put an AKC Coursing Ability title on Sochi as well.

Dog care is a family affair

ABOVE: 17-year-old Ethan is a godsend when it’s time to take Ginger to be groomed, says Corinne Colbert. “She refuses to walk into Petsmart, so we have to carry her inside or get a shopping cart! Ethan is my dog wrangler.” Ginger doesn’t hold any grudges, apparently: She sleeps in Ethan’s bed every night.

RIGHT: Kate Maurer’s 3-year-old grand-son, Mark Bujega, joins his sister Julianna in helping to care for Ironwood dogs. “He is in charge of loving Lil Bear (first and foremost), then brushing him and feeding him,” Kate reports. “They also spend time beachcombing for shells and Petosky stones along the shores of Lake Huron. Both of the grandkids are very helpful in caring for the dogs, especially at puppy time!”

FAR LEFT AND LEFT: Like many kids of dog breeders, Meghan Barnes’ daughters Peyton and Hailey include “puppy cuddling” and “pack walking” among their daily chores.

LEFT: Caitlin Vance has been teaching her 4-year-old niece, Faryn, and 11-year-old nephew, Linden, about showing MBTs. Faryn is practicing with Lottie and Linden has Lottie’s daughter, Molly. They hope to start entering some shows this spring, Caitlin said.

22 Spring 2017 A Little Bull

By Carol GrayIt was a pleasure for Gord and me to attend and observe the procedures of the Miniature Bull Terrier International Com-petition and the Championship weekend in Coventry, UK, on September 24 and 25, 2016. The venue of the Royal Court Hotel offers an excellent facility for confirmation and agility activities alike. This weekend is a must-see event for the bucket list of any Mini person.

The International Competition event was conducted in Trophy Show format and was judged by Simon Parsons (UK) and Ste-phen Craven (Aus). Bill Poole (US) acted as referee. There were eight teams — including four from Germany, two from the UK, and one each from Spain and France.

Each team was represented by six minis, consisting of an under two-year-old, an over two-year-old, and

a Championship dog and bitch. The winning team was UK MBTC Headliners; the runner-up team was the DCBT House of Fun Team from Bavaria. All the teams were dressed in their colors and were paraded into the ring to the beat of their own music in a very fashionable manner — an impressive spectacle where they competed for the Transcend Cup.

The Championship Show had over 100 entries and was judged by Dominic Clarke (UK). Best of Breed and the Dog Challenge Certificate went to Future Star Vom Hause Wilke. The Bitch Challenge Certificate was won by Reebooks Bounty. Best Puppy was Decadence Destinee.

Critiques

Saturday, October 22, 2016Judge Deb GuerreroI’d like to thank the Miniature Bull Terrier Club of America for allowing me the honor to have judged the 50th Anniver-sary Van Hildrikhusen Trophy Show.

Being a breeder of Miniature Bull Terriers, I have watched our breed evolve within the past 10 years. I am thrilled to say “Wow!” and congratulations to all the breeders for taking the time and effort to produce some outstanding dogs. The heads, breed type, bone, substance and conformation have come a long way from the past. I ‘d have to say that all the virtues of the Miniature Bull Terriers shown that day were just abso-lutely lovely.

I had a wonderful time judging the VH Trophy Show and it will be a special moment in time for me to always cherish.

Keep up the good work, breeders and exhibitors!!!

This was an honor I will never forget.

Thank you,

Deb Guerrero

Desert Empire Terrier ClubThursday, January 5 • Judge Carolyn AlexanderAnyone who judges will tell you that the hardest judging comes when one does not have good choices. That was not a problem this day and rarely seems to be an issue in MBT anymore. I have great regard for the MBT breeders and exhibitors who over the last decade have made tremendous progress in the health and beauty of this wonderful breed. Overall, I found especially high quality in bitches. The lineup in the specials ring was breathtaking. Thank you for this beautiful entry!

Best of BreedGCH Brownstone’s Gunnin’ For Glory (CH Omega’s Angelo Dundee ex Shadbraye Dare To Dazzle)Breeder: Crissy Brown-Stone, Steve Stone & Rosalind ClamperOwners: Amy J Hogge MD, Crissy Brown-Stone & Andrea Johnson

Luke Baggenstos, Agent

My toughest decision of the day… In an outstanding lineup, two stunning bitches were vying for BOB! Both #16 and #22 are magnificent show dogs and representatives of this breed! #16 is not as flashy and exciting as #22, but she offers some slightly better virtue in several areas. She is nicely sized and has beautiful length of head and expression. Correct bite. Lovely set, size, and shape of ears. Moves very well, jaunty while hold-ing her topline and tail solidly stacked and moving.

Best of Opposite SexGCH Kingsmere Rambunctious Knute Rockne (CH Menusha’s Its Just A Blackeye BN RN ex Kingsmere Rambunctious

Tinkerbell)Breeder: Linda Lethin • Owner: Kristy Utt, DVM

Compact, well-made white male with black brindle eye markings. Solid head quality with a particularly strong muzzle and correct ear set. Of good proportion overall. Nicely angulated overall, especially in the rear, which is reflected in the good movement.

Select Bitch/Owner-HandlerGCH Kingsmere Rhinestone Hot Tashi CGC(Bullcreeks Babyface Jackson of Kingsmere ex Kingsmere Rambunctious Tinkerbell)Breeder: Linda Lethin • Owners: Heather Rhine & Linda Lethin

An incredibly lovely bitch with excellent quality. Stylish and supremely typey, especially in head fill and expression. Slightly under. This bitch went on to an Owner Handler Group 4 on this day and did considerable winning the rest of the weekend in this highly competitive show.

Winners DogRichbrands Mr James Cagney(CH Bonsai Gnomeo ex Richbrands-Pax of Temris CA RATN)Breeder/Owner: Brandy Escamilla and Richard Escamilla

From the Bred By Class, a quality black brindle male of overall good make and shape. Filled muzzle with good depth and down-turn, nicely set ears and typey expression. One instanding canine. Good bone and substance, nicely sized. Jaunty movement.

Reserve Winners DogKingsmere Baccarat of Iceni CGC (CH Bullcreeks Babyface Jackson ex CH Kingsmere Rambunctious Riot)Breeder: Terrena and Ronald G. Whyte and Linda LethinOwners: Lynne Myall and Kyle Henegar

From the Open Dog class, a brindle-and-white male who is well made, but does not have quite the somewhat more correct proportion and substance of Winners Dog. Good set on and carriage of tail. Lovely expression. Correct bite, lovely ear set. Moved beautifully.

Winners Bitch/Best of WinnersSunlyn Paniola N Ardry Knutella (GCH Kingsmere Rambunctious Knute Rockne ex CH Paniola Won’t Back

Down At SunlynOwners: Steve & Evelyn Laughlin, Laurel Dalire & Kristy Utt DVMBreeder: Steve & Evelyn Laughlin & Laurel Dalire

From the 9-12 month bitch class, a very typey white bitch with brindle ears, good length of head, strong underjaw, attractive downturn and good fill. Tiny, well placed eyes that offer an enticing varminty expression. Ears are a little large on this youngster, but are well placed. Front is a little loose and she is a little lacking in forechest. She moves adequately and holds her topline…she moves better going than coming.

Desert Empire Terrier ClubFriday, January 6 • Judge Robert K. ThomasI would like to thank the Miniature Bull Terrier Club of Amer-ica for inviting me to judge this show. There were an excellent number of entries and the quality of Miniature Bull Terriers in California is always outstanding. It was my pleasure to judge this event once again; unfortunately I was under the weather and my critique is not as complete as I would like.

Kennel Club of Palm Springs Saturday, January 7 • Judge Mrs. Gayle DenmanThank you to the MBTCA for this lovely assignment in Indio, California. Thank you to the exhibitors for the entry and good sportsmanship. It is such a pleasure to judge the breeds that I so dearly love. The weather held and the Miniature Bull Terriers and handlers were having a good time all weekend. Unfortu-nately, Dick and I were unable to participate in the festivities due to other judging commitments as well as studying for an AKC interview on 14 new terrier breeds very early Sunday morning.

The quality of the miniature bull terriers on this weekend was impressive. The judging started out with the very first class of dogs being of excellent breed type and it certainly did not stop there. What a delight it was to have so many Miniature Bull Terriers of such depth.

32 Spring 2017 A Little Bull

Miniature Bull Terrier Club of Southern California • Kennel Club of Palm SpringsSunday, January 8 • Judge David A. AlexanderIt is impressive to see the progress the breed has made in the time I have been judging them. I was particularly struck today by the head quality of many of the dogs, especially in the areas of width of muzzle, expressive eyes, and unblemished profiles. There is still plenty of work to be done in keeping the breed within the desired size limits, however, as the majority of the dogs exceed fourteen inches. In general, bodies have attained better structure although there is some need for more layback of shoulder and more length in upper arm.

Strengths were definitely on the side of the bitches today with two super examples of breed type vying for the top spot. With the exception of the Best of Opposite Sex, my winners today were within, or very close to, the upper limit of size. I feel that this is something that deserves increased importance in adjudi-cating the breed going forward. Pleasingly, I found good breed type to go along with that.

It was a pleasure to go over your dogs. Thank you all for such a nice entry.

Best of Winners, Winners DogRhinestone Lulu’s Lover Boy (GCH Kingsmere Rambunctious Romeo ex. GCH Bullikountry’s It’s All

About Me)Denita McLeod nd Heather Rhine

A white dog of fairly correct size, he excels in virtually every area except one. His profile is a bit flat in the middle, but when you consider what a stunning eye he has, allied to great width of muzzle, heavy bone, and his muscular well-balanced body, he had more than enough to compensate and was a worthy winner.

Reserve Winners Dog Kingsmere Rocksteady Start Me Up(GCH Bullcreeks Babyface Jackson of Kingsmere ex. CH Kingsmere

Rambunctious Riot)Jonathan Cortez, DVM and Kris Cortez

Lacking some of the bone and substance of the Winners Dog, this boy shows good proportions and is very well constructed with a strong, well-arched neck being a notable feature. He does have a little too much curve over the loin however. His head has good length, and his expression is keen. Bite slightly under.

Winners Bitch Kingsmere Rootn Redhot Riot(Bullcreeks Babyface Jackson of Kingsmere ex. Kingsmere Rambunctious Riot)Loreen Jacobson & Terrena Whyte

Despite a slight shortness in muzzle, this was one of the ex-hibits that had excellent head qualities – very nice expression, smooth downface, and good width of muzzle. She is within size but could be shorter in body and have less arch over the loin but is strongly put together with good body volume and a strong neck. Red and white masked bitch, slightly undershot.

Reserve Winners BitchSunlyn Paniola N Ardry Knutella(GCH Kingsmere Rambunctious Knute Rookne ex. CH Paniola Wont Back

down At Sunlyn) Steve & Evelyn Laughlin & Laurel Dalire & Kristy Utt DVM

This white bitch has a well-muscled, shapely body with good bone to match and is close to the correct size. Her front could have more lay back of shoulder, and lacks forechest. The curve of her profile is disturbed by her brows, but she has much quality in her head given its curve, varminty eyes, neat ears, and adequate under eye fill. Missing a left canine, her occlusion is correct.

Best of BreedGCH Kingsmere Rhinestone Hot Tashi CGC(GCH CH Bullcreeks Babyface Jackson of Kingsmere ex. CH Kingsmere

Rambunctious Tinkerbell)Heather Rhine & Linda Lethin

This white bitch has a stunning headpiece, and indeed excels in breed type. Her combination of neat, erect ears, varminty eyes, flatness of skull between the ears (seen from the front), and un-der eye width and fill all combine to give her a truly outstanding expression. She is also within the upper limit of desired size. Her body is short-backed, sturdy and well-muscled and she was presented in excellent condition. Her topline is correct and her tail well set but carried up. Her construction reflects the short-comings I mentioned in the opening remarks, and consequently her movement could have more reach and drive. Nevertheless, she is an outstanding example of the breed.

Best of Opposite SexCH Johann Vom Wendland(Merlindan Captain Chaos ex. Wyona Vom Wendland)Luis Flores & Erick Flores & Dr. Christine Sawyers

I particularly liked the make and shape of this brindle and white dog and rewarded him despite his being well over the height limit. He could be shorter in back but possesses a well-made front, and a muscular well-angled rear with his short hocks being a noteworthy asset. He is nicely contoured overall with good length of head, and a well-arched, strong neck. He has a pleasing, if not keen expression, and well-set, neat ears.

Select DogGCH Kingsmere Rambunctious Knute Rockne(CH Menusha’s Its Just A Blackeye BN RN ex. Kingsmere Rambunctious

Tinkerbell)Kristy Utt, DVM

A white dog with a brindle left eye patch, he is very muscular but with not the same quality in front construction as the Best of Opposite Sex, lacking some forechest. He was a reluctant shower on the day which did not enhance his chances. He is short backed, of good size, has a correctly set tail, and good bone for his size. He was another of the dogs with a quality head with its nicely set eyes, strong, well-filled muzzle, and smooth profile.

Select BitchGCH Brownstone’s Gunnin’ For Glory(CH Omega’s Angelo Dundee ex. Shadbraye Dare To Dazzle)Amy J Hogge MD & Crissy Brown & Andrea Johnson

This white bitch with a brindle eye patch also excels in breed type and is pleasingly within the desired size. She competed strongly for the top spot, losing out principally in intensity of expression. Nevertheless, this bitch has an excellent head composed of a smooth profile of good length, well set, dark eyes, neatly set ears, and good underjaw. Her muzzle is well filled but less so than the BOB’s. On the move she shows some restriction in front move-ment, but her front is clean and her rear is strong with good turn of stifle. She is also slightly longer in body than the BOB, but this does not detract from her overall excellence.

Superstition Kennel ClubSaturday, March 4 • Judge Desmond MurphyIt was a pleasure to judge such a high-quality entry. Although there were only 3 class males and 3 class bitches, the quality was nice. There were seven champions entered and it was a great ex-ample of how far the breed has come and the positive direction it is headed. The ring was full of quality and virtues. So pleased that only one entry was very large in height. The Breeders have to be congratulated on how well the size problem is getting much better. Now that we see so many good heads, hopefully the breeders will try to work harder on the mouths. It can be done. To compete in Terrier Groups, they need a perfect mouth.

Thank you to all the exhibitors and breeders for making my assignment so enjoyable.

Best of BreedGCH Kingsmere Rhinestone Hot TashiWords are hard to express the quality of this bitch. The old saying, The great ones blind you to their faults. She is a classic example. She is full of virtues in all areas. Her very, very minor blemish is she is good on her mouth, but not absolutely perfect. What is so exceptional about her, is you could blow her up to be a Bull Terrier and so would be a Super Bull Terrier. She truly is a great Bull Terrier in a miniature size.

Best of Opposite SexCH Johann Vom WendlandThis is a dog that I have admired since he was a very young puppy. Now at just 2 years, he is really coming into his own. Miniature Bull Terrier Club of AmericaSaturday, March 11 • Judge Alison J. IbbitsonThank you to the MBTCA for inviting me to judge this show. The entry was deep in quality with several animals in the classes and among the specials who could easily win Best of Breed on a given day. I found myself wishing for Awards of Merit to hand out! As always, the exhibitors were a pleasure and the sports-manship excellent.

Winners Dog, Best of Winners and Best of BreedKingsmere Rocksteady The Webmaster (GCH Bullcreek’s Babyface Jackson at Kingsmere ex CH Kingsmere

Rambunctious Riot) Miller, Schaeffer and Lethin

11-month-old, beautifully marked brindle and white with a sparkling personality. Head is wide and very filled from the eyes to the nose leather, broad topskull, profile is an unbroken arc. Eyes are dark and nicely placed on the head, lending good expression. Lovely width and depth of underjaw. Good length of neck into a decent shoulder and short, firm topline. Correct tailset. Lovely straight front and nice bone for size. Square and balanced, he strides out well on his nicely angulated rear. This boy is a contender in any company.

Reserve Winners DogTuxedo Where’s My Baguette At Rock And Rose (Isengrin du Domaine d’Odin ex GCH Tuxedo Lil Queen o’Hearts) Pressler-Tash and McDonnell

Another nicely marked brindle and white puppy. This one is just six months of age. Lovely fat head, somewhat short in foreface, nicely turned and filled. Good eye and expression, neat ears. Nice length of neck into a shapely topline. Really nice bone and substance for his age and style. Straight front, neat feet, moderate angles at both ends. Movement a bit “puppy loose,” but all the pieces are there. I look forward to seeing him in another six months.

Winners BitchTriumph Daytona At Moonstone (GCH Bullcreeks Babyface Jackson at Kingsmere ex GCH Eger-Vari Mini

Lady Gaga) Thomas and Lindstedt

White bitch with headmark who is square and nicely balanced. This is an athletic bitch, shown in hard, fit condition. Head is moderately filled and turned with beautiful little ears right up on top. Lovely dark eyes well-placed on the head. Long, muscular neck into a decent shoulder, short, firm topline, correct tailset and moderate rear angulation. Clean front. She strode out well with lots of drive behind on her fully developed second thigh. Fully mature and rippling with muscle, she is a poster child for con-ditioning and stood out in the crowd of class bitches. I was told during photos that this win finished her championship.

Reserve Winners BitchKenron’s Sweet Lil Somethin’ At Valentino (GCH Kenron’s Hit the Ground Running ex CH Kenron’s Alyce in Wonderland)Robards and Pethke

Charming youngster who is somewhat deceptive until you han-dle her. Head is somewhat short, but is nicely filled and turned, nice eye shape and neat ears. Muscular neck, good body volume, nice bone for size. Could have a shorter back. She moved out well all ways of the ring with the required “jaunty air.”

Best of Opposite SexCH Bulligomingo-Omega’s Ponce De Leon (GCH Omega’s Angelo Dundee ex Calypso’s White Flurry) Henson, Barnes, Cairns and Benoliel

Now fully mature, this is a TYPEY petite jewel. Head is turned and filled with a strong underjaw and tiny erect ears. Expression is evil. Lovely length of neck into a short back, solid topline and correct tailset. Nice bone for size, clean front and drives well from behind. Well balanced and completely square. It was a very close call between her and the BOB winner.

Select DogGCH Johann Vom Wendland (Merlindan Captain Chaos ex Wyona Vom Wendland) Flores, Flores and Sawyers

Lovely, small brindle and white male with a nice square outline. He did not have the scope of the winner.

Select BitchGCH Eggstream Divinity (GCH Manowar by Warbonnet ex CH Eggstream Renegade Stargazer) Duncan and Wyzard

Lovely white bitch with sweeping bodylines, nice bone and substance. Not the extreme type of the BOS.

Sweepstakes • Judge Kim BebbMy thanks to the Miniature Bull Terrier Club of America for allowing me to judge this sweepstakes and thank you to all the owners who entered their dogs. It is so much easier to judge from outside the ring. I do appreciate the opportunity to get in the ring and get my hands on the dogs to really see them. This was a lovely entry of puppies and I shall follow their careers to see how they all progress. My Best in Match went to the 9-12 month white bitch whose bone, substance and maturity gave her the edge on the day.

Best in MatchIronwood Can’t Bear To Be Without YouJohnson and Maurer

This is a lovely white bitch with brindle eye markings. She possesses good, solid, round bone all the way down through her pasterns. She has a nicely arched neck, a decent shoulder and topline, and a nice deep, barrel chest, with a beautiful front. She has plenty of bone and substance throughout. Her profile has good finish, and her bite is scissors. She moves well. This is a quality bitch with loads of virtue.

Best of Opposite SexOmega’s Never Enufbull With BenmarBarnes, Hamilton, and Cairns

This is a handsome brindle-and-white dog who is very much a bull terrier in miniature. His head is filled right up, with proper length and a gentle curve, finished off with a lovely turn at the end. His head has good width, with plenty of underjaw and a scissors bite with good canines. His neck is long and flows into nicely laid back shoulders, good topline, and proper tailset above good rear angulation. All of his parts flow nicely together which shows in his good movement. Really a lovely little dog.

Miniature Bull Terrier Club of AmericaSunday, March 12 • Judge Susan MurphyThank you to the Miniature Bull Terrier Club of America for the invitation to judge this specialty show in conjunction with the Bull Terrier Club of St. Louis’ weekend. Your judge for the Sunday show, Susan Murphy.

Best of BreedCH Bulligomingo-Omega’s Ponce De Leon(GCH Omega’s Angelo Dundee ex Calypso’s White Flurry) Henson, Barnes, Cairns & Benoliel

Typey white bitch with a lovely head of good proportions, turned and filled right down through the muzzle. Striking expression with a small eye and good ear carriage. Nicely bal-anced with good round bone and plenty of substance for her size. Good reach of neck leading into a fairly well laid shoul-der, solid topline and well-angulated quarters. Moves out well and covered the ground with purpose.

Best of Opposite Sex, Best of Winners & Winners DogKingsmere Rocksteady The Webmaster(GCH Bullcreek’s Babyface Jackson at Kingsmere ex Ch. Kingsmere

Rambunctious Riot) Miller, Schaefer & LethinBrindle-and-white dog with plenty of virtue. His head is of good proportions, with a gentle profile, well filled and packed right down through the muzzle. Tiny eye and ears right on top offer that wanted expression. Well-balanced with adequately laid shoulder, short back, solid topline and strong quarters. Moved very well both coming and going.

Reserve Winners DogOmega’s Never Enufbull With Benmar(Extravert Camouflage ex CH Omega’s Hidden Treasure At Benmar) Barnes, Hamilton & Cairns

Black brindle and white dog with a long, clean head of good proportions. He is fairly well made throughout with good bone for his frame. Nice front, solid topline and good quarters. Moved fairly well.

Winners BitchIronwood Can’t Bear To Be Without You(Ironwood Diamond in the Rough ex Bonsai Don’t Stop Believing)Johnson & Maurer

Typey white bitch with a well filled head, gently turned, show-ing just a bit of brow. She is a corky little number with plenty of bone and substance. Fairly well made with nice straight front and well-laid shoulder, solid topline and strong quarters. Moves well in both directions.
