INTRODUCTION

- Disturbances in the normal functioning of the proteins has consequences as diseases. The intervention of molecular biology in these disorders have allowed further understand the pathogenesis of these diseases, and seek support in diagnosis and therapy, such as gene therapy.

Important piece in brain tumor puzzle found by scientists.

Glioblastoma is the most common and lethal brain cancer. . It is critical to understand cancer growing pathways in the stem cells for development of stem cells targeted therapies.

SUMO 1

CDK6

STABILIZES CDK6 PROTEIN IN THE CANCER

RENEWAL AND GROWTH OF THE

CANCER STEM CELLS IN GLIOBLASTOMA.

• The main result of the research was: Inhibition of SUMO1 eliminates the stem cells and suppresses the cancer progression

SUPPRESSES CDK

CELL CYCLE

STUDENT COMMENT

These results are very significant for neuroscience; open an alternative way to treat glioblastoma. Since surgical resection, chemotherapy and radiation do not provide a good quality of life and life expectancy is short. With the discovery of this mechanism an important advance in the treatment of brain tumors is achieved

Defects in fatty acid transport proteins linked to schizophrenia, autism.

• RIKEN . Sciencedaily. July 15, 2014

Neuroscientists report that defects in Fatty Acid Binding Proteins (FABPs) may help to explain the pathology in some cases of schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorders.

• The brain is composed of lipids that provide structure and signaling functions, and disruption of lipid transport to or within the brain can lead to anomalous neurological symptoms.

• low levels of some polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) including essential fatty acids in schizophrenic and autistic patients

FABP 7

FABP7 is the protein responsible for transporting fatty acids in the brain

• The team found that the expression levels of FABPs in postmortem brain and blood cells of patients were altered. Using molecular analysis, the team identified specific mutations in FABP genes exclusively in patients, which caused an abnormal structure or function of these proteins, presumably preventing them from delivering the correct fatty acids to their target tissues and organelles inside cells.

FABP 7

STUDENT COMMENT

• Fatty acids are a very important element in the structure of the brain. Disorders in these molecules consequently cause alterations in the neurological aspects of patients. With further research and understanding of these mechanisms may identify abnormalities; that in every patient is different, and making a personalized intervention, for example using gene therapy.

MEDICAL UTILITY

MEDICAL UTILITY

• Understanding life at the molecular level, and to make interventions through it, provide a hopeful for the future treatment of diseases that are lethal or that significantly affect the biopsychosocial aspects of patients.

• Proteins play an important role in these studies because its variety of functions, allows use in many aspects of human biology.

MEDICAL UTILITY

Cancer has meant one of the deadliest diseases in the world. By studying certain proteins, mainly to suppress and block the cell cycle, there is a hopeful future for alternatives in the treatment and cure of fatal tumors such as glioblastoma.

MEDICAL UTILITY

Neurological and psychiatric disorders have a major impact on the psychosocial aspect of patients.

Understanding the relationship between certain metabolic disorders with schizophrenia and autism will allow direct therapeutic actions of these disorders, to improve the quality of life of patients from the perspective of molecular biology
