The Quirquincho and the Fox - AFolktale from ArgentinaAuthor Vidya ManiIllustrator Greystroke

Once upon a time a fox and a quirquincho (armadillo inQuechua the language spoken by the Incas whooriginally inhabited the land) were very good friendsThey spent a great deal of time together and had lots offun One day the quirquincho decided that he was not goingto waste his time doing nothing and instead decided todo a spot of farming He immediately set out to workand started to build a fence around a plot of land

2

His friend the fox was quite perplexed by thequirquinchorsquos behaviour He wondered why his bestfriend was working so hard instead of having some funin the sun Seeing the quirquincho toiling away at thefence the fox asked ldquoWhy are you making the fencebest friendrdquo

ldquoTo sow some crops and earn some money foxrdquo repliedthe quirquincho The fox was surprised by the answerHe started to suspect his best friend Why did thequirquincho want to make money

3

Was he trying to become richer and more famous thanhim Did he want to earn a good name from the otheranimals and get all the attention

Soon suspicions such as these got the better of the foxand he quickly made a cunning plan

Since he had more money than the quirquincho hedecided the best thing to do would be to join up with hisfriend invest in the crops make him toil and reap thebenefits himself

4

5

This way he wouldnrsquot have to work too hard but wouldstill end up making more money than the quirquinchoSo off he went to his sweating friend and said ldquoYoumust have used up all your money buying the land andputting up the fence Why donrsquot I give you the money tobuy the seeds to sow dear friend Of course if Irsquompaying for the seeds then I get to decide what part ofthe crop belongs to me Fair is fair after all isnrsquot itrdquo The quirquincho was a smart cookie too He immediatelysaw through the foxrsquos cunning plans But he also knewthat without the foxrsquos money there was no way hewould be able to grow any crops So he decided toagree for the moment ldquoThank you dear friend ndash what would I have donewithout you All my efforts would have come to nothingif not for a friend like yourdquo ldquoAh ha The silly foolrsquos falling for my planrdquo thought thefox gleefully ldquoOkay friend so yoursquoll do as I tell you toright

6

Then this first time whatever grows beneath the landwill belong to you and everything that grows above itwill belong to merdquo he said greedily For a moment thequirquincho was alarmed But then he said to himselfldquoIrsquom not going to let him get away with thishellip Irsquoll teachthat greedy pig a lessonrdquo

Bright and early the next morning the quirquinchostarted to prepare the field for sowing And guess whathe decided to sow POTATOES The fox was furious

7

When the crop was harvested all the potatoes went tothe quirquincho while all he got were the leaves Not tobe outdone easily the fox said ldquoThis crop has been verybad for me The next time you take what grows aboveand Irsquoll take everything that grows belowrdquo Again he feltgleeful for having outwitted his friendThe clever quirquincho set out to work again This timeround he tilled the land watered it and plantedhellipWHEAT Yet again when the crop was reaped all thewheat came to the quirquincho and the fox got only theroots and the leaves

8

Now the fox was really angry Each one of his attemptsto get the better of the quirquincho was proving to bedisastrous ldquoThat scoundrelrsquos really having his cake and eating ittoo Does he think Irsquom going to let him get away thiseasily My moneyrsquos being spent and hersquos the one gettingricherhellip I must teach him a lessonrdquo So he thought hardand long for a few days When he hit upon what he thought was a brilliant planhe called the quirquincho ldquoFriend the last two cropshave been no good for me Irsquove spent all my money butended up with just leaves and roots which have no valueSo itrsquos only fair that when you sow the next crop I getboth what grows above and below the ground You canhave everything that lies in betweenrdquo Accordingly the quirquincho got the field ready forsowing And what do you think he planted this timeCORN

The crafty fox had been outwitted again

9

10

When the crop was harvested the quirquincho took allthe corn that lay lsquoin betweenrsquo while the greedy fox wasleft with mere roots and stalks He got so angry with thequirquincho that he spat and fumed and swore never towork with him again

As for the intelligent quirquincho he now had enoughmoney to buy his own seeds and didnrsquot need the foxrsquoshelp ever again

Page 5: Folktale from Argentina The Quirquincho and the …...and he quickly made a cunning plan. Since he had more money than the quirquincho, he decided the best thing to do would be to
