Vinay Kumar In simple terms O&G / HC industry follows both whereas others (e.g Nuclear stream)

may not even have a look at API Cheers.

Anupindi Parthasarathy Sandip, it simple that API - American Petroleum Institute stds are for Oil &

Gas projects, where as ASME - American society of Mechanical Engineers stds are for Power(Thermal, Hydro, Nuclear, Solar, wind etc), Oil & Gas, Infrastructural and other engineering projects.

This std is most widely used along with BS, DIN, Indian Stds.

Robert James, PE This question is often raised. Most of the above is good. There are some

differences, particularly in materials and dimensions, and it is generally up to the owner to comply

with codes for its area and to specify what is required for its EPC project. Practicing engineers and

designers must determine and follow what is required for each project. Following are quotes from

    API's and ASME's own publications:

"...API has led the development of petroleum and petrochemical [Oil & Natural Gas]equipment and

operating standards. ...Many [standards and recommended practices] have been incorporated into

state and federal regulations; and increasingly, theyre also being adopted by the International

Organization for Standardization, a global federation of more than 100 standards groups."

"ASME is the leading international developer of codes and standards associated with the art, science, and practice of mechanical engineering. ...These offerings cover a breadth of topics,

including pressure technology, nuclear plants, elevators / escalators, construction, engineering

    design, standardization, and performance testing.

Kamal K. Gupta I am very sorry to say this, but no answer seems to be exact..

The ASME CODES section VIII DIV 1 which is most extensively used is for UNFIRED PRESSURE VESSELS

and we can safely conclude that ASME codes deal with designing pf PRESSURE VESSELS ONLY. We

have the design codes both for INTERNAL PRESSURE as well as EXTERNAL PRESSURE. The Heads of

such tanks are usually in the form of DISHED ENDS, design of which is also thoroughly covered in

these standards. The definition of a pressure vessel is also clearly specified in the code.

API standard mainly deals with the STORAGE TANKS for PETROLEUM INDUSTRY and deals with thedesigning of FIXED ROOF, FLOATING ROOF tanks. These tanks are non pressurised tanks. Generally

these tanks hold the contents at atmospheric pressure and only the liquid head is to be considered

    for Design of Shell.

    Hope it clarifies.
