CCMW Edmonton Chapter
On June 13 the Edmonton chapter of CCMW hosted an open
house featuring guest speaker Amerjeet Sohl who is the city
councillor The group had an enlightening discussion with My Soul
about community development civic engagement and his
experience getting involved in politics as a visible minority A film
that the chapter produced about supporting young Muslim women
to assume leadership roles was also screened at the event

The heads of two Canadian Muslim groups say they will be
watching carefully to see whether the gesture offered by Prime
Minister Stephen Harper at a Ramadan iftar on Monday will result
in a change in how the government talks about Muslims
Although US President Barack Obama and UK Prime Minister
David Cameron have hosted their own iftars for years Mondayrsquos
meal marked the first time Harper welcomed 40 members of the
Muslim community into 24 Sussex to break their Ramadan fasts
alongside members of his government While the event was billed
as aiming to honour the contributions of Muslim Canadians to the
country the leaders of two of the countryrsquos biggest Muslim groups
say the governmentrsquos track record of heated rhetoric makes them
uncertain as to whether it will lead to concrete change in how

Quebec is again taking steps aimed at barring public servants from
wearing face-covering religious garments at work and preventing
members of the public from covering their faces while receiving
government services
However Bill 62 ndash the neutrality bill tabled Wednesday in the
National Assembly ndash doesnt go as far as the previous Parti
Queacutebeacutecois governments efforts to ban all religious symbolsThe
province would accommodate those symbols under certain
