Bull riding is what many people cometo see at rodeos, but in Folsom muttonbusting is also a crowd-pleasing
vent.Every year brave 5- and 6-year-old
oys and girls grab a hold of the sheepsur and hang on for dear life. Like realowboys and cowgirls, a few hang on forfew seconds, while others fall off much
ooner than they anticipated.
Most participants think mutton bustingwill be easy and this year is no different.Andrew Dunbar, a 5-year-old El DoradoHills resident tipping the scales at 41ounds, is confident in his ability to bustmutton.Im going to hold on for 87 seconds,
Dunbar said. I think it will be easy. Imoing to hold on to the bottom. Its goingo be a lot of fun.
Dunbar saw mutton busting at theAuburn rodeo in May and is very excitedo take his turn on July 3. His family wento the Folsom rodeo last year for the firstime and enjoyed it.
I was very impressed, Dunbarsmom, Cheree, said. I liked the guy whoarachuted in with the American flag. The
kids look forward to it and have a great
time.Cheree said her son has been practic-
ing riding a barrel with carpet wrappedaround it at home in preparation for theactual contest.
He does a pretty good job of holdingon to it, but Im sure its probably a littleeasier than the actual thing, Cheree said.Hes really excited about it. Im keepingmy fingers crossed that he doesnt chick-en out and decide not to do it.
Dunbar will be dressed in chaps and avest when his mutton busting debutcomes. If he wins, hes already got his eyeon what he wants to buy with the prizemoney: a pool.
Folsoms Adam Crandall, a 5-year-oldweighing in at 49 pounds, is equally excit-ed about the competition. Hell be goingup against Dunbar, as both compete onJuly 3. Crandalls a bit more realistic thenDunbar.
I think it will be hard, Crandall said.Im going to hold on to his belly foreight seconds.
Unlike Dunbar, Crandall may have anadvantage in that he's been practicingwith a live sheep.
Ive been riding my brother around,Crandall said of his 8-year-old sibling,Jack. I don't ride CJ (his older brother)around because hes never on the ground.
Crandall will be decked outboy gear come game day. Whilthinks his son will be nervousmom, Beth, was quick to foldissenting opinion.

Leanos grew up in SanRafael, riding her horses onthe weekends, and over timedeveloping a passion toride. Leanos moved kick-ing and screaming with her
family to Orangevale whenshe was 15, but now refersto her town as a delightfullysmall piece of country sur-rounded by city. She recent-ly graduated from SierraCollege with an associatedegree in liberal arts.
Leanos will be at theFolsom rodeo on horsebackassisting with events in andout of the arena. Between
her duties, Leanos imaginesshe just might sign a few

The Dave Russell Band, a full-fledged Folsomfavorite, will return for the 48th annual FolsomPro Rodeo to ensure goers have a boot-scootin
ood time.
Were extremely excited, said Sally Howard ofhe Folsom Chamber Commerce. Hes a star in hiswn right. It cant get any better than the rodeo and
music from the Dave Russell Band. The band has established strong local ties because
f its frequent performances at the PowerHouse Pub,Concert in the Park and of course, the Folsom ProRodeo.
The fan base we have there is phenomenal, saidead singer Dave Russell. To be able to play there isn honor. Folsom has pretty much become my adopt-d town.
Russell isnt just some wannabe performer who
oned his skills at karaoke night. He was a two-timemale vocalist champion on Star Search. Hes beenprofessional vocalist since 1993. Hes played his
music from sea to shining sea. The band has 150ears of combined experience.
So when he plays at the 2008 rodeo, Russellxpects his expertise will help keep the party going.
I may never be one of the worlds greatestingers, he said. But when I get on stage, I want toe the worlds greatest performer.
The Dave Russell Band is billed as a country act,ut the group pulls out all the stops to make sureverybody goes home with a smile.
We hit it hard, we hit it fast, said Russell. Wewant to give them as much high energy, danceablemusic as possible. We will do Jimi Hendrix, Santana,Sweet Home Alabama - we play musically diversehows.
The Dave Russell Band will play all three nightsf the Folsom Pro Rodeo, July 3-5. The band willake the stage twice each night - 6-7 p.m. before theodeo begins and after the festivities until midnightt Mikes Golden Spike Saloon. For more informa-ion, visit folsomprorodeo.com.
