It is the only program of its kind offered at any of SUNY’s 30 community colleges. The FPT Associate in Applied Science (AAS) Degree is designed to put students on a path to immediate employment upon graduation, and also long-term career success as the region steadily increases job opportunities in the field (see reverse side). GCC has worked with local economic developers and leading institutions, such as Cornell University, to develop a curriculum that will provide this fast growing industry with trained, qualified workers. These employees will be able to immediately make significant contributions on the job. In return, they will secure good paying positions that provide a bright future with delicious benefits. One of GCC’s trademarks is cutting-edge technology across campus. This includes the recently updated Food Processing Technology lab with specialized equipment such as the ATP (Adenosine Tri Phosphate) swab unit that uses bioluminescence technology to assess bacteria levels. GCC also has more than 84 smart classrooms, 11 distance learning labs, 26 computer labs and the Alfred C. O’Connell Library for state-of-the-art Internet-based research. Other important aspects of GCC’s facilities include the Career Center, the Center for Academic Progress, a Child Care Center, the Veteran’s Lounge, and an exciting athletic program that rounds out the college experience. In addition, College Village offers apartment-style student housing at the Batavia Campus and the Student Union, the Roz Steiner Art Gallery, the Nature Trail and Genesee Center for the Arts provide an array of extra-curricular activities.

The Food Processing Technology degree program is completed in 63 credit hours, and many of the courses are offered online—giving students broad flexibility in arranging their academic schedules. The coursework includes a business internship in the final semester to be completed in a qualified setting. Greg SharpeInstructor of Food Processing TechnologyA native of Morrisville, NY, Greg grew up around the food industry with his father being a professor of food technology at SUNY Morrisville. He earned an AAS degree in Medical Lab Technology from SUNY Morrisville, and a BS degree in Medical Lab Technology with a dual major in Biology and minor in Chemistry

from SUNY Fredonia. Greg has worked in the Food Industry for over 20 years specializing in dehydration, alcoholic beverages, dry goods, and bakery products with an emphasis on food quality and safety. Greg has earned and continues to maintain numerous food related certifications, and he helped past employers earn “A” ratings in the BRC global standard audit for three consecutive years.
