2. Reports2.1 President’s Report Dear Fellow Members,

As I have stated in past reports the aim of Port Melbourne Football Club is to be the best and most successful football club in the Victorian Football League. Success in football clubs is measured in many ways, on-field success, financial sustainability, in both the short and long term, quality facilities for players, supporters and staff, continuing investment in the football department and facilities and the development of appropriate, affordable staff structures. Striking the right balance between these is, at times, difficult but your board places great emphasis on financial stability and improving facilities.

2016 has been a difficult year for our club with our major facility, the playing surface, being badly affected by heavy rain and becoming saturated and unsafe. As well as two home games having to be relocated with the subsequent loss of income, which is the subject of an insurance claim, on-ground training wasn’t permitted for a number of weeks with alternate venues having to be sought. This was very frustrating for all of us including our coaches, players, members and supporters.

When the full extent of the problems became apparent Port Phillip City Council, and their contractor City Wide, threw resources and money at the problem, carrying out remediation works that were recommended by the AFL turf consultant. Having 125 mm of rain in July and August didn’t help as most of the required works couldn’t be carried out until the ground dried out in the last week of August. The results of their efforts were apparent in September when, despite 59.6mm of rain falling in that period, the first three weeks of the final series were played at our ground, North Port Reserve. I thank Council for their response.

We have continued to discuss the vulnerability of the playing surface to heavy rainfall events with Port Phillip City Council and your board is seeking the reconstruction of the playing surface and Council appears to be receptive. Council staff have advised that they are proposing to submit a budget submission for the reconstruction works to be carried out in the summer of 2017.

In setting the 2015/16 budget your Board was prudent in its spending commitments and did not commit to spend on players, staff or equipment unless it had a reasonable expectation of income based on actual income from previous years. What the Board did not budget for was losing two home games and it was fortunate that attendances at finals games were higher helping to compensate for the two rescheduled games.

In a voluntary, community based organisation like Port Melbourne Football Club, spending and relying on hope or luck to fund the spending is a sure way to get into financial difficulties as many clubs in our competition over the years have found. We have been down that path before and nearly lost our club and this Board will not do that.

I report to you on our progress in achieving and maintaining our aim, an important part of which is staying ahead of the pack.

Club Achievements As a club our achievements in 2016 are:

In a difficult year our VFL and Development League teams played finals football and this due to the diligence and drive of our senior coach Gary Ayres Lee Rowe our Development League coach.

The turf practice wickets at the northern end of the ground have been removed and sand based turf laid.

Your club continued to invest in football with spending on players, coaching and support staff. We have just appointed Acceleration Melbourne to supervise and provide fitness services to our teams. Acceleration Melbourne replaces Rob Nicholson who left at the end of the 2016 season.

Sponsorship value taking into account cash and in-kind is at its highest level and your board thanks Platinum Sponsors, Fortburn Aviation Pty Ltd, Mischel and Co Accountants and Advisors and Beck Property Group. Your board would like to thank all of our sponsors who contribute to the success of our club. All of our sponsors are listed in this report.

North Port Reserve remains the ground of choice for finals football for the VFL and the VFL broadcaster Channel 7.

Development of a master plan for North Port Reserve that will guide the direction and development of the Reserve.

Longevity is also a measure of success and we can be very proud of the fact that our club has just completed its 142nd year.

Functions & Events

Revenue from match day takings has held up well and grown. The contribution from the kiosk operated by our Ladies Committee has played a significant part in this lift as has sale of merchandise.

Sponsorship has continued to grow but in a difficult and challenging market we are always on the lookout for more and any assistance or leads in this area are always appreciated.

The Rex has been refurbished in 2016 and its appearance and ambiance has improved markedly. The decline in revenue at the Rex is slowing and this is attributed in part to the refurbishment, ALH, the operators of the Rex are continually reviewing operations with our club with the view of increasing revenue.

The new Social and Administration building has provided some revenue this year and Peter Rowland Catering are operating the Sandridge Reception component under an income sharing agreement. Income from bookings made through our club have markedly exceeded budget. Under the tenancy agreement with

Council for this building we are required to provide for community use and we have exceeded the minimum requirement in 2016.

The Reception component is continuing to ramp up and we expect a stronger contribution to earnings in 2017.

Having Essendon, Geelong, Footscray and Collingwood play in finals lifted takings for the finals series games and helped off-set the revenue lost when two home games were relocated.

Fisherman’s Bend Urban Renewal AreaConstruction in the Fisherman’s Bend Urban Renewal Area has commenced with the old soap works on the eastern side of Ingles Street being cleared and construction of dwellings on the site nearing completion. Channel 9’s The Block, which was filmed in the Soap factories old administration building, provided publicity for our club and our sponsors. Your club will continue to contribute and make submissions to Government and Council when required.

RecognitionOur club could not survive without the continuing support of many people. I would like to thank:

Our players;

The senior coach Gary Ayres, Development League coach Lee Rowe and their assistant coaches for their commitment, teaching and leadership in 2016;

Dr Rob Nicholson and the fitness staff for ensuring that our players were fit and that their recovery well managed;

The training, medical and team support staff for ensuring that our players are well sustained and looked after;

The team managers and assistants and match day runners who ably support our coaches and players;

Joan Round, Margaret Addicoat and Di Perazzo work their hearts out in the kiosk at every game played at North Port for their continuing support. The way they operate the kiosk and deal with the customers does them great credit and I am not sure where the club would be financially without their efforts;

Thanks to Jenny Tserkezidis who produced a club calendar as a successful fund raiser;

Thank you to the merchandise group, Brendan Knight, Jenny Tserkezidis and Brad Mullen who open the merchandise booth at every home game and keep us in the red and the blue;

The Past Players and Officials Association and its committee ably led by Graham Clark and Gary Brice and the work they do to support our Club;

Our sponsors at all levels;

The match day support staff of time keepers, scorers, gate keepers, time clock operators, statisticians, cooks, waiters, master of ceremonies, ground announcers, bar staff and support people;

Nathan Strempel for his work in emceeing game day lunches and game day ground announcements ;

Our club patron Martin Foley MP and our ward councillor Bernadene Voss for their continuing support and advice;

Our number 1 ticket holder Bruce Mathieson and his company ALH for their support; and Anthony Traill, Kirsty Reidy and the Recreation Unit from Port Phillip City Council for their support and

advocacy of the club during 2016.

I would like to congratulate Cr Bernadine Voss on her re-election and subsequent reappointment as Mayor of Port Phillip City Council.

I would also like to thank Bruce Mathieson for his support through the Rex and his personal interest in the club.

I particularly thank and acknowledge our general manager Barry Kidd who has now over 20 years of service. It is very hard to appreciate what he does for our club unless you have actually witnessed it. Thank you just doesn’t seem enough. Without Barry’s work I can’t imagine what position our club would be in.

I would like to thank my Board colleagues, Andrew Nankervis, Brendan Knight, Warren Voss, Scott Ridout, Theo Kerlidis and Joshua Hayward. Your Board has a broad range of skills and knowledge that they bring to the management of your club. I also acknowledge Dominic Messino, who resigned a as director during the year due to work commitments.

Tributes While I extend my condolences to all members who have lost loved ones in 2016 and a number are included in this report.

I do want to pay particular tribute to our greatest player Frank Johnston who passed in 2016. Franks contribution to our club was great and includes:

J. J. Liston Trophy 1952 All-Australian 1953 and 1956 Port Melbourne premiership player 1953 Port Melbourne best and fairest 1951,52,54,55,56 Port Melbourne captain-coach 1956–57He went on to play for South Melbourne and was their best and fairest 1960. Frank was also inducted into the AFL Hall of Fame and is the only player in the Hall of Fame to have played most of his football in the VFA.

While he was a modest man who was devoted to his family, most of all he was a gentleman and a fine human being. I can say that I feel very privileged in having meet and getting to know Frank.

We look forward to the commencement of the 2017 season and seeing our teams returning as power houses in the competition.

Go Borough!

2.2 GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT 2016

The 2016 season was to prove a very challenging one more so than 2015. Due to poor ground conditions, two home games were transferred and training at North Port was not possible. This presented the club with a very difficult challenge for coaches, players, staff and the administration. The transfer of two games had a significant impact on our revenue stream. On the field we again experienced numerous injuries to key players but still managed to make the eight, only to go down to Sandringham in our only final’s appearance.

The new function facility, Sandridge Function & Events Centre, is slowly making progress and we should see an increase in patronage in 2017. In 2016 we have had to contend with Channel 9’s ‘The Block’ and the town housing that is being built on Ingles street thus eliminating most of the available parking. The Club has managed to support numerous groups including the City of Port Phillip, by providing the Function Centre at no cost or very little cost. This resulted in the club accumulating 442.25 hours of community usage from July 2015 to December 2016. This is a significant number of hours, which I believe no other club or organization can lay claim to. The wide range of groups and organizations appear on the Community Hours Program page.

In March we had the pleasure of hosting the ‘Love Me, Love You’ Charity walk, which supports people suffering with depression. The walk commenced in Portsea and finished at North Port Oval. Two ex-Port Melbourne players were instrumental in selecting North Port as the finish line, Lance Picioane (Founder) and Luke Livingston (Director). We look forward to hosting this event again on Sunday the 5th March 2017. All members are invited to attend what is a magnificent event for a very worthy cause.

I wish to advise all members that our gaming venue, The Rex, the life-blood of our Club, has been refurbished, serving meals and have commenced a royalties program that rewards Club Members. All you have to do is present your Port Melbourne FC membership ticket to join and commence your personal royalties program.

This year’s cover page highlights a photograph of Club Legend, Frank Johnson, who sadly passed away this year. The Club has introduced the Frank Johnson Tribute game to be played Round 11 in any given season.

The Frank Johnson Tribute Medal will be awarded to the Best Port Melbourne player on the day. We believe that this is a very fitting tribute to a great player and person, the most highly decorated player to ever represent the Port Melbourne Football Club. ‘Long Live the Legend’

The Club hosted four women’s games in the early part of the season when ground conditions were more favourable. The games were, the Australian Defence Forces versus VWFL combined team, Vic Country U22 versus Vic Metro U22, St Kilda Sharks versus Melbourne Uni and St Kilda Sharks versus the local team Port Melbourne Colts. Teams were most appreciative of the fact that they could play at a fully serviced facility such as North Port Oval, centrally located and with four change rooms. All games were very well attended and were a pleasure to host. We look forward to continuing to support the VWFL in 2017.

Congratulations are extended to Brody Mihocek on winning the Jack McFarlane Medal, Alex Urban on winning the Graeme Barfoot Medal and all other award winners.

The club again hosted the VFL Final Series and with four AFL standalone VFL teams (Collingwood, Essendon, Geelong and Footscray) in the finals and reasonable weather, we witnessed a fantastic final series over three weeks with 5,600 patrons attending the Essendon/Geelong game, 6,000 patrons attending the Footscray/Essendon game and 6,300 patrons attending the Collingwood/Footscray game.

The Channel 7 TV ratings (which appear later in the report) were nothing short of fantastic and again proved that the VFL is the place to be. Of all the states, the VFL (Ave.75,000 viewers) out rates South Australia (Ave. 28,000 viewers) and West Australia (Ave. 33,000 viewers) by more than 100%.

I am pleased to inform all members that the 2017 VFL Final Series will be played at North Port (subject to ground conditions) and hopefully one day we will see the return of the Grand Final.

The state game, Victoria versus West Australia, will be played in Melbourne and if history repeats, the game will be played at North Port Oval. The Club has an excellent track record in hosting State games and with the new Function facility, we’re in an excellent position to continue the tradition.

I wish to express my sincere thanks to the following groups;

The Coaching Staff lead by Gary Ayres and I thank you for your services. Brad Swain, Paul Griffiths, Ryan James, Trent Mc Micking and Peter Keenan ably supported Gary. Lee Rowe was in charge of the DVL team and Rick Waters, Jason Heffernan and Vinnie Turcinovich ably supported him.

To our medical and training staff of Dr Patrick Sunderland, Physiotherapists Nathan Schiodtz and James Dickinson, training staff of John Newson, Erica O’Donnell, Adriana Warwick, Meghan Keast, Ekin Ilgin, Colin Mifsud, Lisa Peplow, Laura Stacey, Taylor Bunting, Josh Freeman, Amanda Papaiccolaou, Henry ‘Pug’ Tucker, Andrew Tserkezidis, Danielle Perichon, Emma Stalenburg, Veronica Van De Kooi, Joshua Cilia and Tameika Hall-Harvey, I thank you for your professional approach to your duties.

To the Ladies Committee led by Joan Round and supported by Margaret Addicoat and Diane Perazzo, I thank you for another magnificent effort. As I have stated for many years, to have your voluntary services year in and year out is priceless.

To all support staff that are listed in the ‘Special Thanks’ section of this Annual Report I thank you for your outstanding contribution to the Port Melbourne Football Club.

To Platinum Sponsors; Fortburn, The Mischel Group, Beck Corporation and South Pacific Health Clubs, Support Sponsors and Player Sponsors, I wish to express this Club’s sincere thanks for your financial contribution in season 2016. A very special thanks to PROBUILD who provided the two portable toilet blocks for the VFL Final Series, replacing the brick toilet block that was demolished prior to the Final Series and is not going to be replaced. Hopefully the portables will be allowed to remain on site and further the Club’s cause in hosting the Final Series and other gala events.

To the Past Players’ Association led by Graham Clark (President) and Gary Brice (Secretary), I wish to sincerely thank you and your committee for your donation of $10,000.00. As always, it is very much appreciated.

To Nathan Strempel, MC, I thank you for assuming this role and making a valuable impact at the President’s Luncheons and the Presentation Night, a job very well done.

Special thanks to Sam Wharton (Media Manager) and Anthony Piccolo (Football Manager), two exceptional young men who have added so much to the fabric of the Club with their outstanding abilities and dedication to their roles.

As we approach the 2017 season it is pleasing to advise all members that Channel 7 will again televise the VFL Match of the Day. This will again present us with a challenge given the early starts however, in time the rewards will come given that the viewing audiences increased yet again, with a total of 2.023 million viewers for 2016. Port Melbourne games averaged 50,500 with a peak of 85,000. Our largest peak audience was the Sandringham finals game with 118,000 viewers.

To the Board of Directors led by President, Peter Bromley, I thank you for your service to the Club in 2016.

Finally, I wish to pay homage to a Club Legend, the late Frank Johnson senior. I had the pleasure of meeting Frank in Warrnambool in the early eighties when we were both travelling salesmen. You could not wish to meet a more sincere and humble man. To read Frank’s football achievements will leave you in awe.

2.3 SENIOR COACH’S ANNUAL REPORT 2016

Season 2016 could be best described as one of stabilization. After 37 departures in the off-season of 2015/16 we were able to regenerate and reinvigorate our list, and challenged once again for a Top 8 position.

Both our Senior and Development Teams were able to play finals, but we disappointed our supporters, the Club and ourselves with our performances on that day. What made the results even more disappointing, was that both sides had recorded good late season wins over our opposition.

The year was also not without issues that were outside our control. Due to the ground being deemed unfit for games and training in general for some 2 months, it challenged everybody associated with the club, and I would like to think that this should never happen again. Being a VFL Standalone team, in this current climate, we need consistency of routine with where we train; consistent availability of all our resources to compete against the AFL aligned clubs. We do not want to give them any advantages that are within our control.

Going forward into season 2017 we have been extremely delighted with our recruiting. We identified some specific holes in our list that needed attention, and as of putting together this report a ruck addition from Sandringham Zebras at a whopping 208cm by the name of Charlie Kelso has arrived at the Borough. Also Dylan Conway from Willy will give our forward half some much needed strike power, Dylan Atkins is a Key Defender at 197cm from the Dandenong Stingrays, Mitch Wooffindin has returned after a year away playing in the Eastern Football League, Aaron Wilson is a medium forward from Frankston and Yarran Jaffer-Williams who is a small forward from Casey.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank all the people who have supported me through 2016 especially Rob Nicholson who won’t be with us in 2017. Rob has been outstanding in putting together a Strength and Conditioning program over the last 6 years, it has seen us consistently match it against the ‘Fulltime” element in this competition. He brought a different philosophy to the club in 2010/11, and it brought an immediate surge in performance and Rob was instrumental in our successes over the last 6 years, especially the 2011 undefeated Premiership season.

We believe we have laid a platform in 2016 and our aim in 2017 is to finish Top 4.

And I would like to wish a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year to all our Borough Supporters.

Gary Ayres

2.4 2016 Development Squad Season Report:Season 2016 saw the Development squad start with losing our first four games.

With the addition of so many new players this wasn't ideal, but could have well been expected.

After Round 4 the team produced 10 wins & 2 losses; managing to secure a finals berth & finish 3rd on percentage which was a great result.

So many players were able to pressure for Senior selection on a weekly basis with many getting their opportunity.

With much hysteria surrounding the future of the Development League, I do believe that PMFC benefited from having the league in season 2016.

The tireless efforts of my 3 assistants and Head of Development Trent McMicking should be noted in what was a great season of Development football.

2.5 Port Melbourne Football Club Past Players and Officials Association

Annual Report 2016

This report is presented at the 2016 AGM of the mighty Port Melbourne Football Club. The Committee of Past Players and Officials have completed once again another busy season. Our committee as usual, has met regularly during the year. The Committee has conducted functions during the season in order to see as many former players and officials back at the Club.

We offered our members the opportunity of a special membership package again this year for $200 and the support we received for this was fantastic. We aim to increase the numbers of membership in this category next year. Season 2016 also included our normal membership deal to be a part of our association. Our paid up membership total this year was 87. We keep striving each year to reach the “100 plus” paid up membership target.

During our regular meetings in 2016 we have discussed and planned a number of activities for the season. As in previous years, it has always been the aim of the P.P & O. Committee to provide 2/3 functions per year for its members so that they can attend the Port Melbourne Football Club. The Committee is very aware that its members do have other commitments and are not available each week to attend the Club. However, by providing the members with the opportunity to attend any or all of the functions, we believe that it can only promote, add strength and continue the great history and tradition of our Club.

We conducted two major Premiership reunions during the season for players from our 1966 Team (8 players attended) and the players from the 1976 team (13 players attended). It was a privilege to have these players attend the function and walk back into our club as we celebrated two very special chapters of our VFA History. Next year it will be the 1977 Premiership Team that will be invited back to the Burra for the 40 year reunion of the 100th VFA Grand Final (which was a game where we beat Sandringham by 100 points).

A major initiative this year was to introduce a Welfare Fund for our members who may have some financial/medical stress. Our first two members to receive support were Sam O’Sullivan and Stephen Allender who have both experienced some extremely high medical expenses lately. We thank the current players, our members, club supporters and friends for their financial support and attendance at our special fundraising day that was held mid-season.

The 2015 innovation of the mentor program which was set up by Greg Ryan and Glenn Robertson continued again this season. This program linked a current player with a former player. One of the great advantages of this program was the number of former players that put up their hand to be involved. We were invited to attend the players meeting that was held during their pre-season training weekend at the club earlier in the year and we were able to meet our “2016 buddy”. This program gave the former players a wonderful opportunity to link the past with the current. This program will be reviewed to monitor its success/value. Let’s hope this program continues next year and moving on from what we all learnt from it, the program will hopefully only get better. A fantastic link.

During the season we were able to support the Club in a number of ways. One major area of financial support by our Association was once again by acknowledging the Club’s 2016 Best & Fairest winners. At the Club’s Presentation night, we were able to present awards for the Seniors which was $500 for first, $300 for second and two $200 awards (there was a tie) for third. We presented a $200 award this year to the B & F winner in the Development Team. We also supported the player’s end of season function with a donation of $1,000 as well. All up, that was $2400.

Our annual luncheon was held on Friday 2 September. Our special guest speaker this year was AFL Legend Mr Kevin Sheedy. The contribution from Kevin with his presentation made our function a most memorable one. Kevin was one of the first to arrive and last to leave. We had 144 guests attend the Social Club who all enjoyed Kevin’s input into the day. This day plays a major part in our fundraising efforts for the Club. It is the aim of our Committee to hold this

function again in 2017 with the date to be the Friday before the VFL Final series kicks off. Our luncheon this year was our 13th annual luncheon. It was fantastic to host this luncheon again in the new function room.

Season 2016 was no different to previous years for a standalone club that faces some big hurdles each season. However, under the leadership of Gary Ayres and his Coaching Staff, the players provided all of the supporters again with another season where we played in the finals. The enjoyment and pleasure that the team was still able to give to the all of our mighty supporters during the season is something very special. On behalf of our members, we extend our congratulations once again to Gary Ayres, his staff and all of the players on their achievements for season 2016. We know that next year is another year and we look forward to moving higher up the ladder where we belong with the addition of a number of new players who have already signed up for 2017.

The P.P. &O. Committee is now looking forward to season 2017. Our major aim once again is for our Committee to continue the drive to increase our membership and data base details. Season 2017 will see the P.P. &O. Committee maintain its strong links with the Club and strive to work as hard as we can to ensure the success of this great club. I would like to express my thanks on behalf of the Committee to Peter Bromley, Barry Kidd and the Board of Management who have supported our committee all year. It was with great pleasure that we were able to once again present a cheque to the club for $10,000 as a result of our fundraising during the year at the annual Presentation Night in October.

The Past Players and Officials Committee members for 2016 were: Gary Brice (Secretary), Frank Johnson (Treasurer), Peter Wilkinson, Bill Swan, Kevin Goss, Darren Freyer, Glenn Robertson, Jim Christou, Greg Ryan, Adrian Bonaddio and John Baird. I congratulate all of these members on their efforts this year and who have all worked so well together. It is called teamwork and mateship. We would like to think that we still have that after all of these years. However we might struggle with the preseason training session.

We all look forward to season 2017 with great interest and enthusiasm.

Go The Burra!

2.6 ADMINISTRATION AND DIGITAL MEDIA COORDINATOR REPORT

Unbelievably, another 12 months has sailed by, and it was hard to describe 2016 as anything other than another year of enjoyment for myself as part of my involvement with the mighty Port Melbourne Football Club.

The wet weather brought some logistical challenges for the entire club as we had two home games transferred from North Port Oval, but, as always, the support from our loyal fan base remained as strong as ever.

It was nice to be on the winning ledger of several tight contests this year, which saw us experience a taste of finals football; and that is obviously always enjoyable for anyone associated with the club in any kind of capacity.

I will continue to dedicate myself to working hard on contributing to all off-field aspects of the club, and utilising our digital media platforms to bring you, the fans, closer than ever to our great club.

If you haven’t already, be sure to come and introduce yourself to me at one of our games next year – inevitably, I’ll be the guy walking around the ground with his head in his phone updating the latest scores to our Twitter feed!

In more ways than one, we should look ahead to season 2017 with a fantastic sense of optimism and excitement about what lies ahead.

I would once again like to take this opportunity to thank General Manager Barry Kidd for all the support and guidance that he provides to me on a daily basis, as well as President Peter Bromley and the entire Board of Directors for their hard work and assistance throughout 2016.

I would also like to congratulate Head Coach Gary Ayres, his assistants and his playing list for the outstanding journey that they took us on this season, and wish them all the very best in the future.

Whatever that future holds, it is nothing but a privilege for me to come to work every day and play a small part in representing what is undoubtedly the best football club in Australia!

Go Borough!

2.7 Football Operations Report The 2016 season was a roller coaster one that ended in disappointing fashion against Sandringham in an Elimination final. However there were progressions both on and off the field throughout the year that will continue to drive the club into the future.

From a coaching point we welcomed Lee Rowe as Development Team Head Coach and Trent McMicking as Development Coach to critical roles in developing and fast tracking players to transition to senior football. During the recruiting period we were successful in bolstering our list with AFL experience and Borough fan favourite Sam Dwyer, Mitch Golby and Matt Arnot; VFL listed players including Sam Crocker, Josh Tynan, and 2016 Jack McFarlane Medallist Brody Mihocek and exciting TAC Cup prospects; Harvey Hooper, Daniel Beddison, Tom Hobbs, Jarrad Smith & Michael Wenn to name a few.

Our inability to defeat the top teams in the competition hampered our confidence against these teams and eventually put us outside the top 4 after the loss to Geelong in Round 21. 45 players were exposed to senior football including essential games into the younger brigade. Congratulations to individual achievements in Tom O’Sullivan, Khan Haretuku and Damian Mascitti on being selected in the VFL Team of the Year and Khan Haretuku and Brody Mihocek on representing the Big V against the SANFL. Mihocek capped an amazing year to claim the Jack McFarlane Medal after a strong and consistent year even though it did take him 3-4 weeks of training with us to finally convince him he will be making the right move in joining the Borough! Congratulations to Graeme Barfoot Medallist Alex Urban as he continues to develop and be ready to take the next step.

Thank you as always to the tireless efforts and time that the network of football support staff invest to ensure the players are serviced to the highest level. Your amazing support is greatly appreciated and keeps the football club beating. Thank you also extends to Heath Pritchard & Di Perazzo for your efforts putting on a meal on Wednesday nights for the players. This new initiative was welcomed and appreciated greatly by the players. The opportunity to build camaraderie off the field was also a big benefit whilst eating right after the main session. Due to the wet winter and conditions of North Port Oval, training arrangements proved to be difficult and again credit to the remarkable support staff and player’s ability to be unfazed and remain focused on the job.

Unfortunately at this time of the year we lose good people in departing players and staff who have invested into the club, all the best in the next step of your footy and life journey. I look forward to 2017 as the retention of our core squad and additions during the recruiting period will put us in a great position to contend once again.

The Port Melbourne Football Club is mourning the recent loss of arguably its greatest ever player, Francis Charles (Frank) Johnson.

Frank was a colossus of both the Port Melbourne Football Club and the VFA competition, who was an inspiring and defining figure for several generations.

His football career statistics are nothing short of remarkable.

South Warrnambool Football Club:

– Captain/Coach 1958/59

South Melbourne Football Club:

– Played from: 1960 – 1964– 64 Games

– 38 Goals– 1960 Best and Fairest winner– VFL Interstate RepresentativeIn 2007, Frank became the only VFL/VFA to ever be inducted into the Australian Rules Football League Hall of Fame.

Since 1990, Victorian players who have been deemed Best on Ground in the biennial VFL State Game have been awarded the ‘Frank Johnson Medal’.

Above all, Frank was one of the life’s true gentleman who was always remarkably humble, loving and often quick to try and downplay some of his momentous achievements in the game.

The club would formally like to pass on its sympathies to Rayleen, Kathie, Kerry, Frank Jnr and Greg, and the entire Johnson family at this time. May he Rest in Peace.

A legend of a footballer. A legend of a man. And legends live forever.
