Footprints? Why the Name?

St. Aidan, the man who our church is named

after, was a famous walker. In general people

walked a lot back then. Only important people

had enough money to buy horses. One ruler

gave St. Aidan a horse because he thought of

him as an important man deserving of a more

suitable transportation. St. Aidan gave the

horse to the next poor man he met. St. Aidan

wanted to walk because it was the humble way.

St. Aidan wanted to walk because that was the

way that he would meet new people and hear

their stories, their hopes and their concerns. It

was the place where he could have enough

time and space to talk about Jesus in an hon-

est, authentic and natural way.

This means a lot to us in this church. We are a

church that chooses the humble way, that

meets people along the road and shares a sto-

ry of Christ who is saving our lives each an eve-

ry day. This newsletter is the impression, or

footprints, left from our journey together.

“Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that

very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words.”

-Romans 8:26

I remember once when I was in high school. My heart was broken, my family was in turmoil, it

seemed like everything I knew was falling apart… you know, basic teenage stuff. Real or not this

crisis felt real for me and I didn’t know what to do. Truth be told I have had a lot of these times in

my life but this one stands out for me because I did something that was way out of character at the

time. I prayed.

I am sure people had taught me about prayer before, but I didn’t consciously remember any of it,

and I was way too embarrassed to ask, but somehow almost instinctually I started making a place

for prayer, and I mean that literally. I never spent time in my room except to sleep normally so that

seemed like the perfect spot. I remember I found this blanket, like the ones you would buy at a flee

market and I laid it on the floor. There wasn’t anything particularly prayerish about the blanket. It

didn’t have a cross on it or a bible verse but I laid it down so I would have a particular place to sit

while I would pray. It is funny because I still have

it and I call it my “prayer blanket.” It became ho-

ly not because of what it is but how I used it.

I also felt like I needed a candle. I found a jar

candle that my mother had but wasn’t using. It

was designed as a

prayer candle, and it

was the same kind

they used in church to

keep lit all the time

with the sacrament.

At first I would only

light it when I was

praying, but when the

days got harder I

would leave it burning at home, and while I was

at school when I would get anxious or when my

sprit was troubled I would remind myself that

the candle was still burning and I would feel

more connected. Almost like the candle was

praying for me and I knew it.

Often in the Bible when people come to a new

place they build and altar. They use the stuff that

is there but they dedicate a physical space to

God. This is an important practice. How do you

make a prayerful place for God in your life? Do

you have a space? Do you have a place on

your calendar eve-

ryday? These

things are im-

portant because

they change us in

ways we cannot

predict. Not only

did this space help

me cope with the

situation, it was also on that blanket, before that

candle that I first started feeling called to be a

priest. Our connection with God, and the guid-

ance we get from him are invaluable. They are

worth making room for.

My heart was broken, my family was in

turmoil, it seemed like everything I

knew was falling apart… you know,

basic teenage stuff.

Director of Youth and Family Ministries Confirmation is a sacramental act that we

celebrate every year whenever the Bishop

comes to visit. It is a time when youth and

adults alike reaffirm their Baptismal vows for

themselves. These past two years especially

have been meaningful to me as I know and

have stronger relationships with those being

confirmed. The part that always moves me

most is seeing the congregation come for-

ward and lay hands

while praying over

the confirmand.

This was also Mike’s

favorite part. He

says “It was a pro-

found experience

for me.” I especially

love seeing the

youth pray for and

over each other in

that way.

I was speaking with Grace Gabriel (confirmed

as a youth) who has been confirmed as well

as an adult (Mike Arnold) that was confirmed

last year about their own experiences in Con-

firmation. One thing they both talked about

was the desire to take on that commitment

and really feel for themselves a deeper rela-

tionship with God and the church. In prepa-

ration for her Confirmation, Grace talks about

truly enjoying learning more about the Epis-

copal church, why we do the things we do,

and learning more about what the different

parts and objects in the church are called,

their significance, and symbolism. It is always

wonderful to me to hear a youth express

such passion about the different parts of the

church and desire to learn more about such a

big part of their lives.

Looking back at their Confirmations, both ex-

pressed how much it affected their faith and

connecting in a stronger way with it. The way

Mike describes it is “Certainly it's important

as a public affir-

mation of faith,

but more im-

portantly it can

be a powerful

personal reaffir-

mation as well.”

I couldn’t agree

more.

We are begin-

ning our next

session of youth

Confirmation

classes in April. They will be April 2, 9, 23, and

30 from 11:30-12:45 including lunch. The

classes are aimed at the 6th-8th grade youth,

but high school youth wanting to be con-

firmed are certainly welcome. If you are an

adult looking to be confirmed, Les is always

willing to spend time with you talking about

Confirmation and answering any questions

you may have. Our service with Confirmation

will take place on August 27 at the 10:30 ser-

vice with Bishop Fisher. Please contact me if

you are interested in being confirmed.

Sunday School

We offer Sunday school for chil-

dren and youth at 9:30 a.m.,

ending at 10:10 a.m. The Gath-

ering (9:15-9:30 a.m. in Class-

room 2) takes place during the

15 minutes before children and

youth Sunday school begins. It

is a time for the 4 year olds- 3rd

graders to gather together, play

games together, and build rela-

tionships as they await the be-

ginning of Sunday school. We

are using a curriculum called

Believe. It is a continuation of

our previous curriculum, and

will focus on how to live Christ

centered lives.

Meet our New Vestry Members!

At St. Aidan’s Annual Meeting in January, Trey Pryor, Jenifer Hoffman and Dave

Lancaster were elected to serve on the Vestry as leaders of St. Aidan’s.

Dave Lancaster Dave is a native Texan, having been born in Dallas, the middle of three boys. He and his wife, Christine, have two sons of their own. He was raised as an Episcopa-lian, was an acolyte, and stayed active in the youth groups of the various church-es he and his family attended over the years. He graduated high school here in Houston, before heading off to The University of Texas at Austin (Hook ‘em!). Upon graduating from college, Dave headed off to Officer Candidate School in the United States Marine Corps, earning a commission as a second lieutenant, with subsequent training and assignments. Retiring following a 20-year career in the Marine Corps, he and his family moved “home” to Texas, where he joined the family business, Lancaster Wealth Management, as a partner. Dave and Christine have attended Episcopal, Presbyterian, and Lutheran churches throughout their moves, but after twelve moves in his lifetime, Dave feels he is ready to put down some church roots at Saint Aidan’s! He is active in the Cypress Running and Triathlon Clubs, and volunteers at the Lone Start Flight Museum. Dave has served on the Stewardship Committee and SALSA for the past two years, and is our new Junior Warden!

Jenifer Hoffman Jenifer is a native Houstonian where she was raised Catholic and received in the Episcopal Church at St. Christopher’s where she and Ken were married 25 years ago and their two daughters, Christina and Mary Caroline, were baptized. She obtained her Certified Shorthand Reporter’s Certification and was a free-lance shorthand reporter for many years, a pre-school teacher for six years, and is cur-rently an Insurance Agent/Owner with the Hoffman Insurance Agency. Family and friends are very important to Jenifer. She says that one of the best things about St. Aidan’s is “the people.” “We have met so many wonderful peo-ple at St. Aidan’s who have become our friends and our family.” Jenifer and her family began worshiping at St. Aidan’s when it was gathering at Lamkin Elementary. Their daughter, Christi-na, was married to their son-in-law, Chad, and their granddaughter, Brenleigh, was baptized at St. Aidan’s. Their daughter, Mary Caroline, was confirmed and Jenifer’s grandmother, Maebelle, was received at St. Ai-dan’s. Jenifer is a member of the Altar Guild, DOK, has served on the Stewardship Committee, taught Sun-day School, and volunteered with VBS. Jenifer answered the call to serve on Vestry because “St. Aidan’s is near and dear to my heart. It is exciting to see how far we have come, but even more exciting to see where we are headed. I am honored to be a part of it.” Next time you see Jenifer, stop and introduce yourself and get to know her!

Trey Pryor Trey is a retired military officer who moved to Cypress 7 years ago. He is employed by CFISD as a high school Air Force Junior ROTC instructor and is in his 8th year in that position. Trey and his family have been members of St Aidan's for 3 years. Trey is very involved at St. Aidan’s as an MC on Sundays and his family helped start the caregivers ministry which brings food to people in transition or trouble.
