ANZAC DAY CLASH

will be donated to Legacy Brisbane.

Great win for the Bombers!
Redland Football Club will play Aspley Football Club on 12th May 2018 at Graham Rd Aspley 2.00pm. Our jumpers have been specially designed by Shara Delaney.
Shara explains the meaning behind her design. Inspired by the colours of the Redland Football Club, this jumper is to be worn with pride to celebrate the 2018 Indigenous Round. It represents the Redlands which is apart of Quandamooka Country known to the traditional owners as the Moreton Bay Area.
For thousands of years Quandamooka has been home to our people. We will always continue to keep a connection to our home lands, passing knowledge and customs down to our younger generations.
There are three clan groups known as Nughi of Moorgumpin (now known as Moreton Island) and the Nunukul and Gorenpul of Minjerribah. The circle represent everybody coming together as reconciliation between teams and communities. The colours also represent the sand and sea.
All jumpers available for purchase now. Please contact Maree Thomson 0407 300 435. $100 each.

ZAMBRERO STAFF SHOW OFF THEIR SUPPORT FOR THE BOMBERS
THERE’S no doubting the commitment shown by Zambrero staff when it comes to supporting the
Redland Bombers.
Each Saturday the guys and gals from the Victoria
Point Mexican-inspired restaurant pull on the club
jumpers and when serving the many customers leave
no doubts as to where their allegiances lie.
Zambrero is a Gold Sponsor of the Bombers and
supplies after-match meals to the players.
The partnership began three years ago when former
rugby league star and Queensland Area Manager for
Zambrero, Shane Muspratt and partner Shaun
McCarthy opened the Victoria Point restaurant and
quickly aligned with the Bombers.
It was one way they both saw as becoming active within the local community.
Shane saw the fresh, healthy ingredients and nutritional benefits associated with the
Zambrero menu as influences that attracted him to the company in the first instance.
The Victoria Point business was named Zambrero Restaurant of the Year at the
company’s national conference in Sydney last year against a formidable field of 150 restaurants.

MILLSY AIMS TO FIGHT HIS WAY BACK
THE savage and humiliating loss to Canberra Demons was obviously going to have ramifications at the Redland selection table and key defender Stephen Mills took the brunt of that when he was omitted and will miss his first match since arriving from Perth last year.
Obviously disappointed by the decision, Mills says he will “fight back”.
No-one at the club saw last week’s performance coming. But just like last year when Canberra sent us scuttling back to Queensland after upsetting us in the opening round they’ve come out and repeated the process on our home territory – on a much larger scale.
Mills said he and every other player was embarrassed by the 83-point thumping.
“That type of effort is not what this club is about. “We didn’t show up and things just went from bad to worse. “We really dropped a lot of confidence in the second half.”
Mills, 23, says he will do all in his power to regain his place in the team. “It was pretty hard to defend last week when the ball kept getting pumped in and try as we might we couldn’t stem the bleeding. “There was only so much you could do.”
He will take his medicine playing with Western Magpies in the QAFL this week in the hope of quickly regaining his place.
Mills said he would learn from the defeat and expected his teammates would do the same.
“You hate putting in that sort of performance. We’ve all got to learn from it – quickly. “It’s terrible that we’ve let down our supporters, the volunteers and the sponsors and like I said, we didn’t show up.”
Before last week’s wreck, Mills had been among our most consistent players down back since joining the club last year from Perth where he played with South Fremantle and Perth Demons.
He was lured across the Nullabor by former Fremantle player Paul Hasleby and despite being hampered by ankle injuries played solid football in the west be-fore deciding it was time to return to Queensland.
He was originally from Rockhampton and before heading to Perth played with Southport as well as being in the Gold Coast Suns Academy.
He says both himself and the club “will learn” from the Canberra thumping. “It’s only round three and hopefully the club and myself will learn from it in the long run. “I was told about it on Anzac Day. “That sort of put everything in perspective. “I hadn’t lost any family members in those circumstances or any-thing like that. “It’s up to me now to fight my way back”.
While Mills will be plying his trade in the QAFL, the Bombers will be without skipper Hayden Bertoli-Simmonds with an ankle injury and Boyd Bailey (knee). Coming in to the team are James Barnes, Isaiah Edwards, Luke O’Sullivan, Ryan Dadds and Liam Dwyer.
We face another tough challenge this week against Northern Territory at Alice Springs and a big effort will be needed to turn the tide.
It’s a case of taking it on the chin – Millsy has – and putting in the required effort to institute a change. GO BOMBERS
GETTING ON TOP OF THE PEST PROBLEM
OSSIE Niksch and Hanlie Froes are wonderful people who take pride in their community, their surrounds, love meeting
people, are open to ideas and run their business professionally with a hefty dose of passion. But watch out! When it
comes to a pest problem they are not so nice – as we can readily detect from the name of their family company:
The Pest Bully.
The native South African couple – Ossie has been in Australia for 20 years, while Hanlie is coming up for her 10th –
make no bones about their intentions when it comes to controlling pests of any variety whether it be in the home, in a
retail outlet or an industrial environment. They detect the problem, map out a strategy and “kapow” it’s “bye bye pest” as the pesky villain and his friends became the latest vermin to be blasted by a bully.
Ossie and Hanlie have recently come aboard as a sponsor with Redland and as a testament to their community ideals
and involvement you’ll see them at every Scottsdale Park home match manning the club barbecue. “Ossie like cooking up a barbecue and we both love meeting people and getting to know the community we live in,” Hanlie said.
“Oh, and we’re going to get to know the game more, too.”
Ossie worked with a pest control franchise after arriving in Australia and it
didn’t take him long to realise there was a gap in the industry, particularly regarding quality of both the service and customer relations. As a result, The
Pest Bully was established in 2008 to provide professional pest control
services to the Redlands and South Eastern Queensland.
“When you deal with The Pest Bully you deal with the owners and technicians who have all been trained by Ossie, so in that way you get top of the range
service you would only expect from a small business operator,” Hanlie said. “Service and value are of the highest importance to us, so you can rest assured
that when you need help treating your pest problem, it will not be a problem for us.” The company’s vision is to be known for its high quality of service throughout the industry.
“Accountability, honesty and integrity – they drive us,” Hanlie said.
Ossie started in pest control in 2004 and quickly decided that to put his clients first he had to start his own business.
When The Pest Bully was born it was with Ossie’s ethos that: “Our clients become our friends.”
It goes without saying he enjoys cooking barbecues, but he’s also enthused by fishing and has a huge passion for cars. Hanlie’s background includes Event Management, Business Administration and Sales and Marketing. She has completed her pest control course and is totally committed to ensuring expert service and quality to The Pest Bully
customers.
Referring to her previous life – particularly in event management – she admitted it was a big jump “from glam to bugs”. “But I was pleasantly surprised by what I learned, particularly in terms of the technical side of things.”
She and Ossie have taken every step possible to “go the extra mile” in delivering pest control services to their clients.
“It’s our aim to maintain the utmost in quality service to place ourselves at the forefront of the pest control industry.”
And how did the name come about?
Well, Ossie wanted a name that was fun and instantly recognised.
That’s certainly been achieved.
Making it a complete family involvement the company’s logo was designed by his children.
As Ossie says: “We love our job, so will you.”
Benni’s special bond with Hammer-time Report: Jeff Stephenson
WHEN Matt Hammelmann slotted through his seventh goal against Northern Territory last week Cherie Wilkins and
her son Benjamin couldn’t contain the excitement as the “household erupted”.
That Matt went on to slam through another two goals in
Redland’s emphatic victory only added to the depth of the exhilaration.
Benni and Matt have established a strong bond over the
last few years and as far as Cherie is concerned they are
Footy Bros – a relationship that started when Matt played
with Brisbane Lions and has continued this year at
Redland Bombers.
“He’s a special bloke to us,” Cherie said of Matt.
Benni, a 10-year-old Belmont State School student (he
turns 11 at the end of next month) was diagnosed with
ADHD several years ago and his football links and
admiration for Matt have helped him as he travels life’s precarious road.
The journey so far has taken Benni to the Gabba every
week through the footy season and even to the MCG when
Matt made his debut against Richmond in 2016.
“Benni thought that was just amazing.” Cherie said.
“Brisbane Lions staff allowed us into the rooms after the game and Benni was given a football which Matt signed
and to this day it sits proudly on display in his bedroom.
“It’s a moment he will never forget.”
The journey has now extended to Scottsdale Park where
Cherie and Benni are readily identifiable with the “Hammertime flag” draped over the fence and the eager young fella excitedly clutching his “Matty Bear”.
This is a new bear too, with the Brisbane Lions one shelved into a well-earned retirement and the new Redlands
version proudly stepping out in support of the Bombers’ star forward.
We need to wind back a few years to learn the nitty-gritty of this special and genuine
footballing relationship. Cherie, a single mum, enrolled Benni in swimming classes
as an outlet for Benni’s condition.
He did well and continues to do so, but she figured it might be even better should he
become involved in a team environment.
As a Brisbane Lions supporter – she gave birth to Benni while the Lions were playing
Port Adelaide, so he already was a Lion cub from birth – Cherie enrolled him with
the Carindale Cougars in 2015 where he started Auskick and then joined the Under
8s.
It was during this time Matt was drafted to the Lions and when he came along to a
Cougars training night, Benni met the young footballer who was to become his
“brother”, idol and mentor. Matt, himself a Carindale Cougars junior player, made a profound impression on Cherie and Benni. So much so, she signed on as a player
sponsor that year and continued to support Matt in that fashion for the next two
years he played with the Lions.

“Benni’s football lasted one season with the Cougars – he’s more of a social butterfly – so it was back to the swimming we went,” Cherie said.
“But it launched the start of our football journey.
“The sponsorship was so Benni could support Matt on his Brisbane Lions journey and then we got to know the Hammelmann family, went to all the
home games and everything has grown from there.
“The two of them became Footy Bros and the Hammelmann’s have become our football family.”
Cherie says the bond between the two has given Benni renewed and
increasing confidence.
“He’s usually quite shy, but when he warms to people you can’t stop him from talking.”
As well as becoming quite recognisable at Brisbane home games, Benni
gained some notoriety of the nice kind last year when he was featured in the
AFL Record – when an image of him was
adjudged the Photo of the Week and then
was the winner of the Brisbane Lions
Member of the Round in Round 18.
Benni is also the proud owner of Matt’s first game jumper and the soon-to-be-owner of
the jumper Matt wore last week against the
Northern Territory.
“I know Benni can’t wait to hang this in his room as a reminder that you can do
anything if you believe in yourself.”Cherie has nothing but praise for Matt and his influence on her son. “Matt’s such a wonderfully inter-active person and he’s helped Benni a lot over the years.
“He’s still studying, he’s a great role-model and there’s not the slightest hint of controversy around him.
“His parents have raised a remarkable young man who is incredibly talented and who has a lot of support and
love from the local kids at the Carindale Cougars because he started off
just like them.
“We have everything crossed that Matt gets that second chance on an AFL list.
“In the meantime, we are proud of Matt’s achievements and are grateful we still have an opportunity to support his football journey at Redland
Bombers.
“I’d like to think Matt’s helping Benni create memories from which he can recall and act on when he starts taking his own kids along to the
footy.” It’s a wonderful bond, that’s for sure.
And with Matt leading the NEAFL goalkicking and playing inspired
football for the Bombers we reckon they’ll be plenty more times when the household erupts or the excitement at Scottsdale Park can barely be
contained.

The 2018 QFA is season is underway and the Sharks have certainly started the year well. The
Seniors got off to a great start beating last years Runners Up, the Reserves recorded their first win
of the season against Park Ridge after some close losses, and the Colts remain undefeated from
their 2 games. The club has blooded 8 teenage debutants in the Senior side, all of whom have
handled themselves well, in what looks like a fairly even Division 2 competition.

Our Round 1 fixture saw us take on last years
Division 2 Runners Up. In a close encounter,
we took the points to start the year in fine fashion.

VICTORIA POINT SHARKS JAFC Just wanted to express a huge shout out to our youth families, colts
and seniors for coming out in really strong numbers again to support
our 2nd session of Outside The Locker Room on Tuesday Night. Our
190 strong crowd was a great turnout. We were super proud of our
champion teenagers. They all did a brilliant job.
What a great session. Valuable education from OTLR on leadership
and culture. Thanks so much Corey and Ann for another awesome
night. You guys are amazing. Remember the leadership words that we
all came up with and live by these powerful words. Well done to the
entire club. We had the pleasure of presenting the OTLR Leadership
and Culture program to Victoria Point Sharks JAFC and their 190
participants. It was endearing to see the mix of U14–Seniors age
groups, parents and volunteers of the club immerse themselves deeply
in the program.
Interaction from the young leaders of today was quite insightful and
it is inspiring to see their minds working to identify their perception
of a leader and then identifying their own special leadership traits in
return.
Exercises on receiving feedback from peers positively for
self-improvement and the responsibility of being a leader produced
great results and some ‘out of the box’ ideas for future practice.

At the start of the session we went through
the Survey Feedback from the OTLR
Introductory session held earlier this
season. This data allowed us and the club
to identify areas in which the members
needed assistance. This is powerful
information to have as a club as it offers
an honest status of where the members
are at in their lives at this moment.
Subjects covered in this survey are:
general happiness (ranked), which areas (if any) they are struggling in, friends/family who are
struggling in life and where, members biggest life challenges, understanding of depression and
anxiety, recreational drug use and more.
Having this information allowed many conversations to open up about issues that have been or are
still plaguing members and the importance of communication. Learning to identify that yourself or
someone else is not ok and how to help is a life skill that every person should know. Feeling the
energy in the room last night, the high level of participation and seeing the strong leaders from
within the younger and older generations left us knowing that this club is going to have some fine
young men and women who will represent their community well.
Special thanks to Justin, John and Joy for your assistance last night and bringing the OTLR
program to your members. Thank you to all the
members – players, parents and volunteers for your
attention, interaction and passion.
We look forward to our next session with you all.
A very special thanks to our Sponsors Westpoint
Autos for helping us get to our important sessions
with comfort and reliability.
Westpoint Autos are very passionate about helping
our society and have partnered
with Outside The Locker Room in
support of educating and
supporting our communities.
