Fee for CBC use of music

P.R.O. Canada has scored a first for perfor-ming rights societies in Canada by successful-ly fighting a decision of the fee -settingfederally -appointed Copyright AppealBoard. The decision had to do with P.R.O.Canada's argument in 1984 that the CBC, apublic broadcaster should pay licence fees"more in line with the private sector." TheCopyright Appeal Board refused the proposi-tion to change the fee structure, but did ap-prove an increase of 5 percent over thepreceding year's tariff. P.R.O. Canada tooktheir argument to a higher court.

A judgement dated Jan. 7, 1986 from theFederal Court of Appeal has ordered theCopyright Appeal Board to reconsider their

1985 is vintage year withoutstanding WEA salesby Stan KulinPresident,WEA Music of Canada

The terms 'vintage', 'outstanding', etc. areover used in our industry, however, these arethe only words I can think of that adequatelydescribe WEA's performance in 1985.

Suffice it to say,we were delightedwith all aspects ofour operations - withan increase in salesof 40 percent over1984 and thebreakthrough of ourdomestic acts,Honeymoon Suite,Idle Eyes among themany highlights.

While I preferto leave it to others to determine who wasNumber One...all I can say is, all of us atWEA Music of Canada had a hell of a time in1985!

Thanks to everyone at radio, retail andthe media for helping to make it happen fromall of us in the WEA family as well as our ar-tists.

Stan Kulin

Ian Anderson, seen above (r) with DerryGrehan of Honeymoon Suite, dropped byto add a flute solo to the band's new WEALP, The Big Prize. The session is takingplace at Rupert Hine's Farmyard Studios.

up for reconsiderationdecision on the matter.

P.R.O. Canada's Nancy Gyokerespoints out that "during the years 1967 to1983 inclusive, the tariff structure with theCBC was based on a 'cents per capita' basis."She goes on to explain that "In 1983 it was2.8726 cents. In 1984 P.R.O. Canada soughtto change the basis for collecting licence feesto a percentage of the total expenditures in-curred by the CBC on an annual basis". Shepoints out that "Private broadcasters' feesare a percentage of gross."

P.R.O. Canada apparently attempted tohave the fee structure revised in both 1985and 1986. The request was declined which, ofcourse, has resulted in a judicial review.Hearings into the 1986 CBC tariff will beginin Hull, Quebec, in mid -February.

Says Jan Matejcek, President of P.R.O.Canada, "We see every reason that paymentsby the CBC for the use of music in televisionshould be equal to payments from the privatesector. The fact that the CBC is a public cor-poration is no reason for lower remunerationto copyright owners when their music isbroadcast by CBC television." He concludeswith "Is a song that is aired by CBC worthless than when it is broadcast by a private sta-tion? I think not."

Despite label lossesPolyGram tops past yearsby Peter ErdmannPresident,PolyGram, Canada

1985 was a remarkable year for PolyGramCanada. Having lost the license/distributionof Arista and Atticand later Virgin aswell, we still manag-ed to top thebusiness of thepreceding years.Tears For Fears andDire Straits alonereplaced the volumeof the departedlabels, with addi-tional filling provid-ed by the compactdisc and our classical catalogues. JohnCougar Mellencamp delivered his finestalbum to date, and Gino Vannelli had a ma-jor comeback in a year, which saw manyCanadians rise to international stardom.

Congratulations to Bryan Adams andCorey Hart for putting Canada back on themusical map, and our thanks to AlertRecords, Kim Mitchell (platinum plus) andThe Box.

Banzai, Canada's heaviest metal label, sold double platinum collectively.

And to crown the year, Tears For Fears'video album sold music videos throughrecord stores. Who would have believed thatthree months ago - we did - and gave therecord retailers an exclusive (no rentals).

1986 should be an equally exciting yearfor the music business. Double dare the air-waves in the months to come t!

own repertoire and that of third party sources under license and manufactures and

distributes via direct sales to major retail chain outlets and sub -distributors. This Divi-

sion also compiles a number of packages for marketing via direct mail, each phase of marketing supported by extensive television

and radio advertising. 4) The Company operates its own adver- tising agency to service the requirements of

the Special Products Division. In 1986, the Company plans to expand

its distribution operations through direct sales of selected product to video retail

outlets and groups that specialize in household catalogue marketing. This would

include the developing of album packages as premium incentives for selected clientele.

It is intended that we re -structure the Advertising Agency Division to service both

Special Products and regular Distribution plus outside clientele.

It is recognized that human resources are the Company's competitive edge and key to

future growth within the music industry. As we did not deem the renewal parameters

presented by Motown acceptable to Quality, a redefinition of personnel responsibilities

has been undertaken, including the possible merging of Marketing functions of the

Distribution and Special Products Divisions. In the spring of 1985, K -Tel Canada was

Set back in release of Idol's Whiplash

Whiplash Smile, the new album from Billy Idol, originally set for an early new year release, is not expected to be ready until

March. Keith Forsey, who also produced and played guitar on Idol's Rebel Yell, is produc-

ing the new set. Stephan Tennant, Chrysalis Product

Manager for MCA Canada, reports the new album is "a combination of ballads and

rockers." Tennant also reports that Rebel Yell, "has sold proportionately better in

Canada than any othe country". The album entered the RPM 100, (Nov. 26/83) peaking at

No. 13 (Sept. 29/84) after 44 weeks of chart action. The album gradually descended and finally left the chart at No. 80 (Apr. 6/85)

after a record 70 weeks. A North American tour by Idol is ex- pected this year, but no Canadian stops have

been confirmed at time of writing. "Whiplash Smile, isn't just a silly tough -

punk title," Idol says. It's a well -thought-out idea. "The Smile in the title is because I'm

happy and I want people to know it," he says. " The Whiplash is the way the music

strikes you. It doesn't hit you over the head, it drags you in." Idol is in a New York studio

working on the album, which is expected to be released in early April. "My last album,

Rebel Yell, was about me in the world," he said, "Whiplash Smile is a lot more

personal." Keep your ears open for these key tracks

cipals in K -Tel's early development in the pursuit of packaging concepts, chose, as a

result of K -Tel Canada's discontinuance, to move into the area of TV marketing and

distribution. In March of 1985, we began to assem-

ble the necessary personnel, drawing upon a number of experienced key personnel versed

in the field of Direct Mail and TV Marketing, with initial packages launching Quality's

Special Products Division in May of '85. To date, we have released a total of 24

packages, combined of packages received and developed by Quality, under the direction of

B. Wilock, the Division Vice President, and includes a number of packages on the R-Teck

label, owned and operated by R. Kives, former K -Tel executive, which is distributed

in Canada by Quality. Quality's entry into TV Marketing was

predicated on the need to be less dependent on short term licensing offset by intangible

product guarantees and provide a basis of selective repertoire options.

Keith Jollimore dies of cancer

The Canadian music industry was saddened at news of the death of Keith Jollimore, a

veteran in the music/recording business and former sax player for Lighthouse. Mr.

Jollimore died of lung cancer. He was 47. A native of Halifax, Mr. Jollimore was a

member of Lighthouse during their most suc- cessful years in the business. Besides playing

sax, he arranged music for the band, out of which came their most notable releases, One

Fine Morning, and Hats Off To The Stranger.

It was during 1983 when Lighhouse laun- ched a series of reunion concerts and Mr.

Jollimore was included in the lineup. It was at this time he learned he had lung cancer, and

even after the reunion series, he continued to work, moving back and forth from his home

in Halifax to Toronto whenever necessary. He was in Toronto when he died.

A memorial service was held for Mr. Jollimore at the Toronto Musicians Associa-

tion Hall (Jan. 14). Mr. Jollimore is survived by his wife Carole, daughter Cindy, and sons Robin, Chris, Shawn and Todd.

One of the nice gestures of last year by Gowan was his honouring FM 96 London (Music Director Greg Simpson accepting)

with a framed lithograph of his Strange Animal album.

RPM goes to MIDEM!!!There's a lot of excitement around RPM's of-fices because next week's issue goes to Can-nes - and then it goes all over the world. Tothose who are going to MIDEM, yourmessage gets a double whammy! To thosewho won't be there, your message gets intothe hands of some of the most important peo-ple in the "biz", many of whom will be inCannes for MIDEM. (EC: Rubbingshoulders with the rich and famous!!)

Bryan Adams could win a Grammy!Well, I can just see the team of GL and JSwhooping it up over the Grammy nomina-tions for Bryan Adams. He has beennominated for 2 of the coveted awards: forRecord of The Year, and Album of The Year.Another Canadian who should shine at thisyear's 28th annual awards presentation isDavid Foster, who was nominated in 6categories. The awards will be televised onCBS -TV (Feb. 25).

Donald continues to outshine allhis peers with his constant array of top pro-ductions that not only tour across Canada, but also has a tight hold on Broadway withTango Argentino. Now, he is presenting Tor-vill & Dean - The World Tour - to Canadianaudiences. Report to CRTC onFrench -language musicThe Consultative Committee on French-language music has submitted its report to theCRTC's Chairman, Andrea Bureau. Thecommittee was established by the CRTCunder the co -chairmanship of Messrs, DenysBergeron and Jean Jean-Pierre Coallier andwas comprised of representatives from thebroadcasting and recording industries, per-former and composer associations, plusmembers from different levels of govern-ment.

The Committee was formed in view ofthe CRTC's concern over the many requeststhey had been receiving from broadcastersasking for a reduction of the 65 percent re-quirement to broadcast French -languagevocal music. It should be noted that this re-quirement still applies and will apply until theCommission decides otherwise. The commit-tee has apparently made close to 40 recom-mendations concerning the problems ofbroadcasters and the availability of fran-cophone music product. The committee alsoadvanced proposals to "ensure the improvedmarketing of French -language vocal musicproducts, better scheduling, and othermeasures to encourage the promotion ofFrench -language vocal music."

It's expected that the broadcasters willbe submitting another report the first of theyear, which will be included in the workingpaper entitled Politique de la chanson et de lamusique populaire, which has recently beendistributed to interested groups by theQuebec Ministry of Cultural Affairs.

Some artists should stay private!!I can understand why some recording artistswould like to forget interviews they did andwould prefer to become very private people. Iheard one interview of a rock giant on CBCStereo's The Entertainers - and it was adisaster. I felt sorry for him, which is whyI'm not going to mention his name. He hadnothing to say. It was agonizing.

Good work deserves credit!!CBS published The New Year Times datedJanuary, 1986 and it was absolutely free toradio programmers and the retail trade. Iwish they had printed credits. This was awork of excitment - big, black and clearheadlines and meaty pieces about their topand breaking acts. Maybe we could hire acouple of their writers!!!

he has become a force to reckon with interna- tionally. Truly an entreprenaur. D.J.S. Music Service celebrates 10

Mike Stetch and Margo Fraser of Calgary's D.J.S. are currently celebrating 10 years of

serving the industry. A nice gesture by Mike and Margo was the presentation of a

beautiful Thank You plaque to RPM for giv- ing them recognition over the years. La Maison d'Azur revisited!!

After only mentioning this fine Riviera -style restaurant in last week's column, there has

already been a mass of music industry types who have not only enjoyed dinner there, but have called me to echo my words as to what a fine restaurant it is and how much they en-

joyed it.

Some artists should stay private!! I can understand why some recording artists

would like to forget interviews they did and would prefer to become very private people. I heard one interview of a rock giant on CBC

Stereo's The Entertainers - and it was a

disaster. I felt sorry for him, which is why I'm not going to mention his name. He had

nothing to say. It was agonizing.

Good work deserves credit!! CBS published The New Year Times dated

January, 1986 and it was absolutely free to radio programmers and the retail trade. I wish they had printed credits. This was a work of excitment

- big, black and clear headlines and meaty pieces about their top

and breaking acts. Maybe we could hire a couple of their writers!!!

. . . and the CDs keep rolling!

I'm waiting for CRIA's sales figures of com- pact discs for December with bated breath.

You'll remember I reported that the month of September showed 150,816 CD units sold

having a dollar value of $2,007,784 and Oc- tober showed an increase in units sold with a figure of 179,427 and that dollar value was

$2,358,835. Well, the November figures showed units sold as 230,186 with a whopp-

ing big dollar value of $3,052,258. Year to date units sold for November totalled

1,143,116. The dollar value, year to date for September was $9,939,739 and just look at

November's dollar value - $15,350,832 (EC: And you don't even have a CD player!!)

He continues with "There's not as muchvariety in music today. We're not hearing a

COVER STORY

It's been a hard year for metal - Helix's Vollmer

With many FM rock stations taking aim at the over 25 age group, which represents the

largest segment of listeners, Helix lead vocalist Brian Vollmer admits that hard rock

and heavy metal have had a difficult time lately. Capitol's recording act Helix com- pleted their most extensive tour, which was in

support of their third and most recent album, Long Way To Heaven. The Tom Treumuth-

produced album which shipped gold, includes the single The Kids Are All Shakin'.

"It's been a hard year for metal com- pared to 1 or 2 years ago," says Vollmer. "Kids can't hear the record on radio so

they're checking out magazines for it. I think there's been a lot of faceless music around

and kids want to rock." He continues with "There's not as much variety in music today. We're not hearing a

Abram's Doors radio special set to air in July

In conjunction with the 15th anniversary of Jim Morrison's death, Lee Abrams, a U.S. entertainment consultant and Denny

Somach, radio producer, have combined their talents with the remaining members of The Doors to assemble a radio special on the

group. The show is scheduled to air July '86 The documentary will feature old radio

clips as well as old newscasts, DJ's from the late 60's promoting Doors concerts and

advertisements from the 1960's. Interviews will encompass a broad spec-

trum of people including talks with group members as well as promoters, club owners, bouncers and others touched in some way by

The Doors. The production, in cooperation with

Manzerek, Densmore and Kreiger will mark the first time a group has been involved in the

making of their own special. At present, Abrams and Somach are talking with potential corporate sponsors, which include radio networks and syn-

dicators.

Debut LP released by Fine Young Cannibals

IRS's Fine Young Cannibals have recently released their debut self -titled album. The 3 member outfit comprises David Steele and

Andy Cox, both former members of English Beat, as well as new member vocalist/lyricist

Roland Gift. The LP contains their current European

hits Johnny Come Home and Blue. Paul Orescan, IRS Label Manager, informs RPM

that Johnny will be the first domestic single and has a scheduled release date of January 27. The video is in rotation at MuchMusic.

Producing the set were Bob Sargeant, who has worked with Steele and Cox on their

previous Beat albums and Robin Millar who completed Sade's Diamond Life. Working

with the trio were Martin Parry (drums) and Graeme Hamilton on the trumpet.

lot of guitar - and that's what rock is all about. There's only a few like Dire Straits

and Bryan Adams." Vollmer is confident however, that the

softening of FM rock radio is only temporary and that there will be a swing back to more

adventurous programming. But with so much competition from other hard rock bands,

does Helix worry about getting lost in the shuffle? "I don't think so," said Vollmer. "The cream will rise to the top. If it's a good song,

it doesn't matter who you are. Kids search out the material."

Vollmer credited stations like Hamilton's CKOC and Q107 in Toronto for

helping to establish Helix. He noted that the band stayed away from the clubs for 2 years

whereas some groups overexpose themselves. Vollmer pointed out that although it was

difficult at the radio level in the early years because Helix was on an independent label,

they were helped out by some programmers because they were the underdog at the time.

Helix is already writing new material for their next album and are planning on entering

the studio in the spring with Treumuth again as their producer.

Le Mobile recording unit set for Joe Jackson date The independently -owned Le Mobile recor- ding studio/truck, originally based in Mon-

treal, will be in New York City (Jan. 23 to 25) recording Joe Jackson's new album, a live

set.

The A&M artist will record his 8th album, tentatively titled Big World, live to

2 -track master at the Roundabout Theatre, with longtime associate David Kirschenbaum

producing.

Jackson and his band: guitarist Vinnie Zummo, drummer Gary Burke (who played

with Bob Dylan on his Rolling Thunder Revue), and bassist Rick Ford are cur-

rently playing dates in New York. They have been described as "very tight with fresh

material that is exceptional". The new LP will feature only new material.

Big World marks the return to recording for Jackson after a 2-yr. absence. He recently co -produced The Zummo's (Zummo and

wife Janice) new album, Modern Marriage, set for a February release. As well, he appears on the soundtrack of the new John Hughes'

film, Pretty In Pink, where the celebrated keyboardist backs Suzanne Vega. A Jan. 24th

release date has been set for the soundtrack.

A&M isi looking forward to a healthy & heavy 1986

by Randy Wells National Promotion Manager,

A&M Records, Canada

Falco 3 is' high on our list of album releases. The current single, Rock Me Amadeus is ex-

ploding at radio and retail. Now nearing platinum, a lot of people have been taken by

surprise at the ins- tant response. The

clubs set the pace and started the buzz and CHR airplay has

grown steadily with excellent chart

numbers at all ma- jors.

Support for the video has been

massive and retail has shown an ama-

zing feel for the street. All in all things look very positive as we are preparing for the

release of Vienna Calling - the next explosive

single. OMD's single Secret has stood the test of

time. The single has received a great deal of attention at radio and chart numbers are just

starting to come in, with the likes of CHUM (28), CFTR (38) and CKOC (34). The collec- tive action from the airplay, chart numbers and retail makes OMD primed for 1986.

Another hot item is the new Simple Minds single, Sanctify Yourself, from the double platinum album Once Upon A Time.

The new single is "kicking" in and taking up where Alive And Kicking left off. Support on

this act has been nothing short of spectacular

Randy Wells

from all avenues. Once Upon A Time is truly a classic LP.

Two other single releases that fit into our current priorities are Sting's Russians and

The Arrows Heart Of The City -

both of which are enjoying out -of -the -box radio sup- port.

For the remainder of January, for- thcoming releases include Jimmy Nail's Love

Don't Live Here Anymore, Atlantic Starr's Secret Lovers, Feargal Sharkey's A Good Heart and introducing Stan Meisner's One

Chance. Through Attic Records comes RAS

Records, a reggae line including Gregory Issacs, Peter Broggs and Freddie MacGregor.

Concord Jazz also has new releases, in- cluding George Hearing, Mel Termaine and

The Ray Brown All -Stars. Other album releases include Marti

Jones Unsophisticated Time, James Young City Slicker, the OST Pretty In Pink and

Feargal Sharkey's self -titled LP. The Pretty In Pink soundtrack includes various tracks from OMD, INXS,

Pyschedelic Furs, Suzanne Vega and The New Order.

With the great success Anaheim Steamroller we anticipate the release of the remainder of the (U.S. Gramaphone) catologue. Also a special release from the renowned Dr. T. Verney. TV's Greatest Hits is a pleasant surprise

for us, receiving great acceptance at radio and retail alike. There is a possibility of com- ing with a video in support of this album.

A&M is looking forward to a very healthy and heavy new year.

d ;IvaTracey & Willie togetherOne of the most powerful tracks on the Fami-ly Brown's new self -titled album is a TraceyBrown and Willie Nelson duet of Wouldn'tYou Love Us Together Again. This should bethe next single. Several programmers arealready carting the track off the album. However, because there's another label in-volved, there is some difficulty in releasingthis track as a single. Too bad.

Simpson characterizes Magnum P.I.Kevin Simpson, who heads up his own Ebonylabel (Kingston, Ont.) takes a light-heartedlook at one of TV's popular private in-vestigators with his Magnum P.I. release.Kevin wrote this amusing take -off ofMagnum which has been released in Canada, the U.S., U.K., and Australia. This is afollow-up to Let's Not Be Strangers, whichwas a good door opener for Kevin. The flip, IWish, is a duet with Kevin and Venessa JeanMoulton with the latter taking writer credits. This side is on a more serious note. Both sideswere produced by Rich Dodson at his24 -track Marigold Studio in Toronto.

Eikhard does it both waysShirley Eikhard's new single, It'sUnderstood, should get good exposure atboth country and A/C formated stations. The single, released on her own Eika label(Toronto) was produced by her and RandyKumano. She also wrote the song, andharnessed the talent of Louise Hazel! totranslate the lyrics into French, which comes

111,111.1 AW Tracey & Willie together

One of the most powerful tracks on the Fami- ly Brown's new self -titled album is a Tracey

Brown and Willie Nelson duet of Wouldn't You Love Us Together Again. This should be the next single. Several programmers are

already carting the track off the album. However, because there's another label in-

volved, there is some difficulty in releasing this track as a single. Too bad.

Simpson characterizes Magnum P.I. Kevin Simpson, who heads up his own Ebony label (Kingston, Ont.) takes a light-hearted look at one of TV's popular private in-

vestigators with his Magnum P.I. release. Kevin wrote this amusing take -off of

Magnum which has been released in Canada, the U.S., U.K., and Australia. This is a

follow-up to Let's Not Be Strangers, which was a good door opener for Kevin. The flip, I

Wish, is a duet with Kevin and Venessa Jean Moulton with the latter taking writer credits.

This side is on a more serious note. Both sides were produced by Rich Dodson at his

24 -track Marigold Studio in Toronto. Eikhard does it both ways

Shirley Eikhard's new single, It's Understood, should get good exposure at

both country and A/C formated stations. The single, released on her own Eika label

(Toronto) was produced by her and Randy Kumano. She also wrote the song, and harnessed the talent of Louise Hazell to translate the lyrics into French, which comes

out as C'est entendu. I think Shirley is one of the few English -language recording artists,

outside of Bruce Cockburn, who has made an attempt to culture the Quebec market.

A message from the Diamond Bros. The Diamond Brothers have released Woman

With The Black Heart Of Stone, on their own Diamond label, which is based in Salmo,

B.C. Writes John Diamond, "We're just a struggling little band in a struggling little min-

ing town, deep in the middle of the Kootenay Mountains in Southeastern B.C., and we've

been trying very hard to climb up over the top to be able to sing to the rest of the world."

Well, they haven't done a bad job with this single, which was written by John Blizzard

and produced at the Offerman Music Studio. The band depends on their music to make

them a living and have become quite popular on the bar and hotel circuit, particularly at the Royal Inn in Nelson where owner Cyril

LeBlanc has given the group a helping hand. The flip, I Got The Blues, is also a Blizzard

original. There's no MAPL logo but it would appear both sides qualify as 4 -parts Cancon.

Tim and Anita on a roll Tailspin recording artists Anita Perras and

Tim Taylor have just come down off a 3 -month tour schedule, the busiest in their

career. The Duo of The Year, a category they won at the Canadian Country Music Awards, were signed to Brian Ferriman's Supervision

management firm last October. Anita and Tim taped their own 1 -hr. TV special for the Mid -Canada TV network which was titled

Home For Christmas. The special guested Terry Carisse and Johnny Burke. While at home Anita was honoured with her own Anita

Hall's Ski Council theme given boost with P.A.'s

The Gift, Albert Hall's latest Quality single, is the official song for the Canadian Ski

Council. Hall, who wrote the song, is Na- tional Celebrity Spokesperson for the coun-

cil. He also produced and wrote the public service announcement for radio and televi-

ed advantage to promote his single through dates that will take him across Canada. He

kicked of the tour with a personal appearance and autograph session at Woodside Mall,

Scarborough (Jan. 18), which was followed by the Celebrity Cross Country Race at Great

Toronto Ski Day -

Metro Toronto Zoo (19). The following evening (20) he is featured

entertainer at Toronto's Copa for Ski Copa. Hall then heads west to ski country and a

media tour of Calgary (21 & 22) and Edmon- ton (23). He is in Vancouver (24) as guest on

CBC Downtown Saturday Night, followed by an appearance on Harold Kendall's CKWX

show, and then a personal appearance and photograph session at Crystal Bowl Ski

Resort. The capper for the promotion tour will

be at Whistler Village (25 & 26) where he will team with Nancy Greene at her Olympic

Lodge. It's expected that this promotion tour

will give Hall the outside edge for a follow-up concert tour later on this year.

single, Two Hearts In A Lonely State Of Mind, was written by Rory Bourke and Jeff Tweel, and produced by MBS in Canada. The single carries a 2 -part MAPL logo (AP). The

flip, A Place In The Shade, was released as a single a few months ago and enjoyed a brief

run up the RPM Country 60. Jules is also be- ing promoted by Callahan Promotions of

Toronto, who made a special effort to ensure that television viewers new of Jules' ap-

is being readied by RCA for release. The single was taken from Godard's album Have

I Got News For You, and is the follow-up to We Won't Ever Say Goodbye, which peaked on the RPM Country 60 at No. 7 (Oct. 12/85)

after a run of 15 weeks. A video of the new single will also be released.

Extensive tour readied forThe Carlton Showband, one of the mosttravelled bands in Canada, are currently inToronto's Safor Rehearsal Studios preparinga new show, one they'll take on the road star-ting January 25 and running until May 2.

11 lila-1111Remembering a friendNew Years Day, 1986

Today, I'm supposed to be sitting in front ofmy TV watching all the Bowl Games, suffer-ing from last night's craziness.

Instead, I'm listening to a cassette, recorded March 6, 1980 and suffering fromthe news on last night's TV.

I first met Rick Nelson, March 6, 1980and had the pleasure of working with him un-til 1982.

Even though I had just met him, I knewhim all my life, as most of us had, through"Ozzie & Harriet."

We got acquainted backstage at Win-nipeg's Centennial Theatre, then proceded togo to the stage to do a sound check. I askedhim if he was still doing There'll Never BeAnyone Else But You in his show. He said hehadn't done that song in years and asked me"was it a big song in Canada?" I replied thatit was one of his biggest hits here, so hethought it would be a good idea to do it.

He had to rehearse it, had troubleremembering the lyrics, but my friend Jimand I sat in the front row coaching him. When he performed it that night to a sell-outhouse, it was met with the biggest ovation.

After the concert, we then went to dinnerat Winnipeg's best Japanese restaurant, IchiBan. Over the course of the evening we con-sumed several sakes (the only alcoholicbeverage he drank) and got into a bignostalgia night, with talk ranging from Elvis(who idolized Rick and vice versa) as well asthe early days on television.

"Do you know what my father did for aliving?" he asked. I replied he was a bandleader. "No, dad was a lawyer and abandleader, each night at home after a day inthe law office, he would write the script fornext week's show.

We talked about his wife Kris, and theirchildren. They had just bought theMulholland Ranch which was the old homeof Errol Flynn and Kris was still unpackingthings.

We finished our meal, then went back toour respective hotel rooms, saying we'll seeeach other for breakfast in the morning thengo to the airport so he could board his privateplane to fly to his next engagement.

Years ago, a friend of mine with RCAhad just finished working with Jim Croce.Croce died the next week in a plane crash. Iwondered what it would be like to lose so-meone you had grown up with, to go sudden-ly and fiery as Jim Croce did.

New Year's Day 1986. I now know.

Edmonton's K-97 releases new Homegrown album

K-97, who bill themselves as "The Spirit Of Edmonton", gives a boost to Cancon with

the release of their Homegrown '85 album, compiled from entrants to the station's

Homegrown competition. The competition was open to all Alberta acts that do not have

a recording contract. Ted Kennedy, K-97 Music Director,

reports that the voting was done by a panel of 40 K-97 listeners. The winning act was Guar-

dian. Second and third place winners were Neo A4 and Wilfred N & The Grown Men

respectively. Kennedy also pointed out that this year's

competition attracted 104 entries from all over the province with music spanning the

complete spectrum of rock and roll. The station promotion has already at-

tracted interest from the majors with Mark Korven being picked up for release by RCA.

Pete Mann & The Lonely placed second in the CBC Rock Wars competition. Both acts were

featured on last year's Homegrown album. Says Kennedy, "We expect continued success

for this year's winners."
