SUMMER CoURSES for ADUlTS PAinTing & DRAWingintroduction to DrawingThe first step in learning how to draw is learning to see. Discover how you can sharpen your powers of observation and improve your drawing skills. Individual coaching from artist Cong Yuan gives you confidence as he guides you through the use of basic design principles. As you progress, class discussions about composition and perspective will help you to develop your own projects. Learn to skillfully use of drawing materials such as pencils, charcoal and conte cray-ons. Mr. Yuan also includes a special ses-sion on Chinese brush painting. Check the DAC website or call for materials list.

06sU101.1Mondays, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PMJune 19 - August 7 (8 weeks)Cong Yuan, Instructor$124 or two credit card payments of $62

Figure DrawingDraw figures with character! Artist Cong Yuan places each model in an evocative context using furniture, drapery, props and lighting. He’ll explain how the structure of bones and muscles gives individuality and expression to each subject. As you gain confidence with your figure drawing skills, you’ll learn how composition can add depth and interest to your drawings. Basic drawing skills are a prerequisite for this course. Check website or call for materials list.

06sU102.1Wednesdays, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PMJune 21 - August 9 (8 weeks)Cong Yuan, Instructor$124 or two credit card payments of $62

Simple Portrait Painting and head Studies in oilWorking on small canvases with limited colors, we will work out the light and dark relationships of the head before adding more vibrant colors to the light and shadows. Beginning simply will allow us to de-mystify the complicated form of the head before moving into the more complicated areas. Along the way we will discuss composition, touch on simple drawing tips to capture a likeness and explore some basic color theory. Materials will be kept to a minimum. All are welcome. Some painting experience required.

06sU122.1Saturdays, 9:30 AM - 12:30 PMJune 24 - August 19 (8 weeks)No Class July 8Tracy Hancock, Instructor$124 or two credit card payments of $62

nEW! Quick oil Painting TechniquesBecause of their long drying time, painting in oils can sometimes seem laborious and make an artist lose the spark of inspiration. The solution is two-fold: doing as much pre-planning as pos-sible and learning to let your painting evolve in front of you. Both are the product of experience, but in this class, we will learn to do both to maximize our time at the easel. Pre-planning color schemes and compositions, quick methods for transferring sketches to the canvas, simplifying the range of tone and colors – all allow us to work more quickly and effectively. In addition to working quickly, we will also learn to see where our painting is going and listen to what it needs to get there, and other tech-niques for staying on track and produce quality, finished work. Some painting experience required.

06sU126.1Saturdays, 1:00 PM - 4:00 PMJune 24 - August 19 (8 weeks)No Class July 8Tracy Hancock, Instructor$185 or two credit card payments of $92.50

Painting by Tracy Hancock, Instructor

intermediate PaintingWe have designed this course to accommodate as many student interests as possible. Whether you have painted in watercolor or oils or acrylic, you are welcome. Maybe pastels and oil pastels are your medium. This class is an open format with an instructor to push and inspire you to challenge your existing skills. Treated like an “independent study,” students work on their own projects in their preferred media. The instructor works individually during the three hour session helping and directing students. The students can choose to be more self-directed with occasional advice from the teacher or create a more structured approach. In many cases, design, composition, and color theory are emphasized and used as tools to broaden the students’ aesthetic and creative tools.

Tai Chi Chuan: Yang Style Short Form and Push handsHave you been fascinated by the sight of Tai Chi being practiced in early morn-ing parks? Your DAC instructor, Lisa Marcusson, will teach you the ancient martial arts system Yang Form in 38 Moves. In this 10 week course, you will learn the first 13 moves, which brings the form to a natural mid-point, a unit in and of itself and which contains the essence of the 38 moves. This martial art is known for its emphasis on natural energy, relying on timing, relaxation and focus rather than muscle power. Benefits include increased balance, coordination, flexibility, improved circulation, and stress-reduction from daily practice, not to mention pleasure in its execution.
