Fairy Sound Again... Cristina Patino's Snow Fairy (Ire) (Intikhab) has recov-ered from the injury which ruled her out of last Satur-day's G1 Dubai Sheema Classic, trainer Ed Dunlopannounced yesterday. Royal Ascot has been penciled infor the seasonal bow of the four-time Group 1 winner, with the June 15 G1 Prince of Wales's S. her mostlikely target. "Snow Fairy returned earlier in the weekand she seems fine, we jogged her up and she's verygood," her conditioner told PA Sport. "We are justgoing to run a few more tests on her and then we'll geta picture of what we need to do and where we are.Any injury is annoying, but she danced every dance lastyear, so we will be looking towards the middle part ofthe season and onwards." Dunlop also had news of lastyear's G3 Solario S. winner Native Khan (Fr) (Azamour{Ire}), who is Guineas-bound. "He's wintered very well,we've been pleased with his work so far and we'rehappy with him," he said. "He'll run in either race [theG1 2000 Guineas at Newmarket Apr. 30 or G1 Pouled'Essai des Poulains at Longchamp May 15] and hope-fully all goes well. He won't go for a trial, he'll run ineither Guineas first time out."

what I was looking for,@ said Petalino. AI was hoping thehorse would be closer to the front in his last race.Hopefully, this time we can get that trip.@ In the Rebel, the bay was rated off a crisp early pace set by The Factor (War Front), trained by Bob Baffert. A[Bob Baffert] came in here and scared everybody say-ing >don=t go with me,=@ said Petalino. AI was actuallyhoping to run with him. As fast as the track was play-ing that day, I was looking forward to it.@ The Factoralso remains a likely candidate for the Arkansas Derby, although Baffert has yet to commit the winner of theGII San Vicente S. to the nine-furlong contest.

Peachtree Stable - Owner Plum Pretty(f, 3, Medaglia d’Oro--Liszy, by A.P. Indy)

$130,000 2yo ‘10 OBSMARConsigned by Kirkwood Stables, Agent II

Lifetime Record: 4-2-0-2, $190,800

GISP, 25-length winner of Sunland Park Oaks

For Peachtree Stable’s John Fort, success in the horse business hasalways been about finding value. The South Carolinian, whose interestin horses began as a teen when he observed Hall of Fame conditionersMax Hirsch and Woody Stephens training near his home at the old FairGrounds Training Center in Camden, has built a powerful andsuccessful stable by developing a keen eye for talent and potential inindividuals that others gloss over. Fort was a successful polo player and

worked briefly as a school teacher aftergraduating from the University of SouthCarolina, but having a career in the horseindustry was what he always wanted, so hefound a way to make it happen. Fort founded Seaside Stable--which wouldeventually become Peachtree--in 1976,purchasing polo ponies and horses off the track, training them, and reselling them for a profit. “At that time, there weren't really anyretirement facilities for horses,” Fort recalled.“The horse slaughter business was big backthen, and there was a sad end to a lot ofracehorses' careers at that time. There were

some dealers, however, that were aware that there were people like mewho would take them and try to recycle them into useful purpose.” “Some of the horses were mares, so I figured out how to get pedigreesand I bred those mares to local Thoroughbred stallions,” he continued. “I even bought a share in a stallion in Ocala named Princely Pleasure. Ifound that the same mares I was buying for $400-500 off the racetrackwere selling for $5,000 in foal. I got intrigued by the business. I had mypolo trailer and I'd take mares down to the OBS sales in the earlydays--back in 1978, ‘79, ‘80--and sell them. It doesn't seem like a lot tome today, but at that time I was kind of squeezing out a living in thehorse business, which is what I wanted to do.” After a brief stint working for famed Calumet Farm trainer John Veitch,Fort relocated his operation to Atlanta and renamed it Peachtree. Hecontinued to grow his business, and had a breakthrough in 2001 with$105,000 KEESEP yearling Invisible Ink, who finished third in that year’sGI Florida Derby and second in the GI Kentucky Derby behindMonarchos, en route to $465,088 in career earnings.

(352) 731-9797 www.natc.cc

“We had won a lot of races, and I think I was pretty well-known in thebusiness, but Invisible Ink was the first horse to put us on the nationalstage,” said Fort. “He got a lot of publicity from ABC and all the othernews outlets and he was a very important horse to me. I'm in the horsebusiness, and he just was a horse that seemed to really make a lot ofstuff happen after that.” Fort enjoyed continued sporting and financial success in the followingyears both individually and in partnsership, selling future GI Cigar MileH. winner Lion Tamer, whom he bought for $180,000 at Keeneland in2001, privately to Michael Tabor off a seven-length maiden win atBelmont in September of 2002. He also turned a hefty profit with GSWChimichurri, a $250,000 FTFFEB juvenile in 2002 who Fort sold as ahorse of racing age for $675,000 the following year at KEENOV. Fortalso purchased future MGSW India for $400,000 in 2003 at FTSAUG,and sold the filly back to her breeders, Frank and Jane Lyon, for areported $2.05 million after a 12-length maiden romp at Saratoga in2005. One of the accomplishments that Fort is most proud of is multipleGrade I-winning millionaire Red Giant’s world record-settingperformance for 1 1/4 miles in the 2001 GI Clement L. Hirsch S. on theturf at Oak Tree at Santa Anita. “I think it's pretty remarkable that he set a world record for a mile and aquarter, the classic American distance--1:57 flat for a mile and a quarteris running pretty fast. I'm really proud of that,” beamed Fort. Fort, who has about 10-12 horses currently in training with BobBaffert, Steve Margolis, Rick Dutrow Jr. and Cathal Lynch, as well asabout 25 mares boarded at Pine Grove Plantation near Camden, has atrio of sophomores who look poised to add to the Peachtree legacy. Last Sunday, the Baffert-trained Plum Pretty (Medaglia d’Oro), third inher previous start in the GI Las Virgenes at Santa Anita Mar. 27, tookthe Sunland Park Oaks by 25 lengths. That’s right--25 lengths. “I asked Bob if he had ever won a race by 25 lengths,” Fort relayed.“He said, ‘No way!’ The most he could remember was Point Givenwinning the Belmont by 12 1/4 lengthswhich is, of course, more important thanwinning the Sunland Park Oaks by 25lengths, but still.” “She was a nice filly, she had beentraining well,” Fort said “She'd been inthose one-turn races out in Californiaagainst a whole different level of horses. The switch to two turns was a big part ofit, as was the fact that [MGISW] TurbulentDescent and those horses weren't in therace. What can happen in a race like thatis that those fillies simply weren't as goodas Plum Pretty, and when they tried to runwith her early, they just couldn't keep up.She pushed them out of their comfortzone, and the race was pretty much just left to her.” Plum Pretty, who RNA’d for $75,000 as a yearling at FTMOCT, is oneof those value buys that Fort has built his business on. He scooped herup for just $130,000 as a juvenile at OBS March. “There wasn't anything not to like about her,” Fort recalled when askedhow he picked Plum Pretty out of the sale. “Obviously, the pedigree wasthere. If pedigrees are already made, then typically you can't affordhorses or you're paying a premium. I have to create value. The pedigreewas extremely make-able. The mare had had three or four foals andhadn't had any winners, but those are the kind of pedigrees you canstep into with the right individual and ‘boom,' whereas other people arethinking ‘That mare's never going to produce anything.'” Cont. pxxx

Take Two--John Fort cont.

Fort continued, “I would describe Plum Pretty physically, as atwo-year-old in training, as having the right frame, but she was veryunfinished. But, I grew up used to looking at unfinished horses and thatmight have given me an edge.” Fort used an interesting analogy to describe buying at a two-year-oldsale. “It’s like playing poker,” he explained. “You pay a little more for everycard you look at. Sometimes I can’t really afford to pay the premium fora horse who works in :10 flat or :09 4/5 or whatever it is, but every oncein a while at the two-year-old sales there are horses like Plum Pretty. Ithink good horses can be anywhere, and every time I buy a horse I’mlooking for an edge. You always have to look for an edge, because thereare still buyers out there with plenty of money who are going to outbidyou on the obvious horses. You can wait until they get to the racetrackand break their maiden by 10 lengths down at Calder, and then you’veseen another card and there’s another whole group of people waiting tosee that card. And they pay a lot. ” Fort was willing to dig a little deeper, however, for a colt fittinglynamed Red Ace, who he scooped up for $300,000 at FTFFEB, whichwas $165,000 more than the next most expensive two-year-old byNorthern Afleet purchased in 2010. The $77,000 KEESEP yearlingbroke his maiden in ultra-impressive fashion second out by 6 1/2 lengthsat Fair Grounds Mar. 13 for Steve Margolis after running fourth on debutbehind “TDN Rising Star” Bind (Pulpit). “He was an expensive purchase for me,” Fort admitted. “He is a trulybeautiful horse, and he was truly beautiful at the two-year-old sale.[Taylor Made V.P. of Boarding Operations] Frank Taylor came up to me15 or 20 minutes after I bought Red Ace and said, ‘John, that is the mostbeautiful Northern Afleet that has ever been born.’ Then he amplifiedthat and said, ‘I take that back--that’s the most beautiful Northern Afleetthat will ever be born.’” Despite the somewhat lofty price tag, Fort still believes Red Ace was abargain. “Northern Afleet is not a real commercial stallion,” Fort said of the sireof five 2011 stakes winners, headed by GI Gulfstream Park Turf H.upsetter Teaks North. “He’s just one of those stallions that has a lot ofstakes winners, but everyone walks right on by him. Red Ace hadn't soldfor much as a yearling--I did not see him as a yearling--he sold deep intothe sale. And he didn't work real fast, but I liked the way he worked. Heworked like a horse who was classy, a good mover, but didn't have thatquick turn of foot that was going to get a whole class of buyers attention.Actually, a lot of the people that bid against me on him were trainers asopposed to agents. I was thrilled to get him.” Red Ace will resurface in a 1 1/16-mile allowance event on thePolytrack at Keeneland Apr. 16, and the Ontario-bred’s long-term goal isthe Jun. 26 Queen’s Plate, the first leg of the Canadian Triple Crown.

Fort’s Flashpoint, who took the GII Hutcheson S. at Gulfstream by 7 1/4 lengths Feb. 26, will contest Sunday’s GI Florida Derby in his firsttwo-turn try for Richard Dutrow Jr. “I'm running in the Florida Derby because I can visualize a favorablepace scenario,” Fort, whose charge has been categorized by many asmerely a sprinter, explained. “No race is easy to win--Grade I races areimpossible to win, but I think we have a shot.” Surprisingly, and refreshingly considering the prevalence of “DerbyFever” that tends to plague many owners, Fort said that Flashpoint couldrun well in the Florida Derby, but not ship to Kentucky for the FirstSaturday in May. “It’s really important to realize that these regionalderbies like the Florida Derby are really old, prestigious races...I’d loveto win the Florida Derby, and then I’ll think about the next race that Ihave to win, but it’s not mandatory that the Florida Derby winner go tothe Kentucky Derby. Although, I’m not ruling that out, and I haven’t wonthe Florida Derby yet.” “I’ve been in the Derby three times,” Fortsaid. “I haven't won it yet. I'd really like towin it, because it's such an importantachievement and a legacy achievementand it would be great financially as well, butbeing in the Derby is not that big of a dealto me at this point. I also think I've got areal strong hand with Plum Pretty in the [GIKentucky] Oaks, and if we had a real con-tender for the Oaks that would be great forthat weekend. We don't have to get too greedy.” But, with all the success Fort has enjoyed, could you blame him? --Brian DiDonato

FARM HOPPING IN SOUTH AMERICA by TomThornbury, Keeneland’s Associate Director of Sales The excellent quality of the yearlings selected for thesales in Brazil and Argentina is typical of that found inSouth America. First of all, the climate is pleasant, never harsh, which encourages growth and early matu-

rity. Secondly, in bothBrazil and Argentina, you will find anagrarian-based econ-omy. Both countriesraise oceans of soybeans, corn, sugar caneand huge herds of cat-tle. Argentina is blessedwith dark, rich soil andthousand of square

miles of endless, flat topography. Brazil is equallyblessed with productive soil, but also with a more tem-perate climate and more rainfall. Both are huge coun-tries, but Brazil=s size is fantastic. Everything growsthere in abundance, and Brazil dominates the world=sorange juice, coffee, rubber, soy bean and sugar mar-kets. In fact, Brazil runs its cars on ethanol producedfrom sugar. Ethanol is produced far more efficientlyfrom sugar than from corn, and its use in ethanol pro-duction does not reduce availability of a precious foodsource, as does usingcorn. There is no argu-ment as to where thebest beef in the world isproduced--South Amer-ica. The grass is knee-deep, and there is littleneed to fatten the cattlewith grain. This year, theKeeneland inspectionteam spent two weeks inspecting yearlings from manyfarms, large and small, all over Argentina.

The majority of the older, more established farms arelocated within an hour or two from Buenos Aires in SanAntonio de Areco and Capitan Sarmiento. Farms like ElParaiso raise hundreds of horses on immense pasturethat has been in the family for several generations. They stand notable sire Incurable Optimist, sire of multi-ple champion and Horse of the Year Life of Victory(Arg). Nearby, Arroyo de Luna breeds to race and selland stand respected sire Not for Sale, sire of AsiaticBoy (Arg) and Forty Licks (Arg), to name just a couple. Other successful farms in this area includeAlessandro Miserocchi=s Santa Ines, from which cameAHorse of the World@ Invasor (Arg) (Candy Stripes); andHaras La Pasion, the farm of prominent racing stableRubio B.=s owner Ricardo Benedicto and his sonNicolas, who are on track to be a major force in breed-ing as well as racing. Stallion station La Mission handlesa long list of shuttle stallions, which has included Gi-ant=s Causeway, Johannesburg and Pollard=s Vision.Another new upstart in the stallion business isAmerican-styled La Leyenda, owned by Alberto andRenata Stein, where they have shuttle stallions Ex-change Rate and Offlee Wild. We made inspection stops at nearly every Thorough-bred breeding farm in the region. We visited HarasCarampangue, operated by the younger IgnacioPavlovsky, where sire-sensation Orpen standsandChenault, a new venture with some really well-bred,top-quality yearlings. Cont. p9

We also visited De La Pomme, owned by theLiberman family, who have extensive investments inSouth American racing through LARC (Latin AmericaRacing Channel) and Hipodromo Maronas in Montevi-deo, Uruguay; Don Arcangel, owned by Pablo Maggio, who stands Manipulator (Ire); El Catorce, owned by

professional soccer playerClaudio Pizarro, who alsohas a great group of year-lings for the sale; El Mallin, owned by Antonio Bullrich, who is the president ofboth the Bullrich Sale Com-pany and the HipodromoArgentino de Palermo;Haras Esperanza, ownedby Raul Lottero, a very

passionate breeder; Haras Melincue, a farm with beauti-fully designed and built facilities and some very finehorses as well; and Haras Vacacion, owned by PabloZavaleta, where there is a deep, rich history of success-ful breeding and racing. A little farther out, La Quebrada is run by youngmaster horseman Hernan Ceriani, following decades ofsuccess by his father, and has a strong line-up of stal-lions, like Easing Along, sire of multiple champion andrecent Horse of the Year Interaction (Arg), and South-ern Halo, whose success needs no validation. Theyoung horses are raised far away at a second farm, where they have huge pastures, surrounded by thou-sands of acres of grain crops. Juan Carlos Bago=s Firmamento, in both nearby LaPlata and distant Mar del Plata, is annually consideredfor Breeder of the Year. Much farther out are farmssuch as Alfredo Camogli=s Alfalfar, from which havecome legions of successful racehorses, like recent 2-year-old filly star La Toscana Cat (Arg) (Easing Along). La Biznaga, owned by Carlos Blaquier, is a two-hourtrip away by twin-engine plane. It is a magnificent farmwith extraordinary success, having stood Bernstein, who has had even greater success in Argentina than inthe United States as a graded-stakes producer.

The farm of Julio Bozano, Santa Maria de Araras, transcends the scope of nearly any farm in the world. There are branches of this farm in Mar del Plata andCapitan Sarmiento in Argentina, one in Curitiba, Paranaand Bage in Brazil, and one in Ocala, Florida, and theircolors are on winners world-wide in the highest levelsof competition. Dr. Ignacio Pavlovsky, one of Argen-tina=s most highly respected horsemen, is the generalmanager there.

Our trip also took us into the distant provinces of LaPampa, Cordoba and Rosario, the Abread-basket@ ofArgentina. In these provinces, you will find endlessexpanses of pastureland, huge herds of cattle, andthousands of acres of soy beans, wheat, corn andsugar cane. In La Pampa, we visited the farm of JavierAVasco@ Zubizaretta, Haras Ustasti. He has the distinc-tion, as a breeder, of having bred two Argentine Derbywinners in the past few years. In Cordoba we stopped at La Forteleza, owned byHoracio and Marcella Andrenacci. Horacio is involved incattle and grain production on a huge scale and Mar-cella is actually the force behind the Thoroughbredbreeding side of things. At Haras Don Florentino, owned by Luis Grimaldi, they are principally grain pro-ducers. However, they stand the very popular sireAlpha Plus, and they breed to race and sell. Their pri-mary sales are held at the farm, although they will besending some special individuals to the Copa BullrichSale this year. Fromthere, we traveled toRosario to the farm ofWalter Tombolini,Haras Viejo Tombo.Adjacent to town, thisfarm is more compara-ble to an Americanfarm in size. There ismore than amplespace and excellent pasture, and Tombolini is con-stantly upgrading his breeding stock with mares fromthe United States.

Brasilia... There are four major areas of breeding in Brazil. Onearea is within the state of Sao Paulo, a huge expanse offarmland outside the highly commercial city of Sao

Paulo, in the center ofBrazil, south of Rio deJaneiro. Some of thefarms there are thou-sands of acres in scope, where primarily coffee, oranges, cattle, rubbertrees, forests of eucalyp-tus trees for pulp-wood,sugar cane, soy beansand corn are raised. TheThoroughbred breeding

operation on many of these farms is just a componentof the overall farm production. Farms are located atlong distances from one another in this region. Some ofthe major breeding farms in Sao Paulo are Calunga,Interlagos, Sao Jose & Expedictus, Louveira, ValeVerde, Sao Quirino, San Francesco, Fazenda Boa Vista, and Caporanga. In Parana, a state to the south of Sao Paulo, locatedin the mountains and close to the Atlantic coast, thefarms are smaller, more centrally located, and horseproduction is primary, although with the rising pricesfor commodities, lots of acres are now covered withsoy beans, sugar cane and corn. The climate there isunusual for Brazil; because it is located in the moun-tains and close to the sea, it remains cool, with con-stant rain year-round. It is similar in climate to Ireland, and the soil is dark and rich, unlike the predominant redclay soils throughout the rest of Brazil. Some of thecountry=s most successful breeders are located here;Santarem, Anderson, Springfield, Curitibano, Chesa-peake, Palmerini, Santa Rita da Serra, San Jose daSerra, Santa Maria de Araras, J.B. Barros, and HarasValente. There are anumber of otherbreeders located inParana that, alongwith these largerfarms, contributehorses for racing inCuritiba, Sao Paulo, and Rio de Janeiro. Farther to the southis the region of Bage, where some of themost prolific and successful breeders reside, such asTNT, Old Friends, Anderson, Santa Maria de Araras,Doce Vale, and Fazenda Monthesir. In Bage, the farmland is primarily dedicated to soy beans, sugar cane, cattle and rice production. The Thoroughbred opera-tions are very large and the climate can be very hot, dry, and more harsh, but great for hay production.Cont. p11

This area is physically closer to Uruguay and Argen-tina, and most of these big outfits have farms else-where in Brazil, as well as in Argentina. Additionally, there is a huge breeding operation inPonta Pora, which lays half in Brazil and half in Para-

guay, Haras Ponta Pora. The region is one of thelargest expanses of farm-land in Brazil, dedicated tosoy beans, corn and sugarcane. One of the world=slargest ethanol productionplants is there, along withan assembly plant for JohnDeere tractors and com-bines that has become the

company=s number one production plant. Ponta Pora, owned by Camil Georges, is always among the leadingbreeders throughout Brazil, as they have more than 300mares and the popular stallion Durban Thunder (Brz). The horsemanship throughout South America, andparticularly in Argentina, is arguably the best in theworld. Everyone either plays polo or rides to tend cattleherds (or horses), and the farm workers are Agauchos,@or they have been steeped in the gaucho-way. Thepassion for breeding and racing horses goes back cen-turies to the introduction of the horse by Spanish con-

querors. The art has been refined through importationof deep European bloodlines, and more recently en-hanced by the American speed-breed. Argentine polo is in a league of its own. Exceptionallytalented players, such as AdolfoCambiaso, make millions as pro-fessional players, as well asthrough selling polo ponies. Infact, Bullrich had a sale this yearof 25 polo ponies from Cambiaso=sstable, La Dolfina, which broughttotal receipts of $3,119,000. Oneindividual, a Aclone@ of Cambiaso=sbest-ever polo mare went for anastounding $800,000. South American countries cling to a traditional agrar-ian life, and it=s not unusual to find that several genera-tions of families have grown up working on farms, where they tend crops, work cattle and raise horses. The horses raised are durable, strong, solid of bone andhoof, and are generally of exceptional physical confor-mation. Those selected for these particular sales are theleggy type, with depth of girth, lovely top-lines, and arelong striding, Classic-distance type horses. They matchup with the best found anywhere in the world, and theSouth American horse is undeniably competitive wher-ever in the world they race.
