Iam sending you to them to open their eyes and turn them fromdarkness to light and fromthe power ofSatan to God. .Acts 26:28

Dearest Friends & Family,Imagine a world where everyone wears a protective, surgical mask. Imagine a world where no one isadmitted into any public facility without first having their temperature taken by a masked clerk at the doorwieldingan electronic or perhaps even a laser beam thermometer. Imagine a table in the foyer of yourchurch equipped with masks, alcohol spray to disinfect your hands, and literature on the prevention of thedeadly SARS virus. Imagine seeing sanitation crews decked out in full germ warfare-looking protectivegear and accompanied by military police as they spray disinfectant around the neighborhood. Imaginehaving a medical emergency . . . you arrive at the hospital and find that the entire emergency room hasbeen moved outside into the parking lot under the covering of huge tents. You'll be attended to there. Youcannot gain entrance into the hospital emergency area until they're sure you do not have SARS Imaginebecoming an obsessive, compulsive hand washer --1 have This is our world here in Taiwan.Just the other day, we couldn't even enter a local department store's parking garage without firststopping, rolling down the car windows, and waiting patiently while the guard measured our temperatures with his

neat little laser thermometer Amazing Recently I went to visitat a nearby elementary school. I hadn't quite cooled downenough from my morning run and was refused entrancebecause I was too warm Please understand; we don t resentthe inconvenience. It's actually reassuring to see that ourentire society is being extremely conscientious in monitoringthe SARS epidemic.

Besides just plain fear an d anxiety, SARS is having another effect on Taiwan. We're seeing Christians hererise up to show tangible concern an d to pray as never before for their godless nation. As in II Chronicles7:13-14, they're praying that through this suffering, the Taiwanese people would turn toGo d an d that Hew o ul d h ea l their la n d .

We believe that Taiwan is experiencing this trial so that God s power might be displayed (John 9:3). OurLord said, We must do the work of Him wh o sent me, as long as it is day; night is coming when n o on eca n work. John 9:4) In an effort to be about ou r Father's business at this opportune time, some of ou rchurch people decided that at least we should start doing some serious praying an d try to encourage thequarantined medical workers an d SARS patients in a visible way. We had a banner made which readsomething like Dear doctors, nurses, staff and sick friends: We know you're having a rough time. Wewill pray for you daily and ask God to protect your health and giveyou peace. On uesday May20th,we took the banner to Chang Gung Hospital near our church (the most affected hospital in southernTaiwan), tied it between two coconut trees, an d began to pray an d sing. Within seconds local mediaswarmed us, taking pictures and asking what we were up to. Itwas a great opportunity to share ourconcern an d the hope we have. We made the papers, tooThe next day I attended the weekly local pastor's prayer meeting an d shared with them what we had done. Some had already seen the newspapers. I explained that we were not there to advertise our church, nor

Kaohsiung pastors leading Kaohsiung Medical College & Hospital administrators in prayer.

ourselves, but to encourage our medical workers and sick friends and to call upon God s mercy and power.By the next Sunday, many of them and their churches in Kaohsiung gathered at the hospitals for prayer. We were even welcomed by hospital administrators. At Kaohsiung Medical College & Hospital, about 100believers were led inside to pray and sing openly right in the main lobby The Taiwan Liberty Times wasthere, again, to cover this gathering. God is workingAlthough tensions have begun to ease somewhat this month, with the lifting of a Taiwan travel advisory bythe World Health Organization, please continue to pray with us thatGod will display His power here, andthat we and all Taiwanese Christians will take advantage of this day God has given us to do His work.Another big news item around here these days is that KaohsiungGood News Christian Church is about tobecome a parent Well, let's say we re expecting. Actually, we don t even really have a due date yet,but we are expecting Nearly half of our missionary team is leaving, or rather, are being sent to plant a newchurch in Taichung, the central city in Taiwan, about 3 hours north of Kaohsiung. David & Brenda Atkinand their three children, along with Angi Davis, have receivedGod s call to establish a new church fromthe ground up. They have located a churchless area in a booming district of the 3rd largest city on theisland, have just moved, and are preparing to implement what they have learned in the Kaohsiung church, trusting God to do what they ve seen Him do here. Our other co-workers, John & Cheryl Dunn, are stillhere. All of us, together with the entire church, send the Atkinsand Angi off with our blessing. God blessthem, tooWe were greatly blessed this month with a visit from one of our favorite professors from Ozark ChristianCollege. Gordon Clyner extended a mission trip to the Philippines to swing by Taiwanand see some of his

kids from Bible college days. In many ways he has been like afather to Kathy Jo over the years. He was able to celebrateFather's Day with us and be in on our sending-off Sunday for theAtkins and Angi Davis. Thank you, Lord, for gusts of fresh air likeyou brought to us with Brother Clymer

Some not-so-happy news we feel we should share with you is therecent closing of one of our largest supporting churches, Chuck'shome church, East Tulsa Christian Church. Undoubtedly, manypeople both members and those looking in from the outside, havetheir take on what ultimately contributed to the collapse of thisone-time great church. It is probably not appropriate toconjecture about this here. Although this means a significant lossof support for us, we serve a God who knows all and has alwaysprovided. Weare confident that He will continue to do so. We are in His loving Hands.
