; am sending you to them to open their eyesand turn them fromdarkness to light and fromthe power ofSatan to God . .. Acts26:28

Dearest Partners in th e Gospel,

These are exciting, stretching, growing times here at Kaohsiung Good News Christian Church. Our peopleare being challenged to move beyond their comfortzones and reach out to a host of new people the Lordis bringing our way. We've had 10 baptisms since Christmas. Our leaders seem committed to disciplingtheir cell members, leading people to Christ, and preparing our church for the future more than ever before.

There's a fervency here and along with it challenges.

Running with a New Crowd.. .I've been running with a new crowd lately. I affectionately call them the Beetle Nut Gang. They'rea group of what you might call grass roots guyswith rather base habits, which ar e slowly beingtransformed by th e New Spirit indwelling them. This class of m en in Taiwan is k n ow n f or wha t

they chewbeetle nut (the closest cultural equivalent to which would be a pouch of Red Man ora tub of Skoal in America), for what they permanently inscribe on their bodiestattoos (of various interesting designs ), and for their general Beetle Nut Gangrough-hewn appearance. I haven't taken up chewing the nut yet, on pain of excommunication from KathyJo. (What itdoes to your breath and smile is more than even straight up Listerine or sand blasting can takecare of.) Butsome of our men and Iare thoroughlyenjoying every minute with these spiritually hungry guyswhom the church in Taiwan has not yet reached. The Lord has miraculously given us an /n with this group.Pray that our people will unconditionally accept them. Incidentally, the first convert inthis group has alreadyled his brother to the Lord and just baptized his best friend

    Brother Lyou, first convert of th e Beetle Nu t Gang,bapt izes h i s b r ot he r.

Pas to r in PreparationAfter months of seeking th e Lord's direction and provision for th e future leaders ofo ur c hu rc h, w e h av e called Peter He a sou r pastor in preparation and his giftedwife, Angel. They re as solid in th e Wordas anyone we ve known here. They'rehumble, eager servants. Peter, although

not quite finished with seminary, preaches Preachinglike a veteran. He s a committed discipleran d understands the power an d potential of dynamic cell groups. Peter an d Angel's love for our church istransparent, and our people ar e loving an d accepting them in return.

As Kathy & I transition more an d more intowhat we re viewing as Phase 2 of ou r life's

work, we re experiencing th e joy and sa tisfaction of contributing to th e ministriesof younger missionaries. We realize eachtime we encoun ter our Asian colleagues

on their turf, pursuing their often overwhelming an d daunting callings, that wetruly have been there, done that. ' We' regrateful and excited about t he f ac t t ha t

God has prepared us over the years for this task of missionary mentorship and encouragement.

Last month found us inThailand, helping two new couples come together as a team and begin forming an

initial game plan fortheir first church plant. n May we will be visiting our workers in China and Mongoliathe land I'm convinced Jesus was referring to when He said we would be His witnesses even to the endsof the earth. Last year I went alone to this wilderness. This time Kathy is coming along to se e for herselfwhat the end of the earth is like, an d to share her incredible gift of encouragement with our missionariest h e r e

I m especially excited about Kathy s role, together with me, as an Asian Field Coordinator. She adds to therecipe a much needed, but often neglected ingredientessential ministry to women. Sometimes we forgettha t the wives of missionaries ar e also missionaries. Many of them were called by God before they met theirhusbands. Just because they're married to a male missionary doesn't now make them less of a one themselves. Kathy knows intuitively, since she's a woman, and from experience exactly what these precious galsneed. It's great to see he r in action

A L esson in Overcoming. . .Last year was a year of painful misfortune for Kurt, our # 3 son. InMarch, while participating in th e high jump during Games Day atschool, one strenuous jump detached the patellar tendon, along witha chunk of bone, from th e top of his left tibia. (For us laymen, that sthe tendon attaching the kneecap to the top of the shinbone.) Surgery an d two screws put him back together. I don't think we've everseen anyone as determined to nof c iv f as Kurt. Ioften saw him. Ouch Left hand, here we so
