Bell-Ringer• Why are solders not allowed to march across bridges.• Aside from the plan impacts to the twin towers in New
York, what caused the failure of the buildings?
• Bell-Ringer and Journal are due at the end of class.• Chapter 16 Binder due Wednesday!

What is it?• Forensic engineering is the investigation of materials,
products, structures or components that fail or do notoperate/function as intended, causing personal injuryor damage to property
• The consequences of failure are dealt with by the lawof product liability
• The subject is applied most commonly in civil lawcases, although may be of use in criminal law cases
![Page 4: Forensic Engineering April 19 , 2010 Special Topics …wardisiani.com/Documents/Forensic-Science/Lecture-Notes/...Purpose •Generally the purpose of a forensic engineering investigation](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022041913/5e689a45f927f2033f6f3b86/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Purpose• Generally the purpose of a forensic engineering
investigation is to locate cause or causes offailure with a view to improve performance orlife of a component, or to assist a court indetermining the facts of an accident.
• It can also involve investigation of intellectualproperty claims, especially patents
![Page 5: Forensic Engineering April 19 , 2010 Special Topics …wardisiani.com/Documents/Forensic-Science/Lecture-Notes/...Purpose •Generally the purpose of a forensic engineering investigation](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022041913/5e689a45f927f2033f6f3b86/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
• After an accident, forensics engineers examinebroken parts and bring together a list ofprobable failure mechanisms to be investigated
• Interviews are conducted to determine asequence of events. Drawings, specifications, and operational procedures are reviewed
![Page 6: Forensic Engineering April 19 , 2010 Special Topics …wardisiani.com/Documents/Forensic-Science/Lecture-Notes/...Purpose •Generally the purpose of a forensic engineering investigation](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022041913/5e689a45f927f2033f6f3b86/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Methods• Methods used in forensic investigations include
reverse engineering, inspection of witnessstatements, a working knowledge of currentstandards, as well as examination of the failedcomponent itself
• The fracture surface of a failed product canreveal much information on how the item failedand the loading pattern prior to failure
![Page 7: Forensic Engineering April 19 , 2010 Special Topics …wardisiani.com/Documents/Forensic-Science/Lecture-Notes/...Purpose •Generally the purpose of a forensic engineering investigation](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022041913/5e689a45f927f2033f6f3b86/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
• The key task in many such investigations is to identifythe failure mechanism by examining the failed partusing physical and chemical techniques. This activity issometimes called root cause analysis
• Corrosion is another common failure mode needingcareful analysis to determine the active agents in theenvironment which initiated the corrosive attack.

Application• Insurance companies use forensic engineers to prove
liability or non liability• Rail crashes, aviation accidents and some automobile
accidents are investigated by forensic engineersparticularly where component failure is suspected
• Appliances, consumer products, medical devices, structures, industrial machinery, and even simple handtools such as hammers or chisels can call forinvestigations upon incidents causing injury orproperty damages

• Forensic Engineering is also useful in productdevelopment. If a product is faulty using Forensicengineering can aid in improving the product.
