The Sustainable Forestry Initiative® Inc.
is an independent, non-profit organization
dedicated to promoting sustainable
forest management. SFI® works at the
intersection of sustainable forestry, thriving
communities and responsible procurement.
SFI is a solutions-oriented sustainability
organization. We collaborate on forest-
based conservation and community
initiatives that demonstrate and enhance
our shared quality of life. And we provide
supply chain assurances for brand
owners and consumers around the world
through standards, data and authentic
stories about the life-sustaining value of
managed forests.
SFI exemplifies the impact of responsible
forestry globally. Our efforts help people,
organizations and companies make
informed choices when it comes to
sustainably sourced forest products and
the management of forest resources to
ensure a healthy tomorrow.
More than 285 million acres/115 million
hectares of forestland is certified to the
SFI Forest Management Standard. These
lands, stretching from Canada’s boreal
forest to the U.S. South, are owned
and managed by the public and private
sectors, conservation groups, Indigenous
peoples and academic institutions.
Collectively, these lands have the scale
to work as a living research lab for
forest conservation and responsible
management.
SFI Inc. is governed by the SFI Board,
which sets SFI’s strategic direction and is
responsible for overseeing and improving
the internationally recognized SFI
Program and SFI standards. The Board’s
three chambers represent environmental,
social and economic sectors equally.
WHO WE AREWe are a community of people who stand for future forests because forests affect us all.
4 2017 SFI PROGRESS REPORT4 2017 SFI PROGRESS REPORT
At the Sustainable Forestry
Initiative, we believe we all share
a fundamental relationship with
forests. Forests clean the air we
breathe and the water we drink and
provide life-sustaining values.
As part of a global community committed to
sustaining our forests, SFI is committed to
ensuring that well-managed forests achieve
their full potential to lift people up and
improve our shared quality of life.
The story of our progress in this report
is interwoven with data, people and the
accomplishments of the SFI community
across North America.
We chose this calendar format for the
second consecutive year based on the
fantastic reception of our 2016 progress
report calendar.
This calendar shows how the important work
of sustainable forest management is a year-
round endeavor. It also illustrates how our
well-managed forests provide conservation,
community and economic benefits that
improve the lives of millions of people.
As in previous years, this story couldn’t
have been written without the hard work
and dedication of the people in our
SFI Implementation Committees and
our broader network of conservation,
community, Indigenous peoples,
government, business and other partners.
This grassroots network is making a
difference across the United States and
Canada. Every day they help us live up to
the idea of “Forests. A way of life.”
Their accomplishments are celebrated in
many places in this report. Thank you to
everyone in the SFI community. Together,
we are making a difference.
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CEO
Our supply chain starts in North America’s well-managed forests and stretches around the world.

FUTURE FOREST LEADERS
The future of well-managed forests depends on developing the next generation of forest stewards.
The National Boy Scout Jamboree is a gathering of thousands of Scouts held every four years at the Summit Bechtel Reserve, BSA’s newest high adventure base, in West Virginia. Last year, about 13,000 acres of forest at the Summit were certified to the SFI Forest Management Standard. Overall, more than 100,000 acres of BSA land is certified to the SFI Forest Management Standard.
“Boy Scouts of America values SFI as a partner. Together, we help instill respect and appreciation for the environment. From merit badges to environmental activities, like conservation trails, our partnership helps youth benefit from nature.”

SFI RESEARCH ON VERNAL POOLS HELPS CONSERVE IMPORTANT
Amphibians are at risk worldwide. Research on vernal pools will help conserve this important amphibian habitat.
Support from SFI is facilitating cooperation between academics, forest managers and conservationists to help conserve species that live in vernal pools – seasonal ponds filled with water or melted snow – on the Kenauk Nature reserve. The Kenauk Nature property, which covers 26,000 hectares near Montreal and is partly owned by the Nature Conservancy of Canada, is certified to SFI.
“This research, which takes advantage of new DNA technologies, plays a key role in improving understanding of the diversity of life in vernal pool ecosystems across North American deciduous forests. The results will help guide responsible forest management in these ecosystems.”

IMPORTANT CONSERVATION BENEFITS ARE
ENHANCED THROUGH THE
GRANTS PROGRAM
SFI grants support partnerships with conservation groups to enhance understanding of the value of forest management across North America.
Since 2010, SFI conservation grants have contributed $3.4 million to conservation research and pilot efforts, and leveraged nearly three times that much from partner organizations. Projects include improving wildlife habitat management, research on recovery of species-at-risk, and developing new methods to measure conservation values.
“SFI is a strong partner in our work to quantify carbon storage in Canada’s forests and boreal forest wetlands. Wetland conservation is important for carbon and for other environmental values like waterfowl habitat, biodiversity and water-quality protection.”

BRING CRITICAL SCALE TO CONSERVATION OUTCOMES
MILLION ACRES
Forests play a critical role in achieving global sustainable development goals relative to water, biodiversity, climate change and carbon sequestration.
SFI and multiple partner organizations, ranging from the USDA and the American Bird Conservancy to the Canadian Forest Service and NatureServe, are working to quantify conservation values associated with well-managed forests. These metrics, based on sound science and research, will keep forests at the heart of work on climate change and other critical environmental issues.
“NatureServe is developing metrics to quantify the condition of species, ecosystems, landscapes, and ecological processes on forestlands certified to SFI. We hope this work will help demonstrate the conservation value of well-managed forests.”

CONSERVATIONISTS
Migratory birds cover vast landscapes. SFI offers a living laboratory for researchers to track them across North America.
SFI is helping boreal birds by supporting the University of Alberta’s Boreal Avian Modelling (BAM) Project. The BAM project is developing models to help land managers, including forest managers, understand the diversity of habitats birds need for breeding. This work will help conserve forested habitats now and in future for a variety of birds.
“Billions of birds migrate to and from the boreal forest from as far away as South America. They face many threats along the way and on their breeding grounds. SFI’s North American scale is important for bird research and conservation.”

Indigenous peoples in North America and around the world have long relied on forests for cultural, spiritual and material needs.
SFI supports Indigenous peoples’ interests in multiple ways including in elements of our standard, our grants program and through partnerships. SFI is proud to partner with leaders like the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business (CCAB) in support of its Progressive Aboriginal Relations (PAR) program. Indigenous leaders also serve on the SFI Board of Directors.
“The SFI Standard reinforces many of the objectives we currently have in managing our forests — protecting special sites, conservation and community involvement. Through certification to SFI we can now communicate these important values to our customers and communities.”
— Lorraine Cobiness, president, miitigoog l.p. chief of ochiichagwe’babigo’ining first nation

Kids learn by experiencing nature. A central part of SFI’s mission is to educate kids to grow up to be future forest leaders.
Today’s kids spend more time indoors than ever. Fostering an appreciation for nature and getting kids outside is critical to keeping them healthy. SFI supports outdoor education programs through teacher tours, summer camps and curriculum development. Among our many partners are Boy Scouts of America, Envirothon, Forests Ontario Forestry Connects, Scouts Canada, 4-H and Indigenous communities.
“SFI understands that environmental education provides important opportunities for teachers and students to become engaged in real-world issues transcending classroom walls. They can get the skills they’ll need to be creative problem-solvers for complex environmental issues.”
— Laura Downey, co-chair, project learning tree education operating committee

Companies want assurance that their products are from responsibly managed forests.
The SFI Forest Partners® Program currently includes:
They invest in the future of forests by committing to increase the source of forest products and mills that are certified to SFI. This work is strengthening the link between landowners, brand owners and markets.
“Certification through the SFI Forest Partners Program allows us to show the private landowners we work with, that are interested in managing for wildlife and long-term forest sustainability, that we’re doing what we say we’re doing and what we do works.

Sound research helps guide forest management planning today and how it evolves tomorrow.
SFI supports research activities to improve forest health, productivity and sustainable management of forest resources, and the environmental benefits and performance of forest products. Research drives innovation and new ideas. It helps address pressing conservation issues and threats to forests like invasive species and climate change.
“NCASI and SFI are strong partners. With a focus on research areas like water quality, biodiversity, sustainable forestry and climate, NCASI’s mission is aligned with SFI’s support for conservation research.”

Forest products certified to SFI sit at the sweet spot of economic productivity and sustainability.
Every day people go to work to produce a range of products from well-managed forests. The forest products industry gives us everything from lumber, cereal boxes and window frames to high-tech car parts, clothing and cosmetics. Many of these products carry the SFI label as a proof point that they are from a responsible source.
“Forests are a major source of wealth in North America and the sustainable products they produce provide a wide range of economic, social and environmental benefits.”

FROM WELL-MANAGED FORESTS IS AN EXCELLENT CHOICE FOR ANY GREEN BUILDING PROJECT
NOVEMBER 2018SUNDAY MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY FRIDAY SATURDAY
Thanksgiving Day (US)
Remembrance Day (CA)Veterans Day (US)
Many of wood’s positive attributes in construction depend in part on whether the forest resource is well managed.
Trees absorb carbon dioxide as they grow, sequestering and storing carbon while producing oxygen. This means building homes and other products from wood can help mitigate climate change. Products certified to SFI are recognized by many leading green building rating programs around the world like Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and Green Globes.
“Our cross-laminated timber reduces a project’s cost and carbon footprint. Now, with certification to the SFI Chain of Custody Standard, we can also offer our clients supply chain assurance that our products are sourced from well-managed forests that are third-party certified to rigorous standards.”
— Casey Malmquist, president and general manager, smartlam

The SFI label gives consumers a way to support and participate in responsible forest management.
From furniture to printer paper and packaging, you can find the SFI on-product label on a wide range of items you buy every day for your home or office. It tells buyers and consumers that a product has been responsibly sourced or comes from a certified forest. SFI labels are part of a program that helps sustain communities, fund conservation research, educate youth and train loggers.
The SFI logo, and what it stands for, is recognized more than any other forest certification standard, according to a survey of 80,000 U.S. consumers.

EXTERNAL REVIEW PANEL MEMBERS
EXTERNAL REVIEW PANEL LETTER
The SFI External Review Panel is a distinguished group of independent experts representing U.S. and Canadian conservation, professional, academic and public organizations. The panel provides external input and operates independently from SFI.
The panel oversees the SFI standards review process and conducts an annual independent review of the SFI Program to ensure the annual SFI progress report objectively and credibly states the status of SFI Program implementation.
The achievements documented in this year’s progress report and presented to the ERP demonstrate SFI’s growth into a mature sustainable forest management standard and a full-fledged conservation program. SFI reaches beyond program participants into a large and growing circle of communities, partner organizations and caring individuals, while supporting scientific research and effective training through implementation of the SFI certification standards. The 34 SFI Implementation Committees are key to SFI’s success, delivering economic, social and environmental benefits at the local level and keeping the program grounded in its bottom-up approach.
The development and implementation of sustainable forestry standards remain at the core of the program’s achievements. These achievements are visible on the 285 million acres/115 million hectares of lands certified to the SFI Forest Management Standard and in the responsible forestry practices employed on millions of additional acres through the SFI Fiber Sourcing Standard. We are pleased to advise and support such a positive force for the sustainability of forests in the U.S. and Canada.

SFI CERTIFICATE HOLDERS
SFI is primarily supported financially by fees from SFI Program Participants who use the program’s forest management and fiber sourcing standards. These SFI Program Participants include private landowners, forest product companies, managers of public lands, Indigenous groups, conservation organizations, state and local public agencies, community interests and universities.
In 2016, SFI Program Participants provided 90% of the funding for SFI and the remaining 10% came from annual conference revenue, service agreements, investment income and other sources.
SFI funding is not tied to the certification decision. Certified SFI Program Participants are audited by independent certification bodies accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), ANAB and/or the Standards Council of Canada (SCC). SFI has no role in determining whether a certificate is granted— this decision is made independently by the certification bodies.
