Dear Residents

2017 has come and gone in the blink of an eye. We are in the last lap of the first quarter of 2018, and it is promising so far. I am positive that 2018 will be better than last year for all of us!

Like all other years, we bade farewell to 2017 and welcomed the new year on a high! Despite the huge downpour, our residents’ spirits were not dampened, and in fact soared high that night, skyrocketing at the stroke of midnight as the magnificent fireworks shoot up into the sky!

Following the New Year, it was not long before the Lunar New Year arrived. Residents ushered in the Year of the Dog with Chinese New Year dinners and celebrations across the different divisions in our Town. It is always heartwarming to see everyone exchanging well-wishes as the community gathered for a time of feasting and bonding.

At the start of the year, we have already rolled out a few initiatives. With the involvement of many, the launch of the Sharella Project was very well-received. Also, we inked ourselves into history by becoming the first estate in Singapore to have a

playground built for the residents by the residents! Our Canberra residents went hands-on that day as they pieced all the parts together, secured the screws and built the playground together as a community.

Also, in conjunction with Singapore Art Week, we launched our very own ‘Art Month’ and were proud and excited to know that there are so many talented artists in this neighbourhood!

We are also happy to reveal the many new upgrades in our Town this year. Residents, for instance, can look forward to a new and improved Jelutung Harbour Park, with many new facilities and play equipment for all to behold and enjoy! A series of upgrading works has also been lined up at Vista Park and Gambas Zone 1. Like everyone else, I am looking forward to these fascinating changes here in our midst!

I am excited to know what 2018 has in store for us and on behalf of everyone at Sembawang Town Council, I wish you and your loved ones an abundance of wealth and health!

I like sembawang because it is quiet, peaceful and clean. I will try my best to make friends with all my neighbours, just by saying

a simple ‘hi’ when I see them.

I have never moved out from the north. I grew up in Chong Pang. when I was 14, I moved to yishun and after getting married, I moved to

CHEERInGIn 2018Spirits ran high despite a rainy start to the

Sayang Sembawang Countdown 2018. Held at the open field between North Woodlands Way and Woodlands Avenue

2 on 31 December 2017, the countdown saw residents turning up in droves, revelling in musical performances put up by youth pop bands such as MadHatter Project, Generation Federation, and 8 Ave, all in the company of family and friends. They also relived the joy of playing traditional games at booths such as Tic-Tac-Toe and Pinball.

The bands belted out popular pop songs including ed Sheeran’s Shape of You, Train’s Soul Sister, Jay Chou’s Confession Balloons and Guns N' Roses’ Sweet Child O' Mine. Dance performances by K-pop girl group Heart To Love kept the atmosphere vibrant with energy. Before the clock struck midnight, MPs of Sembawang GRC Minister Khaw Boon Wan, Minister Ong Ye Kung, Mr Amrin Amin, Mr Vikram Nair and Dr Lim Wee Kiak, PBM, led the crowd in the countdown. They sang Sayang Sembawang with the residents, as a spectacular display of fireworks lit up the skies.

“I am looking forward to improve my fitness in 2018. I have been working out in the gym and hope to achieve a new personal best in 2018,” said Rick, a resident who has lived in Sembawang for four years.

Another resident, Ong Kheng Boon, revealed that his New Year's resolution is to start a regime of eating healthily and exercising.

L unar New Year luncheons and dinners were held across each division in Sembawang GRC by residents from Admiralty,

Gambas, Sembawang, Canberra and Woodlands. This is a wonderful opportunity for our grassroots Advisors to connect with residents as they usher in the Year of Dog.

The traditional lion dances kickstarted the events to usher in wealth and prosperity. everyone was so excited at the ‘dong dong chiang’, and children were jumping and clapping to the beat! Of course, Lou Hei, or tossing Yusheng, is not to be missed for every Lunar New Year celebration! As the tossing of Yusheng symbolises wealth, we wish for good fortune for all of our residents!

Families that eat together, stay together. May our kampung spirit in the Sembawang GRC continue to flourish, and soar to new heights!

CANBeRRA

On the morning when residents came together for the same purpose, it felt like National Day had arrived early. everyone wore their red t-shirts, united as one, fixated on the sole agenda they were there for. Adults weaved through the crowd carting pieces and parts of the fixtures while the little ones rendered their help by wounding the screws in place.

The project was spearheaded by MP for Canberra, Dr Lim Wee Kiak, PBM, with support from Minister for National Development Mr Lawrence Wong and Dr Cheong Koon Hean, CeO of the Housing & Development Board. The Guests-of-Honour rolled up their sleeves and got down to work alongside the residents under the sweltering sun.

Playgrounds are an important feature in every community. According to Mr Lawrence Wong, it is a place where relationships are formed, and where parents interact while the children play.

Residents were also psyched to see the playground taking form. This project started as early as two years ago, where it all stemmed from a competition. efforts were also made to get the inputs from parents and children of nearby PCF schools on their desired playground theme.

The rubber flooring was inspired by the winning designs submitted by three students from Sembawang Secondary School. Riniharlini Bte Muhd Ibrahim, erin Charlene Harliani Binte Aman, and Nur Syahiirah Bte Danuri, together with their teacher in charge Madam Tay Pei Inn and fellow art students, even helped to paint the foot path and rubber tyres.

H ave you ever thought about building your very own playground right at your doorstep? Possibly a far-

fetched idea for some, but tucked away in a corner of Canberra, our residents actually turned that fantasy into a reality!

Buoyed by the success of umbrella-sharing initiative Sharella Project at Woodlands, Sembawang GRC adopted and implemented it at Sembawang MRT

Station. A total of 17 racks across 12 road crossings will serve residents from seven estates.

MPs for Sembawang GRC Minister Khaw Boon Wan, Minister Ong Ye Kung and Dr Lim Wee Kiak, PBM, graced the launch on 30 December 2017. Minister Ong said, “I am confident that Sembawang residents are prepared to donate and share umbrellas. Sharella will make the last-mile commute experience to Sembawang MRT Station more seamless and smoother on rainy days.”

The MPs braved the rain, walking with residents from Blk 341A Sembawang Close to the 17 Sharella nodes to deposit umbrellas sponsored by New Moon. The MPs also donated their own umbrellas. Resident Choi Yoon Weng, 82, complimented, “This is an excellent initiative to prevent residents from being drenched in the rain. Some of us may have extra umbrellas at home, yet may find it embarrassing to give away to neighbours. Depositing these umbrellas at the racks is a viable alternative.”

Meet Ron, 25, full-time head chef at The Baker’s Brothers and a resident of Sembawang GRC. Listening to his passion about this new start-up bakery, we discovered how these chocolate tarts, blueberry cheese buns and apricot custard buns made it to the bestsellers in the streets of Canberra Crescent.

A young business-minded and down-to-earth chef, Ron, 25, is the head chef of the humble bakery nestled under the new HDB blocks at Canberra Crescent — The Baker’s Brothers. Iconic for its rusty red bricks furnishing, the Baker’s Brothers looks both modern and rustic, catching the attention of many living near the block.

Q: How did The Baker’s Brothers business start?Ron:  The Baker’s Brothers is actually a very new start-up; a three-men show run by myself, my brother and his best friend. They wanted to start a business, and while exploring the market, they found that this space was out for rent. With this opportunity, they roped me in and well, here I am!

Honestly, it came to us as a surprise as well because we were just trying our luck in getting this space. We were unsure if we were going to win this bid. But after getting it, truth be told  (pauses),  we were quite lost. eventually, we sorted things out, everything started out from scratch, right from the basic ingredients in baking to renovation works.

Q: wow, that must have been a challenge! How did you all decide on a bakery?Ron: I have been in the baking industry for the last six to seven years, and this is where my interest lies. From bread, to loaves and pastries, baking is something that requires a lot of passion. In this line of work, you cannot solely focus on the pay and working hours. Otherwise, the thought of going to work every day will be tough.

I just left my previous job then, so when my partners told me about starting up a business, I thought to myself, why not? All businesses have underlying risks; I just knew I had to give it a go.

Q: what are your working hours like?Ron: My day starts at 5 am every day and I work for about 10 hours daily. That’s because we bake fresh every day, no bread in our bakery is kept overnight.

But things are looking up now. I used to work alone in the kitchen department but with an extra pair of hands in the kitchen crew now, it isn’t as stressful.

Q: That sounds like a load off your shoulders. Is there a particular reason why your bakery is in sembawang GRC?I have lived in Sembawang for the past 15 years. I grew up here and I guess I know this place better than anywhere else. Something about Sembawang just resonates with me. My business partners live in this area as well, that is why we bid for this space.

Other than the fact that rental in the neighbourhood is a whole lot cheaper, we want to cater traditional confectionery to those living nearby — for the elderly, middle-aged and some variety for the younger crowd.

Q: Are you all expecting regulars since your bakery is situated just below HdB blocks?Ron:  We hope so, but crowd flow is one of the challenges we are facing now. The business is building up but many of these residents have yet to move in. We spoke to a few of them when they drop by at our bakery while checking on their home renovation works nearby. Many told us that they will be moving in before Chinese New Year. But for now, this place is rather quiet, as you can tell (laughs).

Q: I am sure your business will get better when residents start to move in. share with us your future plans for The Baker’s Brothers.Ron: Definitely expanding the business is our ultimate plan! But not that soon. We have explored further from bread to customised cakes and other spectrum of business aspects.  What more can a bakery do?  Perhaps 3D cakes or maybe, even events. I have been trying out different things but it takes time.

Q: so where do you usually get your ideas from?Ron: Stare into empty space and think a little harder. I’m serious! (laughs) All ideas on the Internet are the same so I can’t just search a recipe online. It won’t be special. What I do is that I will do a trial and error, explore a few and keep trying and adjusting the flavour — what ingredient to add etc., this is what you have to think about. After you know what you want, get friends and families to try for final tuning. That’s how I usually do it!

Q: That’s cool! so what are the bestsellers at The Baker’s Brothers? At first we thought it is the chocolate tarts, because they get sold out the quickest! But people here have their personal preferences. People go back to what they like, and they know what they want. Chocolate tarts, blueberry cheese buns, apricot custard buns are sold out every day —  they are probably the most popular!

Like other right-brainers who are predominantly creative, imaginative and artistic, Lae was fortunate enough to employ these traits in her career. In fact, she plays a huge role in fostering these traits in our talents of tomorrow.

Lae is employed as an Art educator at Global Art Singapore, and is the main teacher at their branch in Bukit Timah. However, she had not considered teaching before, until one day when she was enlisted to teach a group of students to draw while she was working part time at the Singapore Art Museum.

Still an artist at heart, Lae would allow herself to retreat into her own imagination and isolate herself to paint whenever there is time. She loves exploring different mediums, and her inspiration largely comes from the Internet.

73-year-old Lim Choon Jin has been an artist all his life. Having been exposed to art lessons in school as a child, the passion and interest blossomed over time. His passion was however shelved as people in the older days placed more emphasis on a more pragmatic living – the notion of not being able to feed yourself with art was pretty strong back then.

While he initially served the Ministry of education (MOe) as a secondary school math teacher, he later converted to teach secondary school art after taking his Diploma in Fine Arts at LaSalle, subsequently followed by his Bachelor Degree and Masters Degree. Mr Lim then was able to focus on his full-time career as a painter after his retirement from MOe in 1998.

Having grown up in a Chinese family, he was very much inculcated with Chinese culture. But things changed after he went to LaSalle where his artistic perspective was broadened after he was exposed to Western art education, enabling him to venture out of his comfort zone to try out something different, albeit not initially accepted by the Chinese ink painting community.

To find out more about Mr Lim and his paintings, visit our blog at https://kampungsembawang.wordpress.com for the full article!

A part-time artist and massage therapist, and a father of two, Mr Suhat invests a substantial amount of time for his hobby. It might take up his sleep in the wee hours of the night, but this does not stop him from putting his imagination on canvas. We had the opportunity to visit Mr Suhat’s place, which exhibits most of his paintings in his cozy 4-room flat in the Gambas estate. His painting ‘The Beginning of Life’ was also put up in ION Art Gallery last December.

Painting mostly contemporary pieces, most of the art he does are based on what he sees and what he hears, and interpreted to meet his style of painting. His artworks are usually a comparison of the past and present.

Art is an expensive hobby as good quality paints do not come cheap. They are, however, a necessity as they can last longer.

An artist who spends an average of 2 months on each of his painting, Gambas resident Mr Abu Jalal uses his artworks to depict stories — stories that he feels strongly for and resonates with. While most of his art pieces stem from social commentaries, the stories behind every painting are often relatable and easy to digest, which makes them even more approachable. A Gold Award Winner of the UOB Painting of the Year 2018, we were fortunate to snag a few hours of Mr Jalal’s weekend to find out more about his creative works, and his passion in the arts. Ultimately, his positive outlook in life is evident and has been translated to his art pieces.

Mr Jalal knew he could draw since young, and has always come out top for any art competition since primary school. His ability to draw also helped him to fit in every environment as he constantly contributed his creative ideas and artistic production abilities.

He has always been concerned with national and global issues, and he is compelled to share these stories through his paintings.

note: Containers should be emptied and free from contaminants such as food waste. Please rinse if necessary and flatten if possible.
