FLORIDA MASTER GARDENER DEMONSTRATION/EDUCTIONAL GARDEN AWARD 1. Give a brief explanation of the scope of the demonstration garden. Please describe educational components of the garden and number of Master Gardeners involved and hours spent. Please provide a list of all Master Gardeners who participated in this project. (25 points.) The gardens include:

State-of-the-art greenhouse: It includes mechanical droop down/roll up slides for air circulation and cold protection, two types of ventilations fans, generous bench spacing for ADA accessibility, misters and drip emitters.

Nursery / shade cloth area: Plants coming out of the greenhouse are placed here to harden off. Plants raised are donated to local community groups or sold at Master Gardener fundraisers.

Vegetable garden: Different types of beds (raised, in-ground) and containers (Earthboxes, salad tables, buckets), tepees and trellises are featured here as well as rare and unusual plant varieties.

Butterfly garden: Larval host and nectar plants abound, attracting giant swallowtails, monarchs, queens, zebra longwings, skippers and yellow sulfurs.

Fountain: This area is a focal point featuring showy annuals. It is located at the south entrance to the greenhouse and is an area paved with donor bricks.

Children’s Garden: We keep little watering cans and kiddy gardening tools in our tool room for visiting children. The area includes of an “”A to Z Garden” with animal-named plants from A to Z and animal statuary. In one corner is a tunnel covered with coral honeysuckle to attract hummingbirds.

Sensory Garden: Here are plants that stimulate the senses of touch, smell, see, listen and taste. Students at the Anna Maria Island Elementary School made signage for this garden. The “see” part of this garden consists of a perennial rainbow garden and “what’s bloomin’” annuals that are changed periodically as appropriate for the time of year.

Goldfish pond: Home to a school of goldfish and one algae eater, the pond features figurines to provide shelter to frogs, and birdhouses.

Kids’ Maze/teaching area: Our wooden maze has workstations where different activities, such as treasure hunts, can be conducted. A wide variety of bromeliads sit atop the maze walls to add interest and mystery.

Fruit tree orchard: Pumelo, sapodilla, jaboticaba, lychee, Barbados cherry, mango, pomegranate and jackfruit trees were donated to our orchard by the Manatee Rare Fruit Council.

Sundial: Stand on the correct month in our life-sized sundial and your shadow will tell you the time!

Wetlands: A 1,300-gallon aboveground cistern provides water for the wetlands garden, which was designed by the Manatee County Florida Master

  • Naturalist class of 2011. It demonstrates the importance of protecting wetlands and offers planting ideas for trouble spots in our home landscapes that may be compacted, low lying or poorly drained.

57 Master Gardeners invested approximately 1,418 hours in developing and maintaining the gardens in the August 2012 – July 2013 period (see attached list of Master Gardener participants.) 2. What was the intended purpose of the demonstration garden and the actual or potential audience reached? (25 points.) The gardens are designed to teach Manatee County residents about Florida-friendly gardening principles, such as right plant/right place, using micro irrigation and to recycle. They showcase the different ways homeowners can be more successful gardeners. On the recycling end, for example, an old fountain has been repurposed as an herb garden and the garden features many different types of compost bins and rainwater capture systems. Among the many teaching events in our gardens are the popular salad table classes for those wanting to save their backs! Our vegetable garden is in full swing in time for our county fair in January, when we open our garden to hundreds of fairgoers, and let them pull up a radish or carrot to sample on the spot. One of our goals was to create a wildlife habitat. Many types of butterflies, bees, birds, frogs and other wildlife are commonly seen in the gardens. 3. How was site evaluated according to its effectiveness as an educational demonstration? (20 points.) The garden site was picked because of its location on the grounds of the Extension Office; this makes it convenient for Master Gardeners who are maintaining it and accessible to members of the public visiting our Plant Clinic. 4. What were the results of this demonstration garden? (15 points.) We have had groups of home-schoolers, children with learning disabilities, school children, and lots of Florida homeowner-gardeners participating in garden tours or demonstrations. Over 1,060 people have toured the gardens since August of 2012. During the Manatee County Fair, over 2,500 members of the public toured the gardens. 5. How has this demonstration garden helped the target audience? (15 points.) The gardens are designed and built so the homeowner can take practical ideas to their own home gardens. We have found that adults love the children’s gardens as much as the kids themselves! In addition to scheduled classes and events in the

  • gardens, Master Gardeners working in our Plant Clinic regularly use the gardens to demonstrate a horticultural principle or show a particular plant to customers. 6. A 150 word (or less) summary of your project so that we can let others know of your accomplishments. Your application will NOT be judged without this summary included. Please add a few paragraphs describing any problems you encountered or things you

might change if you were to do the project again.

The Manatee County Master Gardeners’ Educational Gardens officially opened to the public on January 31st, 2012, the fruition of years of Master Gardener plant sales and corporate fundraising activity. Construction on the greenhouse and gardens began in 2009; apart from the greenhouse and irrigation installation, all of the work to develop the gardens was carried out by Master Gardeners. The gardens are currently maintained by a group of Master Gardener sub-committees, each of which is devoted to specific areas of the gardens and the greenhouse. A new experience for us was learning to run a greenhouse. We now have a regular schedule of planned maintenance and protocols for scouting, irrigation and other cultural practices. Of special benefit has been our ability to use these facilities to propagate and harden up plants for giveaways, donations and fundraisers.
