they both replied, ’All of them, they are all ours!’ Over six hundred adults and children attended includ-ing the whole Footscray team.

Family days were held at Norton Park, Scoresby Football Oval and later at Waverley Park.

Another fund-raising effort in the early days was the Dinner Dances where up to three hundred people would attend.

The East West Club would be one of the oldest Coterie Groups if not the oldest and will continue to be a force in the Eastern and South Eastern suburbs, however we have now spread our wings all over Aus-tralia with members in every State.

I encourage the Football Club to place more emphasis on member-ship drives in other areas than just the Western Suburbs.

D uring the winter of 1983, the board of the Foot-scray Football Club de-

cided that it was time to recognise the large number of Footscray sup-porters in the Eastern and South Eastern suburbs.

Shane O’Sullivan, then General Manager, Ken Greenwood and Bill Molyneaux, both Directors at the time, felt that the time was right to form a group that could assist in fund raising for the Football Club.

It was decided to make the Mitcham Hotel, owned by Jim Ol-liver who later became a Director, the base and to name the group the East West Club.

Over one hundred people turned up for the inaugural meeting which was very encouraging. The group was addressed by Geoff Jennings, then captain of the Footscray Foot-ball Club, Ted Whitten Junior and Shane O’Sullivan and the audience was very impressed.

Geoff Verey, who was well known around the club as the ground announcer, was selected as

the inaugural President. Mike Dud-ley was appointed Vice-President, the late Val Cooper was appointed Secretary, Tom Eyval was appoint-ed Membership Officer, Wayne Williams was appointed Social Sec-retary and the late Gerry Green was appointed Editor of the newsletter.

The attendees were then asked to nominate themselves if they were prepared to provide assistance and many people stepped forward. They included:

Beryl Cox, Jennifer Lock, Val Munro, the late Colin Green, Clive Wright, Peter Ashby Geoff Gray, Joy Hodgson, Steve and Marg Pin-well and John and Lyn McSweeney.

As I could only find a limited number of records, I apologise if I have missed anyone out.

Family Days were organised and Geoff Verey recalls at the first fam-ily day he had difficulty in finding a car park at the venue, Norton Park. There was a large crowd and he asked Sue Evans and Gerry Green which crowd was ours to which

who refused to be beaten in play-ers’ milestone games and clawed its way into four consecutive finals series.

The big challenge now is to con-tinue that form and not fall back into our old ways. We’ve estab-lished a benchmark that must set the standard for the remainder of the season and beyond.

Players like Murphy, Giansiracu-sa, McMahon, Bowden and Hahn are now senior players with 50 + games under their belts and must share the load with our core group and maintain a consistent level of performance. They must set the example for our next generation in Power, Harris, Boyd, Faulkner, Cooney and Ray.

We have games coming up against Adelaide, Brisbane, Fre-mantle and Melbourne. We must set our sights on winning three of those matches and positioning our-selves for a tilt at the final eight no matter how unlikely that may seem. We cannot continue to hang our hat on excuses such as inaccurate kick-ing or being better than we were last year; we have to raise the bar and focus on winning enough games in the remainder of the sea-son to make the finals.

It was great to see Doug Haw-kins’ induction into the Hall of Fame being recognised by giving him a lap of honour prior to the St Kilda game. But why were the players who had just completed their warm up allowed to leave the field just seconds before Doug’s arrival onto the arena? Rohan Smith was the only player who remained to acknowledge Doug. A similar thing occurred prior to the Mel-bourne match with the players do-ing their warm up and virtually ig-noring the presentation ceremony for the 1954 Premiership side. These events form part of the fabric of our Club and merit closer in-volvement from our current players.

J ust when it looked as though we were in danger of falling into that same

downward spiral that took us to the wooden spoon last year, the Bull-dogs have pulled off the upset of the season by beating the all con-quering Saints at the MCG.

After a number of indifferent performances this season, which culminated in last week’s capitula-tion against Geelong, there has been criticism in the media and amongst supporters about our play-ers being ‘soft’ and seeming to lack commitment. I believe the criticism has been warranted as too often it has been left to that core group of West, Grant, Darcy, Smith and Johnson to carry the load with our second tier players not contributing consistently enough and seeming to play without much passion.

However, the players to their credit responded to the challenge and rose to the occasion against St Kilda. It was great to see their com-mitment and attack on the ball and to see them playing with some PASSION!

At last we saw signs of that club from the nineties who had spirit and a never-say-die attitude; the team who would fight its way back into games despite being goals behind,

THE REBUILT MULGRAVE COUNTRY CLUB

I n Kennel Kapers Number 4 2003 I wrote an article on the Mulgrave Country Club

and the proposed renovations. Two photographs showed what the club was like since being built in 1961 and the commencement of the re-building with the lift well promi-nent.

The club catered for Bowls, Ten-nis, Squash, Cricket, Social Golf, T.A.B. and Gaming and with the opening of Waverley Park in 1970 the club snared many patrons who would eat and drink there prior to and after the games.

One may have thought with the demise of Waverley Park business may have declined but the progres-sive board of the Mulgrave Country Club made a decision to spend $5 million plus to build a completely new club which opened in late April 2004.

The new club is exceptional and would be classed as one of the best clubs in Melbourne if not the best. It boasts two Function rooms which seat ninety and two hundred and fifty respectively and we held our Young Guns and Legends night there on June 9th. It also has a new Gaming room , a brand new Bistro

with wonderful surrounds, a chil-dren’s playroom and also a new Administration block.

In the Bistro, forty meals would normally be served but the number is now one hundred and increasing. Further additions include a Snooker Room and Darts and they are be-coming very popular.

An underground car-park holds seventy cars with a lift to all levels. By the end of 2004 there will be an improved Members bar, more car-parking, the old Gaming room will be turned into a lounge and the T.A.B is to have extensive refur-bishment. The club has over fifteen hundred full members and a further two thousand gaming members.

Our friendly Manager is Michael Silcock who was raised in Foot-scray and did his primary schooling at Hyde Street Central, Secondary schooling at University High and continued at Latrobe University where he obtained a Bachelor of Science and Diploma of Education. Michael’s junior football was with Parkside and he played senior foot-ball with the Amateurs at Latrobe University. He taught for fifteen years and then purchased and oper-ated the Camp Hotel in Ballarat which is now known as Irish Mur-phy. He then worked in hospitality at Pokies Plus Highpoint then

Philip was born on 10-10-1923 in Seddon and attended Powell Street State School in Yarraville and then

Avon Hotel Stratford

I am writing this on the even-ing after our Round 11 loss to Geelong. St Kilda have

just had their first loss for the sea-son, against the Swans, and we will be lining up against them next round.

Over the past few weeks, as our game against the then unbeaten Saints approached, I could not help but think of the three ex-Bulldogs in that unbeaten side who could not even get a game with us.

Andrew Thompson was on our rookie list in 1995. For most of that year, those in the know would pur-posely only whisper his name, so that opposition scouts would not realise what a star he was and draft him out from under our noses. But, come 1996, Thompson was back in the amateurs having been over-looked by us after all, despite the months of good press. It was ru-moured he was deemed too short or too slightly built after all, even though he had been lauded for the whole season (be it in whispered tones). Subsequently, he was picked up by the Saints, and the rest is his-tory (still unfolding weekly).

Stephen Powell was lost to us at the same time as Leon Cameron and Brett Montgomery. This is a period in our history much regretted by many of us. Powell went to Mel-bourne, to play in a Grand Final.

Not only did he get the much-coveted chance to live the dream and play on the MCG on that last day in September, he also would have won the Norm Smith Medal if the dream hadn’t gone sour and the Demons had won that flag. Now at the Saints, Powell’s career has been revived and he is set to feature in the September action again this sea-son.

Luke Penny has matured as a footballer and a person since leav-ing us at the end of 2002. He has performed creditably, holding most of the Leagues renowned forwards this season. He wasn’t ever really given the chance to develop this kind of reputation with us – in fact, he wasn’t given much of a chance to develop at all.

I think it is curious that three players who were not deemed capa-ble of playing regular senior foot-ball for us can feature in a side that was unbeaten till Round 11. I’m sure none of them are looking back with any regret. In fact, at the time I am writing this, I’m sure they are all looking forward, to next week-end, when they will get a chance to show the Bulldog supporters what they are made of. Pity they aren’t showing it to us on a weekly basis as members of our own team, not as members of a highly successful op-position.

On an entirely different note, I well recall the many years during which we had the greatest number of Brownlow Medals of any team in the League. Our current tally of nine medallists is particularly im-pressive when our limited Premier-ship success is taken into account. I believe this medallist-to-team-success ratio would not be easily replicated in today’s football. Some time over the last decade and a half, the emphasis has changed because, now, it is unusual for um-pires to award a player three Brownlow votes unless he played in the winning team. Of our four most recent Brownlow medallists only Brad Hardy and Scott Wynd can claim to have played in teams that were remotely flag contenders, hav-ing both won medals in Bulldog Preliminary Final years. In recent times we have watched the Brown-low count, expecting one of our side’s stand out, best on ground performances to be rewarded by the umpire, only to find that a member of the winning opposition side has taken all the kudos. Is it my imagi-nation, or has their been a definite change in the voting pattern since the early 1990s?

count for the past five years. I have no doubt that this quintet would be the equal of any top five in the competition. Robert Murphy has moved into the top six over the past two years and is rapidly approach-ing football maturity. There are quite a few young players who have the ability to take the next step. However, another tall marking for-ward to complement Jade Rawlings would be a real asset.

I have been critical of the Club in recent years for signing so many lightly framed players but most football experts regard this as a fal-lacy and state that lightly framed players have as much chance of becoming recognised A.F.L. play-ers as are more strongly built play-ers. The experts have converted me. Maybe it reverts back to the amount of “fight in the dog rather than the dog in the fight”.

Luke Darcy’s temporary indis-position in the second quarter in the Geelong game may prove a bless-ing in disguise because it gave a very promising player in Will Min-son an opportunity to display his wares. He will prove a good backup for Darcy and will become a promi-nent Bulldog in the years ahead. I like his strong ruck work, his ground work for a big man and his ability to jump at the centre bounce.

W hat a difference a week in football makes. After two be-

low par efforts against the Swans and Geelong, accompanied by sec-ond half fade outs which have been a trade mark of our efforts this year, we bounced back with a tremen-dous 120 minute effort against St. Kilda, the A.F.L. leaders.

I sat in an enclosure at ground level, which had been set aside pre-dominately for Bulldog supporters. In front of me on the oval fence, I had a young 20 year old wearing a Bulldog jumper with the famous No.7. He got the Bulldog chant go-ing for the whole of the second half and I am certain that opposition supporters and our players would have been well aware of the tre-mendous support that he helped generate for the Bulldogs.

What a pleasure it was to see a committed Bulldog team put in for the whole game and win the tack-ling counts. Prior to the Adelaide game, we sit 4 wins 8 losses, but I feel sure that we will improve markedly after the split round.

Our best and older players, (notably West, Johnson, Darcy, Smith and Grant) continue to per-form admirably, and it is interesting to note that this fabulous five have dominated our best and fairest

He also has a penetrating kick and kicked a nice long goal.

At the Geelong Game at Telstra, I had the misfortune of sitting be-hind a disgruntled supporter who stormed out of the ground at ¾ time, stating in rather strong terms, that “he had had enough”. I sup-pose we have all felt this way at times, but if we respect the players and love the Bulldogs, such expres-sions of disenchantment should be entirely foreign to us.

In our present situation our big-gest problem is past members who refuse to renew membership. This season we are battling to make 19,000, about 2500 to 3000 down on last year. If we are to continue to receive A.F.L. support ($1.5m this year) we must have a strong membership base. When Fitzroy went to the wall they had approxi-mately 6000 members when all oth-er clubs had at least 10,000. Their support was minimal and the A.F.L. were prepared to let them go. I know I am preaching to the con-verted, but don’t let this happen to us.

CHAPTER 17: IT ALL SOUNDS LIKE FOOTBALL THE SCENE: May 1980. The control room of the theatrette at ad agency Masius on Queens Road, Melbourne. Today the theatrette is doubling as a recording studio. In the control room are me (Noel Delbridge), Mike Brady and Masius technician Eric Read. In the theatrette, behind a mike, is Mr Football, EJ Whitten. He’s done all this before – TV, radio, live, recorded, you name it. He’s as cocky as ever and, in reception, had greeted me as he does every male, from the VFL presi-dent to the club boot studder: “G’day knackers, how they hangin’?” Mike and I have collaborated on an album of footy songs, now in the final stages of production, and Ted’s doing a favour for us. The album will feature 13 songs, one for a legend from each of the 12 clubs – Darrel Baldock (St Kilda), Peter Moore (Collingwood), Peter Hudson (Hawthorn), Polly Farmer (Geelong), EJ (Footscray), Bobby Skilton (South Melbourne), John Coleman (Essendon), Jack Dyer (Richmond), Keith Greig (North Melbourne), Kevin Murray (Fitzroy), John Nicholls (Carlton), Ron Barassi (Melbourne) plus another song dedicated to Lou Richards and his by-line, “Kiss of death”. Ted’s job is to provide one-liners sounding like ad-libs (although scripted) which can be mixed with lyrics Mike has already recorded. I’m the Bulldog fanatic- always have been – and EJ’s song sends up some of his more infa-mous on-field antics. To the tune of the scatalogical “ It all sounds like bullshit to me”, Mike counts in Ted who hears on tape:

NOW TELL ME EJ WHITTEN DID YOU EVER LET ONE RIP DID YOU EVER HELP ‘EM LIFT THEIR GAME BY USIN’ THE MONKEY GRIP

Right on cue, the legend of 321 games with the doggies, replies:

DON’T ASK ME I WOULDN’T KNOW A MONKEY GRIP FROM A SQUIRREL GRIP

“Thanks, Ted,” says Mike, “You’re a one-take wonder. That’s a wrap.” Mike Brady’s just won another fan. Years later, bulldog ruckman Luke Darcy will tell a journalist, ‘When I first came to the club, driving around with EJ Whitten was a couple of the best weeks of all time. He was hilarious. He had his song ‘It all sounds like foot-ball’ and he’d be driving around Footscray singing along with all the windows down, rocking’ along.”

W estern Bulldogs supporter and former Club director Noel Del-bridge has just written a biography of Mike Brady, the author of ‘Up there Cazaly’ to celebrate the 25th anniversary of footy’s fa-

vourite anthem. It’s called ‘Up there Mike Brady’ and Noel will donate $5 to the East West Club for every book sold to our readers. So treat yourself to a great read and help the East West Club (and Western Bull-dogs) at the same time by completing the order form that will appear in the next edition of Kennel Kapers. In the meantime here is an extract from the book to whet your appetite...

joined Sigma in the same position, however an opportunity arose at Pedleys and he joined the company as a counter hand.

One of the Locums suggested Philip do a course in Pharmacy, although he had been away from school for fifteen years and Philip accepted the challenge and quali-fied as a Pharmacist. He then re-turned to work for Petlows and later his son William joined the compa-ny, also as a Pharmacist.

Now just a little about Claire. She was born in Yarraville in 1922, attended St. Augustines Primary school and completed her second-ary education at the Catholic Ladies College in East Melbourne.

After leaving Felton, Grimwade and Duerdin, Claire joined Petlows as the Office Manager.

Philip and Claire were married on September 20th 1949 at St. Au-gustines, Yarraville with the recep-tion held at Ascot House. They were blessed with two children Elizabeth and William and two grand-children Emma and Hannah

Philip and Claire moved to Ea-glemont in 1964 and they continued to travel daily to Yarraville for work. Philip was a member of Foot-scray Rotary for many years and he

They were escorted by a destroy-er and an armed Merchant ship be-hind the City of Paris. Philip says unbeknown to many people allied ships were sunk in the Southern Ocean in the vicinity of the Great Australian Bight.

The responsibility of the Anchor Division was to patrol up and down the coast of Western Australia due to the fear of an invasion.

After the Armoured Division was disbanded, Philip was transferred to Bribie Island to work with Landing Barges.

Philip left the Army in 1946 and retuned to civilian life.

He worked again for Felton, Grimwade and Duerdin as a pricing clerk and this is where he met Claire who also worked there as a Comptometrist.

On New Years Eve 1947 they went out for the first time to the Trocadero in Footscray and the re-lationship developed. Philip left Felton, Grimwade and Duerdin and

retired in 1993 at the age of seven-ty.

Philip is a very humble person and when I asked him about his contribution to World War 2 his reply was ‘ I did nothing’. But I, like all other Australians, are thank-ful for the effort of all our troops and sadly for the loss of life that occurred to ensure our wonderful country remains as it is; and one must admit that behind every good man is a very good woman..

Philip and Claire, congratulations on your life so far and have a great fifty fifth anniversary.
