North Coast Ohio Sail and Power Squadron
Formerly Rocky River Sail and Power Squadron
What’s in a Name?
North Coast Ohio Sail and Power Squadron officially
became the new name of Rocky River Sail and Power
Squadron on August 26, 2016with a vote of the mem-
bers attending the Saturday business meeting at the Fall
2016 National Governing Board Meeting in Pittsburg,
Pa. With this change and new marketing efforts, we
hope to broaden our membership reach to new and lar-
ger areas of Cleveland.
We are starting now to make the many changes that are
necessary for the success of this plan.
In many ways, it is like starting a new squadron. The
Rules Committee will work with the National Rules
Committee to change our By-Laws to reflect our new
name and any other By-Laws changes that have been
made since 2012 when our By-Laws were last updated.
Our Treasurer will begin the process of change with the
state of Ohio and our local banks to keep everything le-
gal. We are starting the design of a new burgee which
will eventually be the design of a new logo. We are up-
dating our website and the Currents to reflect our new
name and also the new branding developed by our Na-
tional Marketing Team. This is only the beginning of
the work that needs to be accomplished. It‟s a busy and
fun time. Please contact me to volunteer to assist
with one of our committees.
Change of Watch 2017-2018 will be the year of ulti-
mate celebration.
The 50th Anniversary of Rocky River‟s Charter and the
new beginning of North Coast Ohio Sail and Power
Squadron as the new name of a continuing tradition will
be celebrated at a Change of Watch Gala. The Rocky
River Sail and Power Squadron burgee and the North
Coast Ohio Sail and Power Squadron burgee, each out-
lined with a gold band which designates 50 years of
squadron service to area boaters will be honored to-
gether at our Gala. More details later.

IT IS WINTERIZATION, BOAT SHOW AND CIVIC-
DUTY ENVIRONMENTAL CLEAN-UP TIME AGAIN
I started this article in mid-September and by the time
you receive an e-mail or snail-mail copy of The Cur-
rents it will be “time to winterize and shrink- wrap” for
sure. However, I do not like to write an article strictly
about business at hand. I like to tell a short story about
boating‟s memorable moments -- so here goes!
…and then there was the good old summer time of Au-
gust, 1970 when Louise was expecting our third child
and we went ahead and purchased our first power boat--
a 1970 19 ft. Chris Craft inboard/outboard (IO) with a
185 h.p. small block Chevy engine and Volvo outdrive.
Louise and I admired the boat at the annual Cleveland,
Ohio Boat Show downtown at the Public Hall Audito-
rium in January of that year ; the boat with a boat trailer
was on sale as a demo at Catawba Marine display.
We docked the boat at Cedar Point Marina on dock #5
for the remainder of the summer. On a week-end in
September, 1970 my two boys ages 8 and 4, ( both
wearing life jackets BTW!) took my Dad out on a boat
ride. Louise stayed at the dock, explaining she did not
want a bumpy ride and delivery of our daughter at sea.
My Dad had come over from the “old country” (as
those German old-timers used to say) on an ocean liner
having landed in Boston in the early 1920‟s with my
Uncle Gus. Neither got sea sick on the ocean crossing.
But on this day, a little NW wind and 2-4 foot waves
and especially choppy water conditions in the Cedar
Point channel along the long break-wall to the Cedar
Point light house, my Dad got a little queasy. You
guessed it! With his two grandsons observing, and he
leaning over the starboard side, Grandpy up-chucked
lunch Unfortunately so did his false teeth, but he was
quick enough to catch them before the Mosby Channel
[name on the charts] claimed them. Grand- son Jon,
who just finished playing Little League Baseball that
summer, stated “great catch Grand-Py.” Embarrassing
for my Dad, but it brought a chuckle from me. My Dad
never went for another boat ride the rest of his life.

Cleveland Boat Show West
12 — 15 January 2017
Cleveland IX Center

Educational Department Lt/C James Christman, N [email protected]
Asst: P/C James Mason, SN [email protected]
It is Boat Show time this time of the year in our North-
ern hemisphere. Fort Lauderdale, FL. kicks off on No-
vember 3rd this year. But the massive boat shows I liked
to attend, for their proximity, are the Annapolis, MD
Sailboat Show, (Current date: Oct. 6-10, 2016) fol-
lowed by the Power Boat show, (Oct. 13-16,2016) at
City Dock downtown Annapolis.
P/R/C/ of the National Educational Committee and P/D/
C Jack Hauck, SN, and I made a day trip years ago
when air travel was easier before 9/11/01 to the Power
Boat Show. We left really early from Cleveland and
flew into BWI airport. We rented a car, drove to Anna-
polis, parked in an alley to save a $20.00 parking lot
fee. I was familiar with the streets of Annapolis for
having son Jon living in Annapolis for some years. We
walked all the docks and big tents, admired “Ego Al-
ley,” crossed over a small bridge into Eastport, had
lunch at the Davis Pub, a little hole-in-the wall restau-
rant famous for their crab cakes and posted photos of all
the celebrities that have eaten there. Jack and I bonded
well together all day with boating talk.
OUR CLEVELAND BOAT SHOW IS
JANUARY 12-15, 2017, AT THE IX CENTER.
Please sign up for at least one 3-4 hour shift at our booth
on any one (or more) of the several days the show is
open. Your participation to promote our Safe Boating
Through Education campaign for 2017 is much appre-
ciated. The Boat Show is a great opportunity to promote
POWER AND SAIL to the public. I will be contacting
YOU in the next few weeks to sign up.
We must give much thanks and gratitude to our Com-
mander and to P/C Mary Glassco, AP, for taking time
from their busy daily schedules to make a day road trip
to Columbus, Ohio on Fri. 23 September, 2016, for
training and learning how to request and write composi-
tions of educational facts and figures to request Boating
Safety Education Grant money from the Ohio Depart-
ment of Natural Resources. Grant monies are used to
rehabilitate or replace our visual aids equipment or for
advertising our Safe Boating classes in the local publica-
tions. Again, thank you, Liz and Mary.
Environmentally speaking, Louise, who is a member of
the USPS National Environmental Committee, and I
went back to our old neighborhood of Bay Village on
Saturday, 24 September and helped clean up the water-
ways of Porter Creek which flowed in back of one of
our former homes there, and the BV Boat Club area.
It‟s about that time again when we put our boats to bed
for the winter. I really do hate to see the cold and snow,
but, this is Ohio.
We finished our summer ABC class with eleven folks
completing the class. Congratulations to all of them. At
this time we have an ABC long class going on as well as
a Seamanship and JN. Again Mike Zavasnik and Bob
Brown are handling the ABC, Elliott Manke is instruct-
ing Seamanship, and Jim Mason is handling the JN
work.
Have a good fall and think about taking a boating class
to sharpen you boating skills.
Continued from Pg 3 We did our walking and bending-over exercise , met
some acquaintances, and enjoyed a “freebie” lunch
provided by Bay Village Foundation. (Other sponsor
was the Bay High Project Earth Club). In North Carolina
we participated in “ NC Big Sweep”. Cleaning up
around Beaufort, N.C. boat ramp and Town Creek Ma-
rina and Taylor Creek we were amazed on what can be
found especially if done “post-hurricane”. How about a
plastic swimming pool and parts of refrigerators?!
When done with USPS „partner‟, Ocean Conservancy,
we had to track and weigh items on OC cards and report
results to the local sponsor Co-Operative Extension Ser-
vice. The results were tallied nationally and reported re-
sults told us such dire things as the debris pools in both
oceans are growing miles wide . Cigarette butts, con-
taining 37 toxins each contaminating our ground water,
are the #1 hazard, i.e. volume-wise.
To date we have completed 154 VSC‟s. We keep plug-
ging away but we need to do more. The deadline is 30
November, 2016.
Calm seas and fair winds.

Thank you!! To all who signed the petition to develop a personalized
USPS Ohio license plate... IT’S HERE!
The Ohio squadrons were successful in the final development of a auto license plate for purchase. The plate can be ordered at the BMV, and online as well for an additional $25.00. ohio.state.gov/license.
The proceeds of the license plate sales go directly to the Ohio squadrons for educational purposes. So at your next renewal, or purchase of a new vehicle, inquire about the NEW USPS License Plate!

As I came out of our home this morning I noticed that a
few of the leaves on the trees by our front door had started
to change color. That reminded me the Lake Erie boating
season will be coming to an end in a matter of weeks. In
mid-October we will move our boat from the marina in
Sandusky where it resides during the summer months to
Catawba Island Marina for winter storage. As I‟ve gotten
older I‟ve delegated more of the tasks associated with win-
terizing the boat‟s various systems to the yard personnel
where we store the boat and the rigger / sail loft that
cleans, repairs and/or replaces worn sails and running rig-
ging during the winter.
Since we store our boat outside in the yard at Catawba Is-
land Marina the final piece of the puzzle involves installa-
tion of the winter cover. For some perverse reason my wife
and I have never subcontracted this chore out to the yard
workers. (Maybe because we‟re afraid the yard would tell
us to store the boat somewhere else if we asked them to
take on this task.) Winter cover installation is, at a mini-
mum, a two day “event”. The first day we assemble the
winter cover frame work and then secure it to the boat‟s
rail stanchions with rolls (plural) of duct tape and several
hundred cable ties. While somewhat time consuming this
is not a terribly difficult part of the process. The same
can‟t be said about the second day‟s activities, i.e., unroll-
ing and pulling the canvas cover over the frame and then
draping it down over the sides of the boat. Since we store
the boat with its mast up the canvas cover is a two piece
assembly. Installation of the first piece that extends from
the bow to the mast is a relatively simple task. The same
thing can‟t said about the second part of the process which
entails lifting a bulky 100+ pound canvas cover up over
our head and onto the top of the frame and then unrolling /
stretching it from the mast to the stern. When that is com-
pleted we zip the two pieces of canvas cover together
where they join one another at the mast. The final step in
the process involves lashing the port and starboard sides of
the canvas cover with lines that go under the boat from one
side to the other. This keeps the cover from blowing off
the boat or tearing itself to pieces in a winter storm.
As you can surmise from the comments above I don‟t par-
ticularly look forward to installing the winter cover. That
having been said, I know it‟s a task that needs to be done

and done right. The same thing can be said about a num-
