Baxendale emerging as ace in Florida State LeagueAt 4-0 over five starts, D.J. Baxendale is among the leaders in the Florida State League and is blossoming into a steal for the Minnesota Twins. After an impressive career at the NCAA level with the University of Arkansas, Baxen-dale has turned heads as a professional after dropping to the 10th round in the 2012 First-Year Player Draft. Over 29.1 innings, Baxendale has allowed just six earned runs and only six walks with 25 strikeouts. D.J. is currently third in the league in earned run average at 1.84 and tied for first in wins. Baxendale has been particularly difficult to hit for left-handers. In 40 at-bats, lefties have hit just .175 against.

Injury bug bites the Miracle as disabled list expandsOn May 6, Fort Myers added Adam Bryant to the growing list of injured play-ers.The Miracle now have eight inactive players due to injury: RHP Madison Boer (hand), RHP Miguel Munoz (forearm), LHP Ryan O’Rourke (hip), C Kyle Knudson (achilles), 1B Michael Gonzales (wrist), OF Mike Kvasnicka (wrist), SS Adam Bryant (shoulder) and OF Lance Ray (back). Bryant was injured in the first inning of his first Florida State League appearance on a diving attempt in right field on May 5. In recent days, the Twins have assigned infielder Aderling Mejia, catcher B.K. Santy and outfielder John Murphy to the Miracle.

Cole Johnson flying under radar with budding careerMiracle reliever Cole Johnson doesn’t close out games with a 99 MPH fastball like Zack Jones or have the collegiate resume and high draft status of Corey Williams, but the native of Appleton, Wisc. has been just as impres-sive. Boasting a miniscule 1.29 earned run average in nine appearances, Johnson has a 1-0 record and has allowed just two runs in 14 innings. Cur-rently, the former member of the Notre Dame Fightin Irish has put together seven consecutive scoreless outings dating back to April 16. Johnson started the scoreless string by picking up a save against the Palm Beach Cardinals with two perfect innings. Johnson has 11 strikeouts and four walks with op-ponents hitting just .152 against. In 44 career minor league games, Johnson has a professional earned run average of just 1.48 in 91 games.

John Murphy earns first career hit in Miracle jerseyIn the bottom of the seventh inning of Sunday’s game vs. Tampa, Miracle outfielder John Murphy beat out an infield single for his first career hit in the Florida State League. Murphy was added to the Miracle on May 4 after the rash of injuries that has depleted the Fort Myers roster. Murphy spent 2012 with the GCL Twins and played his collegiate baseball with Jacksonville Uni-versity.
