Your investment will allow us to sustain resilient communities by providing clean water, pollution prevention, recreational opportunities and wildlife conservation within the rapidly changing environments of coastal Alabama.

Supporting the Reserve: The Weeks Bay Foundation was incorporated in 1990 as a non-profit environmental organization with a mission to support the Weeks Bay National estuarine Research Reserve. today, we remain a strong advocate of the Reserve, raising money to allow for the development of recreational and educational facilities at Weeks Bay, including interpretive displays and the boardwalks behind the Visitor Center and at the Pitcher Plant Bog. We also assist in land acquisition, stewardship, and estuarine research and monitoring activities.
Protecting Coastal Resources:The Foundation’s founding directors were instrumental in the acquisition of the 6,525-acre Reserve. In 2009, we were awarded the national designation of being an accredited land trust. We have protected over 4,000-acres of land with high conservation value in coastal Alabama extending beyond the boundaries of the Reserve. These ecologically-sensitive coastal lands provide habitat for wildlife, nursery areas for fish, shrimp and crabs, clean water for recreation, and are a necessity for sustaining healthy communities.
Providing Training and Community Education:The Foundation sponsors educational events throughout coastal Alabama. These include the Alabama Coastal BirdFest, the kid’s Fishing Day, the Weeks Bay Photo Contest, Watershed Wagon and professional workshops. The Foundation also publishes a quarterly newsletter, The Pelican Post, generates an electronic newsletter, and hosts a website, www.weeksbay.org.
