Sticky names are easy to remember, create an immediate image in your mind and are not so specific that you can’t make changes. Think Google, Amazon, Apple. Those names represent an incredible variety of products but never name them. After much deliberation and weigh in from our Board, the Gala Committee, friends and marketing and public relations professionals from across the United States (via Facebook), we chose the name Kaleidoscope from a list of nearly 65 potential names. “Life is like an ever-shifting kaleidoscope - a slight change, and all patterns alter.” By Sharon Salzberg When we were children my sister, Karen and I spent countless hours mesmerized by our kaleidoscopes. They went everywhere with us. To this day when I think of a kaleido- scope, a smile comes upon my face. The word kaleidoscope is derived from three Ancient Greek words that mean the “observation of beautiful forms.” So Kaleidoscope 2015, chaired by Marianne Frey, will be held on February 28, 2015. That brings the second change. This year our event will be held at the Waldorf-Astoria! So mark your calendars now. Individual tickets will be $175, $100 for participants. July 2014

This year is the 10th anniversary of our annual gala, and we are making some exciting changes I wanted to share with you. The first is the name of the event itself. We tasked ourselves to come up with a “sticky” name.

To this day when I think of a kaleido-scope, a smile comes upon my face. I was given an opportunity to visit with personal trainer, Anthony Dunford and Transcendent Fitness owner, Jennifer Chadwick. This gym is an encouraging and exciting place to be to achieve the goal of Fitness for Everyone through teamwork. Every topic taught in this Life Skills Workshop is made fun! Anthony and Jennifer start with about fifteen minutes of warming up and stretching before the group discusses the week’s topic. Halfway through this Lifeskills Workshop participants have learned about gym safety and etiquette, body mechanics and dietary awareness. Then Anthony demonstrates how different exercises relate to the week’s topic. Next they put the exercises and topics discussed into practice in the gym! If an individual is hesitant about an activity, the leaders improvise to find an alternative exercise that is more suitable. It was amazing to see the skills being put into action and the confidence level of everyone involved boosted in just three short weeks.

I visited on a day when Anthony was explaining that one of the simple ways to teach body mechanics is by using a medicine ball or doing jumping jacks. This helps the participants to feel and notice how the body moves. In addition, when the group covered dietary awareness he brought soft drinks and to demonstrate the negative effects soda has upon the body. Following this, he used water as a visual reminder of what it looks like to put a healthier choice into the body. After this demonstration I saw everyone consuming water. This workshop is open to all FDD Participants. Future workshops are being planned to give others a chance to gain these skills. Thank you to Anthony and Jennifer for this great opportunity!

News & Notes from the Executive Director

Thank you to the Board and Advisory Board members, Parents, Donors and Supporters who have met with me. As well as to those who will be meeting with me soon. If we haven’t had a chance to chat yet, don’t be shy—call the office and we will schedule a time! What I’ve learned about FDD so far is that we have a vibrant group of people who care about, help and celebrate each other. It’s been such great fun getting to know our participants. When you first meet them you see them in one way. (Like looking into a kaleido-scope.) And then when you get to know them you see them in another way. (Turning the kaleidoscope slightly.) It’s one of the things I like about our new gala name, Kaleidoscope—it really represents our participants. A special thanks to our intern, Virginia Boies. She just came in and immediately became helpful in so many ways. Her pleasant smile and cheerful continence are welcome additions to our office. We will miss her when she goes back to school. Until next month—Have a Great Summer!!

FDD Gone Wild at the VFW Safari Party

All kinds of animals made the scene at the annual party hosted by the Ladies Auxilliary of VFW post 7721, Cecelia Bollella and Jodi Ziajka.

A tasty menu of hamburgers, hotdogs, chips and ice cream was served by the ladies, who were rocking specially printed animal aprons to go with our safari theme. Our guests each received animal print scarves. Lions and tigers and snow leopards danced with joy and abandon to the jungle beats of DJ Willie and Gladys. Stripes and spots floated all around on balloons; all we were missing were snakes, which was fine by us! A wonderful time was had by all.

Thank you to the Ladies Auxilliary of VFW Post , Cecelia and Jodi for planning a great event. A special thank you to DJ Willie for keeping us entertained throughout the event.

We can’t wait for next year!

Member Profile: Amy Berman By Nicole Coratti

Allow me to introduce you to Amy Burman, who has been an active FDD member for six years! You will always find this girl with a smile on her face! She lives independently in Naples with her husband, Matt. Spending time with family is among her favorite things. A few interesting facts about Amy include: she likes taking trips to New York, loves country music, and enjoys watching the TV shows Switched At Birth and The Fosters. If you’re looking for Amy and can’t seem to find her, try checking the mall, movie theater or beach! On Tuesday nights you can find her dancing

with her husband and friends at Po Boys Shrimp Shack. She also enjoys FDD events like bowling and the monthly parties. Amy is thankful for the support she receives to be able participate in community activities. Thank you Amy for letting us get to know you!
