About Lahore Mental Health Association

(L.M.H.A)

Lahore Mental Health Association is Governing body of Fountain

House. It came into being in Year 1962 and was registered with

Directorate of Social Welfare Government of West Pakistan on

October 16th

, 1963 under the Voluntary Social Welfare Agencies

(Registration & Control) Ordinance, 1961. Following are the

About Fountain House

Fountain House (Institute for Mental Health) is a project of Lahore Mental

Health Association. It is a unique institution of its kind which is serving the

community from almost 41 Years in the field of mental health.

In 1965 Prof. Dr. Muhammad Rashid Chaudhry (Late), a founder member

of L.M.H.A, worked out a plan for establishment of a rehabilitation center for the

mentally ill patients in Lahore. A formal proposal entitled “Establishment of a

Half Way House and Day-Night Rehabilitation Unit for Persons with Mental

Illness” was submitted to Govt. of Pakistan. After approval by the Govt. of

Pakistan in 1968, the proposal was sent to the Social & Rehabilitation Services,

Department of Health, Education & Welfare and Govt. of U.S.A for the purpose of

technical & financial assistance.

In Year 1971Mr. Jhon H. Beard (Executive Director, Fountain House New York,

U.S.A) as a Consultant of Social & Rehabilitation Services, Washington U.S.A

visited the Rehabilitation Unit of Lahore Mental Health Association in Lahore,

Pakistan. The close relationship that developed as a result of the technical

collaboration between the two houses led to the adoption of the name of Fountain

House for rehabilitation center of Lahore Mental Health Association in Lahore.

In Year 1971 Prof. Dr. Muhammad Rashid Chaudhry (Late) started

Fountain House with only 16 members (patients) in a small building, till it

developed and shifted to its recent building. On August 13th

, 2000 after the sad

demise of Prof. Dr. Muhammad Rashid Chaudhry his son Prof. Dr. Haroon Rashid

Chaudhry (Late), also a renowned psychiatrist and philanthropist of society, took

the lead and worked day and night for the institution doubling the therapeutical

range, psychiatric care facility, mental health community services and academic

contributions in society, making it largest charitable, psychiatric treatment and

rehab facility working for 24-hours in the whole world. In Year 2012 after the

tragic and untimely death of the Prof. Dr Haroon Rashid Chaudhry (May his Soul

Rest in Peace), a Management Committee comprised of renowned philanthropists

and professionals under the leader ship of Dr. Muhammad Amjad Saqib (Sitara-e-

Imtiaz) as Chairman Management Committee have taken the charge of the projects

of Lahore Mental Health Association L.M.H.A. The institute is presently housed in

a state of the art building catering to the rehab needs of over four hundred

mentally ill persons from all over Pakistan as well Pakistani families living abroad.

It is also worth mentioning here that it is completely non smoking institution which

is again a very unique feature in the whole world.

Aims & Objectives

The aim and objectives of the Fountain House are to help the mentally ill to

regain their self-esteem, confidence and to make them become a contributory

members of the society by providing them an encouraging and sympathetic

environment.

Moreover the ideology of the Fountain House is to redress the suffering of

the patient and to restore the patient’s life in accordance with their aptitude,

capacity and capability. It is also aim of Fountain House to educate different

segments of society for prevention, care and awareness regarding the Mental

Health issues. To provide training to the mental health professional, facilitate &

host educational activities for the members (patients), staff members &

professionals from society.

Philosophy

The philosophy of Fountain House is that the facilities provided to mentally

ill were completely treatment oriented. The concept of “Rehabilitation” was

nebulous & indeed of definition with special reference to the local conditions. The

philosophy can be defined as a faith that the mentally ill must be helped to regain

their self-esteem & to become contributory members of the society. It was,

therefore further believe that any program which was planned for the fulfillment of

basic human needs had a universal frame of reference & therefore, it will be

provided valuable ground to be fulfilled.

The patients are to be called members of the House not patients as the

institution is to provide the members a homely atmosphere & the psychologists the

Tutors as they teach them skills to make a presentable personality

rehabilitation center is indeed well known to your

grace. The institute is providing psychiatric &

psychological care to thousands of mentally

dejected, stressed, stuck in the quagmire of mental

illness, severe pain, anarchy, agony and sometimes

through unconsciousness. All who could hardly help

themselves! Neither their families could. At the

same time, it is again very unfortunate that many of

members (patients) are left away at the institute by

their relatives for a unlimited time period –

Sometimes even for a lifetime…….. It is Fountain House which provides them

care/treatment, medicines, therapies, food & shelter. Undoubtedly this is because

of the philanthropists like you who gave their charaties, zakat & sadqats to the

institute and make this service possible.

Approximately 150 to 200 patients visit outdoor of Fountain House daily for

checkup. Different Professors, Consultant Psychiatrists and Doctors examine &

evaluate patients in outdoor of Fountain House. Consultants and Doctors that check

Indoor Department Male Blocks

Unit Incharge: Dr. Syed Imran Murtaza

From January 2012 to April 2012, 37 members (patients) from General Block,

Hamza Block, RKRC and BRG Block under the supervision of Dr. Syed Imran

Murtaza are rehabilitated and now they are useful persons of the society.

One of our members having brilliant academic record has passed every exam with

distinction and honor when he was admitted in our block the situation was hopeless

and prospectus were weak due to his ailment. Patient was manage with due protocol

and psychologist did their best to ameliorate his mental condition. He was in ward in

different activities keeping in views the process of rehabilitation. He remained admit

in our block for one month. Family was given follow up plan and educated above the

psychiatric disorders.

Now the current condition of the patient is that he is doing fine in his studies and

now he is again ambitious to fulfill academic pursuits.

Recent Activities

Spring Festival 2012

A function for member’s recreational

rehabilitation and enjoyment was held on 29th

March 2012 in female block of Fountain

House.

In this function only our members of

female block were participated with great

passion. They show their great interest in

participation in whole activities of function in

all respect i.e.

Mehfil E Milad

Mehfil E Milad was held on 16th

Jan 2012 at

Fountain House. That included recitation of Holy

Quran, Naat, Darood E Pak and Salam. All female

members participated in this activity. These kinds

of activities promote interest about our religion and

bring positive change in the behavior of members

(patients).

Cricket Match

Govt Fatima Jinnah College invited Fountain House (Female Members) for

cricket match on 29th

February, 2012. We accepted their invitation as it promotes

team work; discipline self confidence and decision making power.

A friendly cricket match was held between female members and students of Govt.

Fatima Jinnah College for women Chuna Mandi Lahore. Fountain House team

made 107 runs in 6 overs. Govt Fatima Jinnah College failed to chase the target of

107 score and whole team was back to pavilion for just 43 runs.

This function was arranged for female block members. These kinds of healthy

activities play a positive role on the mental and physical health of such members. It

enhances their self confidence, self esteem and will power. It promotes their quality

of life.

Institute of Disadvantaged Children (I.D.C), Jain Mandir, Lahore

Unit Incharge: Madam Ghazala Kaleem

Institute for Gifted Children is a day school for

the mentally handicapped individuals about the age

of 16 years and above. Institute was built in 1993.

It is rendering commendable services for the mentally

handicapped persons.

Its main objective is to educate and provide vocational technical education to

the mentally handicapped children with a view to their rehabilitation in the

community. It hums with the activity of such kids whose I.Q. is very low, albeit their

actual age ranges between 12 to 25 years. This factor is, in fact, the distinctive

feature of the Institute.

In all other institutions for the mentally retarded persons in Pakistan, the

upper age limit is 15 years. Most of the boys of our Institute exceed this limit. Most

of the boys use the pick & drop service by the Institute at noncommercial rates.

The educable group comprising students capable of learning any of the three

R’s (reading, writing and arithmetic) or arts and handicrafts are taught by qualified

staff under the supervision of Medical Administrator, Principal, qualified

Psychologists and trainers

Fountain House Farm, Farooqabad

Fountain House Farm Farooqabad, District Sheikhupura is another land mark in

the history of Fountain House. It is situated at Sargodha Road adjacent to “Sucha

Soda” (a religious place of Sikhs). It was felt necessary that special services for

persons from rural are who needed the setting most suited to their usual mode of life.

The agricultural farm was started in November 1982.

farming, dairy & cattle farm, teddy goat farm etc. in addition to Art & Craft training

classes under V.T.I’s. Psychotherapy & Agricultural therapy go side by side at the

Farm. State of the art treatment services are provided to the members by the Full

Time Physician, visiting psychiatrists and paramedical staff.

Six feet high pucca boundary wall has since been constructed around 18 acres of

land has made the site fool proof secure for the persons to dwell

Art & Drama Therapy Unit

Historical Background and Activities

Art and Drama Therapy started at Fountain House, Lahore whenMr. Asim

Amjad (Art Therapist and Psycho-dramatist) joined Fountain House 8 years ago.

Due to extraordinary outcomes of these therapies, Ms Sheila Hollins in February,

2007 introduced first time Art and Drama Therapy Unit in Fountain House.

For the first time in Pakistan, Art and Drama Therapy Unit introduced psychosocial

activities for the rehabilitation of its members.

Sports Therapy Unit

Unit Incharge: Mr. Raffique Masih Bhatti

Fountain House’s 42nd

Annual Sports held from 10 to 11 April, 2012 in

Fountain House Lahore. Members (patients) of Fountain House participated in

different games like cricket, badminton table tennis etc.

On the first day (i.e.10th

April, 2012) badminton, table tennis and other

indoor sports held between members of Fountain House. At the end of the day chief

guest Madam Azhara Perveen, Deputy Director, Punjab Sports Board gave the

prizes to the winners.

Cricket tournament played on 11th

April, 2012 between MS Eleven, Umair

Rasheed Eleven, Punjab Institute of Mental Health (PIMH) and Fountain House

Farooqabad Teams.

First match played between MS Eleven and FH Farooqabad. Winner of the

first match was MS Eleven.

Second match played between Umair Rasheed Eleven and PIMH. Winner of

the second match was Dr. Umair Rasheed Eleven.

Final of this tournament was between MS Eleven and Umair Rasheed Eleven.

The match ended in a draw and to decide the winner of tournament; 1-1 over match

was played between these two teams again. Dr. Umair Rasheed Eleven won this 1-1

over match by 3 runs.

In the end Chief Guest of the tournament, Mr. Zaidi (Former Test Cricketer),

distributed the prizes.





Prof. Rashid Chaudhry Drug Rehabilitation

Center (P.R.C.D.R.C)

The centre aims to be a Drug addiction treatment and rehabilitation centre

for the drug addicts in Pakistan. This offers approx 20-Beds state of the art Hospital

to provide services of the treatment and rehabilitation to the drug addiction and

related problems.

The objectives of the scheme are:

to reduce drug-related harm and improve physical and mental health

to reduce the amount of antisocial, street-based activity, such as begging,

shoplifting and drug dealing

Pakistan Psychiatric Research Center (P.P.R.C)

Pakistan Psychiatric Research Centre, a component of Fountain House, Lahore was

established with an objective of starting and initiating research work in the field of mental

health & organizing teaching & training programmes. Since its inception from early 1990s,

it has assumed a paramount importance in the field of research in the country and has

published above 58 publications based on many national and international researches

which were conducted in fountain House. It has also emerged as a centre of excellence for

organizing educational activities, conferences, symposia and other academic activities in

different fields of mental health.

International Collaboration

PPRC encourages national & international collaboration in the areas of

research, training & teaching. Projects are prepared for international collaboration

and different universities around the globe are contacted to have MOU signed to

start joint projects. This will help the local researchers to have more links with the

established centres of excellence and also encourage more work being presented at

national & international forum.

We are planning to develop a system of research support which will work

collaboratively with National and International organizations and individuals to

support research activity conducted in Fountain House and elsewhere in Pakistan.

This system will have a variety of activities spanning from the development of a

research proposal, ethical approval, implementation of a research project,

dissemination of results through conferences and publications. It will provide

training to develop skills for these activities as well as directly work with individuals

or groups to design research projects and contribute in their implementations.

Organizing Academic & Educational Conferences & Seminars

PPRC has organized a number of national, regional and international

conferences and seminars on different topics related to mental health. 2011 SAARAC

Psychiatry conference attracted a large number of delegates from the neighboring

countries. Similarly PPRC is involved in the organization of another international

conference being held in Dubai in July 2012.

Khawajasira’s Rehabilitation Project (K.R.P)

Goal: Create a society where the transgendered are treated as equal citizen without

prejudice or discrimination.

sessions are also arranged for their entertainment. At the end of programme a

special lunch is arrange for them in every programe.

Psycho Education Program

Unit Incharge: Dr. Afzal Javed & Dr. Imran Ijaz Haider

On 2nd

May, 2012 Lahore: Fountain House started a special “Psycho-

education Program (PEP)” in collaboration with World Association for

Psychosocial Rehabilitation WAPR for general public, people suffering from mental

illnesses, problems, their care givers, mental health professionals and students at

Fountain House Lahore, which will be conducted on every first Wednesday of the

month.

Dr. Mian Farrukh Hussain, Consultant Psychiatrist from UK, gave an

exclusive work shop on “coping with crisis” to the families of members (patients),

Members, staff members, mental health professionals, students and volunteers.

During question answer session with the affected families, he described in

detail the coping techniques, He appreciated the great services of the institute in the

field of Mental Health and hailed the leader ship of Dr. Amjad Saqib Chairman

Steering Committee, Dr. Umair Rashid Chaudhry member steering Committee, Mr.

Ghias ud din member steering committee and promised his great support to FH.

Prof. Usman Rashid Chaudhry Honorary Director Rehabilitation, Dr. Syed Imran

Murtaza Medical Superintendent, and other senior staff gave him vote of thanks and

presented souvenir.





Cognitive Behavior Therapy (C.B.T)

Unit Incharge: Mr. Muhammad Aslam

David Kingdon Centre for Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) was

established in 2009 in Fountain House, Lahore. This centre is joint venture of

Fountain House, Lahore and Pakistan Association of Cognitive Therapists

(PACT).This centre is providing Cognitive Behavior Therapy service to Indoor and

outdoor patients with different kind of disorders, till now we have provided this

facility to almost 70 patients which is free of cost. This Centre is also involved in

conducting research on Obsessive Compulsive Disorder using Cognitive Behavior

Therapy (CBT). Most of them benefited from this evidenced base therapy

Music Therapy Unit

Music Therapy Unit was established in 1971 by Syed Ishfaq Hussain Bukhari.

Music Therapy Unit arranges different musical functions to entertain members

(patients) of Fountain House. This Unit also conducts musical classes for those

members who want to learn music. Timing of musical classes is given below:

Spiritual Therapy Unit

The spiritual aspect of a personality and a belief system has deep roots within

which are a great source of healing and recovery. Our spiritual therapy unit studies

and conducts therapies on this amazing relationship of mental health and spiritual

studies.

Kitchen & Mess Unit

Unit Incharge: Mr. Noor Akbar

Our dedicated and trained staff has prepared and served 225,000 meals

during this six months. In the mess tasty, healthy and seasonal dishes are prepared

for the members (patients) of Fountain House. Our staff extends special meals to the

aged and physically sick members (patients). We appreciate Aksar Hussain (Head

Cook) and his team members, under the supervision of Mr. Noor Akbar, who work

hard and took 07 days to remaove bones from fish (From FHF, Farooqabad) and

prepared special Fish Kabab for all inmates of Fountain House in these winters.
