My Dear Brothers and Sisters inChrist:

One lesson this tough eco-nomic time continues to teach usis the value of community. I spokeof this in my previous column. Itis heartening to see how our com-munity of faith of over 225,000Catholics in the Diocese of Nor-wich has never been more activeand supportive, as we all strugglein one way or another with steepchallenges in so many directions. The list of problems we face as aCountry is not the news. Thenews is how we respond. I witnessevery day compassion and love ofneighbor everywhere I travel inthe diocese. “This is how all willknow that you are my disciples, ifyou have love for one another.”John 13:35

Too often lately, in this media-intense political season, I haveheard the criticism that that weare not a caring Nation – thesuggestion that the suc-cessful arese l f i sh

and not inclined to share theirblessings – that we are not a grate-ful people. I do not for a secondaccept this view. It is a point ofview that crumbles quickly whenone looks around the Diocese ofNorwich and sees the outpouringof help for those among us whomost need an out-stretched hand. Ifanything, the reces-sion has broughtout exceptionallygenerous outreachas the economic cri-sis lengthens eachday. We are right there for ourbrothers and sisters as called byJesus to serve the needs of others.

Recently, I had the pleasure ofattending the Annual CatholicFoundation of the Diocese ofNorwich Awards Dinner. Over270 Catholic school students and

families were invited to

be there to receive tuition assis-tance grants along with a numberof diocesan schools and ministrieswho received grants. By the endof the dinner, the Catholic Foun-dation had granted $308,000 tohelp families and ministries workthrough a very difficult time. All

made possible by the kind andgenerous donors who establisheda perpetual fund to help manyfamilies for years to come. Howcould the Academy Awards or anyself-congratulatory event possiblycompete with a dinner of purposesuch as the Catholic Foundation

night? Not possi-

ble. The Catholic Foundationdefinitely hosts the best awardsnight of the year.

Besides the extraordinary goodwork of the Catholic Foundation, there is a network of other vitaldiocesan ministries that day andnight answer the call to serve

those in need. Tofully comprehendour faith in action,we need to considerthe remarkable con-tributions ofCatholic Charities. In the toughest of

times, Catholic Charities providescritical social services in the areasof basic human needs, adoption, mental health, family life educa-tion, pregnancy services and im-migration assistance. “Providinghelp, creating hope” is what thisamazing ministry does every dayfor Catholic and

non-Catholic families in the fourCounties we serve.

Catholic Charities is funded inlarge part by the Annual CatholicAppeal (ACA), as are many of ourfront-line ministries. On behalf ofall those families and individualswhose lives have been lifted by theministries’ efforts, I am deeplygrateful to each person behindeach contribution to the ACA.Your gifts are working very hardon your behalf to help stabilizethe lives of others and help themmove through hard times towardself-sufficiency – with their dig-nity preserved.

The same principle of caringfor each other as we are called todo, is uniquely present in theprison ministry. I am always im-pressed when I visit the Corrigan-Radgowski Correctional Centerand see the hope that the “Gift ofGrace” volunteers bring to the

Our soup kitchens and foodpantries at St Vincent dePaulPlace in Norwich and St. VincentdePaul Middletown are servingmore meals and delivering moregroceries than at any time in theirhistory of community service.Project Northeast has also beenseeing similar increased activity.

The kindness and generosity ofall contributors extends beyond

the diocesan geographic bound-aries, most notably the 30 years ofoutreach to Haiti, the poorestamong us in the Western Hemi-sphere. The Outreach to Haiti ofthe Diocese of Norwich Ministryworks locally with twinnedparishes and on the ground inHaiti to bring Christian hope andlove to our brothers and sistersseparated by miles, but close to usspiritually.

So when we hear politicians ormedia pundits suggesting thesedays that we are not a sharing andcompassionate people, I wouldrecommend that they check withthe Diocese of Norwich where weare letting faith lead the way to apromising and hopeful place.

God bless your Christian spiritand your generous concern foryour brothers and sisters here inthe diocese and beyond.

Sincerely yours in Christ’s love,

Last October 11, 2011, ourHoly Father Benedict XVI an-nounced through an ApostolicLetter the celebration of the Yearof Faith which will begin thiscoming October 11, 2012 and gothrough November 24, 2013.

In last month’s Four CountyCatholic, Bishop Cote wrote thatthe goal of the Year of Faith is, “toencourage Catholics to activelyrediscover our faith and gener-ously share the saving truth of theGospel at a time calling out fordirection and purpose”.

For those who have not beenaware of this coming spiritualyear dedicated to our Faith, Ithink it’s also important for youto know that this year of prayerregarding our faith occurs on thefiftieth anniversary of the open-ing of Vatican Council II, and thetwentieth anniversary of the pub-lication of our now current Cate-chism of the Catholic Church.

How can this great upcomingopportunity to reflect on ourfaith affect us? First I think we

must realize, acknowledge and acton what Pope Benedict writes re-garding what the Year of Faith is;“The Year of Faith… is a sum-mons to an authentic and re-newed conversion to the Lord, the one Saviour of the world”.

In other words, we must AN-SWER THE CALL to activelyrenew the gift of faith that wehave been given both individuallyand together as the Church. Theneed for that renewal is very im-portant right now in this Coun-try and time.

Below are some suggestionsabout what we all could do to ac-tively make the Year of Faith atime for great personal conver-sion and growth in our relation-ship with God and with eachother. • Step one always must be an act

of conversion – the best way isto receive the all powerful graceof Divine Mercy in the sacra-ment of reconciliation. Try togrow this as a more consistentpart of your prayer life.

• Devote more time to develop-ing your relationship to Christin the Eucharist: try to makedaily Mass once or twice a weekpraying for the strengthening ofyour faith. Make a weekly ormonthly visit to Adoration ofthe Blessed Sacrament.

• Purchase a copy of the Cate-chism of the Catholic Churchand make a goal to read slowlythrough it during the Year ofFaith. Write down questionsyou have and search out theiranswers.

• Commit to attending theMonthly Holy Hour for Voca-tions that Bishop Cote leadseach month in a differentparish in the Diocese.

• Read about Vatican Council IIto enhance your understandingof Church and your faith.

• Commit to building a moreregular, daily, prayer life appro-priate for your state in life.Maybe seek out the advice of aspiritual director or your ownparish priest or a consecrated

religious.• Continue to pray for more

priestly and religious vocationsfrom our diocese and yourparish community.Hopefully as we each respond

to the call of the Lord to re-com-mit ourselves to growing in faithand holiness during this comingYear of Faith, we will each becomegreater and more open instru-ments of His Love in the world.

We are extremely grateful for theprogress we are all making as a com-

munity of faith with the

Annual Catholic Appeal. As of Au-gust 17, 2012, $2,968,716 has beenpledged. Having now reached Sep-tember, we are entering the finalmonths of the campaign. This is thestretch run as we try our hardest toreach this year’s goal in each parish. If you have given to this life-sup-porting cause in our diocese in thepast but not yet this year, pleaseconsider that the needs of those we

will be helping are even greater inthese tough economic times. Pleaserealize your contribution counts somuch.

As Catholics, we are called to begood stewards. As individuals, wegive because we are moved to do so.Perhaps it warms out heart to helpthose in need. Perhaps we feelblessed and as a result want to shareour good fortune. Or, perhaps wefeel it is the right thing to do. Just aspeople have good reasons for giving, some feel they have good reasons fornot giving. They may have lost theirjob, be facing financial burdens, orthey may have simply forgotten tofill out the envelope. What is most

important to convey to those whohave given this year and given in thepast is our heartfelt thanks.Whether you have made yourpledge to the Annual CatholicAppeal or are still consideringmaking your pledge, pleaseknow that we are extremelygrateful for your participation.

It is thanks to those whohave given that our Office ofFaith Events was able to takethe lead in a Habitat for Hu-manity Build, putting a roofover the head of a young motherand her children. It is through yourgenerosity that pastoral care is pro-vided to sick and dying patients and

their families. It is through yourgenerosity that a child who couldotherwise not afford to attend

Catholic school is able to receivescholarship assistance. It is throughyour generosity that those who areimprisoned are introduced to the

light of Christ. Your generositymakes all this possible!

Everyone’s participation matters. All gifts are important and weask that you please considermaking your gift to the 2012Annual Catholic Appeal. September 19 marks the last dayof work for Catholic Charities Ex-ecutive Director Marek Kukulka,

who had served at the human serv-ice agency since June 1, 2005.Last month, the FourCounty Catholic satdown withKukulka to dis-cuss his tenure atthe charity or-ganization.

Several signif-icant changescame to be at theagency underKukulka’s oversight. All changes were to en-sure that the agency operateaccording to Catholic teachingsand laws.

“The Board of Directors and theMost Rev. Michael R. Cote,Bishop of Norwich, presented tome what they wanted out of thecandidate they were going to hire.Bishop Cote wanted faithfulness tothe Church by the candidate andwanted the agency to have a mis-sion that adhered to all teachingsand laws of the Catholic Church,”Kukulka said.

“They wanted us to be the bestthat we can be in human services. They wanted us to be in the com-munity, visible and recognized as aCatholic institution that wouldhelp people regardless of whetherthey could pay for services or not.”

Kukulka said he jumped in with

both feet and worked on develop-ing a deeper Catholic identity as anagency – holding staff trainings, orienting staff to the mission ofCatholic Charities. He made surethe building’s walls held crucifixes

and other Catholic icons sopeople coming in would

recognize thatyes, this is a

Catholic agency.“An enhanced, clear

Catholic agency lets thecommunity know we have highstandards,” said Kukulka, stressingthat professionalism was also highon his agenda for change. Kukulkasaid under his leadership theagency was reaccredited twice, which allows the agency to get fi-nancial assistance from the State.

“Coming to Catholic CharitiesI felt much supported by the Boardof Directors and the Bishop, to besuccessful in making the changesthey wanted. They made my jobeasy, enjoyable and successful,” hesaid.

Several moves were made in theyears Kukulka served as director.Offices in New London and Willi-mantic were moved to be more ac-cessible for people to get to. Mostrecently an office in Middletown

was opened.Catholic Charities’ first behav-

ioral health clinic opened in Nor-wich; then came New London andmost recently, Middletown. Theseclinics offer the same level of careas other non-Catholic agencies.

During Kukulka’s direction,

Catholic Charities established im-migration services 2 years ago inNew London. That program is rec-ognized by the US Dept. of Jus-tice’s Board of Immigration

Appeals. “We’re the only program in the

area. No one else can do it,” hesaid.

The housing program, whichhelps with foreclosures, has grownfrom 120 families per year, to1,300 this year. “We can’t always

change the situationbut we can offer sup-port to those goingthrough it,” saidKukulka.

According toKukulka funding hasgone down for every-

body, as well as for Catholic Char-ities. “But we’re able to maintainour services with the help of theDiocese of Norwich. That meansthe people in the pews who sup-

port the Church.”Kukulka got a little sentimental

taking about leaving the Diocese ofNorwich. “I have mixed feelingsabout it, sad and excited,” he said.

“This has not been my successalone,” he said. “It’s the employeesand the governing board. They allmade me look good.

“It’s been a very rewarding expe-rience for me. It’s made me readyto take the next step in my career.”

The next step for Kukulka takesplace Sept. 20 when he starts work-ing as director of Catholic Chari-ties of the Archdiocese of Hartford.

“This is a wonderful place towork,” he said of Norwich.“There’s a good governing boardand the new candidate for the jobwill come in accepted.”

Washington, DC -The ObamaHHS mandate requiring that em-ployers cover abortion drugs, contra-ception and sterilization in the healthinsurance plans took effect August 1,

2012. Paul E. Rondeau , executivedirector of American Life League, is-sued the following statement:

The president’s HHS Mandate re-defines and marginalizes religious

freedom in favor of government ide-ology. History tragically teaches usthat if our government can abolishone constitutional right, then allconstitutional rights are put in jeop-

ardy. This path sets a dangerous andfoolish precedent that First Amend-ments rights such as freedom ofspeech, association, freedom of thepress, and the rights to assemble and

petition the government may be justas easily curtailed in the future.

We call on all citizens to tell theirelected representatives that this ero-sion of rights must not stand.

The HHS-Mandate BattleOn August 8, President Obama

spoke to an audience of women inDenver. They provided the perfect

backdrop for his charge that Gover-nor Romney is waging a “war onwomen.” The president spoke ofhow Obamacare has made “contra-ceptives” even more available thanthey were before — though he didnot mention that “contraceptives,”as he defines them, include medica-tions that do not prevent concep-tion but instead cause the death ofnew life after it is formed. He alsoclaimed the following: “Listen, werecognize that many people havestrongly held religious views on con-traception — which is why wemade sure that churches and otherhouses of worship — they don’thave to provide it. They don’t have

to pay for it. We worked with theCatholic hospitals and universitiesto find a solution that protects bothreligious liberty and a woman’shealth.”

The president could not have for-gotten that on May 21 there begana confrontation between churchand state unlike any in Americanhistory. Forty-three Catholic insti-tutions filed twelve lawsuits intwelve federal courts seeking reli-gious exemption from a Health andHuman Services regulation imple-menting Obamacare. This regula-tion requires employers to providetheir employees with medical insur-ance that includes coverage forabortion-inducing drugs (known as“abortifacients”), contraceptives, and sterilization. Such coverage iscontrary to Catholic Church teach-ing. The abortifacient requirement

is also contrary to the teachings ofmany Protestant and Jewish organ-izations.

The plaintiffs in these lawsuits arediverse; they include archdioceses, dioceses, schools, hospitals, clinics,a nursing home, a publishing com-pany, and the Michigan CatholicConference. The plaintiffs and theircounsel understood what was atstake. If the government could re-quire them to provide their employ-ees with abortifacients, it couldrequire them to provide surgicalabortions as well.

Some of the plaintiffs had beenmisled by President Obama himself.

In his interview with the WallStreet Journal, Cardinal Dolan ex-plained after having met with Pres-ident Obama, that “So you canimagine the chagrin, when [thepresident] called me at the end ofJanuary to say that the mandates re-main in place and that there wouldbe no substantive change, and thatthe only thing that he could offerme was that we would have untilAugust. . . . I said, ‘Mr. President, Iappreciate the call. Are you sayingnow that we have until August tointroduce to you continual concernsthat might trigger a substantive mit-igation in these mandates?’ He said,‘No, the mandates remain. We’remore or less giving you this time tofind out how you’re going to be able

SCHOOLS WITHIN THE DIOCESE

For anyone who believes thatthe battle over the Department ofHealth and Human Services’“contraception mandate” is sim-ply the Catholic Church vs. theObama administration, considerWheaton College.

Last month, the Christian lib-eral arts college in Wheaton, Ill.,joined Catholic University in alawsuit filed against HHS. Nu-merous Catholic organizationshave already brought suit to chal-lenge the requirement that privateemployers offer contraceptioncoverage to their employees as astandard health insurance benefit.

These organizations — manyof which self-insure — believethat subsidizing or facilitating theuse of contraception would vio-late a core teaching of Catholic

doctrine. But last month, theChristian liberal arts college inWheaton, Ill., joined the lawsuit.

The Wheaton lawsuit is signif-icant because the school has longbeen regarded as a flagship collegeof Protestant evangelicals. Byjoining the fight, Wheaton signals

to evangelicals that the contracep-tion mandate is not just “aCatholic thing,” but a threat totheir freedom as well. The lawsuithighlights that the mandate re-quires coverage for “abortion-in-ducing drugs” as well as“contraception”.

to comply.’” Cardinal Dolan latersaid, “The president is saying wehave a year to figure out how to vi-olate our consciences.”

The Religious Freedom Restora-tion Act of 1993 (RFRA) preventsthe government from substantiallyburdening the religious freedom ofany person or entity unless the gov-ernment has a “compelling” interestin doing so and the government’sinterest is advanced through themeans that are the “least restrictive”of religious freedom. It almost cer-tainly requires exemption for theplaintiffs and similarly situated en-tities and individuals.

First, there can be little doubtthat requiring employers to arrangefor insurance that provides benefitsthat they find morally objectionableconstitutes a “substantial burden”on their religious exercise. TheObama administration effectivelyconceded this by including in thehealth-care law a religious exemp-tion for employers in the Anabaptisttradition (primarily Amish andMennonite); an exemption forMedi-Share, an Evangelical Protes-tant cost-sharing cooperative; and anarrow religious exemption forchurches.

Second, under standard RFRAanalysis as articulated in Gonzales v.O Centro Espirita Beneficente

Uniao Do Vegetal(2006), a courtassesses whether the government’sinterest is compelling in relation toits need to force a particular organ-ization or person to comply with alaw, not the value of the law’s overallobjective (in this case, to increase theavailability of abortifacients andcontraceptives). This will makethings difficult for the government, given that it has exempted plenty ofparticular organizations already:other religions as described in theprevious paragraph, employers with“grandfathered” plans, and employ-ers with fewer than 50 employees. All told, the exemptions the admin-istration has given affect millions ofemployees. Why is it necessary toforce the plaintiffs in these lawsuitsto provide contraception, but notnecessary to force millions of otheremployers to do so?

The administration is delayingmost of these cases until after theelection by making “ripeness argu-ments” — that is, because the ad-ministration has postponedimplementation requirements formost ministries, it can argue thatthere is no current controversy to lit-igate. Procedural delay, however, was not available in the Hercules In-dustries case. On July 27, 2012,Judge John Kane of the UnitedStates District Court in Denver ap-

plied RFRA and issued a prelimi-nary injunction enjoining the im-plementation of the HHS mandateagainst Hercules Industries, a for-profit business managed accordingto the values of its Catholic owners.Judge Kane reasoned, in part:

A law cannot be regarded as pro-tecting an interest of the highestorder when it leaves appreciabledamage to that supposedly vital in-terest prohibited. . . . “The govern-ment has exempted over 190million health plan participants andbeneficiaries from the preventivecare coverage mandate; this massiveexemption completely underminesany compelling [governmental] in-terest in applying the preventive carecoverage mandate to [Hercules In-dustries].

Accordingly, even if PresidentObama is reelected, it is quite likelythat, some time after the election, there will begin a series of decisionsfavorable to the various plaintiffs, including awards of attorney’s feesagainst the government that RFRAprovides to prevailing plaintiffs. This raises the question as to whythe administration has picked thisfight it is almost sure to lose.

Anaheim, Calif. – As more than2000 Knights of Columbus and

their family members gathered for

the organization’s 130th Interna-tional Convention – together withmore than 80 archbishops and bish-ops, including 12 cardinals, andscores of clergy – the Pope praisedthe organization’s work for religious

liberty. At a time when Catholics in the

United States face unprecedented at-tempts by the federal government tolimit First Amendment religious lib-erty, the Pope has applauded and en-couraged the work of the Knights ofColumbus to protect Americans’ re-ligious freedom.

In a letter, signed by the VaticanSecretary of State Cardinal TarcisioBertone, Pope Benedict XVI ex-pressed confidence that the Knightswill take a leadership role in leadingthe laity “to counter reductive secu-larism which would delegitimize theChurch’s participation in public de-bate about issues which are deter-mining the future of Americansociety.”

The Knights – led by SupremeKnight Carl Anderson – have beenactively involved in the defense of re-ligious freedom, speaking out pub-

lically in the face of proposed limitsto First Amendment rights includ-ing the HHS Mandate. That regu-lation seeks, with only the narrowestof exemptions, to force employers tocover medical interventions whichare contrary to Catholic teaching.

The letter expressing the Pope’ssentiments states: “At a time whenconcerted efforts are being made toredefine and restrict the exercise ofthe right to religious freedom, theKnights of Columbus have workedtirelessly to help the Catholic com-munity recognize and respond tothe unprecedented gravity of thesenew threats to the Church’s libertyand public moral witness. By de-fending the right of all religious be-lievers, as individual citizens and intheir institutions, to work responsi-bly in shaping a democratic societyinspired by their deepest beliefs, val-ues and aspiration, your Order has

proudly lived up to the high reli-gious and patriotic principles whichinspired its founding.”

Supreme Knight Carl Andersonnoted: “The message from the popeto the Knights of Columbus is clear. We must continue to stand up forour religious liberty and to point theway for our fellow Catholics to dothe same. Defense of religious libertyhas long been a part of the Knightsof Columbus history – dating backto our defense of Catholic educationfrom the Ku Klux Klan in the1920s. We are honored by thepope’s encouragement and confi-dence in our work, and will con-tinue to do all we can to protect theFirst Amendment rights of allAmericans from laws and regula-tions that would encroach on thefirst freedom guaranteed in our billof rights – the freedom to practiceour religion.”

GROTON = Standing side-by-side in their green vestments and

holding their hands

over the chalice, Father DariuszDudzik, pastor of Sacred HeartChurch in Groton, and Father JeanReginald Joachim, pastor of theparish at St. Pierre in Grand Bois,Haiti, celebrated three Masses withthe parishioners of Sacred HeartChurch on August 18 and 19.

United together, the two priestsof these twin American and Haitianparishes also greeted churchgoers inafter-Mass receptions, enablingmembers of Sacred Heart to get toknow the pastor of the Haitianparish they have been financially as-sisting for the past 20 years.

Long ago, the two parishes“twinned,” or joined forces, and Sa-cred Heart committed to sending a

small, ongoing monthly stipend tohelp support the ministry andschool in St. Pierre. However, dur-ing all that time the two parish com-munities never actually met — untilSacred Heart recently extended aninvitation to Father Joachim to visit.

For his part, Father Joachim wasthrilled to be invited to Groton. “Iwas very happy to receive the newsbecause I was eager to visit thisparish,” Father Joachim said in hisnative Creole through an inter-preter.

Patrick White, co-chairman ofSacred Heart’s three-member HaitiCommittee said this visit has been along time coming. “We have beenpushing to make the connectioncloser,” White said. “Everyone waswondering what happened after theearthquake.”

Fortunately, the area of St. Pierre,Grand Bois, located just 40 milesnortheast of Port-au-Prince, sus-tained only minor damage during

the earthquake of 2010. But thechallenges of deep poverty still re-main in this rural community, which is a four- to six-hour drivefrom Port-au-Prince over rocky dirtroads through mountainous terrain.

Members of Sacred Heart’s HaitiCommittee were relieved to hear theparish remained intact, but theywondered what more they could doto partner with their twin church toattend to its needs. “Our goal was totry and meet with the pastor inHaiti and find other ways to helphim,” said George Gorton, also co-chairman of Sacred Heart’s HaitiCommittee.

“Any little thing that we can do asa Country, as a parish, or as an indi-vidual is appreciated,” Gorton said.“We need to make the effort.”

During Father Joachim’s 5-daytrip to Groton, the Haitian pastorwas treated to lunch and dinner atparishioners’ homes as well as toursof the church, the attached Sacred

Heart School, and the surroundingneighborhood, which includesmany single-family and multi-fam-ily homes and the nearby ElectricBoat shipyard.

During Mass, Father Joachim de-livered the homily and thanked Sa-cred Heart parishioners for all theirhelp and prayers. “To share and tothank is essentially the word oftoday,” Father Joachim told the con-gregation through an interpreter.“I’d like to take this opportunity tothank this parish for all their help inthe past.”

The Haitian father described hishomeland as a country of politicaldivision. “But the people in Haitihave faith,” he stressed. “They loveto pray. That’s how they live life.” Helater noted that he serves 200 to 300attendees at Mass each weekend inhis rural community.

“Once you arrive at my parish, there are two things you will notice:You will discover the poverty and

the smiles on people’s faces,” he said. Most families are joyful, Father

Joachim said, despite the fact thatthey have five or six children to feedand educate, their farming success istotally dependent on the amount ofrainfall, they have no electricity, andthe nearest hospital is three to fourhours away.

Father Joachim admitted that hesometimes feels overwhelmed by hispeoples’ great need. “As a priest wholives among them, I need to helpthem morally, spiritually and eco-nomically.” But he says he doesn’thave the resources to help them fi-nancially.

“We have a school in our areathat is 100 years old,” FatherJoachim said. Some of the 120 stu-dents are educated in the school, while others are educated in thenearby church, which often createsconflict when the space is alsoneeded for church events.

“I have two projects I’d like to re-alize,” Father Joachim said. “I’d liketo add two more classrooms to theschool and I’d like teachers to havea better salary.” He also noted thatwhile many parents cannot affordthe cost of schooling, it costs only$30 in U.S. dollars to educate oneHaitian child for an entire year.

In response to the Haitian father’svisit, Sacred Heart has already pur-chased school supplies for the Hait-ian children for the coming schoolyear.

Sacred Heart in Groton Welcomes Haitian PriestFrom Its Twin Parish in St. Pierre, Grand Bois

Outreach to Haiti collaboratedthis spring with the Haitian govern-ment and U.S. officials to vaccinate

more than 25,000 children in theChrist Roi community of Port-au-Prince.

Because of Out-reach’s long-standingrelationship with thecommunity, the Hait-ian government ap-proached us to helpreach children, from in-fancy to age 9. The staffat Outreach’s Sr. AnnWeller Clinic werehappy to help.

Haitian and U.S. of-ficials togetherlaunched the nation-wide vaccination cam-paign that seeks to curbor prevent the spread ofinfectious diseases. TheU.S. Secretary of Health andHuman Services, Kathleen Sebelius, along with the director of the Cen-ters for Disease Control and Preven-tion and international providers, helped the Haitian governmentlaunch the vaccination program, which includes inoculations to pre-vent to measles and polio.

As part of Outreach’s existingCommunity Outreach Program, four health agents regularly performhome visits throughout the neigh-borhood of Christ Roi, where theymonitor health and nutrition andprovide public health informationto families.

While working with the two-

week vaccination campaign inChrist Roi, each community healthagent took responsibility for spread-ing the word throughout a four- tofive- mile radius, where they spokewith residents about the free shotsavailable for their children. Once theword was out about the campaign

and the day of the clinic arrived, families began lining up outsideOutreach’s Sr. Ann Weller Clinic, where the vaccinations were admin-istered by our staff.

Mothers traveled for miles withsmall children to get to the clinic.Children received vaccinationsagainst measles, mumps, rubella andpolio, as well as oral worm medica-tion and vitamin A.

Haiti has the highest rates of in-fant, under-5-years and maternalmortality in the Western Hemi-sphere. Some 60 per cent of peoplelack access to basic health-care serv-ices. Haitian children and adults dieevery day from treatable illnesses

such as diarrhea, malaria, tuberculo-sis, hepatitis, and cholera.

While fewer than 44 percent ofthe target population in Haiti re-ceives recommended immuniza-tions, the percentage of populationvaccinated in the Christ Roi com-munity has far surpassed that

amount, thanks in partto the work of Out-reach’s clinic over thepast two decades. Col-laborative efforts likethose in the April vacci-nation clinic are centralto the ongoing effort toimprove the health ofchildren and families.

“This is an enor-mous step forward forHaiti,” said Thomas R.Frieden, director of theCDC&P. “This is a bigdeal.”

During the two-week vaccination cam-paign, in the month of

April alone, approximately 10,000children were served at Outreach’sclinic. Of those 10,000 children,3,072 received measles, mumps, rubella, vaccine, and 3,137 receivedpolio vaccines. In addition to thesevaccinations, 2,299 were given theoral de-worming medication, Al-bendazole, and 1,625 children weretreated with vitamin A.

To learn more about Outreach toHaiti’s Medical Program, which in-cludes a primary care clinic with lab-oratory and pharmacy, communityoutreach, public health education, and nutrition programs, please visitwww.outreachtohaiti.org/pro-grams/medical.

During his stay, Father Joachimalso mentioned that he needed someitems for Mass, which caused FatherDudzik to clean out and donate anold chalice, a monstrance, and somepriestly vestments to his gratefulHaitian counterpart. “We foundsome treasures,” Father Dudzik said.

In addition, members of the Sa-cred Heart prayer shawl ministry

contributed 15 prayer shawls thatwere laid on the altar and blessedduring the 11:00 a.m. Mass. Aprayer written in both English andCreole was printed and attached toeach shawl. Parishioners also sup-plied numerous hand-made rosaries.

Father Joachim clearly enjoyedthe one-on-one meetings with con-gregation members during the re-

ceptions. His face lit up as he shookand held people’s hands and listenedto their questions through the inter-preter.

When asked what he will remem-ber most about his visit, FatherJoachim said, “I learned the mosthow they accepted me with openarms, embraced me, and gave megood treatment.”

The National September 11 Me-morial and Museum’s planned pres-entation of the World Trade Center

cross-shaped steel beam, which be-came a famous Ground Zero symbolright after the September 11 attacks,is being legally challenged by anatheist group.

Last year, American Atheists suedthe museum for the cross’ removal, arguing that the steel beam pro-moted religion. Its legal director,Edwin Kagin, argued that the displayrepresents “a violation of both federaland New York law in that publicfunds will be used to establish theChristian religion on public land.”

Last month, as previously reportedby The New York Post and The NewYork Times, the museum filed court

papers to have the lawsuit thrownout.

American Atheists’ president,David Silverman, characterized thedisplay as “a clear instance of a viola-tion of the separation of church andstate in its extreme.”

When contacted by CBS News, the museum said it had no com-ments on Silverman’s claims. As re-ported by other media outlets, themuseum in its court filing character-ized itself is an “independent non-profit corporation.” It called the crossan “important and essential artifact”that “belongs at the World TradeCenter site as it comprises a keycomponent of the re-telling of thestory of 9/11.”

Michael Moreland, vice dean andprofessor of law at Villanova Univer-sity School of Law in Pennsylvania,

said there are two issues presented inthis case. “If the court agrees with theMuseum that it is a private non-profit organization,” Moreland toldCBS News, “then the museum willwin because a private party can’t vio-late the Establishment Clause - onlythe government can.

“It appears based on the argu-ments of the lawyers of the mu-seum,” he said, “they’re arguing frompretty solid ground - that a museumcannot be prohibited from display-ing a historical item merely becausethe item has religious significance oris in viewed with religious signifi-cance by others. I think the lawyersfor the museum were also right tocondemn this as an attempt to revisethe very history of the site by tryingto keep the 9/11 cross out of the mu-seum.”

WASHINGTON - People offaith stand with people who’vebeen left behind and should seekeconomic renewal that makesworkers and their families a cen-tral concern, according to the an-nual Labor Day Statement fromthe Committee on Domestic Jus-tice and Human Development ofthe U.S. Conference of CatholicBishops (USCCB).

“Millions of Americans sufferfrom unemployment, underem-ployment or are living in povertyas their basic needs too often gounmet. This represents a seriouseconomic and moral failure forour nation,” wrote the commit-tee’s chairman, Bishop Stephen E.Blaire of Stockton, California, inthe statement, Placing Work and

Workers at the Center of Eco-nomic Life.

Bishop Blaire citedthe 12 millionAmericans offi-cially unem-ployed, them i l l i o n smore whoare under-employedor whohave givenup lookingfor work, 10million “work-ing poor” fami-lies, and 46 millionpeople, including 16 mil-lion children, living in poverty asa sign of a broken economy. He

cited the words of Pope BenedictXVI, who said poverty often

“results from a viola-tion of the dignity

of human work,”either because

of a lack ofjob opportu-nities or be-cause, inthe wordsof PopeJohn Paul

II, “low valueis put on work

and the rightsthat flow from it.”

According toBishop Blaire, the “terrible

human costs” of a broken econ-omy include workers being ex-ploited or mistreated, stagnant orfalling wages, and stress on fami-lies. As a result, “many employeesstruggle for just wages, a safeworkplace, and a voice in theeconomy, but they cannot pur-chase the goods they make, stay inthe hotels they clean, or eat thefood they harvest, prepare, orserve.”

“An economy that allows thisexploitation and abuse demandsour attention and action,” wroteBishop Blaire. He noted that thebishops work to provide hope andhelp to exploited workers throughprograms such as USCCB Migra-tion and Refugee Services and theCatholic Campaign for HumanDevelopment, but said that“everyone and every institution”in society—businesses, govern-ment, unions and private institu-tions—should collaborate tosupport workers and create aneconomy “that serves the personrather than the other wayaround.”

“This Labor Day, millions ofworking people and their familieshave urgent and compellingneeds,” Bishop Blaire concluded.“I ask you to join me in a specialprayer for them and all workers, especially those without a jobstruggling to live in dignity. MayGod guide our nation in creatinga more just economy that trulyhonors the dignity of work andthe rights of workers.”

ANAHEIM, Calif. - SupremeKnight Carl A. Anderson calledthe number of attendees at the

Knights of Columbus 130thsupreme convention in Anaheim“a testament to the growth and de-velopment” of the internationalfraternal organization.

More than 2,000 Knights fromaround the world -- many of themwith their wives and children --along with 12 cardinals and morethan 70 bishops attended the Aug.6-8 convention.

Anderson made the commentsat the States Dinner, a high pointof the convention that bringsKnights together in a celebrationof patriotism.

The celebratory tone carriedthrough the keynote speech ofCardinal Timothy M. Dolan ofNew York -- a member of theKnights of Columbus for morethan 30 years -- who got a biglaugh after thanking Anderson forbooking him into the honeymoonsuite of the hotel where the con-vention took place.

He went on to say he wanted toturn his audience’s attention awayfrom “the crimson tide” of bishopsand cardinals seated before themand focus instead on the Knightsand their wives, and the sacramentof marriage.

“We Catholics are hopeless ro-mantics, you know, when it comesto married love,” he said, recallingsomething a staff member had saidto him when he was the arch-bishop of Milwaukee. In striving toincrease vocations to the priest-hood and religious life, Jan Ruidltold him, he was not thinkingalong the right lines.

“The greatest vocation crisis

today is to lifelong, loving, faithful,life-giving marriage,” she said.“You take care of that one, andyou’ll have all the priests and sistersyou need.”

“‘For an increase in vocations tothe priesthood, consecrated lifeand the sacrament of marriage’should perhaps become the newphrasing for a prayer of the faithfulat every Mass,” Cardinal Dolanwent on, referring not to high di-vorce rates -- but to low sacramen-tal marriage rates.

Other speakers focused on theissue of religious liberty -- a hottopic at a convention with “Pro-claim Liberty Throughout All theLand” as its theme.

Pointing out that the clergy andthe faithful of the United Stateshad launched a robust defense ofthe fundamental right of religiousfreedom, Archbishop Richard W.Smith of Edmonton, Alberta, --the newly elected president of theCanadian Conference of CatholicBishops -- noted that their neigh-bors to the north are also facingmany challenges to their religiousfreedom.

“Freedom of religion is notmerely the right to freedom ofworship -- it’s the right to live outour beliefs in the public square,” hesaid. “On an issue of such funda-mental importance, we must bevocal.”

In his homily during the open-ing Mass, celebrated earlier thatday, Orange Bishop Tod D. Brownalso touched on the issue of reli-gious liberty.

“We face a growing secularism, attacks on the value and gift ofhuman life, attempts to redefinetraditional marriage, and seriouscurtailment of our religious rights,”said Bishop Brown, a Knight ofColumbus for 40 years. “Certainly,

there is a clear and demandingneed today for the new evangeliza-tion called for by Blessed John PaulII and, now, Pope Benedict XVI.”

These are difficult times -- justas St. Juan Diego lived in difficulttimes, he said. “In those tumul-tuous times in Mexico, Our Lady(of Guadalupe) brought a messageof love and peace. Millions of na-tive peoples embraced Christianityin the years that followed,” BishopBrown said.

As the patroness of the Ameri-cas, and of the Knights of Colum-bus, Mary provides a model ofhow to respond to the Lord’s call,

a model that will be all the moreimportant as clergy and laypeoplearound the world begin to respondto the call to the new evangeliza-

tion.“I’m confident,” Bishop Brown

said, that the Knights “will be inthe front ranks of the evangelizers.”

ST. LOUIS -- Archbishop J.Peter Sartain of Seattle “listenedcarefully” to the concerns and

feelings of board members ofthe Leadership Conference ofWomen Religious and asked forthe board’s help in learningmore about “members’ experi-ence and understandings of re-ligious life,” the LCWR saidafter an Aug. 11 meeting withthe archbishop.

Archbishop Sartain wascharged with overseeing thegroup’s reform after an assess-ment issued in April by the Vat-ican Congregation for theDoctrine of the Faith ques-tioned the organization’s fidelityto Catholic teaching in areas in-cluding abortion, euthanasia, women’s ordination and homo-sexuality.

An Aug. 13 statement fromLCWR said the board had beencharged by its membership at anAug. 7-10 meeting in St. Louis

with articulating “its belief thatreligious life, as it is lived by thewomen religious who compriseLCWR, is an authentic expres-sion of this life that must not becompromised.”

The board also told Arch-bishop Sartain that “the expec-tation of the LCWR members isthat open and honest dialoguemay lead not only to increasingunderstanding between thechurch leadership and womenreligious, but also to creatingmore possibilities for the laity

and, particularly for women, tohave a voice in the church.”

In his own statement aftermeeting with the LCWR board,Archbishop Sartain said he re-mained “committed to workingto address the issues raised bythe doctrinal assessment in anatmosphere of prayer and re-spectful dialogue.”

“We must also work towardclearing up any misunderstand-ings, and I remain truly hopefulthat we will work together with-out compromising church

teaching or the important roleof the LCWR,” he added. “Ilook forward to our continueddiscussions as we collaborate inpromoting consecrated life inthe United States.”

The LCWR, an umbrellagroup of 1,500 leaders of U.S.women’s religious communitiesrepresenting about 80 percentof the country’s 57,000 womenreligious, said the boardplanned to meet again withArchbishop Sartain “later in thefall.”

truly been a blessing in disguise.Running the gamut of grade levelexperience from lower to middleschool has given her a better under-standing of how children developand grow from early childhood intoyouthful adolescence.

Mother was fortunate to be ableto attend the World Youth Day inRome in 2000. This week-long ex-perience where more than two mil-lion youth of all ages from all overthe world, gathered to share theirfaith, gave her a new perspectiveand view of the greater picture ofyouth in the Church today andhow everyone has an important

part to play in its growth. In addition to her extensive expe-

rience on the elementary level,Mother also has significant experi-ence working with high school stu-dents at the Academy of the HolyFamily. Many of the students whomatriculate at the Academy arefrom foreign countries and the Sis-ters who teach them become familyas well as academic instructors.Mother treasures the years that shewas fortunate enough to be a partof those students’ lives, and contin-ues to stay in touch with many ofthem after their graduation. Shebrings this strong sense of the con-

tinuity of family with her to SacredHeart School, and hopes that shewill be able to use this experience toreassure parents as they journeywith their children through theireducational experiences at SacredHeart and beyond. She believes thatall teachers are not only academiceducators but should be role mod-els for all their students in life aswell. She enjoys working with oth-ers and is looking forward to work-ing as a team with all the teachersand staff. Catholic education isclose to Mother’s heart, and shefeels truly blessed to have been ableto be a teacher and now principal atSacred Heart.

In a recent conversation withMother Christina, she commented,“I truly appreciate the warm wel-come I have received from the Sa-cred Heart community. As I ambecoming acclimated to the peopleand culture of SHS through con-versations with parents, students, faculty, staff & alumni, I have dis-covered Sacred Heart School’s richtradition of faith, family, and serviceto the community. Everyone I’vemet has expressed that the experi-ence of attending SHS or being in-volved in the school community isa treasured gift in their lives. I lookforward to serving as administratorand becoming a part of passing onthat gift. Like any gift-giving expe-rience, I anticipate I will become abetter person in the process.”

It is evident that Mother is bring-ing with her, a wealthof experience, both in the classroom and as an ad-ministrator, to Sacred HeartSchool.

The one thing that may beharder than being an Olympian isbeing the parent of an Olympian.

As I watched the London games,I was awed by the athletes andcharmed by their parents.

There was Michael Phelps’mom, her eyes and mouth drawninto o’s, mo-mentarily mis-reading as i lver -meda lfinish for agold thenb r e a k i n ginto politeapplause asreality sunkin.

There wereAly Raisman’s parents, moving asmuch as possible while seated:leaning back, rocking forward, biting their lips as their 18-year-old daughter flipped across a 4-inch beam. “I think they weremore nervous than I was,” Alytold Bob Costas.

But the parent who impressedme most was Rita Wieber, theMichigan mom who clutched arosary as her daughter, Jordyn, sailed across the uneven bars. Herquest for gold involved heart-break: Jordyn was favored to winthe Olympic All-Around, as thehighest-scoring gymnast in allfour events, and instead she didn’tqualify. She couldn’t suppresstears, and the image was broad-cast endlessly: chin dropped intopalms, fingertips pressed to eyes.A symbol of defeat, a longtimedream snatched away.

More striking than the cryingwas the composure that soquickly followed. Jordyn, who is17, tweeted: “Thank you all foryour love and support. I’m ex-tremely honored to be anOlympian and be a part of thisteam.”

Rita reflected that night on herblog. “Things don’t always end upas we think they should, but inthe end…it becomes obvious that

God has a good plan,” she wrote. Two days later Jordyn faced an-

other shot at gold, this time as ateam. Rita woke in London witha pit in her stomach. “I knew theday could end up great, but if itdidn’t,” she wrote in her blog, “Iwasn’t sure I could stand to seeJordyn sad anymore.”

Rita went for a morning runand then headed to a Catholicchurch to pray the rosary. Sliding

into the wooden pew brought afamiliar sensation: how manytimes she had done so back at St.Jude in Dewitt, Mich., and now, across the Atlantic, the churchuniversal, that sense of home.

“My parents always madegoing to church as a family im-portant,” Jordyn had toldCatholic reporter Eileen Gia-niaodis. “It’s a very special familytime and it means a lot to me.”

Seated inthat pew, rosary beads inhand, altar be-

fore her, Rita wasovercome bytears. She criedfor two hours.Having dartedaround Lon-

don with friendsand relatives – sight-

seeing, beach volleyball– this was a dose of solitude,

allowing the tangle of terror andthrill in her chest to unravel.

Soon it was time for the bigmeet, and as the U.S. women’steam advanced their lead, fromvault to bars to beam, Rita letherself watch Jordyn. “She lookedso happy, it just warmed myheart.”

The American gymnastsclinched the gold, the first timesince 1996. Rita, who is a nurse, took to her blog again, writing,“If I wrote an hour-by-hour time-line of my emotional status overthe past 48 hours, it would looklike an EKG strip.”

Two days later Jordyn was sit-ting in the stands, having declaredherself “the loudest cheerleader,”watching her teammate GabbyDouglas win the all-around titleshe had hoped to clinch. Jordyn

cheered wildly and tapped out thecongratulatory tweet: “You de-serve it, girl!”

The gold medal Jordyn wonbrought glory, and the gold medalshe lost brought character. Backhome in Dewitt, she can proudlyrecite 2 Timothy 4:7: “I havecompeted well; I have finishedthe race; I have kept the faith.”

Some students from grades 6, 9and 12 returned to St. BernardSchool on the Friday before open-

ing week, and the ones that diddisplayed energy “bigger and bet-ter” than last year, HeadmasterThomas Doherty said.

About 15 students lined theschool’s driveway, holding wel-come signs and waving to passingmotorists prior to the beginningof orientation and classes. Redand white balloons were tied tohandrails at the front entrance.“Energy and enthusiasm will bekept strong through students car-ing for each other,” Doherty said.

“I want happiness for you,” hesaid during his welcome speech inthe auditorium Friday morning.

“Love your classmates. Be part ofthis community. We all benefit. We all make us better.”

Friday’s session had an abbrevi-ated schedule and included SpiritDay activities for three grades andtransfer students.

There are 58 freshmen, orninth-graders, in the class of2016, administrator Jill Pattensaid. That class will graduate inthe year that St. Bernard’s marksits 60th anniversary. Faith-basededucation sets it apart from otherEastern Connecticut schools, saidMatthew Murphy, a freshmanwho lives in Gales Ferry.

“It’s very much a family atmos-phere,” Murphy said. “The faithpart of it is very important to me.”

Students come from all overNew London and Windhamcounties to be schooled at St.

Bernard’s. The headmaster com-mutes from Massachusetts everyday.

“It’s definitely worth it,” saidJak Kennedy, a senior who drivesfrom North Windham.

Two seniors were paired withgroups of younger students withthe elder classmen helping theiryounger brethren find their lock-ers and homerooms. The groupshad names like Holy Rollers,

Black Knights, Green Givers, RedCross, and Simply Blue.

There are 74 seniors in thisyear’s class, which is the class of2013. Last May’s graduating classnumbered 73. The high caliber ofthe teachers becomes more appar-ent as students get older, saidKatie Bosetti, a senior who livesin Mystic.

“I’m super excited about thisyear,” said Bosetti, who said herinstructors are a major reason whyshe’s planning a career in specialeducation. “The teachers inspireus very much.”

With excitement comes confu-sion, Doherty noted.

“It’s going to be OK,” he said.“The first day seems crazy. Youwere in a much different placeone day ago. Relax. It’s going tobe great.”

September 29

World Heart Day. Care for your heart’s health. Exercise and eat healthy foods. Also care for your heart’s spirit with hugs and reading about God’s love (John3:16).

Olympics & Great ExercisesThe gospel readings during September include some wise thoughts from Jesus.

When Jesus told his close friends that he would be killed and then rise, his closefriend Peter tried to scold him. Jesus told Peter, “You are thinking not as Goddoes, but as human beings do.” Scientists have discovered that babies are bornwith the ability to think but practice and exercises can improve thinking skills.

Jesus also told people that they cling to human ways and forget his command-ments. Jesus challenges us to think like God thinks. He wants us to be wise andnot just accept what people say. He knows we are wired to think and wants us toreally think about things and ask questions to learn. In the Bible, 1 Corinthians2:16 states For, “Who can know the Lord’s thoughts? Who knows enough toteach him?” But we understand these things, for we have the mind of Christ.

That is important as you study in school. It’s also important as people elect anew president and decide who God wants them to choose when they vote.

School helps you think by solving problems and answering questions. Try toincrease your thinking skills with these ideas:• Compare and contrast objects to think about similarities and differences. It

helps you develop analytical skills.• Brainstorm and think about what if? questions about making slight changes.

These exercises help you be creative.• Concrete thinking comes from knowledge that is gained with reading, remem-

bering what is read, and applying what is read. Read more to increase thesethinking skills.

• Abstract thinking comes with comparing, analyzing, and experimenting. Nur-ture these skills by finding patterns, predicting what might happen withchanges, evaluating facts, and following clues.

• Figure out how you think best and make use of your own style of learning. Areyou creative, musical (recall better when reading or studying with music), logi-cal or analytical(analyze and observe things to learn), visual-spatial (thinkingby visualizing things), kinesthetic (think as you move and do things-such asacting something out) interpersonal (thinking with debating and talking), in-trapersonal (learn best when alone), verbal-linguistic learner (like to dwell onmeanings of words), or naturalistic (investigate nature)?

• Ask questions to clarify information and to help learn more. Then search forthe answers.
