Fourways High School
Dear Parents and Legends We have come to the end of a very busy second term. You have w ritten exams and some of you will be thrilled with your results, others will be disappointed. If you are not happy with your results, the following questions need to be considered. How much work did you do? Did you listen in class and ask questions? Do you do homework? Do you go over the work covered in class every day at home? What study method did you use and how effective was it? What are you going to do differently? The Matrics start w riting their prelims at the end of August, they need to use this holiday to prepare for these exams. Set aside a couple of hours a day to revise, this will take the pressure off you in the third term. We hope you stay warm this holiday. Come back refreshed, and ready for the new challenges that await you. Gwendolyne de Bruyn

AFRIKAANS SPELATHON
For the very first time, Fourways High School has enrolled gr 8 – 10 pupils in the ATKV-Spelathon (Afrikaanse Taal-en Kultuurvereniging). The teams were: Gr. 8: Zoe White and Caitlin Hamilton Gr. 9: Mckaylé Steyn and Tanvi Sujanani Gr. 10: Colbey Gerber and Ofentse Bulane.
The team, together with Mrs Roux, have worked extremely hard to memorize 1 000 Afrikaans words and practiced spelling them out loud in Afrikaans. They met at 06:30 in the morning week after week to practice, and worked until 16:00 more than a few afternoons. These pupils did extremely well in the first rounds. Congratulations to Zoe White, Caitlin Hamilton and Mckaylé Steyn who are through to the Gauteng final round in September.
Congratulations and good luck!

F1 IN SCHOOLS
THE SPRINGBOKS
“My Training Day with the Springboks” took place on the 21st of June 2017 where various South African rugby legends as well as current springbok players took part. Deputy Principal Mr. Garth Neilson welcomed the Boks to our school, but gave a warmer welcome to the young players, whom he called ‘the Springboks of the future.’ The following schools participated: Protea Glen Secondary School from Lions Rugby Union; Boipelo Secondary School from Lions Rugby Union; Caiphus Nyoka Secondary School from Falcons Rugby Union and five under 15 players from Fourways High School, namely Jack Walther; Kelvin Urwin; Aiden Lovell-Greene; Tshidiso Letsoalo and Cameron Mack. Springboks Eben Etzebeth, Tendai Mtawarira (The Beast), Siya Kolisi, Jesse Kriel, Jan Serfontein, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Jaco Kriel, Oupa Mohoje and Coenie Oosthuizen went through the basics of how to play rugby and techniques to use to avoid injuries, with the children. Training drills were organized by former Springbok coach Ian McIntosh, who along with former Springbok players Breyton Paulse, Stefan Terblanche, Morné du Plessis, James Small and Pieter Muller, and South African Rugby Union player Ethienne Reynecke, ensured that everybody had a great time. Editorial per Nicholas Zaal of Caxtons newspapers: “Most of these children come from the townships where it is all about soccer,” commented Nathi Magubane, a teacher at Protea Glen Secondary School, a school benefiting from the Vuka Rugby Programme. “It is a highlight for them to play with the guys they see on TV, and they will see how they can play for South Africa one day if they take rugby seriously.”

AWARDS & RUGBY
We Came! We Saw! We Conquered! The u16 A & B rugby teams played for 1st place in their respective leagues at the end of a brilliant season. The u16B team, undefeated in their league games, narrowly lost the final, 26 – 28 and showing great heart by coming back from 0 – 21 down after the first 20 minutes. Buma and Joshua showed brilliance, scoring a brace of tries each, with Lithemba converting 3 of those tries. Quintin, Micah and Michael led a solid front row, providing a foundation for newcomers Ronewa and Dimitri (who had never played rugby before this season), allowing them to showcase their skills and love for their team. Tsiamo proved that he could, in fact, catch a rugby ball and ‘run faster than Usain Bolt.’ The u16A team lost only to King David in the league and met this team again in the final. The tension before the game was palpable, but the boys’ eyes shone with the belief in their ability to win after an almighty war-cry led by captain Graeme Webster. The 30 strong parent group that has supported the boys this year gave the boys their usual resounding support and the team did not let them down. Matt’s scintillating try took the entire crowd by surprise and was the cherry on the top of what was a match to remember. Dominic and Maurice were the other try scorers, with Brendan kicking 2 conversions and 1 penalty. The final score was 22 – 18 and the U16A were crowned 2017 champions! The entire team played with heart and it is important to mention other out-standing moments, namely:
Dominic’s never give up attitude when it came to sprinting.
The excitement on the bench, with everyone anxious to get on to the field and play.
Maurice’s vision in the lead up to his try.
Jason and Jayden’s consistent lineout steals.
Declan’s tears when he was subbed.
Brendan trusting his boot.
Graeme tackling like a man possessed and having his BEST game of the year.
It has been an absolute pleasure and privilege to watch this group of U16 boys grow into outstanding and dedicated rugby players. Good luck in the 1st team next year. Alexander Arndt.
