Gregg Thompson, HeadmasterDear Charlie,

I am very sorry that I am late in getting this to you but my situation has been so fl uid that it has not been until now that I have been able to see a direction I should take.

Fortunately my fi nancial situation has improved from last year. That is not to say it is good but it is much better than it has been for a couple of years. As you know last year was a most diffi cult time for our family. However, it has made us much stronger and much more appreciative of what God has given us and put before us.

It pleases me to say that we will not need the tuition assistance FPD most graciously offered. I can not express my gratitude fully for the understanding FPD had with my situation last year and the offer of assistance. It certainly brought home the fact that we made the right decision in coming to FPD and making it our home. While unfortunately, I may still from time to time be tardy with a payment. I certainly won’t be as consistently late as last year. While those times should be rare, I think it would be better to be a little late once in a while than to take assistance that may could go somewhere else more effectively right now.

Again, I apologize for the late notice but it was not a decision I could make until very recently. Thanks again for all your support and help and please let me know if I can ever do anything for you guys.

Sincerely,An anonymous Tuition Assistance recipient

The above letter was received in late summer. Because of your donor-investment in our Annual Fund it was possible to assist families like the above who have struggled through various fi nancial hardships due to the economic downturn.

Your investment in the lives of FPD students through your gift made it possible for families with fi nancial need to keep their commitment to educate their children in our Christ-centered college preparatory school. Your investment lasts a lifetime - in fact, an eternity. Thank you!

Because He is faithful,Gregg Thompson

Dwight Jones, Chairman of the Board of TrusteesThis past academic year has been record setting in many ways. If you haven’t already, I would strongly

encourage you to read the recent FPD Magazine and the State of the School Letter (available in the Development offi ce). God clearly maintains a strong hand on the School, especially in the midst of the diffi cult economic times.

This publication recognizes the many friends of the School who have contributed to the success of the School, both fi nancially and in volunteering their valuable time. On behalf of the Board and Administration, please accept our sincere appreciation for your continued support.

As I’ve stated before, we owe our existence to the many people who have gone before us and given sacrifi cially to the School in excess of the base tuition costs. As the current stewards, I pray that all in the School family will continue this sacrifi ce in order to sustain the same educational opportunity for future generations.

Based on current enrollment interest, it is clear that our community has recognized that FPD is setting an exceptional standard for quality education in Middle Georgia. As such, I trust that all who have contributed to the School take great satisfaction in the returns you are generating.

If you haven’t already, please prayerfully consider giving your sustained fi nancial support through the annual fund, GOAL, capital campaigns and/or planned giving. Our development staff will be glad to assist you and all gifts are meaningful.

The Board and Administration appreciate the fact that choosing an institution for your child’s education is one of the most important decisions you will face. Thank you for entrusting FPD with this honor and privilege. To God be the Glory!

In His Service,Dwight Jones - Chairman

“The classroom microphone/amplifi cation systems have made a huge difference in the classroom environment for me. I am spending more time teaching, and less time repeating instructions. If a child needs to be addressed from across the room, I can actually ‘whisper’ in my mic and get his attention. No matter where I am in the room, every child can hear me clearly. This is important to me because I never sit down while I am teaching, I am constantly in motion assisting students with their computer activities. I truly appreciate the Annual Fund and the purchase of these systems for the elementary classrooms.”

I have spent 34 years of my life in private education in various schools across South Carolina and Georgia and never have I worked at a school like FPD.

From its wonderfully challenging mission statement to the support the teachers receive from administration, it is a unique departure from the experiences that I have had in my career.

My wife Jan and I have contributed to the annual fund because we believe in the blend of educational excellence and spiritual nurturing that FPD provides its students. We want as many students as possible to share that experience, so we designate a part of our contribution to the tuition assistance program.

Since some of our students have yet to accept Christ as Lord, we consider it not only a way to help worthy students attain a fi ne education, but also a part of our Christian mission.

The annual fund also provides our faculty with opportunities to grow in professional development as well as providing the extras that help us enrich the educational experience for the students.

In my previous experiences, teachers were limited in development because they were responsible for paying the entire amount for classes, seminars and enrichment trips. In other schools, those “extras” are limited by the teachers’ ability to pay for them.

We believe in FPD … the students, my fellow faculty members, and God’s mission for the school.

Contributing to the annual fund is our way of showing that belief.

Atkinson teaches A.P. European and honors world history. His wife Jan teaches sixth grade English.

I support the Annual Fund at First Presbyterian Day School because … I am an educator.

As a science educator, I understand the benefit of multi-sensory learning, of technology that links classrooms around the world and of faculty development experiences that support teachers in an ever-changing field.

I have taught in the science field at several schools in several counties – both private and public. I have struggled through teaching experiences where I was given a case of copier paper and a rolling cart (for a desk) during faculty pre-planning and asked by my science department chair to just “do the best that you can.”

During those early years in my teaching career, I spent a great deal of my own earnings on classroom and laboratory supplies because I desperately wanted more for my students than what a piece of copier paper could deliver!

This is not the case at FPD, where students and faculty have tremendous resources at their disposal.

The Annual Fund offers teachers and classrooms an opportunity to meet the needs of the 21st century student; in other words, an opportunity to provide excellence in a particular field – not just the mediocre as a result of tenuous circumstances.

And so with great confidence in the educators at FPD, I contribute to the Annual Fund each year.

I endorse the teachers who will shape the lives of my own children, my co-workers who journey with me each day and a facility that prepares students for a continuously evolving technological world.

Thank you!

If you peek in the elementary music building, you will see all of the beautiful new drums!

The students were certainly surprised when a classroom set of tubanos (drums made to resemble African drums and Latin American conga drums) arrived at the beginning of the school year.

This summer, I took a World Music Drumming course in South Carolina where I participated in numerous drum ensembles and even led different ensembles.

Thanks to the generous donations to the school’s Annual Fund, third-fi fth grade students will learn African, African-American, Latin American and Caribbean drumming styles.

Beginning with different tones and learning how to play in a drum community, the students will build a repertoire of basic drumming skills. These skills are immediately applied in traditional drum ensembles.

Other skills to be learned include playing echo patterns, call and response, improvising

on the drums, creating new drum ensembles, and working on complementary rhythms in an ensemble setting.

Community music making is of utmost importance in a drum ensemble. Every member is just as important as the other.

Drumming will be a part of this year’s elementary Christmas program, “Christmas Around The World.” Students are busily working to “get into the groove” on ensemble one for our Christmas program.

The students will continue to learn drumming techniques in order to play ensembles of increasing diffi culty by the end of the year.

The ensembles are not only made up of drums, but also of other non-pitched percussion instruments. Gourds with beads, high and low bells, scrapers, talking drums and bongo drums are other instruments that make up the drumming ensembles.

Excellence Continues 2009-10

God has blessed FPD with a level of fi nancial strength and stability that is rare in today’s economic climate.

FPD remains among the most fi nancially sound independent schools in the region. Enrollment continues to grow, especially in the lower grades, and emphases remain in place to aggressively pursue the lofty mission to educate and equip children to change the world for God’s glory.

Your investment in FPD empowers faculty and staff to directly impact young Vikings in the classroom, on the stage, and in the athletic arena.

Your commitment helps to build a solid fi nancial foundation on which today’s kindergarteners can be assured of the same opportunities as today’s seniors.

Thank you for your desire to invest in the mission at FPD. May God be glorifi ed through your support for this special school.

Blessings,

Charlie Parrish

GOAL 2009-10

18

Under a GA state law established in 2008, you are now able to re-direct a portion of your state income tax payment to provide need-based tuition assistance.

FPD has partnered with the Georgia GOAL Scholarship Program to help facilitate the provisions of the law and off er students with Greater Opportunities for Access to Learning (GOAL).

This program allows us to provide need-based fi nancial assistance to students who are currently enrolled in a Georgia public school and who desire a Christian-based education at FPD. Also, GOAL has extended our capacity to help existing families with tuition assistance funded internally.

Please go to the FPD website or contact our Development Offi ce for more information.
