DESCRIPTION
The Canal linking Nantes to Brest is an invitation to relax in order to discover the unsuspected treasures of inland Brittany ; it is like going back to one’s roots. This 360 km long waterway runs through the counties of Brittany from East to West, providing a unique opportunity to experience the environment of the region at a slow walking, biking or navigational pace. Its construction dates back to the first half of the 19th century, it was inaugurated in 1858 by Napoleon III. In1923, the construction of the Guerledan dam and the progress of the railroad put an end to the use of the canal to transport goods. Today, hauling horses have given way to cyclists, hikers and boaters. Following the banks of the waterway means going through the 220 locks along its course, discovering many fine towns dotted along the route and passing in silence through unspoilt natural landscape.TRANSCRIPT
