NEIL COXThe Iron’s manager pens his latest notes as we welcome Exeter City to the Sands Venue Stadium this afternoon...

Good afternoon and welcome to the Sands Venue Stadium as we play host to Exeter City. We extend that to Matt Taylor, his coaching staff, the players, officials and fans of our opposition.

Since my last set of notes, we got a well-deserved win against Tranmere Rovers here last time out. It was a good victory against a decent team who got in the play-offs last year and have done okay in the league so far this season. We battled hard and also created a further four or five chances to see the game out, but importantly we got in the positions to have those opportunities. It’s something we’ve worked hard on in training and hopefully we can continue to create chances in that manner.

Last weekend at Northampton was a tough one, as we had to play 77 minutes with ten men. After the sending off it was difficult. We got organised and managed to keep it at 0-0 at half time, but the disappointing thing was the manner of their opening goal. When we’re away from home, we need to defend better than that. We then chased the game a little bit and lost 2-0 with a goal on the break at the death.

We had a busy transfer deadline day last Tuesday and were delighted to bring in Harry Wood and Hayden Hackney on loan from Hull City and Middlesbrough respectively.

We were impressed with Harry when we

played Hull City in pre-season and have kept an eye on him since. He’s an aggressive midfield player who can get forward and always wants the ball. He has good energy and really likes to get about the pitch.

Hayden’s addition was another one we’ve been working on for a while. He’s an attacking midfield player who can get in the box and score goals, and does the dirty side of the game really well. He understands how to win games, will bring aggressiveness in midfield, and running power. He’s a good passer of the ball and we believe he’ll chip in with goals.

Thanks for all your support so far this season, and thank you to the 331 who travelled to back the lads at Northampton despite it being available to watch on iFollow. We were sorry we couldn’t give you any points to cheer about, but I think you could all see the lads battling and giving their all. We’ve worked hard on the training ground this week, working on a plan to get all three points today and hopefully we will see celebratory scenes again at full-time like we did a fortnight ago.

Enjoy the game, get behind us and up the Iron!

TEN MAN UNITED DEFEATED AT NORTHAMPTON Down to ten men for over 70 minutes of the game, the Iron suffered a 2-0 defeat at Northampton Town last Saturday.

It was backs to the wall for United after Emmanuel Onariase’s early red card but Northampton had to wait until the second half to make it count with Danny Rose and Sam Hoskins the men on target.

Onariase saw red after just 20 minutes when fouled Rose as the striker bore down on goal.

Mitch Pinnock’s subsequent free-kick slammed into the wall before United almost struck the opener as Liam Roberts saved from Devarn Green and George Taft’s header deflected a fraction wide.

Paul Lewis went close with a header while Rory Watson brilliantly kept out Hoskins at point-blank range in first half stoppage-time.

Lewis had further chances in the second half, including a header against the crossbar, and Northampton finally made the breakthrough when Rose stabbed home Hoskins’ cross on 63 minutes.

Scunthorpe applied some late pressure and came close through substitute Jake Scrimshaw, but the home side made sure of all three points in stoppage-time when Hoskins forced the ball home after Dylan Connolly’s shot was cleared off the line.

On the defeat, Cox said: “After the sending off it was difficult. We had a gameplan and we knew in the first 15 minutes they were going to try and get it in behind us. Manny [Onariase] got himself sent off and then it was going to be difficult, but we got organised and managed to keep it at 0-0 at half time.

“In the second half we came out in a different way and tried to be braver in possession and play through the thirds. Then we conceded a goal from the counter-attack which we shouldn’t be doing - we should be organised, and should be getting closer to them.”

RESTAURANT NOW OPEN ON SUNDAYS Scunthorpe United is delighted to confirm our restaurant has reopened for service between 12noon and 3pm on Sundays.

The Iron have recently welcomed a new Head Chef to the club, with John Greenley taking the reins in the kitchen. John has previously worked as Head Chef at the likes of Hilton Garden Inn, The White Swan in Scotter and The Ashbourne Hotel, while he also had a Head Development Chef position at Healing Manor, amongst other roles.

Meals will cost £10.95 for one course, £16.95 for two courses and £21.95 for three courses.

Season ticket holders will be able to claim 10 per cent off their meal when you dine in our restaurant on non-matchdays (maximum £10 discount per visit), while there will also be further time specific offers throughout the season.

HACKNEY SIGNS ON LOAN FROM MIDDLESBROUGH Scunthorpe United is delighted to have completed the signing of midfielder Hayden Hackney on loan from Championship side Middlesbrough until January.

Born in Redcar, the 19-year-old joined Boro’s Academy at Under-10s level and has represented England Under-15s.

After impressive performances for Middlesbrough’s Under-18s and Under-23s, the midfielder scored the winner against Burton Albion to give them their first-ever win in the EFL Trophy.

Hackney, who signed his first professional deal two years ago, made his senior debut when he started in their FA Cup third round match against Brentford in January 2021 before his league bow on the final day of last season against Wycombe Wanderers. He was rewarded with a new contract this summer.

“I’m delighted to be here, and just can’t wait to get going,” Hackney told iFollow Iron.

“The gaffer has told me what he wants and I also know (Iron coach) Tony McMahon from his time coaching at Boro and helped my decision to come here.

“I want to help the team as much as I can, play as many matches as possible, and hopefully get some wins. I want to chip in with some assists, goals and work hard for the team really. I’m a box-to-box midfielder who can do both sides of the game, defensively and creatively.” UNDER-18S EDGED OUT IN ROTHERHAM ENCOUNTER Despite taking an early second half lead and dominating for large parts of the encounter, the Iron Under-18s unfortunately succumbed

to a 4-2 home defeat to Rotherham United in the EFL Youth Alliance League last Saturday.

As the second half began, it took the Iron just four minutes to take the lead through the ever influential Harry Lewis. Receiving the ball on the left hand side, the left wing back drove towards the Rotherham penalty area, turning onto his weaker right foot and rifling his shot past the Millers keeper to give the U18 side an early second half lead.

After Iron chances, Rotherham then began to dictate the game and found an equaliser on 65 minutes. Scunthorpe’s backline failed to deal with the visitors’ dangerous long throw and the ball fell kindly to the Millers midfielder who found the net with a super strike from 25 yards out.

Unfortunately two minutes later, the Iron fell behind in what was a hammer blow of two goals in quick succession. Rotherham’s wide man found time and space to deliver a low cross which trickled along the six-yard box and was converted at the back post to hand the visitors the lead for the first time.

Their lead was however short lived, with United’s U18s showing great fight to equalise with just 20 minutes left to play. Cameron Wilson skipped past three Rotherham players down the right flank to win his side a free kick, with the set piece played short to Jack Moore-Billam who found Harrison Poulter in the area. The in-form Iron forward turned the Rotherham defender before Sellars-Fleming was on hand to lash home the leveller.

Unfortunately the Millers then struck twice late on to hand the South Yorkshire side all three points. IRON: Balme; Moore, Young, Lobley; Moore-Billam (Cribb, 83), Franklin, Lewis, Wilson, Robertson; Sellars-Fleming, Poulter.

IRON DEFEAT TRANMERE FOR FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON Myles Hippolyte’s early penalty earned the Iron their first victory of the campaign with a 1-0 success over Tranmere two weeks ago.

Hippolyte fired his third-minute spot-kick down the middle after the visitors had been penalised for a handball inside the box and though keeper Joe Murphy got a hand to it, he could not keep it out.

Murphy ensured Rovers’ margin of defeat was not even greater with several fine first-half saves.

He flew low to his right to keep out a powerful drive from Alfie Beestin in the 24th minute, before later getting his body in the way of a Devarn Green effort as he latched on to a clever flick into the penalty area.

Despite plenty of industry in their attempts to get back into the game, Tranmere - who had scored just once in their four league matches going into the game - lacked a goal threat, with Ryan Watson off target with efforts either side of the break.

Teenager Dan Gallimore came close to making the points safe for the hosts when he fired wide after breaking into the box in the 71st minute.

Visiting substitute Mani Dieseruvwe’s touch let him down when the ball broke to him on the edge of the six-yard box late on, allowing home keeper Rory Watson to gather - and Scunthorpe to secure all three points.

Neil Cox said: “There was a lot of hard work and grit from the lads, and we still created four or five good chances to see the game out, but we’re in there - we’re working hard on the training pitch to get people in good areas and we did that today. We just have to be more clinical in front of goal, and then we don’t have to get to the last five minutes and panic.

“I’m so proud of the boys. We’ve had a lot of injuries but all the boys are working hard together. There’s a good team spirit forming and bringing the two young lads Dan Gallimore and Cameron Wilson on at the end was brilliant for our academy too, who have done a brilliant job. It’s a big positive for the club.”

James Moody caught up with the former Huddersfield attacker, who returned from injury at Northampton last week...

Attacker Harry Bunn is delighted to be back in contention following a two-game lay-off in the league through injury.

The 28-year-old pulled up in the warm-up ahead of the 1-1 draw against Sutton United, with his replacement Jake Scrimshaw thrusted into the starting team for the game and eventually netting on his debut.

He returned to the squad in last week’s 2-0 defeat to Northampton Town, and first gave his reflections on the game: “First and foremost, we were disappointed with getting beaten last weekend.

“I think it was a bit of an uphill battle after we went down to 10 men, but it was just one of those things. We’ve got to pick ourselves up straight away and look towards this game.”

Going into the match at the Sixfields Stadium, the Iron were four matches unbeaten, which had seen three successive draws before their first victory of the campaign last time out at home.

The former Manchester City youth graduate believes there’s no reason why the side can’t build another good run of form, starting with the match against the Grecians.

“We were playing well before last week, so there’s no reason why we can’t go straight back to what we were doing,” he continued.

“There are going to be bumps in the road along the season, and that was one of them. We’ve been looking forward to this game as it’s a chance to put things right.”

Speaking about his recent injury, Bunn is hoping withdrawing from the Sutton game late on will have benefitted him in the long run, enabling him to come back to fitness quicker.

“I was gutted I couldn’t make the Sutton and Tranmere games,” he explained.

“I had a tight groin and didn’t want to make things worse. I’ve trained for over a week now, so I’m happy to be back in.

“I spoke to Michael McBride before the game,

after the warm-up, and we’d considered taking some pain killers, but I don’t think it would’ve been worth it. I could have played that game and then missed four, whereas as it happened, I just missed two and then got myself back fit again.”

September has given the team chase to take stock of the opening month of the campaign, which began in the usual relentless fashion with midweek games throughout. Indeed, the second month of the season only features four matches for United, all of which falling on Saturdays.

The time during the week has allowed for sufficient recovery, to work on things in training, and to allow the side’s injury list to shorten.

“Training has been really good and intense and it’s been good that we’ve been able to work on a lot more,” he said.

“When we’ve had Saturday-Tuesday, like in August, it’s been a quick turnaround and more often than not you’re still recovering from the game. The Saturday-Saturday gives us the opportunity to do a lot more work on the training pitch.

“It’s tough, because as a player you want to play as many games as possible as well, but it’s nice to get that break and have a week in between each game. We’ve probably needed it, and it’s given chance for the lads with injuries to get back fit.

To get themselves back on a good run of form, Bunn knows the Iron need to be at their best to overcome an Exeter team that have consistently challenged at the right end of the table for the last few seasons.

“I think for the past couple of seasons, Exeter have been right up there,” he said.

“They’re a strong side, but it doesn’t change what we’re trying to do. Every game is different, but we still go into the game to try and win it. We can go into the game with confidence, knowing that we can pick three points up. We need to take that into the game.”

Finishing in ninth place in Sky Bet League Two last season, it would’ve been a disappointing campaign for all those involved at Exeter City. Having been play-off finalists in 2018/19, the club might have hoped to go one step further and gain promotion into the third tier, but the Grecians finished three points off the play-off places.

No doubt the players and staff at St James Park will want to get into those play-off places once again and fight towards the top of the table.

Manager Matt Taylor brought in a number of new faces during the transfer window. Josh Coley, Jevani Brown, Scott Brown, George Ray, Callum Rowe, Sam Nombe, Pierce Sweeney, Timothee Dieng, Jonathan Grounds, Colin Daniel and Kyle Taylor were all brought in on permanent deals.

The squad was also bolstered with the loan signings of Cameron Dawson, Padraig Amond, and Owura Edwards.

The Grecian’s pre-season saw them record wins over Tiverton Town, Taunton Town, Bath City and Weymouth. Taylor’s side also

recorded a 2-2 draw against Cardiff City, and later suffered defeats to Bristol City and Shrewsbury Town.

Their league campaign kicked off with a goalless draw at home to Bradford City, before a trip to the capital to play Leyton Orient ended

in a 3-0 defeat. Another goalless draw followed, this time

away to Barrow. Exeter recorded their first league win of the season in emphatic fashion, beating Bristol Rovers 4-1.

Their two most recent league outings were both draws, the first being 1-1 away at Harrogate Town, before their third goalless draw of the season at home to Forest Green Rovers last weekend.

Only one loss in the league for Taylor and his side so far this season, but the Grecians will look to turn their draws into wins.

EXETER CITY IN OPPOSITIONONE TO WATCH: MATT JAY Born in Torbay, Devon, Matt Jay joined Exeter City as a youngster and progressed through the club’s academy and into the first-team.

He made his debut for the Grecians in September 2013, appearing in a 2-0 loss to Wycombe Wanderers in the Football League Trophy.

After a handful of appearances in Exeter’s first-team, Jay spent time away from the club on loan. He had three separate loan spells, all in the Vanarama National South, for Weston-super-Mare, Hayes & Yeading United, and Truro City.

Since breaking into the club’s first-team, the 25-year-old has gone on to make over 100 league appearances for the club, scoring 29 times. In March 2021, he was named as League Two Player of the Month.

Ahead of the 2021/22 season, Jay was named as the club’s new captain by manager Matt Taylor.

MANAGER: MATT TAYLOR In his playing career, Matt Taylor played for a number of clubs. He had spells at Charlton Athletic, Cheltenham Town, and Newport County. But it was his four years with Exeter which was most notable, even spending time as club captain.

His first steps into coaching were with Bath City, joining the club as a player-coach in February 2016. After leaving Bath, he retired from playing.

In the summer of 2018, Taylor was appointed manager of Exeter, replacing Paul Tisdale. His first season at the club saw the Grecians miss out on the play-offs by a single point.

The following season saw the 39-year-old guide Exeter into the League Two play-off final. They didn’t achieve promotion, however, as they lost 4-0 to Northampton Town.

His third season as manager of the club ended with a ninth place finish, just narrowly missing out on the play-offs and talking about this term, he said: “There’s a lot more to come from us in an attacking sense.

“But in terms of a starting point based on heart, endeavour and fitness, I’ve been really pleased.”

HARRY DAVISOur skipper pens his latest set of notes as we welcome the Grecians to our stadium this afternoon...

Good afternoon and welcome back to the Sands Venue Stadium for the first time in a fortnight, and for the first of only two home games this month.

I’d also like to welcome players, staff and fans from Exeter following their long journey up here today and wish them a safe journey home after the game.

Last Saturday was a disappointing day as we wanted to go five unbeaten and keep the momentum going. We were well below the standards of our recent games and didn’t deserve anything out of the game.

I think if we keep 11 men on the pitch, I’m pretty confident in getting something out of the match. That didn’t happen and from then on, you’ve got to keep a clean sheet with ten men and we didn’t quite do that.

We have gone through the game again as we strive for improvement and look at areas where we could have done much better. We’ve had a good positive week on the training pitch and the attitude has been spot on. We are determined to put it right

this week with a positive result. A big thank you to the travelling fans last

week. It was great to see so many of you there supporting us and making such noise. We are very grateful and frustrated we didn’t send you home happy. As with any season, there’ll be lots of highs and lows, and we need to stick together to bounce back from last week and get ourselves on another good run of form.

Again, we’re in for another tough test against a good team who are always up at the right end of the table. We want to build on the last home game and make this place difficult for any team to come and get anything.

Thank you for your support and I hope you enjoy the game. Up the Iron,

Harry

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH

Giving Football Back to Small Business

At eBay, we know small business and football clubs used to be like chips and gravy, two peas in a pod – a match made in community heaven. Ironmongers, ship workers, spring makers and cobblers, all formed clubs which decades later are still prospering. But nowadays, you’d think it was all eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues and mega sponsors, detached from the humble origins of our historic clubs.

That’s why eBay are proud to support 300,000 small businesses who help power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be donating our advertising space to a lot of these businesses – on match day hoardings, around grounds and beyond – throughout the coming season, to ensure they can continue to thrive in our local communities. So, join us in giving your support to Small Business Power, because today, they need us more than ever.

WOOD MAKES LOAN MOVE FROM HULL Scunthorpe United is delighted to have completed the season-long loan signing of Hull City midfielder Harry Wood.

The 19-year-old, born in Leeds, arrived at the club on Transfer Deadline Day from the Championship side.

Wood made his first senior appearance for the Tigers on the final day of last season at Charlton Athletic as the side celebrated promotion back to the second tier. That was as a substitute, ironically replacing another former Iron loanee in Regan Slater.

He would complete a celebratory couple of days by penning a new two-year contract, with a further year’s option, at the club soon after.

The midfielder joined Hull at Under-16 level and has also made one substitute appearance for the team so far this season, coming off the bench in the 1-1 draw against Wigan Athletic in the Carabao Cup earlier this month. TICKETS ON SALE FOR PORT VALE HOME GAME Tickets are available to purchase now from our ticket office and sufctickets.com ahead of the the next home game in a fortnight’s time, which sees us host Port Vale (3pm kick-off on Saturday, September 25th).

We also have parking for the fixture on sale via sufctickets.com and you can make a saving on that by buying in advance.

SEASON LOG 2021-22

REVEREND ALAN WRIGHT CLUB CHAPLAINGood afternoon and welcome to this fixture against Exeter. After a run of four games undefeated, the Iron succumbed to a defeat at Northampton. Despite that, there are encouraging signs for the rest of the season, especially when we get back fit those who are out injured. However, none of this really matters when we are confronted with the enormity of what happened 20 years ago this afternoon (BST).

I’m sure those of us who were around then can remember what we were doing when we heard the awful news of the attacks on the twin towers and elsewhere. It was one of those moments etched in the minds of people, just as the assassination of President Kennedy and the outbreak of World Wars similarly were. When the first plane struck, it was assumed it was just a very bad accident, with no other overtones; when that was followed very soon by the striking of the second tower, it became obvious that it wasn’t an accident, but wilful destruction of human lives. I’m just amazed that the loss of life, terrible thought it was, wasn’t higher. When a while later, the towers actually collapsed, it added a whole new dimension, with casualties on the ground as well.

One of the responses was of course the occupying of Afghanistan, which only ended very recently. At what cost was that occupation? Let’s hope and pray that nothing like the massacre on 9/11 ever happens again.

Enjoy the game; up the Iron! With all good wishes, Rev Alan. Club Chaplain

THANKS TO OUR SPONSORSOur last game at the Sands Venue Stadium saw the visit of Tranmere Rovers in which the Iron took an early lead thanks to a penalty from Myles Hippolyte, a goal which was enough to seal all three points, and our first win of the season.

Our matchball sponsor for the fixture was David Lloyd, who sponsored the game in memory of his late mum Hilda Lloyd and dad Richard Lloyd.

We would like to thank David and his guests once again for their fantastic support and we hope they all enjoyed their day with the club.
