SATURDAY 11 TH MARCH, 1995 DUNDEE NORTH END CENTENARY CUP - THIRD ROUND

own O.V.D. SCOTTISH CUP ow n ANOTHER HOME DRAW

The draw for the sixth round of the OVD Scottish Junior Cup has paired us with West Lothian giants Whitb u rn. The tie goes on next Saturday with a 3 o• clock kick-off . A he althy attendance is expected and home fans are asked t o come early. Fans are reminded that season tickets are not valid for this game and that admission is £2 and £1.

For Whitburn it's another away tie, t.heir fifth in this season's competition. The Burnie are going well on the domestic fr ont also, with a cup final appearance under their belts already this season. The East Region championship has just es c aped their grasp these last three seasons, t.wo third places and a runners-up spot, hut they are well placed to take the flag this season.

At least six c oach loads of fans are expected to follow Whitburn north for their first game on Taysi de f or a very lo ng time. Whitburn, of course were involved in th a t infam ous ga me at Dalry a fortnight ago but both their fans and players r e c e ived nothing but praise for the way they conducted them s elves.

Whitburn•s Social Club was packed for last Sunday's draw which was later relayed onScotsport and, alth ough the draw wasn't clear

cut the concensus of opinion was that it was an interesting draw.

Snow caused the postponement of two of the three replays due last Saturday . Unfortunately in the replay that did go ahead, North End went out , beaten 4-1 by a more than capable Camelon team. However, hy all accounts, it was the team which to ok its chances which progressed to the next stage, North End creating as many if not more than their opponents.

This afternoon Tranent visit Loch Park, Nev Cumnock bidding to become the team to end Glenafton•s domination of the competition in recent sea ,-ons. What bet a surprise result?

The other replay takes Kelty Hearts to Barrhead to meet the fancied Arthurlie. There were two inspections b e fore last Saturday's game was f i nally called off. The second insp e cti on was so late that the Kelty team bus va ~ parked outside the club s e cretary ' s house with its engine ticking over waiting for the phon e to ring with the referee's decision.

The draw has brought the winners of this afternoon's replays together in the quarter finals. There is therefore, t.he possibility of a repeat of last season's semi final tie between Glenafton and Arthurlie. The Glens won 4-0 on that occasion after surviving a first half siege by the Central League champions.

Camelon•s Carmuirs Park will be packed to the gunwales for the Mariners' meeting with Kilwinning Rangers in the third of the quarter final ties. The present Ayrshire League leaders attracted 2,500 to Abbey Park for their tie with Lewi s United and a sizeable proportion of that crowd are sure to foll ow the Gers to Falkirk.

A healthy support is also expected to foll ow our Tayside colleagues Lochee United to Hill o• Be ath. These ar e excitin~ times for a Lochee team which has tasted defeat only once in s omething like 26 games this season. J.ochee ended the h o pes of Ashfield in Glasgow so won't be intimidated by the tight c o nfines of Keir • s Park.

<Press Comment • Leaders Tayport have been finding scoring a problem in recent

games but they will be looking to boost their tally when at home to bottom club Kir ri e Thistle. Port are likely to continue with midfielder Ste ve Stewart in a striking role after his impressive show in the Scottish Cup tie against Carnoustie when he scored the winner . "

- 'The Courier• prev i ewing Tayport v Kirrie Thistle (4/3/95)

"Ewan Cameron was i n top form for table topping Tayport, notching all the goals i n a 4-0 home win over Kirrie Thistle. It was a perfect tonic for Por t 's flu victim manager Dave Baikie who rose from his sick bed to watch part of the game."

- 'The Courier• (6/3/95)

" Whitburn are one of t he top teams in the East Region and two of their squad, midfielder Paul Taylor and striker David Scott pl Nyed in a recent Junior International Trial."

- Tayport boss Dave Baikie in'The Courier'(6/3/95) v~en asked abo ·, t the OVD Cup draw .

"Th e home side never looked in danger against their Angus vis i tors who produced only two shots on target in the entire 90 minutes and , once they had settled , it was only a matter of time before the goals started flowing. "

- Fife Herald (10/3/95) Tayport 4 Kirrie Thistle O.

"Ea s t Region se c retary Allen Bryce described them (Whitburn Juniors' players and support) as a ' credit to themselves, their town and the East Region. Local Councillor Jim Dickson praised all concerned for their restraint and not getting embr o iled. "

- 'Lothian Couri e r' (3/3/95) commenting on the scenes at Dalry.

"The combination of the over exuberance of an element among the home fans, poor refereeing and some dreadfully c ynical f ouli ng resulted in a bleak afternoon of black c omedy. "

-'Irvine Times• (3/3/95) on the Dalry v Whitburn Cup ti e .

" .. . . . i t's breeding violence through t oo many re -in s tated, gnarled old pros with grudges in their b oo ts . Juni ors is becoming a misn ome r. r would scrap re-i n st at ement fr om Se ni o r level . "

C/he <Bakf r's <Bit Good afternoon to our supporters ' and a warm welcome also to the players and officials of Longside.

With Mel away on club business and myself laid l ow with a flu bu g, Jimmy Hunter ran the show last week with the assistance of Andy Sommerville who is recovering from an exploratory operation on his knee , And a great job they ~id, recording a good 4-0 victory over Kirrie Thistle. J.t's great to see a few goals starting to go in ag a in. Let's now hope that we can build on this win and carry it into today's encovnter .

As I'm sure th~t yo~ all know, ve'v 0 been drawn at home next week to Nhitburn. At this stage in the competition, a home draw Is about the best that you could ask for. Whitburn are the top Junior side in the East Region. They have already contested a cup final thi~ season and, if they win their games in hand, they would ov, ,,rtake Ca111elon at the top of their league .

1 kno ·.- that they don't seem to be getting the rave reviews whi eh the i r main riva J s seem to enjoy but, nevertheless they are a top drawer side and are on a run of victories.

We, on the other hand, have got to start to being realist ic . No disrespect to our previous opp onents in this Scottish Cup campai~n but we've no t really played a side of any real quality - and struggleG into the bargain (or at the least just done enough)

I'm afraid what we've done in the past isn'L going to be good ~nouuh if we're gain ~ to proceed in the tournament. It's goin g to re ijuire a top class performance from Tayport.

'l'h,, qu,,1ity is definite ly here . It's the commitment that L so :,:etimes question. Well, from now on in there can be no hiding place. J.~•s time for ever~one to stand up and be counted. J. pose the question - Are we good enough? Have we got what it takes? I a vait the answer with great anticipation.

'!'his afternoon's visi; •,ors are the rising stars of the North Re gio n, winning t ,,.e f;rst ,Jivision championship l ;,st term and they have carried that form into this season in the Premier Division.

',le know only too well about teams f r r,m the North. Remember Banks ~• Dee onl y last season? A poor performance on the day allowed a teaw which Longside passed on the way up to the top division, to -:teal a victory. Why ? Because we ,Ji dn' t give them the respect wh·ich they Ke re rJue. When you do that ~ou w,• lk a very thin line .

We cannot allow that to !,appen this afternoon . Longside are a bigger, stn,n ',jer and better team than the side that we met tl'\i s tine lafut seas0n. If we show them the respect that the y 're due, then I'm confident that we'll pr•~ress in thiH Cup.

Support The Pnrt, Dave Baikie.

DUNDEE NORTH END CENTENARY TROPHY

LONGSIDE'S FIRST APPEARANCE IN THE THIRD ROUND

Since they entered the Junior arena in 1989, I.ongside cannot count this competition amongst their favourites. Previously the Za moyski Challenge Trophy and now the Dundee North End Social Club Centenary Cup, the North clubs do not meet the Tayside clubs until the third round.

In the previous five years Longside have failed to reach this stage. The previous results have been-

STONEHAVEN V ST JOSEPH'S (A)

FORFAR ALBION V INVERURIE LOCO (A)

DOWNFIELD V NAIRN ST. NINI AN (H)

As all the above ties have to be finished today, by means of extra time and penalty kicks if necessary, the draw, which will be made after the game at Stonehaven, will be clear cut.

Most of the ties look unlikely to be the cause of an upset, but with the sudden death formula, anything can happen. Sunnybank, Bon Accord, r.ochee United and Downfield look safe bets. Stonehaven, if they can capture last season"s championship form, could cause Joey's problems. Violet should get through, Forfar Albion can cause Inverurie Loco Works a few problems while we have pulled a tough 'un in second top of the Premier and last year's Division One champions Longside.

<Today is (}ame Longside, like Tayport are fairly recent additions to the Junior ranks, having affiliated a year earlier than ourselves, making their debut in the 1989/90 season.

The present club vas formed in 1948, playing Summer League football until joining the Aberdeenshire Amateur League in 1974. Jt was success all the way in the Amateurs vith the decision to turn Junior made in time for the start of the 1989/90 season.

They were promoted to the Premier Division as runners-up in 1991-92 but failed to establish themselves and vere relegated immediately. It was only a temporary dip in form, hovever, as they came up again last season as champions.

Longside itself is situated six miles inland from Peterhead and boasts an excellent ground at Davidson Park. The ground vas developed throughout the 1960's and 70's and gradual improvements have been made up to the present day. As vell as having floodlights on their main pitch, t.here are tvo floodlit training areas and a grandstand.

The final piece of the Davidson Park jigsav is their Social Club vhich vas opened at the end of last year.

A measure of Longside's ambition and commitment to the future vellbeing of the club can be seen in the appointment of a full time Commercial Manager, Bill Wallace, just over a year ago and the appointment of a full time Groundsman, Eric McRitchie in June last year.

All this doesn't come cheap, hovever, and the main funding is through the club's successful Red & Black Private Executive Culb and the sale of monthly' "Cracker" tickets.

Longside F.C. are sponsored by LOVIE Ltd. from charmingly named Covbog, Nev Pitsligo in a three year arrangement.

Longside haven't had many away trips out of their Region in their six years in the Juniors. Jn previous seasons they have visited Kilbirnie and East Kilbride. Jndeed they have equalled all their previous awaydays together this season vith a second trip to Fife in the past three months. Their last visit to the Kingdom saw their OVD hopes disappear at Hill of Beath.

FROM THE ARCHIVES TWENTY FIVE YEARS AGO

What was happening, football-wise, in Tayport 25 years ago in March 1970?

Well, as usual the Amateurs had two teams out, t.he first team in the Midlands Division One and the second string in Alliance Division Two.

The first Xl were battling hard to stay in the top division (they managed - just) and recorded a welcome 4-2 win away to Lawside PP. Several names from the line-ups of March 7th 1970 are still familiar at the Canniepairt . The team was: Derek White; Jim Mathers, F.ddie Stewart; Bingo Laing, Jim Scott, Richard Redpath; Ian'Pepsi' Paterson, George Ritchie, Maurice Flynn, Ian White & Doug Henderson. Goalscorers were Ian White (2), Paterson and our present chairman, att.acking fullback Eddie Stewart.

The Alliance Xl were on their way to promotion, dropping only one point from their last 16 possible points of the season. They played Dundee University 'B' on the East Common and ran out 2-0 winners. The line-up was: Stan Cove; Ian Mathers, Jain Bell; Graham Welsh, Davie Ure, George Bryson; Abby Oswald, Ian Mackie, Ron Redpath, Peter Beatt and Alex Ritchie. Both goals were scored by Alex Ritchie.

'---------------------· ---~------------1 KEVIN'S QUIZ NIGHT IS A BIG SUCCESS

Twenty three teams attended the quiz held on Monday night in the Downfield Social Club in aid of Kevin Thom's Benefit Fund. The evening was well supported by the Dundee based Junior clubs. Downfield (2), St Joseph's (2), I~chee United (2), North End, East Craigie and Elmwood entered teams.

Region Secretary Jock Myles set the questions and included some real posers from his Junior Football archives. Consequently the scoring wasn't high but out on top came Lochee United 'A' with the Taybridge Turnips taking runners-up spot .

The highlight of the evening, though, was the Question and Answer session with the celebrity panel which followed the quiz. on -the panel were Scottish Junior and '!lei tJ, , Jtnic:11:s-• manager Denis Gray, Grade 1 referee John Rowbotham from Kirkcaldy, Tayport boss Dave Baikie and Tayside Region secretary Big Jock Myles. F.ast Craigie's Steve Kell was the chairman.

An appreciative audience fired a large variety of questions at the panel who were very candid in their replies, even Big'Jock who, in reply to a request for his waist measurement, confessed to 52• ! Many topical issues were discussed with John Rowbotham giving a welcome insight into refereeing at thetop level and Denis Gray outlined his plans for the National team as well as telling of the passion which Ayrshire has for its Junior Football.

All in all it was an excellent evening and a boost to Kevin's Benefit year.

Sniffing }l6out With 'fhe Snout LARGS Thistle last week parted company wi .. th . their !Jlanage ,r . John Crawford. Crawford steered Largs to their shock Scottish Cup success last season but hasn't had the best of seasons. Thistle are currently at the foot of the league and the manager apparently hasn't been getting the required response from the players. What a difference a year makes.

*****

SNOUT spotted a report in a newspaper earlier this week of an unenviable record attributed to Central League side Larkhall Royal Albert. Apparently the official record of the club's last home game reads:- Attendance l; receipts £1.50 •

••••• DALRY Thistle are unhappy about the manner in which they were thrown out of the OVD Cup last week. They feel that several of their players were •subjected to severe provocation" and their local newspaper claimed that they had been ejected from the cup on hearsay. The columnist criticises the SJFA for canvassing its management members by telephone and not allowing them "to be furnished with the full facts before coming to such a monumental decision" ..... MEMBERS of the Port Support are reminded that there will be a 'Meet The Manager' evening in Cobbles Inn on Sunday 19th March at 8pm. There will be an opportunity to question Dave Baikie on any team matters and a member of the committee on matters of club policy. Jt will be a fairly informal evening and mine host at Cobbles , Andy Phin, tells me that there will be n snack laid on. All welcome.

• •••• TWO new clubs have applied for membership of the Midlands Amateurs for next season, the University of Abertay and a taem from Kirriemuir.

. .... RECENT controversies in the world of Junior Football have attracted the inevitable comments from sports journalists who normally restrict their comments to the Senior game. James Traynor of 'The Herald' took stick in the paper's letters page and his Scotsport colleague Gerry McNee was hardly flavour of the week following his comments on the Junior game in last - week's 'Sunday Mail' .

*****

TAYPORT is soon to lose the services of Mike Gray . The midfielder from Crail "ho came to The Canniepairt via the University of North (or was it 'South') Carolina leaves the district next week to take up a job in London. We wish Mike all the best for the future .
