Mayor, Gareth Howe, helped residents and staff plant spring bulbs in containers for the planned meadow area in our themed enclosed garden. "The bulbs and the wild flower seeds are representative of ‘sowing the seeds of dignity’ to ensure that dignity blossoms constantly in the home and a reminder we all have the right to dignity," commented a spokesperson for the event. Holly Lodge also celebrated Dignity in Care. Students studying Health and Social Care at Woodham Community Technology College and Greenfield School Community and Arts College celebrated Dignity Action Day at the Home. Together with staff, residents and their families the students supported the Dignity in Care Campaign, which aims to put dignity at the heart of care services through raising awareness and inspiring people to take action. The 25 year-10 students were given the chance to spend time with residents and staff, before releasing 75 balloons with messages of dignity attached. A spokesperson for the Care Home said, "Holly Lodge is already a committed Dignity Champion believing passionately that being treated with dignity is a basic human right, not an optional extra. Manager Karen Hunter and Senior Nurse Jackie Stabler have already been into the schools to discuss what Dignity in Care means and how it affects Holly Lodge as a care setting." DIGNITY IN CARE BRAVE SHILDON FAIL TO KEEP WHITLEY AT BAY Shildon’s dream of a Wembley final was shot down in flames by FA vase holders Whitley Bay who played most of the game against 10 men following the dismissal of defender Phil Brumwell. The game turned on Brumwell’s sending off in the 34th minute after his tackle on Bay’s Adam Johnson was deemed to be a straight red and a penalty by referee Richard West. Shildon keeper Keith Finch almost saved Paul Chow’s spot kick but the ball squirmed away from him and went in off the post, giving Bay an equaliser they didn’t deserve until it was handed to them on a plate. The Railwaymen, before the biggest crowd seen at Dean Street for years, made light work of the heavy pitch in the early exchanges. ‘Wassa’ Byrne crashed a shot against the bar and Danny Richmond headed over before Shildon took the lead on 21 minutes. Terrific work by Byrne and a close range header from ‘Bobby’ Moore brought a superb one handed save by Bay keeper Terry Burke, but Sam Garvie was on hand to slot home a close range opener. Shildon almost went two up when Moore fired over the bar and were looking comfortable, perhaps a little too comfortable, before Bay’s penalty equaliser. Boss Garry Forrest sacrificed the wing play of Lee Chapman for the midfield industry of Martin Houlahan as Shildon tried to keep Whitley at bay in the second half, but to no avail. Giant defender David Coulson caused havoc in the Shildon defence as they tried to clear a corner and he managed to force the ball home from close range after a lucky ricochet on 63 minutes. Substitute Jamie Harwood, who replaced Sam Garvie, had a chance to get Shildon level within a minute but after he cut in from the left his goalbound shot was brilliantly turned away by the flying frame of Bay keeper Burke. When substitute Phil Bell headed home Damon Robson’s cross on 75 minutes Shildon’s brave fight was virtually over. Their misery was complete when skipper Justin Keegan was red-carded two minutes before Bay scored two late goals. A towering header from the gangly Bell in the 89th minute and a stoppage time penalty by Lee Kerr after ‘Bustard’ upended Chris Moore, rubbed salt into Shildon’s gaping wounds. Despite Shildon going out of the competition, and the flattering score-line to Bay, tribute must be paid to the great work of the groundstaff, and everyone else concerned, to get the pitch playable. This season’s FA Vase run has been a fantastic roller-coaster of emotions which all started on a grey East Coast day at Easington. But as most supporters know the natural state of the football fan is bitter disappointment – no matter what the score. And that’s how Shildon fans were left feeling. The game against Whitley Bay was delayed by 15 minutes due to large crowds queuing to get in. S by B g th B T se af Jo st re S Gareth Howe plants spring bulbs with Doris Corner. UK’s NO.1 PROPERTY BUYER OVER 4,500 HOUSES BOUGHT Town Crier, Friday, 5th March 2010 A new community garden is being launched in Shildon. Residents are invited to a BBQ fun morning at the new allotment site at Furness Pit, off Byerley Road, on Saturday, March 13th. It is hoped as many people as possible will go along and help volunteers build new raised beds on the plot while enjoying a sausage sandwich or beef burger or two. the Shildon Mustard Seed Project, said, “A lot of people came along to the sessions and mentioned that they would have liked an allotment but would not be able to manage a plot on their own. From that came the suggestion that we have a community garden where families can get together and people of all ages could take part.’’ The Shildon Mustard Seed Project, which was launched by St John’s Church in 2007, then joined forces with Shildon Town Council and Groundwork North East to make the idea a reality. The Town Council gave the project the land and Groundwork North East is helping to pull everything together as part of its Creating Health in Communities project – funded by The Big Lottery Fund’s Reaching Communities fund and County Durham and Darlington Primary Care Trust. Helen said, “We have been working really hard over the winter to secure funding and recruit volunteers and now everything is coming together. We still desperately need more volunteers to come on board and we hope that once the fencing goes up in the next couple of weeks people will see that this is not a pipe dream but something that the town can achieve if we all work together. I would love to see loads of people come along to our fun event.’’ The fun day starts at 10.00am and finishes around 1.00pm. For more information about the allotment or to register an interest contact Helen Cole on 07761981160. The idea for the new community garden came from people who took part in the Shildon Mustard Seed Project’s vegetable planting sessions, which were carried out in the town last year in partnership with S&D Training. Helen Cole, community development worker for COMMUNITY GARDEN PROJECT GETS UNDERWAY Families can join forces and work together on the community garden. Police are appealing for information after a car passenger was left in a critical condition following a collision in Shildon on Wednesday, March 3rd. Three local men were travelling in a Ford Fiesta on Spout Lane when it left the road before travelling down an embankment and colliding with several trees. The 52 year-old front seat passenger suffered serious injuries, including fractures to his face, jaw and spine, and his condition is described as life-threatening. The 55 year- old driver suffered suspected broken ribs and a bruised liver. The 41 year-old back- seat passenger sustained abrasions and a fractured left arm. All three were taken by ambulance to Darlington Memorial Hospital. PC Damien Stevens of the force’s south road policing unit said, “The vehicle was travelling south-west on Spout Lane at around 6.20am and was approaching the railway bridge when it reportedly overtook another vehicle travelling in the same direction. While crossing the bridge it left the road to the near side and collided with several trees before coming to rest against one of them.” PC Stevens is appealing to any witnesses who saw the collision itself, or saw the vehicle shortly before the accident, to contact him on the non-emergency number on 0345 60 60 365 or the collision investigation unit directly on 0191 375 2159. POLICE APPEAL AFTER COLLISION There are only 16 seats left on the Crier’s trip to Houghton Hall, the garden centre in Carlisle. The trip will be taking place on Easter Monday, April 5th. A much-loved employee of Shildon Health Centre has retired after over a decade of devoted service to the local community.Pauline Mothersdale celebrated her retirement on Friday, February 26th, with colleagues. Her workmates, and friends presented Pauline with a beautifully-framed poem, which had been written about Pauline by staff at the centre. As well as being thrown a great

joint retirement and birthday party, Pauline also received a voucher for a water feature that will adorn her garden. As well as tending her garden, Pauline can look forward to some well-earned holidays. Although she will travel to lands afar, she will always return to Shildon, the place she was brought up and has lived in for almost her entire life.

Pauline said that she’d miss her fantastic colleagues and the great laughs they all had together. Judging by the tremendous send-off that she was given, Pauline will always be welcome to visit the Health Centre which she has served so fantastically. Prior to serving the public in the healthcare sector, Pauline had been a draughtswoman at Newton Aycliffe.

Pauline with the framed poem who workmates wrote about her.

PAULINE RETIRES AFTER A DECADE'S SERVICE

Dear Editor,On Saturday, February 13th, we held a fundraiser for the Great North Air Ambulance.Although the turnout wasn't as as good as we had hoped, once again, the patrons of Elm Road Club came to the fore.Their good humour and sense of fun made the night one to remember. They joined in the quiz, the Mr and Mrs Quiz and fun and games with great enjoyment to everyone.Phil Hall ran the night with his usual brilliant sense of

humour.I would like to thank everyone who gave prizes for the raffl e and bought tickets.Last but not least, thanks to the brave lads who allowed themselves to be auctioned as slaves. Well done.We managed to raise £550 for the air ambulance, who by the way, sent a lovely teddy for the raffl e.Thanks to them for doing the great work they do.

Yours sincerely,Joyce Bennett.

MAGISTRATES CONSIDER CUSTODY

Gary Hutchinson will return to Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court on March 18th, with the possibility that he will receive a six weeks term of imprisonment as part of his sentence. The 41 year-old, of Prince’s Street, Shildon, appearing with his left arm in a sling, pleaded guilty to the charge of common assault of his partner of three years. The pair, who both have issues with drink, had been drinking throughout the afternoon and just after midnight on February 6th, police responded to a call. They learnt that Hutchinson

had become abusive, had grabbed his partner, squeezed her throat and had slapped her across the face. Police, however, were unable to obtain clear statements at the time and had to return to the house later, as both parties had been drunk. The defendant had several previous convictions for dishonesty but this charge was aggravated due to previous convictions for assault, one of which in 2007 had caused the same victim black eyes. The defendant’s unconditional bail was extended and the Probation Service requested to prepare a full pre-sentence report.
