Telling Your Story

So, you are in the fight game and you are ready to go to the next level. You're gonna need sponsorship, unless you just happen to be independently wealthy. Let's face it, it costs money to get professional training, buy gear, maintain a balanced diet and travel to your events. It's time to start pounding the streets and the phones to get the help you need financially.

Now, think about this...

Why would anyone want to help you? Why would any company want to put their name on your back? What makes you unique and worthy of their support?

Often times fighters are great at fighting, but don't put much into the other aspects of their BUSINESS. Yep, if you are going to fight for money and hope to make a living at this, you will need to treat it as a BUSINESS. Preparing for fights, training and dieting are only a few of the aspects of what it's going to take to make sure the business of you as a fighter is successful.

Let's start out with a simple plan. Let's concentrate on getting your story down pat. WHY DO YOU FIGHT? C'mon, we all know that you kick ass and take names, that's why you strap on the gloves and practice your techniques, but WHY?

I often find myself faced with opportunities to give support to charities, and I do not always donate. In fact if it's seldom that I do. But when a person can tell me a story, a sincere story about why they are asking for donations, what they plan to do with the money, and how it is going to help them or the organization they are supporting, I often will open my wallet to them.

Now let's look at YOUR situation. WHY do you fight? Are you fighting to keep yourself off the streets? Are you fighting to buy your family a home? Do you fight to honor the memory of a loved one who has passed? Do you fight to prove that you have overcome adversity and are able to stand on your own? What is your story? The better you can tell your story, the more people will open their hearts and wallets to support you.

The Business of YouBy: MMA Recruiter Staff

Work on it, practice it the same way you practice your kicks and punches. You have to be able to tell your story as well as you can deliver devastating blows in the ring. You are your own best marketer. Tell your story to everyone you know, especially family and friends. They will help you with the details. Ask them to listen to how you tell the story and to let you know how it makes them feel. Practice, Practice, Practice. You need to be able to tell a good story quickly and to be able to elicit the same response from everyone you tell the story to. Imagine if someone were to write a book about you, what would you want people to know?

Sincerity will take you a long way. Don't make stuff up. Don't lie. Just be able to tell people why you got into the fight game, why you stay in it, and where you plan to go with it. Everyone has a personal story to tell. It does not have to be a sad story, perhaps you just have a love of the sport, were always good at wrestling and have found that it is something that your family enjoys watching and being part of which in effect brings you closer to each other. Maybe you see yourself setting a great example for your young son and are teaching him to leave the fighting in the ring. I'm sure everyone has a unique path that has brought them this far, now let's work on being able to articulate it.Once you have your story down pat, make sure everyone knows it. Put it in your profile on MMA Recruiter and any other social media you may use, better yet, film a video of you telling your story and put it on your MMAR profile. Tell your story to family so they can also tell it for you. The more people know about you and why you do what you do, the more your community will rally around you, and you may find that money is seeking you, rather than vice versa.

Take the time to do this part right, and many other things will come more easily. Be the one to dictate how you became who you are. Tell a good story, and you will develop a fan base that is passionate about cheering for you because they know what it means to you personally when you win.

Remember, it's the business of YOU.

Real MMA ManagersBy: Mike Camp

As a professional matchmaker I like to deal with the most direct and least complicated avenue of booking fights. It doesn’t matter to me if I talk to the fighter, a manager or an agent as long as it is hassle free. Not many people realize it but matchmaking is the single worst job in the fight game, especially at the minor league level. This is why I want to enlighten everyone on what I deal with on a daily basis. There are all sorts of characters in the fight game but I can classify most people that I deal with in 3 ways: manager; wannabe manager and agent.

A real manager knows the value of building his or her’s fighter(s) the right way to try to ensure long term success. They know that while they are booking the next bout that the real focus of their job is 2 years down the road and they do their homework. A true professional understands that money should not be the primary concern when booking a fighter’s beginning pro bouts. Now don’t get me wrong money is important and they will want it to be fair compensation but there are so many other factors to a bout than just purely economics. Opponent; style; organization and publicity are more important to a beginning pro’s career than another couple of hundred dollars. Unfortunately, not enough people know this and many a fighter’s career is hindered before it even gets started. Winning is paramount early in a fighter’s career. Also, building your fighter with the right matchups is critical. I’ve never had an organization tell me that they cannot use a guy because he has too many wins! Lol.

A wannabe manager is usually someone close to the fighter such as father; brother; mother; wife; girlfriend or friend. It’s been my experience that, except in rare cases, these people generally know nothing of the real fight game except what they think they learned from TV and they typically do not have the fighter’s best interests in mind because they have their own aspirations of fame and fortune from the fight game.

Real MMA ManagersBy: Mike Camp

That brings me to agents. Agents are the other end of the spectrum from real managers. Agents are what I like to call “meat vendors”. Agents do not look out for the long term interest of the fighter because their primary concern is making money NOW. They typically do not do their research and often book fighter’s in horrible matchups with their only concern being the most money they can squeeze out of a promoter. They do not care about the sport as a whole or if they are detrimental to it’s growth because all they want to do is earn the biggest commission that they can in the present.

Of course there are good agents and bad managers but for the most part you can distinguish them into these 3 categories. I write this article because too many fighters put all of their effort into training without much real thought or research into who is going to handle their business and I have seen many a talented fighter with a promising career derailed by the wrong people advising them. I urge all young fighters with pro aspirations to carefully consider and research who is going to best represent them and their career’s best interests.

5 Big Fat Burning TipsBy: Chris Pedroza

#5 – Recent research shows shuttle-running is tougher than runningintervals in a straight line (Treadmill)…

…so if you want to burn fat faster than ever, make sure youincorporate old-school shuttle runs (i.e. classic suicide typedrills) into your fat burning interval programs.

#4 – Use a food log.

“According to Men’s and Women's Health (Feb 2009, p 38), keeping a food loghelped subjects lose 3.5 more pounds than subjects that didn’t keepthe log.”

#3 – Hit a personal best in each workout.

This is an oldie, but a goodie. There are a few reasons you need todo this:

a) First of all, everyone loves progress, and if you can achieve apersonal record in each workout (i.e. could be # of pushups, planktime, etc.), then you will feel a HUGE sense of accomplishment.b) More personal bests = more results. Plain and simple.c) You will get addicted to the workouts, and always want to comeback for more attempts at breaking records.

#2 – Get a trainer and join a conditioning camp.

“According to Men’s and Women's Health magazine, (Dec, 2009), beginners whowork with trainers get more results than beginners who workout bythemselves”. Guaranteed.

#1 – Read a motivational quote every morning.

I promise you that it will elevate your motivation and inspire youto reach your fat loss goals. Here’s the first motivational quote you can read tomorrow morning:

“Be loud and proud of the healthy changes YOU are making in YOURlife. There are many more folks secretly wishing someone will takecharge and be a healthy role model for them. It might not happenovernight, but if YOU continue to lead by healthy example – withoutpreaching or being condescending – YOU can build an entourage thatwill help YOU reach the next level.”

Body ConditioningBy: Chris du Toit

Body conditioning is a vital part of MMA, or any full contact combat sport for that matter. We have all done our share of body conditioning with the old medicine ball, kicks and punching to the body and hardening our shins. To us as full contact fighters, is not just an acceptable training method but a necessity to ensure proper performance and develop the ability to withstand punches and kicks with minimum damage to our bodies. But sometimes improper and incorrect methods of body conditioning might do more harm than good. There is a lot of myths and bad advice surrounding body conditioning, and we can blame a lot of this on Hollywood and the way martial arts are sometimes portrayed on the big screen.

One of the most popular misconceptions about body conditioning is most definitely the conditioning of shins, in order to deliver a destructive kick without feeling much or any pain yourself. And right here most guys will tell you that rolling a hard object such as a glass bottle up and down your shin is one of the best methods of conditioning on your shins. The truth is that this is the most dangerous way of conditioning your shins. The rolling of the bottle or hard object destroys some of the nerve endings between the layers of skin and the actual bone, so you feel less when you kick, but it does not strengthen the bone beneath. In other words you will think that you are now able to kick harder but you are actually just increasing your chances to snap your shin bone in half.

Our bones are mainly made up of calcium, phosphorus and sodium and are some of the strongest stuff on the planet taking in consideration the weight to strength ratio. What makes our bones even more remarkable is that they have the ability to reinforce and strengthen themselves if they are subjected to regular added strain. This means if your shin bones, for example, are subjected to regular, constant and controlled impact, it will actually start changing itself from the inside, reinforcing itself and you will end up with a stronger bone that can take and deliver a bigger impact.

Body ConditioningBy: Chris du Toit

So, what will be an effective method of conditioning shins then, you might ask. Immediately scenes from an old martial arts movie pops into my head, and I am willing to bet money that a lot of you had the same image of a guy kicking palm trees with his shins somewhere in an Asian forest.

If that is your idea of conditioning, then I am going to rain on your parade now. Although it might seem like you are strengthening the bone but kicking hard objects, you are in actual fact weakening it. Bone impact with a hard surface such as a tree, plank, wall or whatever else you might be kicking creates hairline fractures on your bone, that actually weakens it, and a future blow will result in a bone break on those small fractures, creating a massive or more serious fracture or injury. So, what is the best way to condition shins, hands and other striking tools? This is where the good old punching or kicking bag that we are all so familiar with comes in. A bag gives just the correct impact absorption per square inch to minimize the risk of serious injury, while strengthening the bone and numbing the nerve endings on the shin. Repeated use of a punching or kicking bag will ultimately produce strong conditioned shins and hands.

So what about body conditioning? Many years ago I trained at a Tae Kwon Do gym under a former World Champion. His idea of body conditioning was to lay you down on the floor and have another student stand on your stomach, trampling and actually stomping on your chest and abdomen. The only results that this produced is that almost half his class ended up developing hernias, and stopped training. Although the intention was good, this was a bad, bad idea. Most, or a lot of trainers believe in a medicine ball, and I agree to a certain extent that if used correctly, this is a wonderful tool for body conditioning. But once again it has to be used wisely and with control. Always keep in mind that your body is made up of more than skin, bone and muscle. We have thin membranes and tissue keeping things like internal organs where they should be... internal. These tissue and membranes cannot be strengthened or conditioned and if they tear they take a long time to heal or do not heal at all, and has to be fixed by surgery. In many cases after such an injury the fighter will never be able to perform at his peak again, ever. This is a scary thought, but unfortunately it is reality.

The most important thing to remember when training or conditioning is to use safe and tested equipment and methods. When using a medicine ball, take it slow, increase the intensity gradually, stop at sensible level of impact, and never exceed that. You will never turn your body into stone. There is a limit to the conditioning your body can take, and exceeding that limit comes with a price. Happy training, and remember, “Never Back Down.”

Weighing in - You made it now what?By: Paul McGinley

Cutting weight takes knowledge, skill and above all practice. It takes the SMART athlete to rehydrate & eat correctly after the weigh in to maximize their performance; sadly most athletes will make big mistakes during this crucial time frame.

When you have made your weight, your blood plasma volume decreases and your blood pressure increases as a result, this is just the start. Your resting heart rate (RHR) can go up, and you can feel psychologically weak or experience fatigue. This process needs to stop, not only quickly but intelligently.

The Athlete will mostly start a colossal binge of food & water back into their bodies right after the weigh in, but they do not finish the job.

The smart recovery method

Eat small meals preferably at regular in 30 minute intervals. It is paramount that you insure carbohydrates are consumed at this time to regain proper sugar levels (get the energy needed). Now binging on a ton of food immediately after a weigh in is going to leave you bloated and sick. Your body will not be able to use all that food at once, and it will just sit there.

Smaller meals will digest and then clear the stomach and you will be able to eat again shortly after (every 30 minutes). The most important thing is to eat food you are comfortable with, do not try something different before your contest it may cost you it. A note of consideration should be taken, if the fighter has weighed in the day before an event, then eat ever 2-3 hours until the event then 30 minutes to an hour before competition.

Weighing in - You made it now what?By: Paul McGinley

Fluid is even more important to get back into our system. You should immediately take fluids following the weigh in and continue to drink at regular intervals. To insure that you have fully replenished or hydrated your body is to make sure your urine it clear, which is how you know you are back to normal (simple but effective). This can take 1-3 gallons of fluids over the next day to replace the 5-10 pounds of water weight you lost to weigh in. You need to keep drinking to make sure that the blood plasma (the fluid between the cells and the cells themselves) is refilled.

Foods, liquids? Oh my!

You want a lot of energy without making you feel lethargic or bloated therefore a few suggestions I can recommend. Protein should be noted to be consumed to insure a positive nitrogen balance and prevents muscle breakdown to keep you strong. Also in addition to protein Keep to easily digested carbohydrates such as chocolate milk or fruit smoothies, cereal with milk, fruit yogurt, or a bagel with a little peanut butter --excellent sources of carbs and fluids, and some contains some protein too!

Fluids that both offer nutritional value and recovery are Fruit juices, smoothies and milk shakes. Again same as carbs however these drinks offer more value than most sport drinks.

However sports drinks can rapidly hydrate you if electrolytes are consumed in this fluid. I wouldn't recommend sport drinks due to the poor nutritional value. If I had to recommend a sports drink, it would be because of the salt intake which can be easily consumed.

Finally another important factor! Rest your body needs to recover and use the food & fluids consumed to recover and store muscle glycogen and speed recovery rate.

Shine Conditioning For MMA FightersBy: Chris Pedroza

You will need Methyl-Salicylate (found in liniments), heavy-bag/Thai pad, cold compress, 600 mg calcium + vitamin D supplements.

1. Apply Methyl-Salicylate generously to your shins and warm them up by going for a 20 min run. MS causes local vascodilation and good blood flow. You can also substitute with ditdajow.

2. Kick Thai Pads, or a banana bag till your shins (not the skin or muscle above it) are slightly sore. Doing this in the sun is recommended. (Promotes vitamin D production for efficient calcium absorption.) Approximately 10 minutes of hard kicking on a regular pad surface should be sufficient for a beginner. Use your judgment.

3. Sit down. Point your toes, flex your calves: repeat 10 times each leg. Apply more Methyl-Salicylate and massage the shins and surrounding muscles deeply. Attend to localized knots/bumps if you feel any and try to break them up. The blood carries calcium, protein and all the good stuff which actually thickens up the shins.

4. Repeat steps 2-3 at least 4 times a day.

5. Apply an ice pack to both shins for the next 20-30 minutes. Massage and apply ice-pack repeatedly for as often you wish upto the next 48 hours. Do not kick the bag for at least the next day.

6. Take a 600 mg Calcium + vitamin D supplement. Else, drink a lot of milk and water. Eat fish, chew its bones, eat them.

7. Having taken *at least* one day off, repeat all the steps above.

This technique is more than just a superficial numbing of the nerves. In a month or two, you should be left with *denser* shins. Also, spar moderately to get a feel for what striking with it feels like.

A word of warning: You could break your shins if you kick hard on a sharp surface. You could OD on calcium. You could get a sunburn from the sun. You could get a frostbite from the ice-packs. You could choke on fish-bones. You could develop a blood clot that travels to your heart and gives you a heart attack. So, use your good judgment and you’ll be on your way to devastating shins.
