Ray Buckley, presenting the cheque toRonald McDonald House.

Local couple Jim and Mary Mulcahy were instrumental inraising more than €5000 for Ronald McDonald House at OurLady’s Children's Hospital Crumlin when they organised theBlarney / Ballylickey cycle with the help of Tom O’Brien andJohn Ahern, who cycled with Jim in 2010 raising €€2520.The second year the event gathered momentum and more than

20 cyclists took part raising an incredible €5285.85. In addition to sponsorship collected, Mannings Emporium

Ballylickey gave up the takings of a BBQ on the day of the cyclefor which Kanturk butchers Jack and Tim McCarthy had kindlyprovided the food. The cycle was in memory of Sarah Buckley who lost her brave

fight in Crumlin Hospital in October 2009. Sarah’s parents, Rayand Margaret, themselves raised €1200 for Ronald McDonaldHouse, and Sarah’s brothers Shane and Ciaran also took part in thecycle over the mountains with their dad Ray.Ronald McDonald House now has a plaque honouring Sarah and

the generosity of the people of Blarney and West Cork. This weekend sadly marks Sarah’s second anniversary and allare welcome to join the Buckley family at mass in Blarney onSaturday October 15th at 6.30pm

Times are tough and money istight. We have to makechoices about what we spendour money on and focus onnecessities. But of course, regardless of this, health andwellbeing is as important asever.I’m a great believer in maintenance andreducing the risk of problemsdeveloping. It seems logical to me that

it will ultimately be cheaper than havingto pay the cost of treating problemswhen they develop.

That is what Pilates is brilliant for –

you’re taking control of your own healthand wellbeing – you’re taking care ofyourself and maintaining your goodhealth! You’re not eliminating, but youare greatly reducing the risk of injury! So in the spirit of making Pilatesaccessible to as many people aspossible, I’m reducing the prices of the6 week courses that I run in the Studio.Call me at 086-2106323 if you’d likemore details!

TTiimmeess PPaasstt......with Brian Gabriel, Blarney and District Historical Society

In 1950 an American lady by the name ofBetty Zino Hiesch from New York Citycame on a visit to Ireland. The followingis an excerpt, about her visit to Blarney, from a rather long letter she wrote to theBlarney Magazine on her experiencesthrough-out the country.‘So, ‘tis Ireland you’re bound for, and why

would you want to go there?’ This question wasput to me as I crossed the Irish Sea. ‘You do notlook Irish’. ‘No,’ I replied, ‘I’m not.’ Then I went on to

explain why I was interested in visiting Ireland. Icame not to criticise or find fault. I came so Imight understand the Irish people better. Not onlyhave they gained stature in the political world butalso in medicine, art, music, engineering, scienceand other fields. My introduction to Blarney was visit to the

famed castle. The place is simply enchanting! The‘Old Ruin’, half covered with ivy and bits of greenvelvety moss is wrapped in beauty and romance. As I climbed the narrow stairs to the turret wherethe ‘Blarney Stone’ is embedded, I tried toimagine the Castle in the days of the McCarthy’sof Muskerry, circa fourteen hundred.Of course I did the ‘kissing act’ and as I wastrying to rise from my supine position, a merryblue-eyed lad was saying, ‘’Tis said, and I believeit, that your wish does not come true unless, whenyou arise you kiss the first Irishman you see, - andI am Irish.’ (This is Cork dialect) – What wouldyou have done if you wanted your wish to cometrue? But Blarney has more than the Castle. Adjacent

to it is the magnificent Rock Close. It is theresince time immemorial. Who knows where factbegins and fancy ends? Forgotten passage-waysand tunnels in its dark recesses probably lead tothe mystery shrouded bottom-less Blarney Lake. Isa great treasure hidden in its deep waters? Whattense dramas were enacted in days long past? Here, too, the Druids of old may have reigned. They practised the art of healing with mistletoe. This plant was endowed with magic power. Usinga golden sword, and enacting a great ceremonyfull of symbolism the Druids sought this rare gift. When a spray was found the air was rent with

shouts of ‘all heal’. Great oaks can still be seennear the Rock Close. The mistletoe being aparasite flourished on the oak. Perhaps these veryoaks have sprung from the ancient ones. Nearbyyews, ilexes, green and vigorous date from theearly times. Even today one’s imagination makesway for the weaving of fantastic tales full ofsuperstition, fancy, or reality. Who knows wherefact begins and fancy ends? Here is a spot wheredwell intriguing elves, fairies, ‘Little People’ andLeprechauns.About one mile from Blarney is a charming

Country Inn – St. Ann’s Hydro. Here I stayed for afew days and learned much. At tea, that veryafternoon I met a distinguished Lady from Dublinwho was also a guest. She guessed that it was myfirst visit to Ireland. Did I see the ‘Book of Kells’now in Trinity College in Dublin? She informedme that this book is a Latin copy in vellum, of thefour Gospels done in manuscript by monks of theEarly Era. “From the time of St. Patrick, Irelandbecame the most learned country in Europe” shesaid, “The Island of Saints and Scholars”. Herewas set the model for our present universities.Learned Irishmen travelled to the Continentspreading Christianity and general knowledge. I was fascinated. How little I knew. Here was ateacher, a priest and a scholar who found a paganland and brought to it Christianity and Churches. Then one evening, we all went to a socialgathering in a house in the grounds of the Hotel. After the usual pleasantry the conversation turnedto topics of Irish history that any visitor wouldcertainly find interesting. Did I know that SirWalter Raleigh was given 42,000 acres of landnear here, (Cork and Waterford) and that EdmundSpencer had 12,000 acres right in Cork proper? Then followed bits and pieces of heart-rendingtales, describing a time when the Irish wereexposed to all sort of Penal Laws and hardships. They were depressed by poverty and scourged bypestilence and disease. Those who had the meansfled. From youth to old age, scholar or peasantbecame poorer and poorer. This appalling state

continued from year to year. During the time ofQueen Elizabeth of England, Ireland was probablyat its lowest ebb. Men, women and childrenperished in their thousands. Many fled to the bogsto eke out a scanty existence, their hearts heavywith bitterness and resentment.Under Cromwell, again came death and

starvation and the conditions were even moredesperate. For the Irish it was ‘to Hell or toConnaught’. I was told about the laws enforced bythe invaders. People who would not follow theimposed laws were forbidden to teach or sendtheir children to school. Later there came intobeing, ‘Hedge Schools’, where children weretaught with someone posted as ‘lookout’, whichexisted into the 19th century but produced manybrilliant scholars. No clergy were permitted by lawbut some remained in disguise or in hiding. Noland could be purchased and ownership had to begiven up after thirty years for those already on theland. A valuable horse of a native could be takenby a planter for 30 shillings, no matter how muchit was worth.I could hardly bear to hear anymore. One of the

guests handed me a book by Edmund Spencer.Opening it he pointed to a passage. I read just oneparagraph.“From woods and glynnes came forth on hands,

for their legges could not beare them, the wretchedpeople and if they found a plot of water-cress orshamrock, there they flocked as if to a feast.”At this point, I was truly weighed down withman’s inhumanity to man. Nature, too had takenits toll. I must have looked tragic because someonesaid: ‘I’ll bet you don’t know what an ‘undertaker’is.’ Of course I knew, - but I was wrong. Landconfiscated in Ireland was given to foreignadventurers. These men were known as‘undertakers’. They seemed to be well named. What a history is the legacy of Ireland.

The second illustrated public lecture of the2011/12 Season of Lectures and Events of theBlarney & District Historical Society is onThursday 3rd November 2011 at 8.00 pm at theBlarney Secondary School (Scoil Mhuire GanSmal). It is titled ‘Woolworths and The IrishMain Street’. The speaker is Dr. BarbaraWalsh. Everybody welcome.

Despite the fact that as a nation we have faced and probablywill for some time, a tough economic situation, it has been agood year as far as Blarney Tidy Towns is concerned.

In conjunction with Blarney Chamber of Commerce, a new WelcomeBlarney sign has been procured and installed on a large rock outside theWhite House guest house. Thanks to Pat Coughlin for his permission. At a small function to celebrate our second place finish in Cork

County Council Anti-Litter Challenge, Tom MacGrath suggested thatwe have a lot that we should be proud of in Blarney. We came from lastplace in 2010 to 2nd this year, ahead of towns such as Bandon, Kinsale,Macroom and Ballincollig. With more focus on the perennial problemof cigarette butts, we can get the overall place. One good sign this yearhas been the increase in new volunteers, which is very encouraging. The joint venture with Blarney Chamber of Commerce in respect ofpainting some buildings which have been an eyesore for some time, seems to have had the effect of encouraging other owners to dolikewise. The flower boxes were also planted by the Chamber. Thisshould help greatly with next years Tidy Towns Judging. We have received a commitment from Cork County Council to fix thefour lights outside the Church of Ireland and have them included withthe maintenance contract for the future. The Credit Union has kindlyoffered to take over the planting and care of the area in front of theirpremisesApart from our work, it was great to see the tourist office up and

running. Well done to all involved. It was great news that the GardaStation is to re-commisioned soon, which should add further to the lookof the village. Our thanks go to all our volunteers in the Blarney Tidy Towns, to our

great group in the Blarney Community Employment Project team andBlarney Chamber of Commerce.Looking forward to next year.

The Toastmasters season has kicked off and the localBlarney Toastmasters Club have had a great start. Theirmeeting room in The Woollen Mills has been packed tocapacity for their first two meetings, with regular mem-bers and guests curious to sample the Toastmasters expe-rience.It was great to see that most of those guests, who had attended on the

opening evening, came back for the second meeting, with several of themindicating surprise that they found the meetings so enjoyable. The open evening was a great success. The real highlight of the night

was Fergal O Callaghan’s presentation on ‘Chocolate’. We were treated toa wealth of information about chocolate, covering everything from its his-tory and how it is made, to how in the right quantities it is good for us butvery bad for our dogs. We were also encouraged to sample differing gradesof chocolate from all over the world – and there was more than enough foreveryone in the audience. Yum Yum. Willie Wonka – eat your heart out.The second meeting was a club competition evening, where members com-peted in two competitions – the Humorous Speech Competition and theTopics competition. In the Topics Competition, entrants are given a certaintopic. They must then think on their feet and speak on the topic for approx-imately two minutes. The other members vote on who they feel gave thebest response. Jerome O Donovan won the Topics Competition and willrepresent Blarney in the Area final. The Humorous Speech contest invites entrants to deliver a …well…

humorous speech. This year’s victor was…Victor. Victor Sullivan, with aspeech titled ‘Who the hell are Blarney Toastmasters?’ turned an account ofhis antics at the recent ‘Load of Olde Blarney’ festival into a hilariousspeech that gave us all a good laugh and raised our spirits. A great evening

was had by all, and Victor will also go on to represent Blarney in the areafinal. Our next meeting is on Tuesday 11th October at 7.45pm for 8pm. Guestsare more than welcome, can come as often as they wish, and entry is freeto guests. A guest is never asked to speak at a Toastmasters meeting so youcan rest easy on that score. However, if you do feel like contributing wewill be delighted. In fact, in a short Topics Session prior to our competi-tions at our second meeting, we had excellent contributions from some ofour guests who decided to join in.Chalk that date down in your diary – Tuesday 11th October at the

Woollen Mills Hotel, and join in the fun with your local Toastmasters Club.

It Is Worth Getting to KnowGay MitchellGay Mitchell is a chartered company secretaryand accountant who incidentally worked withthe IFA in the early 1980’s. He is the youngestof a family of nine and as a teenager workedwith a Dublin coach building firm while goingto school at night. He later chose to studypolitics at Queen’s University, Belfast becauseof his strong interest in Northern Ireland issuesand he remains an advocate of mutual respectand cooperation among all groups acrossIreland.Gay’s RecordGay has over 30 years in public life serving ascouncillor, Lord Mayor of Dublin, TD, Ministerof State and MEP. He has been elected 14 timesin acknowledgement of his hard work.Guiding PrinciplesGay’s political conviction is informed by anethos based on the four pillars of rights, responsibilities, enterprise and social justice.Gay says “I want to return to a society based onprinciples; to a less harsh and a more mercifulsociety” He continues that he wants to put thewelfare of our people at the heart of thepresidency and would want to continue thepractice of Mary McAleese by quietly working, often below the radar, to make our country abetter place. “I hope that by example, I can helpothers to start on a new journey in search ofvalues that will take us through the iconic yearof 2016 and beyond.”A Person to Follow Two GreatsWe have had two of the best presidents in thelast twenty one years in the persons of MaryRobinson and Mary McAleese. They have beeninspirational, gracious, noble and a credit to uswhether it was on the parochial, national orinternational stage. They were very differentpersonalities, yet both were strong in their senseof balance and empathy with the people, in theirintegrity, intellect and leadership skills.I believe Gay Mitchell has the necessary traits,

intellect, experience, passion and vigour to makean excellent president. I acknowledge he iscoming from behind in not being known as wellthrough Ireland, he is not the controversialcharacter that grabs the headlines but he is trulya safe pair of hands that are so badly needed atthe moment. We need a president that can workin unity with government to promote thiscountry in the best light possible. Please take alittle time to get to know Gay, the family man,the professional, the hard worker, you won’t be

disappointed.Other Candidates, My ViewI was not going to comment on other candidatesbut I think that would be reneging on my onusto be transparent with you my electorate.Michael D Higgins is no doubt a gentleman andhas a wonderful intellect. He is popular but Iquestion does he really personify this nation andin light of it being a seven year term I believethat by mid term he will want to reduce his workload to match his naturally slowing body. Iappreciate he may well outlive many of us but ifwe go back to the incumbents’ that held theoffice prior to Mary Robison and MaryMcAleese we can see the lack lusterperformance of the older candidate. In referring to the three candidates Davis,

Scanlon and Gallagher I believe neither have thenecessary experience or ability to lift thenation’s spirit. While they have many finequalities neither are shining lights in the bigsense and I believe theywould bring mediocrityto the office. Finally I refer to Martin McGuiness and David

Norris. Dealing with Mr McGuiness first I haveto say I simply do not trust him and I do notbelieve he would work with the government forthe country but rather for the establishment ofhis party. We had a most successful visit by theQueen of England and he and his party decidedto snub her and set up protests. If we give himthe highest office in the land he says he wouldmeet her if she came again; what nonsense, whatinsult to our intelligence. As for working for theaverage industrial wage, this too is nonsensebecause there would be lots of extra allowancesneeded for running Arus an Uachtarain. With reference to David Norris I have to say

that while he is acolourful character ofgreat intellect he isdisconnected from thereal lives of ordinarypeople and suffers aserious lack ofjudgement. Many of you will

disagree with me as youare absolutely entitled todo. I do however suggestit is the wrong time forthis country to explorewhat I would call themore maverick typecandidates. We needsomeone strong, of high

intellect, integrity and experience to fill theshoes of Mary McAleese. We need a hard worker, dedicated to doing

what’s right for all the people of the country, aperson that would be inclusive and committed, aperson with the energy to serve with all his heartas he has already done in Dublin. Please get toknow Gay Mitchell and give him your No 1vote. You won’t regret it.

Do you suffer fromIrritable BowelSyndrome, Constipationand /or Bloating?

Colon Therapy or'Colonics' can help.Mimi Cosgrave, BSc R.N. R.M. Nut. Dip. MACH96 Manor Hill, Ballincollig, Co CorkT: 021 4873519 M: 086 1062902

email:[email protected] www.colonictreatments.eu

What is Colonic Hydrotherapy?Colon Hydrotherapy is a method of cleansing the colon by using specialized dis-posable equipment, purified warm water and abdominal massage giving the colona thorough cleanse. This results in a rapid detox. The system used is fullyenclosed and odour free.

Why have a colonic? To feel better. Digestion slows down by eating wrong food combinations, orunsuitable food, by stress, or emotional upset, and drinking too little fluids. Everytime this happens there will be some retention in the colon. A colon hydrotherapytreatment can help reverse this process, improving your overall sense of wellbeing, giving you a clearer mind and improved energy.

How do we become toxic?Over time the colon [or large intestine] becomes clogged with layers of gas, sticky, old mucus and old, hard faeces, just like a dirty filter. As the layers harden, the muscular [peristaltic] action of the colon muscles are inhibited causing slug-gish bowel movements and constipation. It then can’t allow all of the nutrients wehave eaten and digested to be fully absorbed so we require more food to getbasic nourishment. Then, constant leaking of toxins held in the old faeces andmucus over time reaches the bloodstream and carries toxic blood to the liver. This is then distributed to every organ and cell in the body.

How do I know if I need a colonic treat-ment?Common signs of the presence of toxic matter in the colon include, constipation, headaches, backaches, bad breath, body odour, fatigue, irritability, confusion, skin problems, abdominal gas, bloating, diarrhea. Two or more of these symp-toms may indicate toxicity.

How effective is a colonic? It is particularly useful for health maintenance, improving the effectiveness of theimmune system and for the prevention of various diseases, or to kick start weightloss or a detox diet. It is also useful for certain pre and postoperative conditions. The first treatment starts a detoxification process that takes six weeks to com-plete. It is therefore important to have follow up treatment during that time and tomodify your eating and fluid intake. This will support the cleansing process andprevent you from feeling ‘toxic’.

Having a colonic treatment – Is it embar-rassing?No, you will be fully covered during the treatment. You will be in a private roomwith only you and your therapist who is a trained Nurse, Nutritionist and holds aDiploma in Colonic Hydrotherapy . She ensures your comfort and protects yourmodesty. There is no mess or smells as wastes are carried away into a fullyenclosed waste system.

Can anyone have a colonic?Yes, providing that you do not suffer from abdominal hernia, active anal fissure orfistula, bowel perforation, cancer, early pregnancy, heart, kidney, liver or gall blad-der disease, severe hemorrhoids or blood pressure exceeding 160/100Your therapist will be happy to help If you have any question that has not beenanswered here by calling Mimi Cosgrave @ 021 4873519 / 086 1062902

Part-Time Employees –What are my rights?Working on a part-time basis can suit many peoplefor lots of different reasons. You may have children orolder parents to take care of and working full-timejust isn’t an option at the moment. On the otherhand, you might just not be able to secure full-timework in today’s market. Whether by choice ornecessity, in the last few years more and more peoplein Ireland are working on a part-time basis.Under what’s known as the Protection of Employees (Part

Time Work) Act 2001, part-time workers in Ireland can’t betreated any less favourably than comparable full-timeemployees. A part-time is deemed “comparable” to a full-timeworker where:They perform the same type of work as a full-time worker underthe same or similar conditions. The work performed by both the part-time and full-timeworkers is the same or similar or any differences are minor. The work performed by the part-time employee is equal orgreater in value to work performed by a full-time employee.Simply put, if you are doing the same job in the same way as afull-time worker, you’re entitled to the same rights andprotections as that full-time employee. There are only two circumstances where an employer can

treat a part-time less favourably than a full-time employee. These are in the area of pensions and secondly where the lessfavourably treatment can be justified on what’s known as“objective grounds.” Where an employer tries to justify lessfavourable treatment on objective grounds they mustdemonstrate that the difference in treatment has nothing to dowith the employee being a part-timer. They must prove thedifferent treatment is for a legitimate purpose and is appropriateand necessary. However, these are limited circumstances and inthe main, part-time workers have the same rights as their full-time counterparts. As a part-time worker you have equal protection in terms of

holidays, maternity rights, conditions of work and redundancyprocedures. In terms of holidays, part-time workers are entitledto 8% of the hours worked up to a maximum of 4 workingweeks. If a part-time employee has worked for their employer for at

least 40 hours in the five week before a public holiday they areentitled to paid leave on that public holiday. If the part-timeemployee is due to work on that public holiday they are entitledto one of the following:an extra day’s pay,or a paid day off within a month of the public holidayor an extra day’s annual leaveEmployment law can be a complex and confusing maze ofrights and obligations. But when it comes to working part-timeyou should find yourself on the same footing as full-timers.

Blarney Walking Group head eastBlarney walking Group have been on a short lapeastwards again climbing high mountains in Englandand Wales. The group of eleven left Cork for their first stop Carlisle near the

Scottish Border. With an early start and not a cloud in the sky thegroup continued to The Lake District. This was a magical journey onnarrow country roads with mountains and valleys all around.Booting up and out with the map, through some green fields with

small sturdy black sheep happily grazing and then onwards andupwards to climb Scafall Pike (3200 feet) the highest mountain inEngland. Good progress was made with conditions perfect.Back to the mini bus after our climb, a quick change and the long

journey southwards to Wrexham in East Wales. After another early start we were off to Snowdonia National Park inNorth Wales. Our walk began at pen-y-pass and ended at the top ofMount Snowdon at 3600 ft, where believe it or not, there was arestaurant! The summit was buzzing with visitors all taking advantageof the splendid Autumnal weather. So now with our challenge successfully completed it was back toWrexham, weary but elated. This was the groups second four day trip away this year, the first

being in March. To the eleven who travelled, to our drivers who made it all possible, and to the leaders we give many, many thanks.

Last year was an extremely successfulyear for Whitechurch Macra. It was ourfirst time in several years that we tookpart in the Amateur Drama Competitionand we surprised even ourselves bytaking runners-up position in the NationalFinal. We have just started planning forthis year’s one-act production and we’reactively looking for anyone interested inacting/back-stage help/ lights/curtains –no experience is required and wewelcome everybody to give it a go! Withthe gifted Patrick O’Callaghan asproducer and a mix of both experiencedand novice actors and crew, hopes areagain high for a second successful andenjoyable year at the drama competition.Back in April Whitechurch DramaCast displayed their talents by puttingon an award winning performance ofThe Warmth of the Sun for one lasttime in aid of CASA. All proceeds onthe evening went to this worthy charity.CASA is a voluntary organisation, whosegoal is developing friendships and socialoutlets for people with disabilitiesthrough a variety of social activities. We

recently presented a cheque of onethousand euro’s to CASA at one of theirmany social events in the AmbassadorHotel.Whitechurch Macra weredelighted to have been announced thewinners of the Seandun Round ofBowling. With 14 teams taking part, competition was very intense, but our‘pro bowlers’ were more than able for thetask and took the title with style. Theteam is already looking forward to theNational Finals which will take place inTullamore in November. The following week we competed in theSeandun Round of the ImpromptuDebating. For this particular debatingcompetition both teams have 30 minutesto prepare their arguments before a verylively and entertaining debate. Bernie O’Mahony, John O’ Sullivan and Victor O’Sullivan represented the club and camehome with our 2nd title of the year. Theteam debated two motions on the nightand past Macra members from the regionwere present to judge the competition andhighly praised the Whitechurch team for avery well executed debate. Hopes are

high for the team to make it through theAll-Ireland Semi-Final.Last month Whitechurch Macra tookpart in the Seandun Regional Round ofthe Men’s 7-a-side Gaelic FootballCompetition. With a mixture ofexperienced footballers and enthusiasticnovices lining out, an interesting andenjoyable tournament was played. Wecomfortably defeated Carrigaline in thefirst round with a healthy margin. In thesecond round we narrowly lost to Kinsalein an intense and competitive contest.Although disappointed, our panel of tenleft with heads held high after a greatperformance.Well done to our Novice Debating teamconsisting of Shane Sherlock, MickSpillane and Stephen Sexton whocompeted in the Cork County Round. They opposed the motion, ‘Christmas haslost its meaning’ in a tough debate againstDonoughmore Macra. Although themotion was carried, the Whitechurch trioaccounted excellently for themselves withsome very well constructed argumentsand some light humour to top it off. Welldone again to the team and we’re surethey’ll be back again next year.At the end of September ourCommittee attended Club OfficerTraining. This was a great weekend inwhich we were provided with trainingand skills needed and required for ourvarious club positions such as Chair,Secretary, Treasurer and PRO. Trainingover the weekend included variousworkshops in motivation, teamwork, delegation and programme planning. This Month also proves to be a verybusy month for the club.We will attendthe National Conference (Rally) onOctober the 22nd to the 25th which willtake place in the Radisson Hotel, LittleIsland. The National Conference isalways one of the highlights of the Macrayear. This year there will be a fancy dresscompetition so the club will be gettingcreative to come up with a winningcostume for the night. This years themewill get members thinking as they mustcome up with a costume for the theme “Ican’t believe you wore that”. It is alwaysa great event for new members to comealong to. If anyone knows of anyoneinterested in coming along to this eventdo not hesitate to contact us.Whitechurch Macra is a club foranybody aged 17-35 years. We partakein Drama, Sports, Debating & PublicSpeaking, Variety Shows, Travel andmuch more. You can find us onFacebook or contact Ciara Lynch on087-9742561 or [email protected]

It’s not just rugby they practice out atMuskerry RFC but French too!Amidst the ‘au revoirs’ heard on departure from Berrings and Tower as the under 13squad from Muskerry RFC boarded the bus to take them to Cork airport on a wetand cold Friday morning earlier this month you could have thought the Muskerrymen had been practicing their French language skills almost as much as theirrucking and mauling. For here were 21 young fellas about to fly out to the town ofRodez in the south of France to participate in the international Top 12 rugbyweekend event.

The Top 12 is a prestigious under 13 rugby tournament comprising of 40 teams froma variety of countries. 2011 was the fifth year that Muskerry RFC have participatedin the event and this year a squad of 21 players and 27 supporters made the journeyfrom Berrings with team coaches Tom O’Leary and Howard Grice.Normally found playing in mud, rain and high winds at their grounds in Ballyanlythe Muskerry men had to adapt to hard ground and temperatures as high as 30degrees when they took to the training grounds on the Saturday afternoon for theirpractice matches with Firenze RFC of Italy and Castille Y Leon from Spain. Therewas little doubt that both the high quality of rugby that was in evidence and top

temperatures would prove challenging factors for thetournament that was to take place the following day.Sunday morning brought another bright blue sky withgolden sun and the teams lined up on the pitch for theopening ceremony. As each country’s national anthemwas played there were a few folks who appeared to havesomething in their eye such was the emotion of theoccasion. Muskerry had been pooled with four otherFrench teams for their mornings sport; Aviron Bayonnais,Nice Cote d’Azur, Colomiers and Six Fournais. Thiswasn’t going to be easy but Muskerry RFC are notknown for being a forgiving opposition and althoughbeaten in each of the mornings games proudly heldFrench rugby giants Bayonnais and Colomiers to a onepoint difference in each game.

After a spot of lunch the Munster men foundthemselves in a more international pool for the afternoon. With some great examples of strong forward play andopen running rugby from their backs the lads drew intheir games against Los Teros of Argentina and TVSHeidelberg of Germany and enjoyed winning successagainst Rodez of France and Belfast RFC.

To have the opportunity to play teams from such awide variety of countries was a great treat for the lads ofInniscarra parish and a fantastic example of sportreaching out across different cultures. New friends weremade, a lot of fun was had and although Muskerry RFCmight not be a familiar name in international rugbycircles it’s a name that will be remembered by the teamsthey met under the blue skies of Rodez.

Squad members: Jamie Brown, Donal Og Coleman,Jack Desmond, Stephen Desmond, Shane Godsil, LewisGrice, Sean Healy, David Kiely, Emmet Leen, EoghanMaher, Darragh McNamara, Callum Morris, BrendanO'Connell, Derry O'Connor, Matthew O'Leary, EamonO'Mahony, Sean O'Riordan, Jack Riordan, Jude RussellMcEnaney, David Thompson & Cian Walshe

All teams up and runningMuskerry’s pitches at Inniscarra Community centre are ahive of activity at 10.30 on Saturday mornings as themini rugby season is in full swing. Mini rugby caters forU7’s to U12’s. Our youth teams (U13-U19) have somechallenge games under their belt and are relishingforthcoming league games. Our two adult teams have hada promising pre-season and are looking forward to theirforthcoming league campaigns. For more information onany of our teams please go to www.muskerryrugby.com

Eclipse Ireland Adventure Centre inBlackwater Bridge, near Kenmare, iswell known as a Kerry destinationresort. It has catered to families andgroups for the past several years, offering so many activities that there isalways something for everyone toenjoy.Their activities include archery, mud surfing,

orienteering, a boot camp assault course, teambuilding activities, fishing, cycling, and ponytrekking, all on their own 90 acres of land. Thereis also a large hot tub, sauna and steam roomavailable, along with a conference room. Manypeople stay for a week or more in one ofEclipse’s beautiful four star holiday homes anddo different activities each day of their stay.Recently Eclipse has expanded the equestriandivision, opening their School of Horsemanship.Eclipse has a beautiful facility, with riding trailson their own property so riders can get out of thearena without having to compete with cars on theroad and with an arena that has all weatherfooting, so lessons can be held no matter howmuch rain has come down. The Eclipse Ireland School of Horsemanship is

dedicated to expanding the knowledge ofhorsemen in many different areas. They areoffering lessons in general riding, show jumping, dressage, vaulting and natural horsemanship.Their senior instructor is Karen Vicencio, aCalifornian who moved to Ireland ten years ago.Karen’s students have had success nationally inthe United States and in Ireland in workinghunters, show jumping, dressage, and carriagedriving, along with western riding. Karen alsohad the opportunity to work with Tom Dorrancein the United States, Tom being a mentor ofnumerous world famous horsemen including PatParelli, Monty Roberts, and Buck Brannaman.Tom taught a natural method of horsemanship, which Karen learned, and discovered to be a veryuseful and effective method of training horses.

This summer Eclipse started their new vaultingprogram. The sport of vaulting, basicallygymnastics on horseback, is an ancient sportpracticed by horsemen for hundreds of years. Itoriginated as a way of helping people to learnbalance and flexibility to improve their riding, and it evolved into a sport. It is an internationalsport, where there will be one to three peopledoing gymnastics movements on a moving horse.Vaulting is suitable for all ages and levels, as it isinitially learned on a stationary vaulting horse(not a real one). Then the vaulters progress to astanding horse, then trotting, and then cantering.Girls usually love vaulting because they lovebeing around the horses, and find the gymnasticsfun. Boys love the excitement of eventuallybeing able to leap on and off a moving horse. For anyone who rides a horse, vaulting can

improve their ridingability by greatlyimproving their balanceand flexibility. Vaultingis very popular in Europeand the United States, but is just in its infancyin Ireland.

Eclipse has a winterprogram of variouscourses and clinics, which are now takingbookings. They are alsooffering customizedEquestrian packages forpeople who wish to dointensive courses toimprove their skills in ashort period of time.Since so many other non-equestrian activities areoffered, there are thingsfor non-horsey familymembers to do as well.

The Eclipse Schoolof Horsemanship will beholding a Parelli NaturalHorsemanship workshoptaught by certified Parelliinstructor Sarah Brady

on October 22 and 23 for anyone interested inlearning the very effective natural methods ofhorse training. Horseman can watch the clinic,or avail of a limited number of spots where theycan bring and work with their own horses.Natural Horsemanship is based on using thehorse’s own thought processes and bodylanguage. Once a human learns why horses dowhat they do, and how they communicate witheach other, it’s possible to do nearly anythingwith a horse.Eclipse is also hosting a fall Pony and Activitycamp, October 31 to November 4.
