TheCarShow&CruiseGuide Issue #60

What happened to the 2020 Car Show Season?

Usually when I write the column for the August/Septem-ber edition of Car Show & Cruise Guide I do so in early July. It is usually hot as hell outside and as things slow down a bit because of the heat, we have time to think back on the first half of the car show season. For some of us, we did our best to keep the dust from collecting on our cars, and got out and at least drove them. Some of you just were not ready yet to be in a social setting, and that is fine also. For me and many of my friends, we have done our best to enjoy our favorite past time while practicing social distancing. During normal times, we all would be planning on what shows to go to in the second half of the season right now. Nothing is normal right now, but if you are able to join me, let’s do our best to get out and try to enjoy our cars the second half of 2020.

It looks like a few more shows and cruises are beginning to happen, even though I continue to get cancellations. The show list is a little longer this time, and I have done my best to reach out to the folks that put on the cruises for their updates. Our new listings are as accurate as can be during these trying times. Remember we will update the events on our site regularly. That makes the magazines website your best source for up to

date show listings in the area. I don’t know why, but after 11 years of doing this, I still have to remind folks that the listings are free in the magazine and on our website, but you need to send them to me. I continue to see several shows posted on Facebook that are not in the magazine. If you would take the extra step and type up a listing, or email a copy of the flyer to me you’ll get 10 times the amount of exposure for your event.

I hope our second part of the 2020 season brings us together, reminiscing about the good old days of past while showing off our cars that mean so much to us. There is so much happening right now to distract us, I almost hate to turn on the news anymore. Virus, protests, and politics are all things I try to forget about when in my car, hope it’s the same for you. I for one appreciate the efforts of those whom try to put on safe events for us to attend. Fall is usually the best part of the year for shows, I hope this year doesn’t disappoint. The most important thing right now is for all of us to stay safe & healthy so we can look forward to a better year in 2021 together.

Yesterday, I went to one of my favorite shows to attend, Chryslers at Carlisle. It wasn’t as big as past years, but every-one looked like they appreciated having the event to attend. I caught up with some old friends, made a few new ones, and saw a Charger UTE that I would love to own, just don’t know

how the Bed Bug would feel about that! I’ll end this with: I hope you can get out and make some new memories this fall, and have something to remember about 2020 that was good. I’m doing that, and starting to look forward to 2021 when I hope things start to really return to normal.

Again, visit our site regularly, like our Facebook page, and please stay safe & healthy,

– Dave

A Message from Dave

Many events in this publication were sent in before all this Corona Virus mess changed our world- While I hope we can have all the listed events, please don’t count on it. I did my best to contact all the remaining listing to make sure they are still having their event. It is in your best interest to check first before driving to a show or cruise - Dave carcruiseguide.com

Our oldest son has moved from Baltimore to Athens, GA. for a new job and life adventure… So my wife Lorri, son Stetson and I headed south to help him move in. After a grueling 11-hour trip we arrived in Georgia. During our visit we browsed thru the town, hit a pretty cool local antique store Archi-pelago Antiques and ate breakfast at a local brunch restaurant, Mama’s Boy, which is considered a local favorite. Because of Covid-19, we didn’t so-calize, but since we were so close to Atlanta, we figured we’d take a drive there and check it out.

Well, since I’m a total car guy, I talked my wife into taken a chance and go to Fuller Moto Co. Custom Cars and Motorcycles Contractors. The owner, Brian Fuller is a master Builder, Designer, TV Personality (“Caffeine & Octane” and “Two Guys Garage”), and author of how-to-build books. He has his own publishing Company, Full-Bore Publishing. We weren’t sure if the shop would be open due to social distancing.

As we pulled in their parking lot we saw Phil Cato’s 1957 International Metro Van that was built by Phil’s former employer, Martin Brothers Cus-

toms in Texas. You probably saw it built on the Motor Trend Channel’s “Iron Resurrection”. So, we took a chance and we were welcomed into the shop. We were able to meet Cato, a famous cus-tom upholholsterer. He allowed us to walk around the shop, take photos of some of the projects he and Brian are working on and some of the finished pieces. Unfortunately, Fuller was out of town on this visit.

There was one ’39 Ford Coupe powered by a Hemi, and we were asked not to post due to an up-coming show that will feature it. A very kool build I hope to post in the future.

I found out with my trip to SEMA, most car guys just love talking CARS ! And, some are

above the rest...It might have been be-cause it was towards the end of the day, on a Friday but Phil Cato has to be one of the most approachable, friendly car personally I’ve met. Once I introduced my wife and I, it was like talking to an old friend. I asked if I could walk around the shop and get some photos. Phil said, No problem! just don’t post the ‘39 Ford with the eight stack injected Coyote power plant, because it’s supposed to be unveiled in an upcoming show. When I get the okay, I will post the pics. I did get some photos of “Thundertaker” (right) Brian’s BIGGEST project to date.

I saw a sign that read, hats $10 and asked if there was someone available to purchase a sou-venier of the shop. Phil answered, They’ve gone home ! Just take what you want. I grabbed two a gave him $20. Didn’t want to take advantage of the situation. But, he did give me a couple of his

hand made leather key chains. We drove back to the hotel in Athens, about an

hour away. As I pulled in the driveway I received a message from Phil. The message read that it was a pleasure to meet you and your wife. Come back anytime your in the area. Very Kool Guy.

After purchasing a couple of souvenirs and a custom handbag for my wife, we were on our way. We’ll take them up on the invitation to stop by any time. Hopefully, on our return trip, we will get to talk to Brain Fuller and check out any other shops in the area.

Until then.

12 Car Show & Cruise Guide

Well it finally happened… The cruising season got off to a less than appealing start! Most of the events that we

all look forward to have been canceled or postponed and maybe even postponed again! I won’t get into the long and short of what’s going on, but hopefully you’re making do with what we have!

As you can guess, fundraising has been a little tough for us here at the foundation this year. Thanks to the fine people over at Harford Vineyard and Win-ery… We are now having two cruises per month plus our car show. The cruises take place on the first and third Saturday of each month through October. Stop over to enjoy some company, some wine and maybe make a donation to the foundation if you can!

We had no applicants for our scholarship this year. The board has elected to award the same monies that

we would have given to a new scholarship recipient to a past one. You may recall Bill Bandy, he is the young man that was so interested in McPherson College that he used his own money to go check it out and also took part in the mini session that we sent him to. He is now a full-time student there and is maintaining a 4.0 GPA. This award will help offset his cost of books and school supplies.

We here at the foundation sincerely hope that you and your loved ones are well during this crazy time!!

I hope to see you out and about somewhere and of course……

..... See you on the return road- Doug

Before there was John Force, there was Dick Landy and his altered-wheelbase 1965 Dodge Hemi Coronet AFX dragster. The Dick Landy Dodge is a drag-racing legend as it holds a unique place in the sport’s history.NHRA banned them pretty much right away, but Landy’s car, along with 11 other Hemi-powered Chryslers — five more Coronets, and six Plymouth Satellites — made names for themselves in AHRA Super Stock. This photo was taken at Long Island Dragway in 1965. Look what’s parked behind it – the Hemi Under Glass Cuda.

Alden O’Brien’s‘48 Chevy Stylemaster

This project has been on quite a journey. Originally a PA car, a military man bought the car and disassembled it at Aberdeen Prov-ing Grounds in the 90’s. A body-off restoration was started, but halfway through was moved to an Essex garage where the original Stovebolt Six and 3 speed were rebuilt. The body was sent to Glen Rock, PA to fix the body, which was very solid to begin with. It was painted the orig-inal Live Oak Green in a barn with a plastic sheet spray booth. The body was then mated to the frame back in Essex, where a domestic dispute was brewing; not sure if it was over the car, but it did result in the car sitting for many years until the divorce was final and the car had to go.

I didn’t have a lot of experience with car restoration, but I knew all the hard stuff was done. I built some model car kits when I was younger, so I just figured this is a really big metal one, and I was going to save the car no matter what it took. Like many, I had plen-ty of freinds willing to

help with the project, includ-ing my very supportive wife, Cheryl, who helped with the interior.

I added a few modern up-grades for reliability and driveability, like a 3:55 gearset, a 12 volt electric system, HEI electronic ignition from Summit, stainless fuel and brake lines, tube headers and dual exhaust, Rhino coating on the frame and floor, and a CD player with Bluetooth.

When it hasn’t been to a show in a while, we take it to the grocery store and get lots of smiles.

Have a Car or Truck with an interesting story? Or some cool old photos? Why not share it with our readers and see it printed in the magazine!
