My Connection With Cameron I was born in Cameron on October 23, 1923 to Selmer and Tilda Simenson. My paternal grandfather was Ole Simenson who ran the local hotel shown in the photo below. THE SIMENSONS Simen and Mariet Hanson came from Foldarn Valley, Norway, in 1890 with one son, Ole. Some of their children preceeded them in the immigration to America. They settled in Porters Mills, Wisconsin where the parents remained for the duration of their lives. Of their seven children, five of them came to Cameron: Ma- rie (Mauseth). Ole, John, Ida (Roe), and Oline (Egstad).Ole was employed by various saw- mills in this part of the state. In 1900, at the age of 32, he came to Cameron and clerked in the the Mauseth and Roe store. About 1904, he rented the Old Wisconsin Hotel and operated a restaurant on the main floor and rented out upstairs rooms. In 1906 he purchased the Johnson and Swenson store that had moved up from Old Cameron and after much remodeling opned it as the new East Hotel. This he operated until 1927. During his years in the hotel business, he was licensed to guide fishing and hunting parties. It was reported that he was a cordial guide and hotel host. Ole married Christina Jacobson in 1894. They had seven children, Selmer (my dad), Melvin, Norman, Edna, Thelma, Marie, and Ingebret. None of the children remained in the Cameron area. Operation Break Through has a new location. WITC is now hosting Operation Break Through in Room 131 every Monday night 6-8pm. Operation Break Through is a program where vets help vets break through the barriers of readjustment. Veterans of all eras are invited to come help fellow veterans. There is no counselor or therapist, just vets helping vets. Because of veterans’ experience going through readjust-ment, they are uniquely positioned to assist fellow veterans who may face the same issues.

Often, veterans in readjustment need a peer to listen to them and offer support and advice. “This program is not about asking for help”, says Monika Audette, Program Operations Leader, “This program is about veterans who are adjusting to civilian life coming together to support their fellow veterans.”

Volunteers and Veterans say the program is a success and encour-age more veterans to come check it out. Operation Break Through successfully serves vets of all ages and service terms. “Recent vets and older vets have all benefitted from the group,” said veterans and volunteers, “Everyone is so warm and accepting”. “Come and make a good connection”, said a Breakthrough Buddy who mentors veterans in the program, “you will receive as much as you give.”

“The program is also different for BCRJP because it is not only con-nected with the criminal justice system while many of BCRJP’s other programs are,” says Audette. “This program is for any veteran adjust-ing after military service or in-between tours. All veterans are invited to be part of Operation Break Through.”

Benefits of participating include: peer support, connection with the veteran community and services for veterans in Barron County, re-sources for stable housing, employment, and to reduce family tension, and successful transition to life after military service. The program meets Mondays 6-8pm at WITC in Rice Lake, Room 131.

For more information and for registration, call 715-736-0940 or email [email protected]. There is no fee to participate.

YOUR DAILY BANK"If you had a bank that credited your account each morning with $86,400, that carried over no balance, from day to day, and allowed you to keep no cash in your account, and ev-ery evening cancelled whatever part of the amount you had failed to use during the day, what would you do? Draw out every cent, of course! Well you have such a bank, and its name is 'Time." Every morning it credits you with 86,400 seconds. Ev-ery night it rules off, as lost, whatev-er of this you have failed to invest to good purpose. It carries over no bal-ances. It allows no overdrafts. Each day it opens a new account with you. Each night it burns to records of the day. If you fail to use the day's depos-its the loss is yours. There is no go-ing back. There is no drawing against the "tomorrow." You must live in the present -on today's deposits. in-vest it so as to get from it the utmost in health, happiness and success!"

You can't control the length of your life but you can control its width and depth.

NEWS AROUNDTOWN

What is your pH? ~ by Farmacist BrandonThe concept of pH was first introduced by Dr. Sorensen at the Carlsberg Laboratory in 1909. pH stands for “potential of Hydrogen” which is the measure of hydrogen-ion concentration in a solution. pH is measured on a scale from 0 to 14 in refer-ence to the acidity or alkalinity of a solution. In this context, the word “solution” simply means something mixed with water. A pH of 7 is considered to be neutral while a pH of less than 7 is more acidic and a pH higher than 7 is more alkaline. If you mix acid with water, for example, the pH of the solution will be less than 7 – if you mix an alkaline with water the pH of the solu-tion will be greater than 7. Many studies have associated types of diseases and chronic conditions with a body that is more acidic than alkaline. This may indicate that the body should be slightly alkaline for optimal health. The foods that we eat become mixed in a solution with the water in our bodies. This is significant because the human body is about 70% water. For optimal health, the pH of the body’s fluid should stay within normal ranges. The normal pH balance in the human body is 7.35 to 7.45, which is slightly on the alkaline side of the pH scale. A good formula is to consume 75% alkaline ood and 25% acidic food; this will put you on a path to maintaining a healthy pH balance. When we talk about foods in this context, we’re talking about the result in the body of eating the foods, not nec-essarily the pH of the foods themselves before we eat them.Examples of alkaline foods include most fruits and vegetables along with water and vegetable juices. Acidic foods, in general, are meat, dairy, junk food, processed food, fast food, alcohol, drugs and medications. There are some exceptions in each category so if you have an interest, we encourage you do a little research so you’ll have a better understanding of alkaline foods and acidic foods and with a little planning it will be easy to choose foods to improve your body’s pH balance, which will improve your health. For information on a local outlet for pH drinking water, call Marilyn at 715-236-1855

If you have traveled on Hiway 53 between Cameron and Chetek, you may have seen a red barn on the east side of the road with a big smiley face on the silo. That's where they live. They have been married for 57 years and are still madly in love with each other (by my personal observation.) The photo was taken at the Jody Klump (Cameron notable) and John Svoma wed-ding reception. Congratulations to them.

Linda's CornerSummer's warmth is but a fleeting memory as autumn leaves come raining down. A chill is felt in the air and a warm, comfy sweater feels oh, so good to wear.

The bounty of summer has been stored away to be brought out later on a cold winter's day. Sweltering heat of summer has given way to fresh, crisp air. We are reenergized and go about our fall's work without a care.

Raking colorful leaves does not seem like quite a chore, plant-ing bulbs to await the warm breath of spring makes it almost fun to be outdoors.

Soon all will be covered with a blanket of white, Jack Frost will also be busy doing his window delights.

Ole's FarmGovernment surveyors came to Ole's farm in the fall and asked if theycould do some surveying. Ole agreed, and Lena even served them a nicemeal at noon time. The next spring, the two surveyors stopped by and told Ole, "Because you were so kind to us, we wanted to give you this bad news in person instead of by letter."Ole replied, "What's the bad news?" The surveyors stated, "Well, after our work here, we discovered yourfarm is not in Minnesota but is actually in Wisconsin!"Ole looked at Lea and said, "That's the best news I have heard in a long time. I just told Lena this morning that I don't think I can take another winter in Minnesota."

BARRON SPOTLIgHTERSThe next production which opens on October 10, is Dairy of Anne Frank. The story tells of a 14 year-old Jewish girl and seven others who hid from Nazi persecution in a concealed storage attic in Amsterdam for nearly a year.Their story, captured on the pages Anne's diary, reveals the claustrophobic realities of their daily existence - their fear, their hope, their laughter, and their grief. All performances are at the Barron Area Community Center. Perfor-mances will be Oct. 10 at 7:30 pm, Oct. 11, 12, 18 and 19 at 7:30 pm and Oct. 20 at 2 pm. Email [email protected] or call 715-537-9212.. My friend Mary Schewe is one of the cast members and two folks from Cameron, Jodie Swanson and Steve Demars.

ANNUAL ALL VETS PICNIC

Many local veterans and their fami-lies enjoyed great weather as they joined together on Sun., Sept. 8 at Airport Park in Chetek for the An-nual All Vets Picnic. The host orga-nizations were the Chetek American Legion, VFW Post, Amvets, and their Ladies Auxiliaries.

Local Commanders present at the picnic were: (L toR) Dept. Commander, Ken Rynes; District Commander, Ed Cooper; County Com-mander, Cal Briggs; Post Commander, Dawn Anderson.Thank you for your service veterans.

Karen Schauf, the coordinator of the affair, closed the meeting by reading a prayer writ-ten by Barron Mayor Dave Vruwink.

About 50 residents gathered together on the lawn of the Barron County Justice Center to pray for America on the anniversary of 9/11. The speakers were: Joleen Helbig, Cumberland, Wisconsin's coordinator for the National Day of Prayer; Rev. Brian Weaver, Living Hope Church, Ridgeland; Bill Balts, Barron business man; Connie Riplinger, director of the Pregnancy Help Center of Rice Lake; Rev. Jeff Martin of the Refuge in Chetek, pastor Steve Svendsen of the Reformed Baptist Church of Rice Lake and Chaplain Steve Timm of the Army National Guard. ***************************************************************** When God solves your problems, you have faith in His abilities: when God doesn't solve your problems, He has faith in your abilities. It was Rudyard Kipling who said, "I always prefer to believe the best of every-body; it saves so much trouble."

VOLUNTEERS WANTEDif you love to visit with people and have spare time on your hands you may want to think about how rewarding your help and companionship would be to a senior or an adult with a disability who would like to get a friendly visit once in awhile. During a visit you may want to play cards or a board game or write letters or holiday cards or help the person make a meal or bake cookies. Provide a visit once a week or a few hours a month just to brighten up someone's life. If inter-ested, contact Vicky at Volunteer Services of Barron County at 715-236-2184 for more info. There are folks in the Cameron area who would welcome such a service.
