On behalf of the Freedman family and the team at Markdel, I am thrilled to have you join us for what will be a fabulous day of racing fun, entertainment and good company – all in the name of raising funds for a very worthy cause.

The ‘focus’ Group is one very close to my heart; for a long time now they have cared for my mentally handicapped brother, Mark. Focus does an outstanding job caring for families in the community with handicapped children, brothers and sisters, and has been an important part of our extended family for over two decades.

1. A unique item of thoroughbred racing and breeding memorabilia – A framed copy of the noted catalogue from 1986 when champion miler Super Impose was purchased by the Freedman Brothers. This special piece is accompanied by a hand written note from Lee Freedman about why Super was a favourite horse of the stable.

2. A modern day piece of history – Two shoes worn by superstar sprinter Miss Andretti when she was victorious in the Lightning and Australia Stakes, framed and accompanied by a hand written note from Lee Freedman about this special mare.

3. A spectacular one of a kind – The first mask ever made to celebrate the success of three-time Melbourne Cup winning mare, Makybe Diva. This exquisite piece, created by Melbourne milliner Paris Kyne, was created prior to the Diva’s final race in 2005 and was part of the connections celebrations. A hand written note from Lee Freedman accompanies this beautiful mask, explaining why she was one of the greatest thoroughbreds the country will ever see.

1. Danasinga (Mick Dittman)Major wins: 1996 Group 1 Stradbroke

Handicap (1400), Eagle Farm.

Lee’s comment: A well-bred and very tough horse who took a lot of work to keep him fit. Also ran second in the 1996 Doncaster Handicap and he has proven himself an outstanding stallion in New Zealand and Australia.

2. Durbridge (Simon Marshall)Major wins: 1994 G1 Australian Cup; 1995

G1 George Main Stakes; 1994 G1 AJC Queen

Elizabeth Stakes; 1994 G1 Doomben Cup;

1993 G1 C.F. Orr Stakes.

Lee’s comment: We got Durbridge after he already had proven himself a top class horse, but his career was at the crossroads. He was a terrific horse to have around the stables, and when he could dictate his own race he was virtually unbeatable at weight-for-age between 1600m and 2000m.

3. Encosta De Lago (Steven King)Major wins: 1996 G1 VicHealth Cup; 1996 G2 Ascot

Vale Stakes; 1996 G2 Bill Stutt Stakes.

Lee’s comment: Encosta De Lago is one of the most gifted horses I have trained, so it is no surprise that he has become a champion stallion. He was an imposing colt with a magnificent action and turn of foot, traits he has passed on to his offspring. His win in the VicHealth Cup was miraculous. Injury curtailed his racing career, but it probably helped him as a stallion.

Race 1 The Crown Mile (1600m)

4. Flying Spur (Glen Boss)Major wins: 1995 G1 Golden Slipper

Stakes; 1996 G1 All Aged Stakes; G1 1996

Cadbury Guineas.

Lee’s comment: He was a big, raw headstrong colt who was a natural galloper. He was in the paddock two weeks before the 1995 Golden Slipper but a change of plans saw him win brilliantly. He trained on to win twice at Group 1 level over 1600m as a 3YO. He had everything needed to make a top class stallion – pedigree, performance and conformation.

5. Marble Halls (NZ) (Jim Cassidy)Major wins: 1998 G1 Toorak Handicap; 1997 G2

Craiglee Stakes; 1997 G2 Turnbull Stakes; 1997

G3 Doomben Classic.

Lee’s comment: Came to us as a maiden from New Zealand but made an immediate impact, winning four of his first six starts and running second in the G1 Queensland Derby. As his records suggests, he was a top class horse around 1600m to 2000m, both at weight-for-age and under handicap conditions.

6. Mr Murphy (Damien Oliver)Major wins: 2001 G1 Cadbury Guineas; 2001 G1

Futurity Stakes; 2001 G1 Eat Well Live Well Cup.

Lee’s comment: He had an outstanding 12 months in 2001 when he won three Group 1 races. Superior around 1400m to 1600m. He trained on for a long career in which he lumped big weights to win.

7. Northwood Plume (Rod Griffiths)Major wins: 1994 G1 Thousand Guineas; 1994 G1

VRC Oaks; 1995 G1 Ansett Australia Stakes.

Lee’s comment: Shrewdly selected as a yearling by Barrie Griffiths. She was the champion filly of her generation - only the very best fillies win the Thousand Guineas-Oaks double in the Melbourne spring, and she was dominant.

8. Poetic King (Noel Callow)Major wins: 1994 G1 VicHealth Cup; 1996 G1

Manikato Stakes: 1996 G1 Toorak Handicap.

Lee’s comment: Probably one of the most underrated horses I have trained. He won three Group 1 races stretched over three seasons. He was brilliant on his day. He is still part of the team at Markdel, as a lead pony for the fillies and mares.

9. Runyon (IRE) (Brent Thomson)Lee’s comment: Imported by the Segenhoe boys – Sissian, Peterson, Bott and Grimley. He has the distinction of being the first son of champion sire Sadler’s Wells to win a Group 1 race in Australia – his record would have been better – and my bank account healthier – but for positive swab to an ointment after winning the 1993 G2 Craiglee Stakes.

10. Sharscay (Darren Gauci)Major wins: 1995 G1 Underwood Stakes.

Lee’s comment: Only with me a short time, but a very good horse. He was hot favourite – and I thought he was a certainty – to win the 1995 Caulfield Cup but he broke down after a track gallop in the week before the race. As it was, we won the cup with our “second stringer” Doriemus.

11. Sphenophyta (NZ)(Danny Nikolic)Major wins: 2006 G1 Turnbull Stakes.

Lee’s comment: He was bought after winning the Ipswich Cup. His Turnbull Stakes win was an outstanding performance as he put in two or three runs in the race. Underrated horse whose career was curtailed by injury.

12. Super Impose (NZ) (Darren Beadman)Major wins: 1992 G1 Cox Plate; 1990 &1991 G1

Doncaster Handicap; 1990 &1991 G1 Epsom

Handicap; 1991 G1 Ranvet Stakes; 1991 & 1992 G1

Chipping Norton Stakes.

Lee’s comment: A great horse, the horse who probably put me on the map in those early years. He was a top class weight-for-age horse, but he was a champion handicapper. I doubt a horse will repeat his four big “Randwick Mile” wins. Memories of the reception he received after winning the 1991 Epsom Handicap still gives me goose bumps.

Lee’s comment: I trained both her sire and her dam, and it was a privilege to train her. Alinghi was an awesome individual who had as much natural ability as any horse I have trained. She was unlucky not to have won the 2004 Golden Slipper. She proved in America that she was world class by winning at Group 3 level – nice to have Edgar Prado back on.

2. Bint Marscay (Mick Dittman)Major wins: 1993 G1 Golden Slipper; 1993 G2

Magic Night Stakes; 1994 G2 Chirnside Stakes.

Lee’s comment: Bint Marscay was probably the most natural two-year-old I have trained and I regard her as the benchmark for our two-year-olds. She won her Golden Slipper on a very limited, and injury-hindered campaign. She came back to win at Group level at three, but her injuries prevented her from training on. She has been a wonderful broodmare, and I won the 2005 G1 Victoria Derby with her grandson, Benicio, and Group races with her granddaughter, Romneya.

3. Danelagh (Danny Nikolic) Major wins: 1998 G1 Blue Diamond Stakes.

Lee’s comment: A home-bred filly owned by Keith Biggs and his WA pack. She was very strong winning the Blue Diamond Stakes and I thought she could win the Slipper, but Biggsy almost drowned when frolicking in the pool on the eve of the race and put a mocker on her.

She has proven to be a champion broodmare, leaving behind the likes of G1 winners Vengeance Of Rain and Dizelle.

4. Danzero (Wayne Harris)Major wins: 1994 G1 Golden Slipper;

1994 G3 Blue Diamond Prelude; 1994 Listed

McNeil Quality.

Lee’s comment: I bought him as a yearling because my father owned and trained his grandmother, and bred his mother. He was from Danehill's first crop and he wasn't the most handsome yearling, but he developed into a magnificent colt. He was a tough colt who was probably bigger and stronger than his rivals as a two-year-old. He had problems that hindered his 3YO career, but he has proven to be a wonderful stallion.

5. Gold Ace (Steven King)Major wins: 1996 G1 Lightning Stakes;

1996 G1 The Galaxy; 1996 G1 Salinger Stakes.

Lee’s comment: An outstanding galloper who should have won the Magic Millions as a 2YO. He trained on, despite some severe and on-going injuries, to be the best sprinter of 1996. His wins in The Galaxy and the Salinger Stakes were brilliant performances.

6. Mahogany (Greg Hall)Major wins: 1993 G1 Caulfield Guineas; 1993

G1 Victoria Derby; 1994 G1 Cadbury Guineas;

1994 G1 AJC Derby; 1995 & 1997 G1 Lightning

Stakes; 1993 G1 QTC Sires’ Produce; 1993 G1

Castlemaine Stakes.

Lee’s comment: Mahogany was a wonderfully versatile and challenging horse to train. While he won two Derbys, he essentially was a brilliant sprinter, which he proved to be as an older horse. I tried to win the Cox Plate first-up with him, and it took a champion 3YO in Octagonal to nose him out. Mahogany would have been a sensational sprinter in Europe – a horse before his time.

Race 2 Markdel Sprint (1200m)

Lee’s comment: Merlene was a brilliant two-year-old who won five of her six starts. She was the type of filly who could have trained on to be a great sprinter like Miss Andretti.

8. Miss Andretti (Craig Newitt)Major wins: 2006 G1 Manikato Stakes;

2007 G1 Australia Stakes; 2007 G1 Lightning

Stakes; 2007 G1 Newmarket Handicap; 2007

The Age Classic; 2007 G2 Royal Ascot King’s

Stand Stakes.

Lee’s comment: As good a sprinter as I have trained. Not only is she a brilliant galloper, but she showed when she won the Newmarket Handicap that she is very tough. It was a lifetime ambition to train a Royal Ascot winner, and Miss Andretti is the horse that helped me achieve it.

9. Royal Asscher (Dwayne Dunn)Major wins: 2007 G3 City Pacific Finance Stakes;

2006 Listed Jayco Stakes; 2007 Listed William

Crockett Stakes.

Lee’s comment: She deserves more credit for her ability than her record suggests. She was a tremendous talent, but a difficult filly to train –she needed the pace on in her races. She could produce sizzling sectionals.

10. Schillaci (Damien Oliver)Major wins: 1992 & 1993 G1 Lightning Stakes;

1992 G1 Oakleigh Plate, 1992 G1 Newmarket

Handicap; 1992 G1 The Galaxy; 1993 & 1995 G1

Futurity Stakes; 1993 G1 George Ryder Stakes.

Lee’s comment: It was Schillaci's longevity that made him great. He competed in all the big races from three to eight. In his latter years, he was never quite right, but he still produced some wonderful performances. Eight Group 1 wins and the autumn Triple Crown speaks for itself.

11. Super Impressive (NZ) (Steven Arnold)Major wins: 2003 & 2005 G3 Standish Handicap;

2001 Listed W.J. Adams Stakes.

Lee’s comment: Probably can be regarded as one of Zabeel’s best sprinters, and he was unlucky not to win a G1 Goodwood Handicap. Gets a guernsey in this field for his ability to win at Stakes level over four seasons, carrying big weights.

12. Universal Queen (Corey Brown)Major wins: 2007 G1 Robert Sangster Stakes;

2007 G2 Yallambee Classic; 2007 G3 The Vanity.

Lee’s comment: Her brother won the G1 AJC Derby but she was a sheer sprinter who was able to overcome some persistent injuries to win at the highest level.

Raffle Prizes

1. Benicio (Noel Callow)Major wins: 2005 G1 AAMI Victoria Derby.

Lee’s comment: He was expected to be a Golden Slipper horse on pedigree but he trained on to win a Classic. I had wonderful success with this family – his granddam Bint Marscay won the 1993 Golden Slipper and his half-sister Romneya is a little gem. Unfortunately, injury stopped his career as he was only coming into his own as a Spring 3YO, who knows what he could have done. I expect him to be a good sire.

2. Don Eduardo (NZ) (Dwayne Dunn)Major wins: 2002 G1 AJC Australian Derby; 2002

G2 Shannons Classic; 2002 Listed Schweppes Cup.

Lee’s comment: Don Eduardo was a far better racehorse than people gave him credit for. He cost a record $3.6 million as a yearling, which meant that there was a lot of media attention and expectation of him. He really showed his talent in a stellar autumn carnival as a 3YO. He won his AJC Australian Derby on his merits. It was a great thrill for the stable to win that Derby for his owner, Mr. Cojuangco.

3. Doriemus (NZ) (Damien Oliver)Major wins: 1995 G1 Melbourne Cup; 1995 G1

Caulfield Cup; 1996 G1 AJC Queen Elizabeth

Stakes; 1996 G2 Turnbull Stakes.

Lee’s comment: He looked like a polo pony when he arrived from New Zealand. But we knew we had something special when he won first-up at Doomben in record time. It was a long range plan to win the 1995 Melbourne Cup, and to also win the Caulfield Cup was a bonus. He was a world-class stayer, right up there in the top three stayers I have trained.

Race 3 Paspaley Cup (2400m)

If it wasn't forMight And Power, he would have won the Cups double again in 1997.

4. Makybe Diva (GB) (Glen Boss)Major wins: 2003, 2004 & 2005 G1 Melbourne

Cup; 2004 G1 Sydney Cup; 2005 G1 The BMW;

2005 G1 Cox Plate.

Lee’s comment: She was the best stayer in the world when she was at her peak. What a wonderful record to win three Melbourne Cups, a Sydney Cup, a BMW and a Cox Plate. It was a privilege to be asked to train her by owner Tony Santic.

5. Mannerism (Rod Griffiths)Major wins: 1991 G1 Australasian Oaks; 1992 G1

Show Day Cup; 1992 G1 Caulfield Cup; 1992 G1

Futurity Stakes; 1991 G2 Feehan Stakes; 1993 G2

Craiglee Stakes.

Lee’s comment: A wonderfully gifted and tough little mare who was very versatile. The spring she won the Caulfield Cup, she also won the Show Day Cup over 1400 metres.

6. Mummify (Danny Nikolic)Major wins: 2003 G1 SA Derby; 2003 G1

Caulfield Cup; 2003 G1 Underwood Stakes;

2004 G1 Yalumba Stakes; 2005 G1 Singapore

International Cup at Kranji.

Lee’s comment: Mummify is a special horse for us. He came along at the right time after our move to Markdel. He was a great campaigner over a long period of time. A lot of people don't realise that when he finished racing, he was in the top 10 Australian stakes earners of all time. He gave me my first international Group 1 success.

7. Naturalism (NZ) (Mick Dittman)Major wins: 1992 G1 Rosehill Guineas; 1992 G1

AJC Derby; 1993 G1 Caulfield Stakes; 1992 G2

Feehan Stakes; 1992 G2 Turnbull Stakes.

Lee’s comment: A brilliant horse. Naturalism had the ability to run sensational sectionals. He should have won Super Impose's 1992 Cox

Plate. Probably his greatest performance was his second in the Japan Cup, as he wasn't really a 2400m horse.

8. Paris Lane (Simon Marshall)Major wins: 1994 G1 Caulfield Cup; 1994 G1

Mackinnon Stakes; 1994 G2 Queensland Guineas.

Lee’s comment: Paris Lane was an amazing horse as he had his legs put on backwards. His Caulfield Cup win was a dominant performance in track record time, and he was a bit stiff in the Melbourne Cup that year.

9. Serenade Rose (NZ) (Steven King)Major wins: 2005 G1 VRC Crown Oaks; 2006 G1

Arrowfield Stud Stakes; 2006 G1 AJC Australian

Oaks; 2005 G2 Edward Manifold Stakes; 2005 G2

Wakeful Stakes.

Lee’s comment: Serenade Rose was the best staying 3YO filly of her year, and she did it in the spring and the autumn. She was tough and she could stay as well as her owners at a long lunch.

10. Special Harmony (Brett Prebble)Major wins: 2003 G1 Thousand Guineas; 2003

G1 VRC Crown Oaks; 2004 G1 Arrowfield Stud

Stakes; 2003 G2 Edward Manifold Stakes; 2004

G2 Moonee Valley Oaks.

Lee’s comment: A big strong filly who dominated in the spring as a 3YO. She returned to win the Arrowfield Stud Stakes at Rosehill in the autumn and then broke down. A measure of her talent is seen in the fact she returned to finish fourth first-up in the G1 Newmarket Handicap as a 4YO, but again she broke down.

11. Subzero (Greg Hall)Major wins: 1992 G1 Melbourne Cup; 1992 G1

South Australian Derby; 1992 G1 Adelaide Cup;

1991 Listed Dulcify Quality.

Lee’s comment: Subzero was bought to win the Magic Millions, but he won a Melbourne Cup! He was a very good handicap stayer who

had a stellar six months in 1992. Unfortunately, like a lot of handicappers of his ilk, he struggled at weight-for-age and he was weighted out of the handicaps after that Cup win.

12. Tawrrific (NZ) (Shane Dye)Major wins: 1989 G1 Melbourne Cup; 1989 G2

ASC St. Leger; 1989 G2 WATC Cox Stakes; 1988

G3 SA St. Leger.

Lee’s comment: A very tough, handicap stayer who won our first Melbourne Cup, and he will always be remembered for that.

‘focus’ Individualised Support Services (formally Kindilan Society) provides services to adults with a disability on, and around, the Mornington Peninsula. ‘focus’ strives to enhance the quality of life for all people receiving services by making available options and experiences that reflect the goals and aspirations of each individual.

‘focus’ provides a range of accommodation options as well as respite, day programs and outreach services. In all of our services, people are encouraged to ‘Live the life they want.’

In order to expand these services beyond what is possible through government funding alone, our organisation is reliant on income that is derived from fundraising events. Today’s Freedman Racing Party provides a unique combination of the well known generosity of the racing community and the untiring support of the Freedman family.
