Sermon Notes Jesus Is, Part 4: Jesus is THE POINT

We’ve been talking about who JESUS really is. Sounds just about what you’d expect in

church, right? ; easy; simple. But here’s the thing: When you start to

really look at who He is, you find out He is .

Here are two very different views of Jesus that feel very different when you hear them.

The first is the Jesus who is the KIND; GENTLE JESUS. (Matthew 11:28-29)

Weary? Heavy burdens? . And He’s offering us REST?

SIGN ME UP! But rest from WHAT?

To understand that, we need to look at the “ .”

The sermon on the mount starts off . (Matthew 5:3-4)

But then Jesus takes a serious turn. (Matthew 5:20) The Pharisees… These guys are the profes-

sional RULE keepers; LAW minders; .

And then it gets worse… (Matthew 5:22) And more uncomfortable yet… (Matthew 5:28-29)

And then the rant continues, until at the end of it all we are left feeling ;

OVERWHELMED; ! Because if that is where God’s bar is set, then we are

what’s referred to as ! And just maybe that’s the point!

Jesus is saying if by the rules, the law, our

own spiritual self-sufficiency (like the Pharisees) then sooner or later we will by them.

But fortunately Jesus has a better idea: “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carry-

ing heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”

In other words, instead of relying on your own , try

trusting in my !

TAKE A REST from trying so hard to be good enough and never quite .

From relying on yourself to make you righteous and

time and again.

TAKE A REST in my GRACE and ! Because compared to how hard (and

fruitlessly) you’ve been working to be “ ” my burden is

light!

The point is not us , Righteousness to

. The point is JESUS doing for us what our self-

righteousness .

The LAW says “ brings acceptance by God.”

JESUS says “Acceptance by God brings .”

RELIGION says “ , believe then you can belong.”

JESUS says “Belong, then believe, then .”

5th grade may join the choir. Practices will be Sunday evenings at 5:00 pm at the church. Our

formance will be August 14, 21, and 28. Please contact Shannon Freyek (219-713-1020) or Liza

Sargent (219-730-2904) if you have any questions. We are looking forward to another fun year

of singing!

Staff Parish Relations: There will be a meeting on Monday, August 8th at 8:00 PM in the Library.

Please check your email for additional information.

FREE Mission Information Dinner on Saturday, August 20 at 6:30 pm in the Fellowship Hall.

Please join us to learn how you can help with the New Methodist Church in the town of West

End on the Island of Roatan. RSVP by August 14 by calling the church office or emailing Bon-

nie at [email protected].

12th Annual Corn Roast, Sunday August 14th Every year, on the front lawn, our church holds

the annual Corn Roast. Some of the fun things to look for are: dunk tank, water slide, jumpy

house, the Crafty Granny’s Baby Elephant Ears, corn on the cob and more games for kids of

all ages. Make your plans now to join us for this fun family event.

Membership Class Our next Membership Class will be August 28th at 3:00 pm in the Parlor. An-

yone interested in finding out more about the church and/or is interested in joining is wel-

come to attend. The meeting will last approximately one hour.

Prayer Request Cards are located in each pew. To submit a prayer request, please fill out the

form and place it in the offering plate. To have the request printed in the weekly bulletin,

please mark “Please print in Sunday morning prayer concerns.” Mark “Please put on Prayer

Chain” to have the request printed on the office copy of the prayer list and emailed to the

Prayer Chain members. To have a pastor contact you, please mark “I would like the Pastor to

pray with me.” If you’d like the information simply shared only with the Pastors and do not de-

sire contact, please just fill out the information and do not mark any of the options. Prayer

requests that are printed in the bulletin will remain in the bulletin for four weeks unless you con-

tact the church office.

Have you ever attended a new church for the first time? Do you remember what it felt like?

Maybe you were nervous or curious, or just unsure. One of the things that we’ve always prid-

ed ourselves on is being a welcoming church and one of the things that is important to being

welcoming is having friendly greeters for our worship services. We have been woefully short

on greeters recently and are hoping that you’ll volunteer to take a Sunday. All you have to

do is show up 15 minutes before your regular worship service, stand at the front door, and wel-

come those who come through our doors! Please stop by the Welcome Center and sign up.

It’s a great opportunity to get to know people we really appreciate your efforts.

Seeking 1 Hour Servants We have several volunteer positions that we could really use your

help with. Each requires about an hour. Every volunteer is so appreciated and we’d bet

you’d be surprised at what one hour can do! Might you be able to spare an hour once in a

while? If so, please contact the church office or a staff member to discuss opportunities.
