Th e Cave Springs Trails and Site Planning Project was completed in cooperation with the Illinois River Watershed Partnership as an educational facility utilizing alternative storm water treatments and best management practices. Th e site includes a green wall, permeable pavements, wetland restoration and riparian zones that extend from the lake boundary in to the surrounding hills.

Th e site study examined the benefi ts of increasing the number of trees by 340. Th e urban heat island aff ect will be reduced by 20-45 degrees, noise is reduced by 50%, and asthma rates fall to 25%. Furthermore, research has shown that adding trees can reduce traffi c accidents by 38%, crime rates by 25% and sick days by 11%.

Dunbar Urban Farm expanded a small existing school garden in to a highly functional, effi cient space through the addition of a green house, hoop houses, a canning and drying shed and composting facilities. Simultaneously, the design features a pear, apple and pecan orchard that serve to create space and provide shade for hot Arkansas summers. Fallen pecan shells form a tactile ground surface that serves to enrich the soil as it decomposes. An art wall weaves throughout the farm, hosting artwork and acting as a planter bed for herbs and other shade tolerant edibles. Th e gazebo acts as both a gathering place and a way-fi nding tool for site visitors.

Th e Morningside New Urbanism plan converts a 67 acre empty lot in to a high density, mixed-used development that would service the community of Fayetteville at large. Narrow streets, curving lanes, street trees and on-street parking act as traffi c calming devices while a continuous sidewalk network and sidewalk system provide for better pedestrian access.

Th e Morningside neighborhood plan examines creating a mix of housing types and footprints to create a diverse neighborhood. Apartments, townhomes, duplexes and single family residents live within yards of each other. Parking is shift ed onto the street to minimize the impact of enormous parking lots on the microclimate and design aesthetics. A series of small parks and courtyards connect the area with a network of green space.

Site analysis for the tactical urbanism project used on-the ground research to determine both perception of safety and space as well as the quality of views. While we both completed on-site analysis, the fi nal graphics were completed by myself.

Largely vacant, the Mr. Burger Tactical Urbanism project employs largely temporary, aff ordable measures to revitalize an under used area directly north of the University of Arkansas campus. Th e design was completed with classmate Chelsea Kennedy and utilizes hay bale gardens, paint and plantings to form spaces and diversify the viewshed. Th e plan was drawn by myself and rendered by Chelsea while perspectives were completed by both.
