Ministry of the Month

“Where words fail, music speaks.” —Hans Christian Anderson

“He who sings prays twice.” —Martin Luther

As humans, there are times in our lives where words fail. Where the soul is incapable of expressing a true feeling

or emotion. And in those times, it is my experience that music and arts can fill the gap. To create a beautiful

painting, to play a symphony, to sing a melody… these, among others, are ways in which the soul can communi-

cate and touch the hearts of others. There are moments of vulnerability and moments of celebration. Moments

of fear and moments of peace. Moments of anger of moments of love.

To be human is a unique and beautiful thing. God created mankind in His image, and He calls us good, because He

is good. And just as our Creator molded and formed mankind from the dirt, and breathed life into Adam’s lungs,

He created in us a desire to create. To express. To share our hearts with mankind through artistic expression.

We create because we are reflections of our Creator.

We are celebrating music ministry as the Ministry of the Month at Fountain of Life. We are inviting you to join us

as we share our hearts with others and create music in honor of our Lord. Our worship style varies from con-

temporary to blended to traditional, because we want to reach our community in whatever way their hearts

speak. So whether you play the guitar or trumpet, sing arias or rock songs, we have a place for you in music min-

istry at Fountain of Life.

Get connected to Jesus through song by signing up on our website www.cometothefountain.com/worship-arts :

Sing in our special events choir this Christmas Eve!

Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings December 6, 13 & 20

from 7:15-8:15pm. You must attend at least 2 out of the 3

rehearsals in order to sing. Call time on Christmas Eve

is 6:00pm for worship at 7:30 pm on December 24.

Let us know what musical instrument you play and Chris Fair

or I will follow up with you and get you plugged in to play for

worship as your schedule allows.

Let us know if you are interested in auditioning

to sing with the Praise Band in worship.

From the Leadership

Procrastination

Since our last newsletter, BoSL and Elders met together, and Mark Winterhoff (head Elder) has an informative

piece summarizing our meeting and next steps in this newsletter, so I was unsure what to add from a BoSL per-

spective. The following is from me instead of from BoSL…

Without a focus on what to write, I continued to procrastinate and am submitting this at the absolute deadline

(sorry Deb!). But, by procrastinating, I bring you thoughts from this past weekend that I would not have had with a more timely newsletter submission.

I would like to thank everyone involved in the FoL Golf outing this Saturday. What a beautiful morning to share

conversation, fellowship, and the occasional good golf shot. No matter the scores, I am blessed to know my fel-

low brothers and sisters in Christ a little more after spending time with folks that I have not had as much interac-

tion with at church. I look forward to the next addition; even if my golf game does not show up, I surely will.

I left the golf outing to attend Jay and Michelle Moss’ wedding. Once again, God had a plan for a beautiful day,

and coupled that with a beautiful ceremony. It was such an honor to be a part of this for Jay and Michelle, and

our own Faith and Gene put on a wonderful musical performance.

Sunday morning brought the end of a great 6 week Sunday School lesson that Mike Shaw and Mark Winterhoff

taught, called Balanced. Give, Save, Spend (Live off of)….in that order. A great spiritual lesson on Money and

your relationship with God. Thank you to all the participants that shared stories of their life to make this a great

class and to Mike and Mark for your leadership. (Thank you to Carl Langefeld for your class on Romans as well).

We finished up our Sola series during worship service. I was a little unsure how a video sermon series would

work, but received so much out of the series. Thank you to our worship leaders and staff for a well-planned se-

ries.

We finished Sunday evening with our Life Group meeting at church. Our group is forming into a great friendship

among our members. We are able to think, laugh, and cry….and we did all of those Sunday evening. Our sup-

port for one another as we go through life raising our children is a blessing. Thank you to our Life Group lead-

ers that continue to support this wonderful ministry.

Now, I began with speaking on procrastination, and all the good that came of this writing by waiting. I would be

remiss if I wasn’t honest and look at an area we have procrastinated and address it here as well. We as a Leader-

ship have procrastinated this year on finding help that we need with regards to property management. We have

wonderful caretakers of the outside physical grounds, but have let the building maintenance fall directly on Deb

Hayward’s role. The time and effort that has been put forth by Deb is astounding, all the while keeping her

“regular job”. If you have been procrastinating on finding a spot at FoL for your time, talent, and efforts, please

prayerfully consider helping with facilitating our property upkeep. Reach out to me if you feel you can help and

we can discuss!

Blessings to you all,

Michael Bell, BoSL Chair

Dear Fountain of Life Family,

During the Town Hall meeting held on September 10th, we discussed the various options available to Fountain

of Life in terms of filling our pastoral vacancy. Over the last few weeks, the Leadership Team has had the op-

portunity to learn more about these options and discuss them. We feel that the Intentional Interim Pastor pro-

cess is the best fit for FOL. We think that this process will allow us to spend some time as a congregation en-

suring that healing has occurred, examining what we are looking for in our next pastor, and how we can suc-

cessfully prepare for the next pastor to have a long and fulfilling tenure at Fountain of Life. We are planning to

have a congregational meeting in the upcoming weeks where the LCMS Southeastern District will share the de-

tails about the Intentional Interim Process and answer any questions that may arise. In the meantime, please

visit http://www.interimministrylcms.org/ to learn more about the process. The LCMS Southeastern District

will provide us with a list of pastors that are available, and our congregation will vote to extend a call to an In-

tentional Interim Pastor (calls typically range from 12-18 months). We will communicate a date for this infor-

mational meeting as soon as we confirm with the district.

Blessings,

Mark Winterhoff, Head Elder

Adult Classes Martin Luther: The Idea that Changed the World

November 5 & 12

Come see the movie, Martin Luther—The Idea That Changed the World!

Fountain of Life has purchased the movie that documents how the Reformation

happened 500 years ago. How did it impact the Church, how did it inspire the

establishment of the Lutheran Church, and how did it change many things about

life, culture and communication? The radical events, compelling personalities, and

exciting drama of the Reformation are brought to life in this full-length documen-

tary. It features thrilling reenactments of the sixteenth-century events with com-

mentary from leading church-history experts, including the President of the Lu-

theran Church-Missouri Synod. Due to its roughly 2 hour length, the movie will

be shown in two parts on successive Sundays during the education hour.

Ascension: The King Takes His Throne

Ray Vander Laan Video

November 19

It was customary in the Roman world to consider the emperor a divine being.

New emperors would claim this status because they believed that when the previ-

ous ruler died, he would ascend to heaven to be seated among the gods, making

his successor “the son of a god” back on earth. What would happen when these

ascension stories clash with the story of Jesus, who was crucified, resurrected,

and then ascended to heaven Himself, to be seated at the right hand of God? Ex-

plore the empty tombs at Khirbet Midras and climb the Mount of Olives with the

disciples as you discover what it meant for Jesus to rise from the dead and ascend

to heaven.

The tradition of the Fountain of Life Angel Tree began many years ago! It is through the grace of

God and the congregation’s generous giving that we are able give literally hundreds to gifts to

those in our community.

How do we pick who to help?

Most of the families that become our angels are families that local school counselors have

picked as the need-iest. We currently take 3 families, of any size, from each of 6 different schools.

Some of our Angels are members of our church. Some of our Angels are families of our commu-

nity that are sponsored by church members. Each person under the age of 18 is allowed 3 gifts

– 2 things they need and 1 that they want. Angels over the age of 18 are given one gift card.

How can you help? First of all please cover the Angel Tree in prayer. It is through God’s grace that we have always

met the needs of those represented on the tree.

I will need people to help shop this year. Please contact me if you can help!

Three additional ways that you can help:

1. Pick one or more Angels from the tree (available November 19). IMPORTANT: Each Angel has

a code on it. Sign out the Angel in the Angel Tree book. Please put your name and phone num-

ber or email. This helps me track missing Angels. Shop for your Angel and then return it back to

FOL by Sunday, December 10. If your gift is a gift card, there is a box at the Information Center or

you may drop it off in the Church office.

2. Donate money for the Angel Tree – you can put cash or

a check in the offering plate for the Angel tree. Please put

it in an envelope or write ANGEL TREE in the memo line

a check. By donating through the church your donation is

tax deductible. I will then take the donated money and

shop for Angels left on the tree. You may also donate

online!

3. Don’t Want to Shop? You can pick an Angel, give money

and leave the shopping (and wrapping) to volunteers!

Can we give gently used items?

Yes for some items – Bikes, Game systems, Electronic

games, Infant items, For other items please contact me

and we can discuss it.

What is ?

A place for people in their 20s and 30s to get connected to Jesus through:

LifeGroup: Our LifeGroup is hosted by Matt and Carissa Gorris, and we meet about once a month at

rotating locations of our members. We typically meet on Fridays at 7pm. We are a NO HOMEWORK

group, so even if you missed a meeting you can always show up to the next one. We do not usually provide

childcare for this LifeGroup, but are working to communicate our dates far enough in advance to allow

parents to set up childcare.

Fellowship: Social events are held about once a month.

Service: We serve the Lord together both on and off campus. Sometimes we partner with other

ministries of FOL. We have service events 3-4 times a year.

Friends are always welcome. We welcome singles, married couples, and families. We do our best to provide

events for people in their twenties and thirties in any season of life!

We have some events coming up this fall, so mark your calendars and plan to attend:

Stay connected by joining our Facebook group for more detailed info about our events and for updates!

Life Groups The Protestant Reformation: It’s Still All About Jesus

Five hundred years ago Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the church door proclaiming the Good News

of the Holy Bible that salvation is gained through Jesus Christ alone and NOT by works. As we celebrate

the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, we can’t help but be grateful to Luther and others that dared to

insist that the Bible be translated into the language of the common people.

Today we are fortunate to have the Bible to read, study, and learn on our own, and to find God’s will for

each of us. We no longer have to go into hiding to discuss salvation through faith. Small life groups of Je-

sus-followers from our church meet together regularly to connect and grow closer to our Lord. We

study Jesus and His teachings, how they apply to our lives in the twenty-first century, and we support each

other as we endeavor to take up our cross daily.

Salvation has always been about the free gift that Jesus’ sacrifice made available to us. Life groups are the

way we support Jesus-followers at Fountain of Life Lutheran Church in learning specific ways to love God

and love our neighbors as ourselves. It is through this demonstration of love that we honor God.

Don’t miss out on this crucial connection to believers at Fountain of Life. Jesus is present as we gather to-

gether in our groups. It is still all about Jesus, about his sacrifice, and about being connected to other disci-

ples of Christ. For more information about joining a life group, contact Pat Shaw or Larry Scott.

Families with Children Middle & High School

Dear FOL Families with children,

God is our creator, and He has a special plan for all of

us! He has given us families, food, homes, and clothing,

and has blessed each of us with unique gifts and talents.

In November, we give thanks to God for all of these

things and we celebrate our blessings on Thanksgiving.

Our Children's Sunday School lessons this month address

how we can give thanks and praise for these gifts all year

long, and we'll explore the meaning behind Thanksgiving.

We'll learn how to be thankful for obstacles in our lives,

and how we can see these as an opportunity for God to

do amazing things. We'll also be playing games, making

crafts, and having some fun with Turkey Tales. We hope

that you can join us on Sunday mornings at 9:50 a.m. for

Sunday School, and hope you know how thankful we are

for YOU!

will read and discuss "The Broken Road" by Richard Paul Evans

Overview: Chicago celebrity, Charles James can’t shake the nightmare that wakes him each night. He sees

himself walking down a long, broken highway the sides of which are lit in flames. Where is he going? Why is

he walking? What is the wailing he hears around him? By day, he wonders why he’s so haunted and unhappy

when he has all he ever wanted-fame, fans and fortune and the lavish lifestyle it affords him.

Then a twist of fate changes everything. Charles is granted something very remarkable: a second chance. The

question is: What will he do with it?

Visitation

Thanksgiving is almost upon us. According to studies, Thanksgiving Holiday is the most

travelled day of the year. Folks visiting both near and far from home. Visiting, that is what folks

are doing and giving thanks with their families/friends for their many blessings.

Visits from your Visitation Ministry team are available for YOU. It does not need to be a

holiday for me to come and visit . You don’t need to be sick or in the hospital to receive a

visit from me, (although I do those visits as well). On my visits, we pray together over any

concerns/issues you request discuss any questions you may have about your spiritual needs

and if you would like, I provide communion. What is spoken about during our time together

is confidential as well, between God, you and me.

What do you give God thanks for this Holiday ? I give thanks for the life God has given me,

for my family, my FOL Family, friends, good health, and the Ministry he has led me to, which is

to come and visit YOU. Please contact me when you need or would like a visit. I DO look

forward to visiting YOU!

Describe your childhood: school, play, sports,

church

Attended school and was active in the First Christian

Church youth movement in Harrison, Arkansas.

Brownies and Girl Scouts was the after school activity.

Once I gained confidence, I thrived on being the top Girl

Scout cookie seller. (We sold cookies door to door way

back in those days) :) My GS troop raised enough funds

from the cookie sales to take two 27 day trips to

Colorado, New Mexico, Texas and Arizona during the

summers of 1968 &1969. My Dad’s career moved the

family to Virginia the second half of my senior year in

high school. I graduated from Radford College (now

Radford University) with a Speech Communications

degree.

How did you decide on a profession?

Women were just becoming involved in national media.

I thought I wanted to work in TV. TV markets are in

larger cities. I had not considered the impact of being a

single female in a larger city. The summer of my senior

year prior to my internship with WDBJ-TV, my seasonal

retail job with Roses Discount was not available. My

mom had uncovered a reporter position with the local

newspaper, The Gazette. I got the position, was given a

3 month leave of absence to complete my degree. The

rest is history.

Tell us about your family and how you met

Brady.

Galax, Virginia was a small town that offered unique

business opportunities. While working for Carnation

Milk Company, my dad opened a Donut Shoppe next

door to a grocery store. During the school year, it

provided really-early morning employment to my two

brothers. During the summer of 1975, I worked the

shop during the day. Brady and I met when he stopped

to purchase donuts one morning.

What are your prayers for Fountain of Life

Lutheran Church?

That God will bless our efforts and grant us a plentiful

harvest of souls. That he will Increase our trust in his

word; keeping our faith strong, and that we will look to

him for guidance and strength.

Where do you want to retire?

Kernersville. Brady and I like the safety and size of a

smaller community. We believe we will be able to

enjoy the mountains, beaches and weekend trips to

larger cities.

What would the congregation be surprised to

learn about you?

I have three brothers. However, anytime my Dad

wants to talk sports, he calls me to get my opinion.

Elder Spotlight Terry Mink

Terry is our last Elder highlighted

Thanks Terry for sharing with us.

Service Opportunities

“If everyone gave and served and prayed exactly like you,

would the church be healthy and empowered? Or would

it be weak and listless?” - Francis Chan

In 2017: Try serving on one or more service teams!

but we are always looking for more help!
