Te Punga Karere o Tukua o Punga Tikipunga Panui – 9 SEPTEMBER 2016 OPERATION BUSHCRAFT On 25 July, our Services Academy deployed on Operation Bushcraft. This is our annual 4 day camp where we learn Tramping, Camping and how to survive in the NZ Bush. This year we chose to join the Central Region camp in Santoft Forest, Whanganui. We spent the first night at the Marae in Waiouru being hosted by Ngati Tumatauenga (NZ Army) where they told us the history of their Whare Nui and how it was “carried on the back” of its soldiers to its current place. We realise what a privilege it was for us to stay the night there. The next morning, we carried on our journey south and met up with the staff from the Defence Force. The first day we setup our base camp and settled in. For the following 3 days we tramped and tramped and tramped some more, all taking turns at navigating. The weather was kind and even though it rained now and then we were able to cope with the conditions. We learned so many skills in such a short time such as emergency procedures, improvised shelters, hygiene and collecting water. We Year 9 Ski and Snowboard trip departed with ten Year 9 students. We left at 12.15pm on Thursday, to avoid the worst of the traffic in Auckland, picking up Peter Reinsfield on our way and arrived at the accommodation in National Park at 8.30 pm. After supper and a talk, we settled into the 2 dorms for the night. We had an early start on Friday, as we saw dawn rise over Mt Ngauruhoe. A hearty breakfast was shared, then we headed up the mountain with 4 of the 10 preferring to try snowboarding. It was busy in Happy Valley, and everybody persevered at their chosen code, with everyone having a great day. Saturday was forecast to be a pretty yucky day, and students were keen to get an early start. It turned out to be windy with limited visibility, with fresh, dry snow falling in Happy Valley. OPERATION BUSHCRAFTOn 25 July, our Services Academy deployed on Operation Bushcraft. For the following 3 days we tramped and tramped and tramped some more, all taking turns at navigating. The weather was kind and even though it rained now and then we were able to cope with the conditions. We learned so many skills in such a short time such as emergency procedures, improvised shelters, hygiene and collecting water. We enjoyed it so much that it seemed it was over in a flash. A big shout out goes to Flaxmere College who worked with us over the week and stayed with us on the last night to face the forecasted storm.

Most of all though, a big nga mihi to all our Services students. We live up to our whakatauki……

Year 9 Ski and Snowboard trip departed with ten Year 9 students.

With their confidence up, and their gear sorted from the day before, students ripped straight into their runs.

Students were keen and positive at all times had great attitude and resilience, helping with chores as required representing our kura well. Many thanks to the BOT for the student time released, and Clint for sorting the snow chains. A special thanks to Peter for giving up his time, and relinquishing his season ticket to a Warriors home game, as well as lost earnings. His energy, experience and support for the students was invaluable.

RSIS Second CycleCongratulations to our second cycle of Red Shirts in Schools who graduated today with a shared morning tea down at the Warehouse.  RSIS is a Gateway programme designed around customer service, communication and retail skills.  The students who complete will gain 28 credits at level 2 and a great boost to their confidence as well as job prospects with the company. Well done Bayley, Nicole, Jahneiya, Shania & Tumai (absent).

Principal’s KōreroKia ora koutou. It has been a very busy term.  You can see from this panui the range of activities and opportunities available to our tamariki.  Our winter sports teams have been very active. Several parents who have been onsite recently may have commented how good the school is looking at the moment.   Obviously we are delighted with that feedback.  We will continue to work very hard to provide a beautiful learning environment for our students. There are significant building improvements planned over the next 12 months. We are delighted with the proposed improvements to our kura.  An example of this is the student’s toilets in B Block. Early next year these will be completely refurbished.  This is long overdue and we are excited to be able improve these facilities for our students. As always we value the partnership we have with whanau and actively invite your feedback. In this spirit, on Thursday,15th September we will be

hosting a hui in our library to discuss the proposed building of a Whare Wananga here at Tikipunga High School at 6.00pm.  All are welcome.

9KIWI PLANTING CHAMPIONSAs part of our Social Studies Sustainability study, Mrs Lomax and I with selected students from Year 9Kiwi went to Pehiaweri Marae, to complete the second year of our wetland planting programme. We were joined by eight year 2 students from Kamo Primary, and their helpers, as well as Ben Edgar, from Blue Nikau Nurseries.

We liaised with Joby, and had been granted $1800 by NRC for plants, then coordinated appropriate species with Ben from Blue Nikau Nurseries. Blessed with a break in the weather, our students jumped into the task, each with a mini-me attached at their side, planting all the available trees, predominantly manuka and cabbage trees.

Our students were awesome with the little ones. We built on this experience in week 4 by planting on Urupukapuka Island with Project Island Birdsong. Many thanks for all your help in making this wonderful experience happen for our students.

7 Tui had a science based research project which involved learning about animals (New Zealand and Global)We learned about the native birds and how some of them came to live in New Zealand a long time ago.On completion of their research the students were rewarded with a trip to the Auckland Zoo, where they came face to face with their researched animals. An amazing day enjoyed by all. Huge thanks to our teachers…you rock!!

URUPUKAPUKA TRIPMr Mills, Mr Easterbrook and 11 students headed up to the Bay of Islands to help Project Island Birdsong. This group aims to restore some of the islands in the Bay to its natural habitat, and attract birds back to the area.

This means getting rid of all pests and maintaining and replanting the islands. We went out to Urupukapuka Island in 2 boats, being delayed by a visit from dolphins off the beach. We met a volunteer Theresa from the project, who showed us how to stake up the plants that were wind damaged. She outlined the work they had done up till now and the plans for the future. We had a great day up there, and at the end, some of us fell off the end of the wharf!

An awesome sports term so far with our school engaging in a variety of events and also participating in the Winter Tournament Week for UNISS & AIMS. Thank you to all students who trained, participated and gave 110%. A big THANKYOU to all the coaches, staff and supporters.
