Friday 31st August 2018 Term 3 Issue 13
ROTARY DINNER
On Monday night the Canobolas STEM centre was transformed into a restaurant and played host
to 43 members of the Orange Rotary Club. Our Year 11 and 12 Hospitality students, together will
some enthusiastic Year 9 Food Technology students, prepared, cooked and served a 2-course
meal for our guests. On arrival, guests were presented with an array of mocktails, prepared and
served by our Year 12 Food and Beverage students. They were then treated to a chicken or beef
roast and for dessert guests were served Sticky Date Pudding and Deconstructed Lemon
Meringue Pies. All students involved in this event showed great skills and incredible work ethic.
The Rotarians in attendance were suitably impressed, stating it was ‘the best meal that they had
at a meeting in a long time!’. Not only is this an experience enjoyable for our guests, it provides
our students with the opportunity to put skills learnt in class into practice in a simulated restaurant
environment. This is especially important for our hospitality students who must demonstrate their
skills and provide photographic evidence in order to be deemed competent in a number of units
in their courses.
I would like to thank the Rotary Club of Orange for their continued support of our school. On the
night they donated a DVD on the Kokoda Trail to our school’s resource library and they also
donated a book on our behalf to Glenroi Heights Public School library. This has been an annual
event for our Hospitality Team over the past 4-5 years and I am sure we will be able to continue
this fantastic partnership well into the future.
A huge thank you must also go to Mrs
Jennifer Shepherd and Mrs Marion Rouse,
who worked incredibly hard throughout
the evening to ensure the smooth running
of this event.
I am incredibly proud of all students
involved in this event. It is so rewarding to
see skills, knowledge and confidence in
our students build throughout the year.
Congratulations to our amazing Hospitality
Team!

ROTARY DINNER
2018
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK Dear Parents and Members of the School Community
We are now more than half way through the term, and nothing appears to be slowing down.
The students and staff are working as hard as ever, involving themselves in a huge number of
events across the school and the community.
Canteen Manager
It is with regret that I announce that our Canteen Manager Andrew Farley is moving on at the
end of this week. Andrew has made a huge difference to our school in the three years that he
has been with us, transforming the Canteen to a place that students and staff alike enjoy being.
The quality of the food and drinks that are on offer match the best cafes in town, and he will be
sorely missed. We wish him well in his new endeavours and I will hopefully be able to announce
our new Canteen Manager in my next newsletter.
Signing students out in class time
When a parent or carer wishes to withdraw students out of class to take them for appointments
etc. in school hours, it would be appreciated if the following procedures were observed:
Send a note with your child indicating the appointment reason and time, which is to be
presented to the administration staff before school starts so they prepare an Early Leaver
Pass. This pass is shown to the teacher at the beginning of their lesson so they are aware of
the time the student needs to leave class.
Leave a message with administration staff earlier in the day prior to the appointment so the
student can given a pass and can be ready at the appropriate time to be signed out.
Five minutes notice by parents and carers is not enough time to have students at the office ready
for collection, and can be disruptive to teachers and their classes.
Thank you for your support and consideration.
Rotary Dinner
The Hospitality team, ably led by Ms Lynch, Ms Shepherd and Mrs Rouse, hosted another Rotary
dinner at the school during the week. The students worked incredibly hard to produce a two
course meal for members of the Orange Rotary Club, and by all reports it was the best meal they
have had at our school. This is a credit to our Hospitality team, and the students from Years 10-12
who were involved. Well done.
CKC Cup
Our annual interschool sporting competition with Cowra High School and Kelso High School will
once again be held, with both days of competition being in Week 8. This is always a great event,
with Cowra travelling to us this year, and then we will compete against Kelso in Bathurst. Students
have been reminded that they need to ensure that they are behaving appropriately in the lead
up to this event to be eligible to represent the school. Three negative entries will put them at risk
of not being able to participate.
I hope you have a great fortnight and I look forward to speaking with again in Week 6.
With my warmest regards
Kate Wootten

AROUND THE GROUNDS
A big thank you to Bunnings Orange for continuing to support the beautification of our
school grounds. They kindly donated some plants for two gardens at the front of the school.
The pretty star flower
blooms herald the
coming of spring.
On the 28th of July four Canobolas students, alongside ten Orange High School students and
four Coleambally Central School students travelled down to Melbourne for the Swinburne
University Open Day on the 29th of July. After they arrived at the campus, the students first met
Ruby, a student who attends Swinburne and received scholarships from the Country Education
Foundation, who also sponsored the trip for our students. Ruby told them her story of how she
went from high school to Swinburne and how the Country Education Foundation supported
her. The students then went and explored the University. It had everything from a flight simulator
to trade courses and lots of booths for students (and teachers) to browse. They were able to
go and explore what the university had to offer such as Law, where some students witnessed
what is called a ‘moot’, wherein two law students at Swinburne would argue whether a person
should be prosecuted or not depending on their crime. They had many opportunities to talk to
lecturers and students at Swinburne about the different opportunities available at the
University. Students were then taken on a residential tour by an R.A. at the University and
shown the different accommodation available at the University from a shared apartment to
single rooms.
After the open day students were then taken on a tour of the Melbourne Cricket Ground
(MCG). They were shown around the grounds and told many fascinating facts and an
enormous amount of information regarding the history of the MCG. They were shown areas
such as the media room where journalists cover the AFL games, the room where coaches are
interviewed after games, the indoor cricket nets, and a picture of Sir Donald Bradman with
Sachin Tendulkar, who is regarded as one of the world’s best batsman. They were also shown
the spectacular view of Melbourne from one of the terraces at the MCG which didn’t fail to
wow the students. Sadly, the trip came to an end with students leaving early Monday morning
and traveling back home, albeit quietly after an action packed trip.

Botanic Gardens Run and BBQ
On Friday the 17th of August, we had 12 boys enjoy an early morning run/walk to kick start their
day at the beautiful surrounds of Orange Botanic Gardens. A frosty morning made for
picturesque views as they ran the circuit twice with local partners. Orange MP Phil Donato
dropped in, Katrina Lang from the Orange Police and Michael Newman from Orange TAFE and
his daughter Marley were also there to take part and mingle with the boys over breakfast and
discuss possible career paths.
With Matty on the BBQ the crew treated themselves to a well earned bacon and egg roll. What
a great way to start a Friday!!
Thanks to the staff who contacted us regarding this event. Hope a few more can get along next
time , it was a great morning with boys.

Year 7/8 Rugby League
On Friday 17th August our school hosted a game of rugby league against Dubbo South
Campus. Our boys were so pumped to represent their school colours in front of such a big
cheering and supportive crowd. All this support spurred the Year 7/8 Clontarf boys to come
away with a win.
The boys were filled with excitement after the game which was very pleasing to see. We
hope to have more sporting games held in front of the school in the future.
I believe its a very special honour for our kids to play in front of their school as not many of
them get to play weekend sport. It was a great atmosphere which brought a lot of energy to
the game.

YEAR 7 IPL EXHIBITIONS
Last Friday, Year 7 had their third exhibition for the projects Test of Time and Beating the Odds.
In Test of Time, students learned about either Ancient Egypt, India, China, Greece or Rome. They
created a number of artefacts from the time period and worked in small groups to produce a
green screen film about each of their civilisations. The students presented their films to their peers
and reflected on their work in the project in front of parents and community members.
In Beating the Odds, the students explored different habitats and the animals that have
adapted to survive in them. They recreated a diorama of different habitats and then designed
and produced their own creature that could exist in that environment using adaptations of
existing animals.
Congratulations on the wonderful job you all did Year 7! We are looking forward to seeing what
you produce in your next two projects: Mawambul and Feelin' Good.

Write a Book in a Day Competition
Congratulations to the Wordsmith’s Writers Group who participated in the Write a Book in a Day
competition. The students were hard at work from 7.30am in the morning for 10 hours with their
mentor, Miss Duncan, writing and collaborating a 5000 word story that will be published and
donated to children’s hospitals across Australia.
Poetry Boot Camp
Students participated in a Poetry Boot Camp with Australian
Poetry Slam champion, Zohab Zee Khan. Students wrote and
read their own poems with Zohab’s guidance. He explained
that everyone is a poet, and students surprised themselves by
uncovering some hidden talents.

SCIENCE FACULTY NEWS
Year 9 are currently working through the Earth and Space unit. This area of learning focuses on
Plate Tectonics and their relationship with earthquakes and volcanoes.
In the process of learning about the scales in which earthquakes are measured, 9 Science 1
competed against each other in an engineering build contest. Students had a design brief and
materials budget, and had to create a structure that would withstand an earthquake simulation
for 10 seconds.
Allisha Miller, Caitlyn Jones, Teagan Masila, and Briana Priest won the day with their structure
easily withstanding the some vigorous table shaking.

Canobolas competed in the Netball NSW Western Region Netball Gala Day on the 16
August.
The team played six games on the day, winning against Forbes High, Anson Street SSP 1
and 2, Wellington High and Cowra High 1 and 2, to go through the day undefeated and
take the title.
Many of the students had never played before but they all improved as the day went
on, and displayed excellent sportsmanship when it was apparent they were too strong
for the opposition.
Alex Walker, Nick Clark and Kenya Lacey were formidable in defence, keeping most
teams scoreless. Tiger Wallace, Erica Borys and Mitch Basford were excellent in the
centre court, linking the great work of the defenders with the shooting circle. Natalie
Corby and Patrick McGinley were guns in the attacking end, playing an excellent
passing game, and shooting accurately.
Congratulations!

This year 27 students attended the annual Goodooga Reward Excursion. Students were selected
on their attendance, positive behaviour and school uniform throughout Term 2. This year the
excursion was extended and we left a day earlier to include some additional experiences for
students at Bourke and Brewarrina. On Tuesday the 7th of August staff and students travelled to
Bourke to participate in sporting games with Bourke High School, students were also treated to
an outback show. The next day we trekked to Brewarrina to visit the Central School and have
lunch at the fish traps and started the journey to Goodooga through Walgett. Once we arrived in
Goodooga, students set up camp and attended the disco at the Goodooga Central School
which was run by Walgett PCYC DJs.
On Thursday, students participated in the Indigenous games, Joe Lucas was awarded best and
Fairest and the Frogs won the overall point score award. We then enjoyed a delicious bush
tucker lunch that was provided by Mindy Gibbs and the Goodooga Community members.
Students and staff relaxed for the remainder of the day and visited some sacred cultural sites in
the town and enjoyed a dip under the standpipe before our long trek home.
A big thankyou to Daisy Morrissey, Nikita Mason, Kayla Simmonds and Hayden Gibbs for assisting
with the excursion, it would not have been as successful without you.
On Tuesday 28th August, Year 12 PDH and SLR classes took some time out
to engage with some mindfulness and relaxation in a YOGA session run by
Miss Cassie Laughton. Students participated in the session to help them
reflect on their examinations and have a ‘brain break’ before
endeavouring on their final weeks at school and in the lead up to their HSC
examinations. This was very well needed after their HSC trial exams that
took place over the last few weeks.
Thank you Year 12 for having a go and for Mrs Bunworth for organising the
session for us.
In Week 4, 14 lucky Canobolas students ventured down to Perisher Valley for the annual PDHPE
Faculty ski trip. This year we again combined our ski trip with our snow-loving CKC Cup peers at
Cowra High School and invited Canowindra High School to travel with us to reduce our costs.
On Wednesday 15th August we departed Canobolas High School and travelled via coach to
Jindabyne to our accommodation at the “Snowy Valley Resort” which overlooks Lake
Jindabyne. That evening we were fitted with ski gear, clothes and received the important
information required about our snow experience. Early Thursday morning we travelled via
coach to Perisher Valley Terminal and caught the Ski Tube under the mountain to Blue Cow for
a full day of lessons run by qualified ski instructors. After a big Day 1 on the slopes, we returned
to Jindabyne that evening for dinner and night time activities. On Friday we travelled back to
Perisher for another day of skiing to refine our newly learnt skills in our morning lessons and
continued into the afternoon. We left the slopes Friday afternoon and started the big journey
home, arriving at the Orange railway station after midnight. Despite a bit of windy conditions,
we were again treated with great weather and the snow coverage was outstanding! A big
thank you must go to all the students who embraced a wonderful opportunity that we offer
here at Canobolas, and for bringing a positive attitude, perseverance and determination,
learning a new skill and making the trip very enjoyable for Mr Skein and Miss Morrissey! Hope to
see you all again next year!
Girls Business
On Monday the 27th of August, Girls Academy welcomed Jean from Family Planning Dubbo,
who came and spent periods 3 and 4 with our Year 7 and 8 Academy students.
Jean began the lesson with ‘Healthy and unhealthy relationships’ she asked the students to
give their personal opinions on these topics and what they looked like. She then played a
cartoon video of a young girl being in a relationship and dealing with emotional abuse,
jealousy, and isolation that the unhealthy relationships can cause.
Jean then spoke to them in regards to this ensuring that they understood clearly what is
positive and negative in a relationship. This was really useful as some of the students didn’t
realise what some of the negatives were. With this the students were spoken to about consent
as to when and how they are to use it and ages that it is to be used. Jean ensured that there
are always people there to help.
The second half of the lesson was talking about women’s business. Jean involved the students
in this by handing out cue cards with different parts of the body and their function, the students
were then asked if they had a body part or function and to match them together.
The kids enjoyed this and had a laugh.
To end the lesson Jean handed out some blank pieces of paper and asked the students to
write down any questions that they had, this was a way for them to ask questions that they
might have been too shy to ask in person. Once they had written their questions they were put
into a jar and Jean read them out and answered them one by one. This worked really well and
answered some really good questions for the students. We would like to give Jean a big thank
you for coming to our academy and speaking with the students.

MATHS FACULTY NEWS
Who says Maths doesn’t apply to the real world! What is more real than food!
Year 11 have been looking at Probability
and were comparing the colours inside
their packet of M&Ms with the Mars
website data. They were surprised to find
out that even though more blue M&Ms are
made in the factory that some bags had
none!
Year 11 were struggling with
finding the perimeter of parts of
a circle so Mrs Arman went out
and bought some pizza for
them to work with! We found
out that even though you may
get 2 pieces from the same
pizza, they have very different
measurements to each other!
We also found out that Year 11
love pizza and working with
food is very motivating!
Special mentions to Year 9 girls Courtney Harcombe,
Mackenzie Harcombe, Maddison Everingham and Jade
Colwell on achieving 99% on their Financial Mathematics
