PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

RELATIONSHIPS WITH OUR CHILDREN

Quite often discussions I have with parents end up focusing on the

importance of their relationship with their son / daughter. It is crucial to

establish and maintain positive relationships with our children. An open

and honest relationship is of great benefit, particularly in the more

challenging times which we may have with our children.

Last weekend I was looking back through some information in relation

to drugs and alcohol and found some points worth remembering.

„There is no way to guarantee that your children will never experiment with drugs. But having a good

relationship and talking openly with your child about drugs may reduce the chances of them getting into

trouble.‟

Be part of their lives Be involved in your children‟s lives. Spend time with them, take an interest in their interests, eat a meal

together every day and do other things together often. Get to know your child‟s friends and their parents.

Be honest Learn the facts about alcohol and other drugs, but don‟t pretend to know everything. Be prepared

to say „I don‟t know, but I will try to find out‟. If you are honest with your children it will be

easier for them to be honest with you.

Listen to your children Talk – and listen – to your children. Ask their opinion about things and ask for their input

in family decisions. Listen to them, and they are more likely to listen to you.

Be calm It is important to be calm and rational when you talk about difficult things. Getting angry will make it more

difficult to talk about sensitive topics in the future.

Keep on talking Once you‟ve talked about drugs or other difficult issues, it is important to talk about them again later. This

makes it easier for your child to come to you if they have a problem.

Be a role model Set a good example with your own drug use. Young people can get their opinions about

drug use from you. If you drink alcohol, smoke or take medicines, do so within safe and

sensible limits. Be prepared to discuss this honestly with your children.

Set clear boundaries Talk with your children to set rules about what sort of behaviour is okay, and what is not. Be consistent

and make sure your child knows what will happen if they break the rules.

Focus on the positive Reward your child‟s good behaviour and emphasize the things they do well. Make sure

your son or daughter knows you love them and will always try to be on their side, even if

you don‟t always agree with their behaviour.

ALCOHOL AND YOUNG PEOPLE

As the year progresses you may be considering allowing your child to attend a party

or even hosting one at your own home. We should always know where our children

are and whose house they are going to. This simply means phone calls to all parents

involved. Parents need to make a habit of this. It helps build relationships with your

child’s friends and their parents too.

Page 3: Friday, 6 November, 2015 · Friday, 6th November, 2015 nd th Sunday, 15 Tuesday, 17 Wednesday, 18 Thursday, 19 Friday, 20-Saturday, 21 WHAT’S ON IN WEEK 6 TERM 4 Sunday, 8th November

Following is another small segment from an article put out by the government which you may find helpful as well.

Underage drinking and alcohol misuse by young people are important community issues. So it is essential

that young people, parents and the broader community are aware of the laws relating to young people and

alcohol.

Some people may not be aware that it is unlawful to supply alcohol to under 18‟s.Regardless of where the

function is held, in most cases, it is against the law to supply alcohol to anyone who is under 18 – even at

private parties. This is often called second party supply – an offence that carries a maximum penalty of

$5,500, or $11,000 and /or 12 months prison (in serious cases).

HSC EXAMS CONCLUDE Sincere congratulations to all Year 12 students on their co-operation and professional approach to their HSC

exams.

They are over now and I wish all students a safe time as they celebrate this milestone.

I would like to sincerely thank Mr Phil Lloyd and Mr Chris McQueen who closely followed students during the

exam period.

Subject teachers led a prayer prior to each exam ensuring students were very well supported at this most stressful

time.

ARTEXPRESS 2016 Congratulations to Seamus Dempsey and Riley Holland on their nomination to ArtExpress.

This is an outstanding achievement. I watched their works progress this year and noted their dedication. Their

teacher Ms Loretta Hack is extremely proud as too are the staff at MacKillop College. Well done!

EXTENDED STUDENT LEAVE

From the beginning of 2015, family holidays and travel were no longer considered

under the Exemption from School-Procedures. Travel outside of school holiday

periods is now counted as an absence for statistical purposes.

From time to time parents/guardians may approach the school seeking permission

for their child to travel during the school term for extended periods of time. Travel

is considered to be domestic or international travel for the purpose of a family

holiday, family business, bereavement or other reasons.

When travel during the school term exceeds 10 consecutive school days parents/guardians are required to complete

an Application for Extended Leave – Travel (Form A.1) prior to their travel and return to myself as soon as

possible. This form is attached to the newsletter and can also be found on our website at

http://pmaclism.catholic.edu.au/about-us/policies-0

Once this application is received, and upon the Principal’s approval, a Certificate of Extended Leave – Travel is

issued.

If you have any queries regarding this process please do not hesitate to contact me.

YEAR 12 NEWS

END OF HSC EXAMS The final HSC exams wrapped up this week with Extension History on Monday, Geography

(morning) and Drama (afternoon) on Tuesday and Visual Arts Wednesday afternoon. It is

important that all textbooks are returned, outstanding accounts finalised, laptops reimaged and

student leaving forms finalised.

GRADUATION DINNER SATURDAY, 14TH

NOVEMBER

Students will need to arrive at Panthers by no later than 5.40p.m. They then need to move upstairs to the Rushcutter

room (not an easy feat in high heels, so please be careful). Here students will check in and be placed in the correct

alphabetical order with House Captains, SRC & Captains at the end. Students older than 18 and with ID can get a

wristband from Panthers staff allowing the consumption of alcohol. Students and other guests who are 18 can also

get a wristband later on in the foyer. At around 6.10/15p.m. they will have to go back downstairs and line up down

the centre of the club. MacKillop staff will be present to give instructions and will have seating plans so students

will have an idea where they need to sit after being introduced.

Parents are also advised to be in the Auditorium from about 5.30p.m. – some entertainment from the MacKillop

Bands will be provided. All parents and guests, unless members, will have to sign in – this can take quite a while.

All bar service in the Auditorium will cease when the students are introduced and when important

speeches/presentations take place (estimated cessation 6.20p.m. – 7.30p.m. and 8.30p.m. – 9.30p.m.).

A letter outlining these details and other information was issued to all students after the Studies of Religion exam –

they were asked to take it home to show parents as well.

EXTRA HELPERS FOR SET-UP OF GRADUATION AND PACKING AWAY The Decorating Committee have done a marvellous job planning for

this event and I am confident all students and guests will be

impressed by the transformation to the room. There will be lots to do

on the Saturday morning to have the room ready for Saturday

evening. Some extra assistance from about 8.30/9.00a.m. would be

greatly appreciated. It is hoped that all will be ready/done by

1.30/2.00p.m.

There will almost be as much effort needed to pack away all the

decorations, lights, candles, vases, seat covers etc. Some of this can

occur Saturday night but the majority will need to be done Sunday

morning from about 9.30/10.00a.m.

Page 5: Friday, 6 November, 2015 · Friday, 6th November, 2015 nd th Sunday, 15 Tuesday, 17 Wednesday, 18 Thursday, 19 Friday, 20-Saturday, 21 WHAT’S ON IN WEEK 6 TERM 4 Sunday, 8th November

BBQ BREAKFAST WEDNESDAY, 16TH

DECEMBER This is the day the HSC results are released. This inaugural BBQ is a chance for students to share

their HSC results and possibly receive advice on subsequent options. It will begin around 8.15a.m.

and finish around 9.00a.m. – usual egg & bacon rolls.

ATARS – THURSDAY, 17TH

DECEMBER

The College does not receive student ATARS – we rely on students letting us know how they went. Some of the

highest student ATARS are included in local newspapers and advertisements for the College which is one of the

reasons we request you phone or email this information. We are interested in and wish to celebrate all the hard-

earned ATAR results, not just those at the upper end. Again some advice on future pathways can be discussed as

well.

HSC ACHIEVERS ASSEMBLY EARLY 2016 Just as there was a presentation at the start of this year by last year’s HSC Achievers, something

similar will occur next year from the class of 2015 to inspire those yet to complete their HSC.

Georgia Puriri, James Ting, Lucie Williams and Charles Gaherity attended a two day leadership camp in Coffs

Harbour last week. We are very grateful to them for giving up their time to develop their leadership skills for the

benefit of the College community. The students felt that it was a very valuable experience for them in learning

about themselves and their leadership strengths.

Elevate Your Education was a valuable experience for Year 11. Ryan

presented sessions based on improving their study skills, getting the most

out of their time at school and maximising their HSC results. It was a very

practical seminar with information that all students could apply to their

study organisational skills. I was very impressed with the attention and

engagement of the students.

Reports are going out next week so students need to ensure that they have

settled accounts with the office and returned all Preliminary course

textbooks to the Library in order to receive their Preliminary reports.

YEAR 8 NEWS

Study, study, study! I am hoping parents have seen an increase in their child’s effort in

homework throughout the last week. Exams start next week on Thursday and are

completed on Monday of Week 7. If any student is away the exams are repeated on

Wednesday, 18th through to Friday, 20

th November.

Exams are taking place:

Thursday Week 6, 12th

November.

Friday Week 6, 13th

November.

Monday Week 7, 16th

November.

There is still a chance for students to submit a response to join the CSYMA round class for 2016,

it gives the students the chance to explore their faith commitment plus embrace a number of

community-minded activities throughout the year as representatives of the school.

Have an enjoyable weekend!

YEAR 7 NEWS

Congratulations Mia Dare, Alexander Galea, Zac Lawrence (2), Gemma Mooney, Lachlan

Nottle, Hannah Poppleton, Ethan Swan (3), Lleyton Wall and Lucy Waser who have recently

earned a Pastoral Coordinator’s Award.

Students have received their examination timetables this week and are advised to display this

timetable at home. It is good practice to check the exam timetable in advance and know the

venues for each exam.

For all examinations, students are required to bring their MacKillop College student card and the necessary

equipment to each exam; they may also bring in a water bottle and place their devices under their desk in the

examination room. Strict adherence to examination conditions will be maintained.

Students absent from an examination will be required to complete it in the junior library, on the

same day in Week 7 mirroring the examination timetable.

We wish students clarity of mind and calm during examinations so that individuals may

demonstrate their true current level of learning.

LEADERS RETREAT Last week, four senior students from MacKillop College were lucky enough to attend a Leaders Retreat in Coffs

Harbour. Year 12 student, Georgia Puriri has written about her experience for us.

"Over the two days of the retreat, we reflected on our responsibilities and contribution to the Mackillop College

community. What had the biggest impact on me was when I watched two friends cry - grieving the loss of their friend.

I was reminded of a scripture from Ecclesiastes: To everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under

heaven: a time to be born. a time to die, a time to heal, a time to break down, and a time to build up. A time to weep, a

time to laugh; a time to mourn and a time to dance. (3:1-4). The reflection taught me that the best leadership quality I

can offer my peers is my friendship. As a leader, I will strive to offer a friendly face and someone who will always

listen to your issues and the challenges you face. Thank you for giving me this opportunity - I look forward to all the

good times we'll have together over the next year".

FUTURE PROBLEM SOLVING NATIONAL FINALS IN BRIBANE

On Friday, 16th October, I travelled to Brisbane with Imogen Smyth (Yr 9) and Rachel Goodwin (Yr 9) to the

National Finals of Future Problem Solving. We had all participated in the Scenario Writing Competition, where we

submitted 1500 word short stories solving issues that we projected at least twenty years into the future.

We all placed in the top ten of that competition and were invited to the National Finals. It was a really rewarding

experience as we met and worked with other finalists from around the country. We received our awards on Friday

night, and then on Saturday we had a writing workshop where we wrote more short stories with other competitors,

participated in a survey activity, and listened to a very beneficial 'master class' held by the coordinator of the

scenario writing activity.

Altogether, it was a really enjoyable experience as we developed our writing skills and encountered other people

who have similar interests to us.

Many thanks must go to Annette Holley who chaperoned us on the weekend and drove us to Brisbane, Mr Smith

who coached us throughout the year and Mrs O'Brien who helped make this opportunity possible.

MATHEMATICS NEWS

Over the past five weeks, students in Mr Schumann’s 8M1A Maths class have

participated in the second round of a class Mathematics Problem Solving

competition. The competition involved the students completing a weekly set of

three problems in which marks were awarded based on their level of difficulty. The

class then discussed their solutions and methods. A running tally of marks awarded

was kept.

Congratulations to Flynn Goodman (1st), Jarrod Fehon (2nd) and Nat Francis

(3rd). Amazingly, these three boys were the same placegetters from round 1 but in

a different order! Well done to all students on displaying their exceptional

problem-solving skills.

ENGLISH NEWS

On Monday, 19th October, 15 Year 8 students from MacKillop College were lucky to attend a two day creative

writing camp at the Yarrahapinni Adventist Youth Centre in Grassy Head. We all loved the facilities and most of

our free time was spent playing basketball on their outdoor court. We couldn't have asked for a better place to write

and all of our work was done outside. Our activities included a bush walk taking in some stunning scenery where

we worked on describing setting, a walk to the beach to write poems, and lots of fun group activities like one-act

plays. It was also great to meet like-minded students from St Joseph's Regional and from St Paul's Kempsey and we

all left having made lots of new friends.

Special thanks must be given to Ms Gray and Mr Smith for

organising this trip and I'd like to extend that thanks to all

the other teachers from Regional and St Paul's Kempsey for

running the activities and keeping us engaged throughout

the two days. It was a great experience and I'd recommend it

to anyone.

Tennis Team 2015

After weeks of trials and training at lunchtime and after school the MacKillop Tennis team was ready to go. The

the team was keen to get there on Tuesday, 3rd

they lost, displaying excellent behaviour and manners on and off the court.

The Open Girls’ team played extremely well and came away Diocesan Open Girls’ Runner Up team.

LITURGICAL MUSIC WORKSHOP

The MacKillop College Praise Band have been invited to participate in a liturgical music workshop presented by

Father Rob Galea on Monday, 16th

November. Father Rob Galea is an ordained Catholic Priest and is currently

serving in Sandhurst Diocese, Victoria after moving to Australia from Malta, his home country. He is a singer and

songwriter with an international fan base. Apart from a series of recordings and CD releases, Father Rob has also

written a number of songs for various campaigns and international conferences. In addition to the workshop on

Monday, 16th November, Father Rob will be speaking to the whole College community on Tuesday, 17

th

November. For more information on Father Rob go to www.frrobgalea.com

The music workshop will take place from 2.00p.m. to 4.00p.m. in the MacKillop College Junior Theatre. Students

are asked to be present at the beginning of period 5 with their instruments. This is a fantastic opportunity for

students to learn more about liturgical music and how we can better serve our Parish community musically. As

such, I encourage all members of the Praise Band to attend.

REHEARSAL ATTENDANCE

Due to the exceptionally busy nature of Term 4 it is essential that all students regularly attend rehearsals and arrive

on time. If a student is unable to attend a rehearsal they must let Mr Denham know by email or in person as soon as

possible.

TERM 4 EVENTS

Term 4 is always busy for schools with many end-of-year events and activities. Please take note of the events

outlined in the “Upcoming Events” section below to stay on top of household organisation during this busy period.

Of particular importance is the Co-curricular Music Showcase and Awards Night. This night was highly successful

last year and has become an annual event. This showcase concert aims to acknowledge the efforts of co-curricular

music students and showcase the outstanding talent that comes through our College. It is essential that all members

of the Co-curricular Music Program attend.

BEYOND BANDS

Last year local youth from around Port Macquarie

ran a community band night called “Beyond

Bands”, aimed at Years 7 -12 to raise money for

the mental health organisation, Beyond Blue.

It was a great success with 300 people attending

and raising $1300. This year they are running

Beyond Bands again, except this time they are

raising money to support the St Vincent de Paul

McCosker House, a homeless refuge. It is on 14th

November, which is Saturday Week 6 at the local

Port Macquarie Youth Hub on Horton Street. The

doors and café will open at 5.30p.m. with bands

kicking off at 6.00p.m. and finishing at 10.00p.m.

There will be café/cake stalls, Henna tattoo

station, fairy lights and lots of picnic rugs, pillows

to help enjoy Port’s local musicians. The tickets

are $5 and may be purchased on the night or via

Hannah Post at the Senior Site. The official line-

up is Strong Heart, Plebeian Groove, Manic Man

Child, The Shonas, Jack Rabbit and Abby &

Connah Wilson.

The 2015 Walkathon was held on Friday, 11th August and sponsorship pledges have been steadily coming in. Thank you to all those students who made the commitment to submit their sponsorship within the required time. This enabled them to be in the running for some great prizes. Students who have not yet brought in their sponsorship will be followed up by their Leader of Pastoral Care. Parents will be notified if money is not submitted by Monday, 9th November. Last week a very entertaining walkathon prize assembly was led by Mr Adam Kelly. Tension was high in anticipation of prizewinners being announced. In addition a spontaneous dance off saw a Year 9 and 10 PC being named winners in the BBQ and out of uniform prize. *PC groups who raised over $1000, receive a BBQ lunch on their own out of uniform day include: 7F1, 7I1, 7M1, 7M2, 7O1, 8I2 and 8M1. While PC 9I2 and 10I1 were winners of the dance off. A great effort – well done! *The highest PC fundraisers overall and winners of the Jetboat ride was Mr Daniel Murphy’s PC 7F1. Well done and congratulations! *The highest overall fundraisers from each Year group and winners of a $100 voucher at a store of their choice were: Year 7: Holly Jennings Year 8: Brayden Ardrey Year 9: Daniel Johnson Year 10: Kathryn Snell *The Major Raffle was won by Phoebe Hiatt. Hope you enjoy spending your $250 worth of vouchers! *Sarah Gainsford won a great Canon Digital Camera in the minor raffle and there were a further nine winners of some great prizes thanks to our sponsors. *Gemma Mooney and Kaitlyn Meyers were winners of a $50 voucher for dressing up on the day, together with a further inventive group of eight students who each received a Canteen voucher! Thank you once again to our sponsors, the students and staff for another successful fundraiser. The Walkathon Committee
