INTERVIEW

(continued on page 5)

SELTZER HAS HIGH HOPES FOR LUCREZIABy Meredith Daughertyt @BH_MDaugherty

For more than six decades, Edward Seltzer has channeled his love of the Thoroughbred industry

into a successful breeding and racing operation. With the recent success of his filly Lucrezia in the Suncoast Stakes—a prep for the Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1)—Seltzer shows no signs of slowing down. BloodHorse MarketWatch spoke to the veteran horseman about what’s next for his filly, what drives his team, and what helps keep his passion for the game alive.

MarketWatch: How long have you owned and operated your farm in Florida?

Edward Seltzer: We've had Solera Farm right outside of Williston, Fla., for about 15 years. We bought it in about 2005 or 2006, and it is something we always wanted to have. I have a daughter who is a vet and loves having the farm, so it's been really fun for me.

MW: Is there a reason you chose Florida as the base for your breeding and training operations?

ES: To be very honest, I've always believed—contrary to Kentucky feelings—that the best place to

raise a horse is Florida. I've seen it for years, and we have always brought our weanlings here in the fall and let them grow up here. I believe there is something to be said about sunshine, which changes when you get above a different parallel. There is a lot of vitamin D, and that helps horses with their bones and allows them to be out more and not have to run around on frozen ground. It's the weather, the sunlight, and the chance to be out and run and play. It's a great time for them. However, it's hard to breed here because the stallions aren't here. As mares get good, they have to go to Kentucky. I don't really like to ship pregnant mares that are in our breeding program, so we do foal everything in Kentucky and bring them here when they're weaned. We did that for years, and one day we just decided to bite the bullet and buy our own farm where we could bring them home.

BLOODHORSE DAILY PAGE 5 OF 31FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 2020

INTERVIEW

MW: How many mares are in your breeding program?

ES: About 20. Most are in Kentucky, but now we have six or seven here because a while back we had a horse called Field Commission, who ran in Canada, and he hurt himself. Long story short, we wanted to breed him, so we built a breeding shed so that we could help him here and stand him here. It's been OK, but having a stallion is a tough job if you're good at it, and we're really probably not. I always said I wouldn't start another stallion, but we had a colt that was a full brother to Lucrezia, who won the Suncoast last Saturday, and he looked to be all-world to me.

Rogueish ran at Fair Grounds (in 2018), and he ran a huge number. It was incredible. Steve Asmussen had him and told me he was his best 2-year-old by far. Long story short, he was ready to run in a stake, and he bowed. I was really despondent, and we felt that if we couldn't bring him back to what he was, I didn't want to cheapen him and run him in lower races. I didn't know what to do, but there is a lady here named Dani Dougherty at Oakton Farm, and she really wanted to stand him and she works hard. I gave her 80% of the horse, so she's standing him at Oakton, and she's doing a lovely job, so we keep a few mares to send to her as well. It will be wonderful to see her succeed.

MW: Your farm offers training, boarding, breeding, and rehabilitation. Do you have plans to expand further?

ES: We can't keep any more horses here. I want

to cut back; it's like being an addict. I have too many horses, but it's hard because we love what we have. We don't have a lot that we don't have feelings for, so we're trying to figure out a way to cut back and make sure they go to good places, and that isn't always easy. We don't have that much ground, and we have many that are pensioned that need looking after. It's like any animal—if you own them, it's your responsibility to make sure they are well taken care of the rest of their

lives.MW: Do you sell most of what

you breed in Kentucky?ES: What we normally do is sell

the horses as yearlings. We have always kept most of our fillies and sold the colts because they don't have the same residual value. We've never been in a position where we could afford to take a beating if the horse didn't turn out. But a few years ago we sold a bunch of our stock, and they did really well, so that helped set us up better. I'd love

to win at Keeneland. It's my favorite racetrack, I think, because it's so different from everywhere else. If you love horses, it's the best place to be because people there truly love horses. The people are great.

Now, I think maybe we will race a little more and not sell as many. I would like to cut back on some mares, but I'll have to figure that out when the time comes. We're very fortunate to have 20 to 25 people working here who are wonderful and who have worked for us for years. You can't really find a lot of people that want to work at this anymore. We have a really good team.

MW: What do you see for the future of the game?ES: It's a hard thing to say because I've been in this

so long and watched it change so much. I've seen it go in so many different directions. Now you have trainers that have 300 horses who are bigger than breeders in their operation. Now there are syndicates bringing people in.

I want to cut back; it’s like being an addict. I have too many horses,

but it’s hard because we love what we have.”

SELTZER HAS HIGH HOPES FOR LUCREZIA

… I don't know where it is going. I know that I don't want to get out of the game. I want to enjoy this game for as long as I can. You have to love it and just go with it. Sometimes you change trainers from time to time, but there isn't much else you can do. We've had some luck. We've never had a ton of money, but we've had a lot of fun.

MW: Do you train your own runners before they're sent to the track?

ES: Yes. We have a couple of people that train with us as partners or friends. It was never meant to be that way, but when we bought the farm, I met Curtis Garrison, who had been with the farm and had been training for other people, so we got to know him and now he's family. He'll be here the rest of his life. It's my wife, myself, my daughter, and Curtis, so it's a small operation. We have 300 acres, but that is small when you have the amount of horses we have. The answer would probably be to build another barn, but I don't really want to.

It's also wonderful to have my daughter work with me. I used to think she was wasting her time working for me, but she loves it. It's a wonderful thing because we all do something. I can't look at a horse—I've never been able to. I can do pedigrees, but she can really look at the physical and assess their mental state, and Curtis can too, so we really make a great team.

MW: How many do you personally race per year?ES: We probably race eight or 10 a year, maybe

more next year. I've always loved it. My world changed over a period of time. When you start out, you have no money and you're claiming horses. Then things change, but it's been a passion for over 60 years now.

MW: What did you think of Lucrezia's performance in the Suncoast Stakes and the possibility she could make it to the Kentucky Oaks?

INTERVIEW

(continued from page 6)

SELTZER HAS HIGH HOPES FOR LUCREZIA

ES: Saturday, we had two horses in two stakes, Chapalu and Lucrezia. Both were experiments for us. Lucrezia, I wanted to see if she would get two turns. The other was what I thought was a really good grass horse, who won at Keeneland and ran faster and better for the prep for the Breeders' Cup, but we decided not to go. We sent him up to Woodbine, and he won a grade 3. Arnaud Delacour, who trains for us, wanted to try him on the dirt this time, and he just doesn't run the same, but I think he's a very good grass horse. I wasn't nervous, though, watching him in the Sam Davis (G3) because we can always put him back on the grass.

Lucrezia, I didn't think she'd run that race the way she did. I was surprised. I don't know about the Kentucky Oaks because she surprised me, to tell you the truth. The jockey took her back, asked her again, and the ride was incredible. I have a feeling she might be better than we think. I haven't had many like her that can go two turns and, at the same time, be one of the best sprinters, I think, in the country. It's an interesting combination. This is the sixth generation of family for me with her, so it's great to see them succeed.

I played ball and pitched, and you can't do that and not be superstitious, and I'm superstitious to a fault. I know Arnaud is thinking of the Ashland Stakes (G1) for Lucrezia. It's hard to talk about because it's a long way off and things can happen. We had a filly called Wyomia that Curtis trained for us, and we won the Suncoast several years ago with her. Curtis and I took her to Keeneland together in the van. She ran well, but the jock dropped an iron and she finished second. I've always wanted to get Curtis back to the Ashland, but it's a different game, so we will see. I promised one day we'd win another for him, so I'd love to see that happen. BH

CALIFORNIA CHROME RECOVERING FROM ENTERITISBy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

Two-time Horse of the Year California Chrome is recovering from a bout of enteritis that has

delayed his start of the 2020 breeding season, according to tweets from JS Company in Japan, where the stallion stands.

"California Chrome has minor enteritis after arriving at Arrow Stud and (is) recovering now," JS Company reported. "We are treating (him) so that breeding can start in March. The date and time will be announced."

Enteritis is an inflammation of the small intestine that causes distention and swelling. The condition is one of several illnesses a horse can acquire from the stress of shipping. Gastrointestinal problems and respiratory problems are the top two health concerns associated with shipping, according to the 2015 study "Health Problems and Risk Factors Associated with Long Haul Transport of Horses in Australia" that was published by MDPI.

Because of his discomfort, the farm refrained from showing California Chrome during a recent stallion show. JS Company tweeted that it expects to be able to show the 9-year-old dual American classic winner next month. The farm has also posted a video of California

Chrome in his stall with the caption "He is eating a lot!"California Chrome was sold to JS Company in the

fall and relocated from Taylor Made Stallions, where he entered stud in 2017. The most accomplished horse from the A.P. Indy sire line, California Chrome bred 421 mares in his first three books at Taylor Made Stallions. His first crop of yearlings sold last year, topped by a $325,000 purchase. California Chrome also stood during the Southern Hemisphere breeding seasons in 2017 and 2018 in Chile at Sumaya Stud. BH

ZAYAT CRITICAL OF FIRM'S EFFORT TO REACQUIRE ASSETSBy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

Owner/breeder Ahmed Zayat sharply criticized recent efforts by New York-based investment firm

MGG to acquire horses and breeding rights the com-pany contends Zayat sold fraudulently, violating the terms of loan agreements his Zayat Stables had with MGG.

"We are disappointed but not surprised at MGG and Kevin Griffin's aggressive attack on the horse industry," Zayat said in a Feb. 13 statement distributed by attorney Andrew Brettler with the Lavely & Singer law firm in Los Angeles. "Zayat Stables said from the beginning that it wanted to liquidate certain assets to generate enough proceeds to pay off all of its creditors. Motivated purely by self-interest and greed, MGG, however, was more interested in litigating this dispute at the expense of other creditors. MGG has gone as far as filing baseless claims against reputable horse farms and bloodstock agents."

In an amended complaint filed Feb. 11 with the Fayette Circuit Court Division 9, MGG is arguing it is entitled to the ownership of nine breeding rights to American Pharoah and horses sold between September 2017 and December 2019 who had been included in the collateral for tens of millions of dollars in loans from MGG to Zayat Stables. The breeding rights were purportedly sold collectively for $3.3 million between December 2018 and June 2019, with two rights sold to LNJ Foxwoods and seven to Orpendale, an entity associated with Coolmore and Ashford Stud, where American Pharoah stands. The complaint also argued for the return of stallions El Kabeir, who was purportedly sold to Yeomanstown Stud in Ireland, and Solomini, who was sold to McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds. Other horses reported in court documents as sold by the Zayats include grade 1-placed mare American Cleopatra and race mares Lemoona and Amandrea.

"This conduct demonstrates MGG's fundamental lack of knowledge of the horse industry and complete lack of respect for the parties essential to its success," Zayat continued in his statement. "Zayat Stables is doing everything it can to ensure that all of its debts are repaid, but MGG has placed itself above all others and

has made it nearly impossible for other creditors to be treated fairly."

Zayat Stables is now under the supervision of court-appointed receiver Elizabeth Woodward, the director of forensic accounting and litigation support at the Lexington accounting firm Dean Dorton. MGG has requested in its complaint that the ownership of the horses and the nine breeding rights be transferred to MGG and that all proceeds an entity receives from the sale of progeny from the mares or the breeding rights be held in a trust for the benefit of MGG.

Woodward issued her own statement Feb. 12, saying that while she and her consultant Gatewood Bell were notified when MGG amended its complaint, she takes no position on any issues raised in the court filings.

"The Circuit Court's order appointing the receiver directs her to take possession of the collateral and maximize its value, which is the work she is doing. The receiver works for and reports to the Court, not MGG, or any other party," read Woodward's statement. BH

MONMOUTH CONTINUES INNOVATION WITH FIXED-ODDS WAGERINGBy Frank Angstt @BH_FAngst

Monmouth Park, which successfully pushed for sports wagering at the track, will now offer a

product in fixed-odds race wagering that figures to be attractive to new bettors.

Led by Dennis Drazin, the chairman and CEO of Monmouth operator Darby Development, the horsemen-owned track pushed to legalize sports wagering in the state in 2012. In 2018, New Jersey won a Supreme Court case overturning a federal law that blocked most states from allowing sports wagering, paving the way for New Jersey and other states.

Monmouth opened for sports wagering June 14, 2018. Now the track plans to offer fixed-odds wagering on racing, which figures to be attractive to sports bettors who are used to locking in odds. Traditionally, U.S. racing has offered pari-mutuel wagering, where odds fluctuate based on wagering pools.

Last week, BetMakers signed a 10-year exclusive agreement to manage fixed-odds wagering on Monmouth races. The agreement will allow bookmakers to offer fixed-odds wagering on racing events where the racing body or rights holder allows fixed odds betting to occur. BetMakers said it will pursue agreements from other U.S.-based tracks as well as international tracks that would like access to the New Jersey fixed-odds market.

BetMakers sees unlimited potential in the deal."We have been working with racing bodies and

bookmakers from all parts of the world to develop the best solution that fits into the horse racing ecosystem," BetMakers CEO Todd Buckingham said. "We believe that U.S. horse racing has the potential to be the largest betting sport in the U.S., including basketball, American football, and baseball. There is a real opportunity for the U.S. horse racing market to grow like it has in Australia, which has seen prize-

money levels double over the past seven to 10 years based on a funding model that is equitable to all participants."

Participating bookmakers will need to agree to terms under the New Jersey fixed-odds model, which pays a percentage of handle back to the track as "rights fees."

"Our focus at Monmouth Park is ensuring we get the best return for our product, and I believe this deal with the team at BetMakers, given their wagering, compliance, and technology capabilities, provides us with a solution that can deliver a successful venture," Drazin said.

Drazin noted the success Australian racing has had in offering fixed-odds wagering. He'll visit that country this year to better understand how fixed-odds wagering has impacted the racing business model there.

"We have been instrumental in the rollout of sports betting into the U.S., and now we will be the driver of fixed-odds horse racing in New Jersey and hopefully throughout the U.S.," Drazin said. "We selected BetMakers as our partner in delivering this concept due to their extensive knowledge and understanding of what is required to make this a success." BH

PARTIAL INTEREST SOLD IN LOUISIANA 3-YEAR-OLD NO PAROLEBy Byron Kingt @BH_Bking

Unbeaten Louisiana-bred 3-year-old No Parole will have an additional

owner when he races next, perhaps a prep race toward the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1). Majority owner Maggi Moss said Feb. 13 she has sold a mi-nority interest in the Violence colt to Greg Tramontin.

No Parole—3-for-3 in state-bred competition—won his first two races at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots in six-furlong sprints before stretching out to two turns in the Feb. 8 Louisiana Bred Premier Night Prince Stakes at a mile at Delta Downs. Spurting to the lead, he relaxed and cruised under the wire 6 1/2 lengths in front under regular rider James Graham.

In a television interview after the race, trainer Tom Amoss said he felt the colt warranted a chance in a Derby prep, but Moss said Wednesday she and Amoss would wait until next week before mapping out a definitive plan. She said the March 21 TwinSpires.com Louisiana Derby (G2) at Fair Grounds would be unlikely, owing to its 1 3/16-mile distance this year.

Also next month is the March 14 Rebel Stakes (G2) at 1 1/16 miles at Oaklawn Park, another track where Amoss races during the winter. Nadal, the speedy winner of the San Vicente Stakes (G2), is being pointed toward that race by trainer Bob Baffert.

Wherever the destination, Moss is excited to race No Parole with Tramontin, the CEO of GoAuto Insurance. Moss said Tramontin is eager to get more involved in horse ownership after stepping away

from the sport for a lengthy period. In recent years, Tramontin has owned a limited number of runners, some with New Orleans businessman Bobby Asaro.

Moss said agent Lauren Carlisle facilitated the partnership with Tramontin.

"I had a lot of really nice offers on him—I mean, really good, generous offers," Moss said. "But they wanted all of him or they were going to move away from Tom. That was just a problem for me. One wanted to go to California, another one someplace else."

A $75,000 yearling purchase by Moss at the 2018 Keeneland September Yearling Sale from Select Sales, agent for breeder Coteau Grove Farms, No Parole is out of the stakes-winning Bluegrass Cat mare Plus One. The dam has two winners, both by Violence, from three foals to race. BH

GOUVERNEUR MORRIS SET FOR 2020 DEBUT AT TAMPA BAY DOWNSBy Bob Ehaltt @BobEhalt

It looks as though Triple Crown hopeful Gouverneur Morris will be returning to the races a little sooner

than expected. It seemed the grade 1-placed Constitution colt was

on track to begin his 3-year-old campaign in the Feb. 17 Southwest Stakes (G3) at Oaklawn Park, but he will instead run for trainer Todd Pletcher Feb. 14 in a five-horse, $27,500 allowance optional claiming race at Tampa Bay Downs. The race also features Untitled and Letmeno, who also have stakes experience.

"We want to have a nice, non-killer race to get him started," said Team Valor International founder and CEO Barry Irwin, who owns Gouverneur Morris along with WinStar Farm.

Irwin said the plan is to run Gouverneur Morris in the mile-and-40-yard test Friday and then target a yet-to-be-determined race on the Road to the Kentucky Derby with a top prize of 100 points. How the colt performs in that start will determine whether he will have enough qualifying points and a valid reason to run in the May 2 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1).

"(WinStar Farm president/CEO and racing manager Elliott Walden), Todd, and I talked," Irwin said. "We've all won the Derby, and just getting a horse in the Derby is not our goal. It's not the be-all, end-all to us that it is to some people. We only want to run if we have a chance, and you need a fit, fresh horse to do that. If this works out right, he'll come up to the Derby the way we

want, and we'll feel good about going."He will have one normal, average race, and then

we'll go for the gold in a race like the Florida Derby (G1) or somewhere else, and if we run well, we'll go to the Derby."

Irwin said all options are on the table for Gouverneur Morris' final Kentucky Derby prep.

When Gulfstream Park was unable to card an allowance race for Gouverneur Morris and the others, Irwin said calls were made to Tampa Bay, and the race was included on Friday's card.

"He needs to run. He's getting too strong," Irwin said.Palm Beach Downs-based Gouverneur Morris, who

will be ridden by John Velazquez, began his career Sept. 2 with a nine-length maiden special weight win at Saratoga Race Course and finished second to Maxfield in the Oct. 5 Claiborne Breeders' Futurity (G1) at Keeneland in his final race at 2. He has four points on the Kentucky Derby leaderboard from the Breeders' Futurity, ranking him 22nd heading into the weekend.

Bred in Kentucky by Machmer Hall, Carrie Brogden, Craig Brogden, and James Miller out of the Unbridled's Song mare Addison Run, Gouverneur Morris was purchased last year by Team Valor for $600,000 from Eddie Woods' consignment to The Gulfstream Sale, Fasig-Tipton's Florida select 2-year-olds in training sale. Phoenix Thoroughbreds originally purchased him for $200,000 from Select Sales' consignment to the 2018 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

Gary Barber and Michael Sebastian's Untitled was entered in the race after finishing fourth in the seven-furlong Swale Stakes (G3) Feb. 1 at Gulfstream in his first start for trainer Mark Casse. In his only other start, the son of Khozan was an 11-length winner when he made his Dec. 14 debut at the same track for trainer Ralph Nicks.

Randall Bloch and Six Column Stables' Letmeno, a son of Twirling Candy, will be making his 3-year-old debut for trainer Ian Wilkes after finishing fourth in the Sept. 14 Iroquois Stakes (G3) and second in the TwinSpires Ellis Park Juvenile Stakes in his final starts at 2.

Pletcher also entered Siena Farm's Dudley Square, who won his debut Jan. 18 at Tampa Bay.

Town and Country Racing's Sounion, who was third in a Jan. 11 allowance optional claimer for trainer Brian Lynch at Gulfstream, rounds out the field. BH

PLETCHER INVADES OAKLAWN WITH A PAIR OF 3-YEAR-OLDSBy BloodHorse Staff

Todd Pletcher has 26 early Triple Crown nominees this year, and two are scheduled to make their

season debuts this weekend at Oaklawn Park, where the future Hall of Fame trainer has enjoyed immense success since starting his first horse in Hot Springs, Ark., more than 20 years ago.

Alpha Sixty Six and Chase Tracker were flown to Arkansas Feb. 11 from their South Florida base. Alpha Sixty Six will run in a first-level allowance race Feb. 15, and Chase Tracker is ticketed for the Feb. 17 Southwest Stakes (G3). Both races are 1 1/16 miles.

Chase Tracker and Alpha Sixty Six haven't started since finishing third and sixth, respectively, in the Dec. 7 Remsen Stakes (G2) at Aqueduct Racetrack. Pletcher said Chase Tracker received the green light for the Southwest following a five-furlong workout Feb. 9 in 1:01.19 at Palm Beach Downs. The son of multiple grade 1 winner and millionaire Verrazano, who began his racing career with Pletcher, won his Sept. 21 debut at Parx Racing before finishing third in the Nov. 3 Nashua Stakes (G3) at Aqueduct and the Remsen, beaten 4 1/4 lengths in the 1 1/8-mile race.

"He was good enough to break his maiden first time out. Ran a respectable race in the Nashua and a good, solid third in the Remsen," Pletcher said Tuesday. "He has been training steadily. We didn't really have a firm plan in mind but thought he worked very well here this past weekend, so we decided the timing for the Southwest was good."

Pletcher said Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez will ride Chase Tracker for the first time in the Southwest, Oaklawn's second of four Road to the Kentucky Derby races. The series continues with the March 14 Rebel Stakes (G2) and the April 11 Arkansas Derby (G1). Post positions will be drawn Feb. 14 for the Southwest, which offers points on a 10-4-2-1 scale to the top four finishers toward starting eligibility for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1).

Alpha Sixty Six, from the first crop of Liam's Map, won his Sept. 7 debut at Belmont Park before finishing fifth behind winner Tiz the Law in the Oct. 5 Champagne Stakes (G1) at Belmont. Alpha Sixty Six, who has been ridden by Velazquez in all three starts, was beaten 17 1/2 lengths in the Remsen as the betting favorite. Ramon Vazquez rides him Saturday.

"Just trying to get back on track with him," Pletcher said. "His last race was a bit of a disappointment. He's been training steadily. Just looking for an opportunity to get a start into him, and if he were to run well, it could hopefully put him in position to possibly come back for the Rebel or something like that. We'll see if he can step forward for us."

Pletcher and Velazquez teamed to win the 2017 Southwest with One Liner. Pletcher has won the Arkansas Derby a record five times (Graeme Hall in 2000, Balto Star in 2001, Overanalyze in 2013, Danza in 2014, and Magnum Moon in 2018) and the Rebel twice (Malagacy in 2017 and Magnum Moon in 2018).

Pletcher, who ran his first horse at Oaklawn in 1999, has won 28% of his starts at the track (24 of 85) and 21 stakes, according to Oaklawn publicity.

"Oaklawn's been great to us over the years," said Pletcher, who has a record seven Eclipse Awards as the country's outstanding trainer. "I have fond memories as a teenager going there when my dad was racing there, so it's always been a cool place. They've really got a great product going on there at the moment. There are some very lucrative races, including a great series of 3-year-old preps, so we're excited to have somebody back there and hopefully can continue some of the success we've had."

Pletcher's father, retired trainer J.J. Pletcher, was an Oaklawn regular from 1979-86 and won the 1980 Oaklawn Handicap (G2) with Uncool.

Taraz and Intrepid Heart Gear Up for Their Next Starts

Unbeaten Taraz returned to the work tab Tuesday morning, covering a half-mile in :47 4/5 on a good track for trainer Brad Cox and breeder/owner Juddmonte Farms. Taraz has been based at Oaklawn since Jan. 28 and won the Feb. 1 Martha Washington Stakes for 3-year-old fillies in her 2020 and two-turn debut. She is pointing for the March 7 Honeybee Stakes (G3) at 1 1/16 miles.

Dazzling 2019 Oaklawn debut winner Intrepid Heart is "probably a month away from being ready to go," Pletcher said Tuesday.

Intrepid Heart broke his maiden by 7 3/4 lengths at a mile last February before finishing eighth in the Belmont Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets (G1) and fifth in his most recent start, the July 26 Curlin Stakes at Saratoga Race Course. The son of Tapit has seven published works at Palm Beach Downs in South Florida since Dec. 20.

"Don't really have a race picked out for him yet, but he's come back in good order," Pletcher said. BH

SHOTSKI UNDER CONSIDERATION FOR THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTHBy BloodHorse Staff

Gary Barber, Wachtel Stable, Pantofel Stable, and Howling Pigeon Farms' grade 2-winning 3-year-

old Shotski, who was second in his sophomore debut this month, might take his next steps on the Triple Crown trail in South Florida.

Trainer Jerry O'Dwyer, based at Laurel Park in Maryland, said the colt's connections are considering the Feb. 29 Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream Park for his next race. The 1 1/16-mile test carries Road to the Kentucky Derby points on a 50-20-10-4 scale to the top four finishers. Dennis' Moment, one of the early favorites for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1), is also being targeted for that race.

"For now, we're still on the trail, trying to get points and see where we go," O'Dwyer said. "I'll have to discuss it with the owners, but (for) the next step, we

might go down for the Fountain of Youth. He's bright-eyed here in his stall. I gave him two days off after the (last) race and brought him back to the track. He's been a handful just walking around the shedrow, just feeling good."

A bay son of Blame out of the Bluegrass Cat mare She Cat, Shotski was a frontrunning, half-length winner of the 1 1/8-mile Remsen Stakes (G2) in his Dec. 7 juvenile finale. He returned to Aqueduct Racetrack to launch his 3-year-old campaign in the Feb. 1 Withers Stakes (G3), also 1 1/8 miles, where he led from the gate until deep stretch before yielding late and finishing second, 3 1/4 lengths behind Max Player.

"I was very happy. Obviously in the moment, you're disappointed you didn't win, but looking back at it, I wasn't disappointed in him at all," O'Dwyer said. "He went out there on the front end and hadn't run in like seven weeks, and they pressured him the whole way. He never really got a breather or an easy time like the last time when he won the Remsen.

"I thought we were going to be able to sit in behind this time, which I would have liked to have seen, but when he got out there, he was off a little bit tardy and (jockey) Luis (Saez) just wanted to push him forward into a prominent position," he added. "He kind of just locked on for a few strides going into that first bend. Luis said he opted to just let him go on up there instead of trying to choke him down and take him back. Every time a horse came to him, he fought on and put every one of them away. I'm very proud of him. We have not lost any faith in the horse at all."

O'Dwyer said the race layout is a factor in determining Shotski's next start. New York's next points race for 3-year-olds is the one-mile Gotham Stakes (G3) March 7.

"We have him going two turns now. The Fountain of Youth is two turns, so that's kind of swaying us to go down and keep him going two turns instead of dropping back to a one-turn mile in the Gotham," O'Dwyer said. "I do think I'd like to get him off the Aqueduct surface right now because it's very testing and tiring, and I don't want to bottom him. It's going to be a long year ahead."

The Fountain of Youth is Gulfstream's final prep for the March 28 Xpressbet.com Florida Derby (G1), contested at 1 1/8 miles. BH

FIRENZE FIRE SET FOR SEASON DEBUT IN GENERAL GEORGEBy BloodHorse Staff

Mr. Amore Stable's grade 1-winning millionaire homebred Firenze Fire is set to make both his

season and Maryland debuts Feb. 15 in the $250,000 General George Stakes (G3) at Laurel Park over seven furlongs.

A son of Poseidon's Warrior, Florida-bred Firenze Fire has won nine of 23 starts with eight stakes wins. Trained by Jason Servis, the bay was last seen racing at Aqueduct Racetrack when he landed the Dec. 22 Gravesend Stakes over six furlongs. Before that, he took the Fabulous Strike Stakes at Penn National, one start after finishing fifth in the Nov. 2 Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) at Santa Anita Park.

"He's a tough horse—seasoned," Servis said. "He's a homebred, and I think you've definitely got to single him out from the rest of the crowd. I remember the first time I ran him, we didn't expect him to win, and he won. Then we went to Saratoga, and I wasn't expecting him to win, and he won again. I said, 'Oh, what do we have here?'"

Firenze Fire has raced exclusively in stakes company since his debut score at Monmouth Park in June 2017, winning the Sanford Stakes (G3)

in his second start. His best score came two starts later when he took the Champagne Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park. That victory sent him on the Triple Crown trail the same season as champion Justify, who dominated the sophomore division to become the first undefeated Triple Crown winner.

Firenze Fire posted graded wins in the Dwyer Stakes (G3) and Gallant Bob Stakes (G3). Though he is proven at six furlongs, he is winless with one second and one third in three tries going seven-eighths of a mile.

"I don't think the seven furlongs is a big deal. He won the Dwyer, which is a mile, with a big speed figure, so I don't think the distance will be an issue," Servis said. "He's run and won at a lot of different racetracks, so we're going to give it a whirl."

Two-time Eclipse Award winner Irad Ortiz Jr. has the mount on Firenze Fire from post 6, and the pair will carry the high weight at 122 pounds. Since winning the Gravesend, the experienced sprinter has logged three timed works at Belmont Park.

"He didn't really have any break," Servis said. "He ran a couple times close together and we were leaning on him pretty good, so we just wanted to space his next race out."

Gary Barber, Wachtel Stable, and Terp Racing's grade 2 winner Still Having Fun will make his third start off a layoff in the General George. According to the 5-year-old Old Fashioned gelding's connections, the General George has been the intended target for him since he returned to his barn last fall off a five-month break.

"This has always been kind of our short-term goal with him. I know it's going to be a tough field, but the reality is every race we run him in is tough. We want to see how he can compete against these guys," trainer Timothy Keefe said. "We do have the benefit this time of walking out of our stall and being here at our home track, which certainly is going to benefit us, I believe. Hopefully, we get a good trip."

Still Having Fun placed second against fellow Maryland-breds Dec. 7 in the six-furlong Howard and Sondra Bender Memorial Stakes, beaten a neck in his first race in seven months. Last out, he set the pace for a half-mile before tiring to fifth behind grade 1 winner Mind Control in the seven-furlong Toboggan Stakes (G3) Jan. 18 at Aqueduct.

"The way the race set up wasn't really the way we hoped it would up in New York, but he came out of the race super," Keefe said. "Nobody else really wanted (the lead). This horse will do whatever you ask him to do. I was a little bit surprised he was up there, but not completely. We're pleased. I think he's coming into it well."

Last year, Still Having Fun was seventh as the favorite in the General George.

"He only got beat a few lengths. He'd had a hard campaign with no time off and had been all over the place. We were kind of at the point when I ran him last year where he was a well-run, well-traveled horse," Keefe said. "He had done a lot up to that point. The difference now is this is just his third race back off a long layoff, which I think is a big positive."

Feargal Lynch rides from post 4.Lady Sheila Stable and Iris Smith Stable's Tiz He

the One has posted five wins and two thirds from nine starts at Laurel, earning his lone stakes win in the seven-furlong Challedon Stakes Sept. 28 in his season finale. Trained by Linda Rice, he returned to finish third, beaten a length, in his 6-year-old debut behind Honor the Fleet in the Jan. 18 Fire Plug Stakes.

Tiz He the One's stablemate Wicked Trick is also entered. The 5-year-old gelding is riding a six-race win streak, the last four since being claimed by Rice for $16,000 last summer at Saratoga Race Course. Tiz He the One and Wicked Trick will break from outside posts 8 and 9, respectively.

Completing the field are Honor the Fleet, Factor It In, Lone Rock, Threes Over Deuces, and Wonderful Light, the latter seeking his first stakes win.

The General George along with the Runhappy Barbara Fritchie Stakes (G3) for fillies and mares will co-headline a nine-race Winter Carnival program that features five stakes worth $800,000 in purses. BH

DEEP FIELDS IN TURFWAY'S BATTAGLIA, CINCINNATI TROPHYBy Byron Kingt @BH_Bking

Anchored by a couple of black-type contests—the $100,000 John Battaglia Memorial Stakes and

$75,000 Cincinnati Trophy Stakes—the Feb. 14 evening card at Turfway Park in Florence, Ky., serves as a reminder that the track's Jeff Ruby Steaks (G3) and supporting races are just around the corner.

The 1 1/16-mile Battaglia serves as a prep for the 1 1/8-mile Jeff Ruby, and the 6 1/2-furlong Cincinnati Trophy acts as a steppingstone to the one-mile Bourbonette Stakes. The Ruby and Bourbonette—both run March 14—are minor qualifiers on the Road to the Kentucky Derby and Road to the Kentucky Oaks, respectively.

No points are up for grabs Friday at Turfway, though that did not seem to affect entries. Both races drew fields of 12, though some horses are cross-entered elsewhere and could be scratched.

Trainer Mike Maker, who won the Battaglia last year with Somelikeithotbrown before that colt added the Jeff Ruby, has a pair of entries in the Battaglia, as do trainers Wesley Ward, James Chapman, and Jack Sisterson.

Maker is represented by Artemus Eagle (5-1 morning-line odds, Rafael Hernandez aboard) and Tomo Todo (5-1, Gerardo Corrales); Ward starts Hail to the Chief (8-1, Joe Bravo) and Invader (9-2, Albin Jimenez); Chapman has Drew (30-1, Arnaldo Bocachica) and Ryan's Cat (15-1, John McKee); and Sisterson has entered Truculent (6-1, Declan Carroll) and Declared (12-1, Declan Cannon).

Maker's duo bring imposing form into the Battaglia. Artemus Eagle, a 3-year-old son of Wicked Strong, comes off a local allowance optional claiming victory in a two-turn mile contest Dec. 31, and Toma Todo, an English Channel 3-year-old colt, enters the race after a second in the Jan. 26 Texas Turf Mile Stakes at Sam Houston Race Park in his first start around two

turns. He won a five-furlong turf race in his May 24 debut at Churchill Downs and ran third in a Dec. 19 return at Turfway against allowance-level rivals at six furlongs.

Bloom Racing Stable owns Toma Todo, and Artemus Eagle is owned by Ken and Sarah Ramsey. The Ramseys also have Hail to the Chief.

The morning-line favorite at 7-2 is Silverton Hill's High Holy, a winner of two consecutive sprints this winter at Turfway for trainer Darrin Miller. The second choice at 4-1 is Shake Some Action, a maiden winner at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots on grass Jan. 18 for trainer Brad Cox and owner Rupp Racing. Alan Garcia is on High Holy, and Corey Lanerie is aboard Shake Some Action.

Truculent, Shake Some Action, and Declared were also entered in races Feb. 15 at Fair Grounds.

In the Cincinnati Trophy, the morning-line choices are multiple winners Anna's Fast (3-1 odds), Rising Seas (7-2), and Karak (7-2). Anna's Fast and Karak ventured overseas to Ascot last year for Ward, going unplaced in stakes races. Rising Seas has remained in Kentucky, winning back-to-back races at Churchill Downs in November after a debut fourth at Keeneland. BH

SYNCHRONY SEEKS HAT TRICK IN FAIR GROUNDS STAKESBy Meredith Daughertyt @BH_MDaugherty

Pin Oak Stud homebred Synchro-ny could become only the second

horse to win three consecutive run-nings of the $150,000 Fair Grounds Stakes (G3T) Feb. 15 at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots.

Trained by Michael Stidham, the 7-year-old son of Tapit kicked off last season by winning the 1 1/8-mile turf test by 1 1/4 lengths. This year present a bigger challenge for the talented grass runner, who has not raced since October when he finished off the board in the City of Hope Mile Stakes (G2T) at Santa Anita Park.

"At the end of last year, there was a question as to whether or not we were going to bring him back for his 7-year old year," Stidham said. "Because of his health and desire for racing, we decided to give him a little break and then bring him back to Fair Grounds, which is his favorite track.

"His level of enthusiasm is the same as when we first got him years ago. Getting him over a million dollars in earnings is a goal, but we are also still chasing that elusive grade 1, and we think he's still capable of getting that done."

Synchrony has worked steadily at Fair Grounds in preparation for his season debut and enters the race with six timed works under his belt. He last breezed four furlongs Feb. 8 in :48 3/5.

"In his last work, Synchrony broke off and was just doing his thing nice and easy, when a gray horse came up beside him," Stidham said. "That horse happened to be (grade 3 Mineshaft Stakes favorite) Silver Dust. He ran by us on the turn, but then Synchrony showed his grit, came back at him, and almost got him at the wire. They galloped out together. You would never plan something like that with those two horses, but it was just really cool to see."

Jockey Joe Bravo, who was aboard for Synchrony's two victories in this race, will have the call once more from post 2.

Mystery Giver is the only horse to win three consecutive runnings of the Fair Grounds Stakes. Trained by Richard Scherer, the Illinois-bred took the race from 2002-04 before it was awarded graded status.

Switching to grass in the hope to improve his chances at reaching the Fair Grounds winner's circle is L and N Racing's Tone Broke. One of the youngest competitors in the 14-horse field, the Broken Vow colt finished off the board in the Jan. 18 Louisiana Stakes (G3) on the Fair Grounds dirt for trainer Steve Asmussen.

Tone Broke will depart from post 8 with Ricardo Santana Jr.

Fast Boat Seeks First Stakes Win in Colonel Power

Brad Grady's Fast Boat will look for his first stakes win in the $100,000 Colonel Power Stakes on the turf, having just missed last out in the Jan. 26 Frontier Utilities Turf Sprint Stakes at Sam Houston Race Park.

Trained by Joe Sharp, the gelded son of City Zip has not raced at Fair Grounds since March when he took an allowance race over the 5 1/2-furlong Colonel Power distance.

"We feel pretty confident for Saturday," Sharp said. "Most times you don't like breaking from post 1, but he's a horse that likes being down inside of horses. We were really pleased with his race last time out, and I think going 5 1/2 furlongs suits him much better."

Chaos Theory will look to repeat in the sprint. Owned by Marc Detampel, Sunshine State Racing, and Bottle Rocket Stable, Chaos Theory will enter off a nine-month layoff that trainer Brendan Walsh hopes will give the Curlin gelding a leg up.

"We gave him some time off," Walsh said. "He had some issues. Nothing major, but he needed some time. We brought him to Palm Meadows and have been working him over the turf there. He won this race last year, and we're expecting a good run from him. He looks as good as he ever was."

Chaos Theory will depart post 2 under Joel Rosario.Mitchell Road Looks to Repeat in Albert Stall

MemorialMrs. J.V. Shields and E.J.M. McFadden Jr.’s Mitchell

Road will look to retain her crown in the $100,000 Albert M. Stall Memorial Stakes over 1 1/16 miles on the grass.

Following her score in the Albert Stall Memorial last year, the 5-year-old daughter of English Channel trained by Hall of Fame conditioner Bill Mott earned her first graded stakes victory, wiring the field in the Gallorette Stakes (G3T) at Pimlico Race Course.

Out of the War Chant mare Quake Lake, Mitchell Road is a half sister to Country House, who was awarded the 2019 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) following the disqualification of Maximum Security. She enters off a runner-up finish in the Jan. 25 South Beach Stakes at Gulfstream Park.

"In her last race, she didn't break as cleanly as she usually does," said Riley

Mott, his father's assistant. "If we're lucky enough to break well Saturday, we expect her to be right up near the front like she usually is and to put in the effort she shows every time she runs. She's got a win over the Fair Grounds turf course as well, so we're coming into the race really confident in her."

Mitchell Road will partner with Rosario from post 2.Mitchell Road's likely competition will come from

Heider Family Stables' Zofelle, who shipped to the United States in October after beginning her career in Great Britain. Unbeaten in three starts for Walsh, the Zoffany filly earned her first stateside stakes win last out when she stormed home from the back of the pack to win the Pago Hop Stakes at Fair Grounds.

"She has done nothing wrong since she's gotten here to the states," Walsh said. "She's worked very well since her last race. It's nice to give her a chance to slowly work her way up the class ladder. Obviously, this will be the toughest test for her since she's been here. She's got to step up and do it again, but we have complete confidence in her. Hopefully with a good run Saturday, we can work our way into graded stakes competition."

Zofelle will break from post 12 with Florent Geroux. BH

LONG RANGE TODDY JOINS STEWART STABLEBy BloodHorse Staff

A year ago, Long Range Toddy was among the most prominent 3-year-olds on the grounds

at Oaklawn Park after winning the Remington Springboard Mile Stakes at 2 and finishing second in the Smarty Jones Stakes, Oaklawn's first of four races on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.

The 4-year-old son of Take Charge Indy is back at Oaklawn with a new trainer and on the comeback trail after his first workout of the season Feb. 9. Long Range Toddy went three furlongs in :38 2/5 for breeder/owner Willis Horton Racing and Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots-based trainer Dallas Stewart, who was in town at Hot Springs, Ark., last week to check on his Oaklawn division.

Long Range Toddy, previously with Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen, hasn't started since finishing seventh in the Sept. 29 Oklahoma Derby (G3) at Remington Park. There's no target date for his comeback race.

"I've got to do my job and see what happens," Stewart said. "Take our time with him, and we'll see."

Long Range Toddy's biggest victory came last year in the first division of the Rebel Stakes (G2) at

Oaklawn. He also ran sixth in the Arkansas Derby (G1) at Oaklawn and was placed 16th in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1).

Stewart said he reunited with Horton about a month ago. They teamed to win the 2006 Kentucky Oaks (G1) as partners with Lemons Forever. Their first starter at the 2020 Oaklawn meeting, Awe Emma, was also previously trained by Asmussen and ran fifth in her Feb. 7 allowance-level comeback race. BH

DOYLE, OTHER TRAILBLAZERS IN SAUDI JOCKEY COMPETITIONBy Byron Kingt @BH_Bking

Leading female jockey Sophie Doyle will join Hall of Fame rider Mike Smith in the Feb. 28 Kingdom

Day STC International Jockeys Challenge at King Ab-dulaziz Racecourse in Riyadh, a day before some of the world's best horses compete in the $20 million Saudi Cup.

The challenge will feature seven male and seven female riders from across the world. The lineup also includes Japanese riders Yutaka Take and Nanako Fujita; Italian superstar Frankie Dettori; French jockey Mickaëlle Michel; three-time New Zealand champion Lisa Allpress; 11-time British Classic-winning rider Ryan Moore; four-time Breeders' Cup-winning Frenchman Olivier Peslier; reigning British all-weather champion apprentice Nicola Currie; Swiss-born, German-based pattern-winning rider Sibylle Vogt; Canadian Emma-Jayne Wilson; and two top Saudi Arabian-based jockeys, Adel Alfouraidi and a second local rider who will be determined following the results of this weekend's racing.

Saudi Arabia has been slow to grant rights to its female citizens partially due to strict interpretation and application of Sharia law. Only in June 2018 were Saudi women granted the opportunity to receive driver's licenses, and last year Saudi Arabia ultimately lifted a ban requiring Saudi women to travel with a male guardian.

"It's phenomenal to have female riders riding in Saudi," Doyle said in a telephone interview Feb. 13. "I think it's great, not just for us but obviously for their local women, who are really trying to help the change with their culture with women and how they're perceived in their country. It's great to be able to showcase female riders in a sport against men. So I think it's very helpful towards what they're trying to achieve in their country as well."

The International Jockeys Challenge is the first of its kind in Saudi Arabia and the main attraction of Kingdom Day. Each leg of the competition—held over four races of an eight-race card—carries a prize of $400,000, and the overall winning jockey stands to land a $30,000 award.

"We are delighted to welcome some of the best jockeys in the business to compete at the first STC International Jockeys Challenge," said Prince Bandar Bin Khalid Al Faisal, the chairman of the Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia. "Racing is a sport that routinely sees male and female riders compete on a level playing field, and we are proud to continue this great tradition."

Riders will be assigned horses, prepared locally by Saudi-based trainers, via a draw process Feb. 25 and will accrue points on a 15-10-7-5-3 scale for top-five finishes. The winner is the rider with the most points after the competition's four races.

The International Jockeys Challenge reflects the values of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030, which lays out a program of targets for diversification and increased sporting participation among Saudi's young people, a release from the Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia stated.

Doyle said she will be away from America for about a week after riding at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots on Mardi Gras Feb. 25. She said she might ride at Meydan in Dubai Feb. 27 and plans to vacation overseas with her brother James, a successful British jockey, after the jockey competition.

Sophie Doyle, 33, from Cambridge, England, began riding full time in the United States in 2014-15. She was among the top 10 riders at Arlington International Racecourse in Chicago in 2018 and 2019 and tied for 16th at Fair Grounds during the 2018-19 season. Through Feb. 12, she was 17th in the Fair Grounds standings with 9 winners from 90 mounts.

The regular rider of Street Band, Doyle won her first grade 1 last year aboard the filly in the Cotillion Stakes (G1) at Parx Racing for trainer Larry Jones. In 2019, her mounts made more than $2.5 million, her season high in the U.S.

On Wednesday, Doyle said she has some experience riding in the Middle East, going there for a period after beginning her career in Europe. She won a Thoroughbred race at the Nad Al Sheba Racecourse, the previous site of the Dubai World Cup before the construction of Meydan. She said she also won two-thirds of a Triple Crown series for Arabian horses. BH

PRESENTED BY RACING POST

GODOLPHIN'S MAGIC LILY LANDS BALANCHINE AT MEYDANBy Jason Ford/Racing Post

The Balanchine Sponsored By Gulf News (G2) was the highlight at Meydan's seventh meet-

ing of the Dubai World Cup Carnival Feb 13, and favorite Magic Lily landed the spoils for Godolphin and trainer Charlie Appleby under William Buick, completing a double on the card for connections.

Magic Lily won the Cape Verdi Sponsored By Creek Views (G2) at Meydan last time out and became the ninth horse in 10 years to win both races, emulating former stable companion Poetic Charm, who managed the feat in 2019.

Settled just behind the leaders, Magic Lily was asked to close entering the long home straight before quickening past the Simon Crisford-ridden Maamora. Appleby's 5-year-old stayed on strongly to defeat Cape Verdi runner-up Nisreen by 1 1/4 lengths.

Third to Laurens in the Bet365 Fillies' Mile (G1) as a juvenile, Magic Lily missed the entire 2018 season and ran just twice in 2019. She has won both of her Meydan outings this year in the style of a mare who could yet win at the top level. She is certainly bred to do so, being by Vodafone Epsom Derby (G1) winner New Approach and out of Investec Epsom Oaks (G1) heroine Dancing Rain.

"We have always thought a lot of this horse, but she has had her issues," Buick said. "We knew the extra furlong here would suit her and that she had improved for the run in the Cape Verdi. I would imagine the group 1 Jebel Hatta over this course and distance on Super Saturday would be an option, but we will sit down and plan ahead."

The main dirt race was the one-mile Firebreak Stakes Sponsored By Gulfnews.com (G3) in which Capezzano dominated from the front under Mickael Barzalona, winning by seven lengths for Salem bin Ghadayer and Sultan Ali.

The Meydan Trophy Sponsored By Getthat, a turf conditions race for 3-year-olds, went to Godolphin courtesy of Ya Hayati, a Dubawi homebred making his third start. Settled just behind the leaders by Buick, he eased into contention on the home turn before quickening to the front two furlongs out, running on to defeat Timo Nurmos by a length.

"He has not always been the easiest, as he showed at the stalls at Wolverhampton, but he is hopefully a progressive horse," said Appleby, Ya Hayati's trainer. "We will switch him to the dirt now and look at the Al Bastakiya."

The six-furlong dirt handicap was turned into a procession by the Satish Seemar-trained Bochart, who was fastest out of the stalls under Richard Mullen, and the pair were never headed.

Jim Crowley landed the five-furlong turf handicap aboard the Doug Watson-trained Waady, who was a Sandown specialist in his younger days, recording four wins at the course, including the Coral Charge Sprint (G3). It was Waady's first turf success since September 2017 when he was trained by John Gosden.
